  • Hello and welcome to the first issue of the SW Life +STYLE online magazine.

Since moving to Yallingup in 2004, it has been my dream and intention to create a platform to showcase all the amazingly talented people living in Australia's south-west, my home. An online magazine is interactive and you have the information you need right at your fingertips. Instead of a page-turn format used by some other e-zines, I have chosen to make the magazine user-friendly, easier to read and more visual. I've also included links to most of the designers and products you see, so please explore. Of course every magazine needs a COVER! Each issue will feature a stunning south-west model, product or place...there is so much to choose from. This beautiful area is very exciting and is bursting with inspiring, creative people. I've been lucky to work with and for some of these people and this "e-zine" was created to share these talents with you. Designers, boutiques, models, makeup artists, stylists, retreats, yogis, event planners, fashion events, homewares, musicians and more...will be featured in this and future editions. A large part of my photography work is in the fashion industry and I've been fortunate to have some fabulous designers to shoot close to home. Our SPOTLIGHT in Issue 1 is on Dunsborough label Surf and Chocolate, a label making waves! Click on SPOTLIGHT in our menu (above) to read creator Anne Joon's story. Other features in this issue include designers Sea Dreamer and Sally Young Design - see their latest ranges in our SPOTLIGHT section. We also interview Sally, Definitive Faces owner Ann-Marie Wilsonn, model Teagan Cox, Bb Velvet Design owner Sally McGregor and Angela Tedling from Dunsborough boutique, Lagoon Swim. As well as direct links to websites in our DIRECTORY, please visit SHOP SEE DO for quality local businesses and services. South west events for the fashion-lover have increased over the last few years. The South-West Fashion Festival is in its fourth year and showcases local designers, creatives and emerging models. This year the festival will be held on February 21 and 22. The South West Fashion Day is also a "must-do" event for any fashionista and has become a

  • popular annual "girls day out". Local boutiques showcase their current ranges and part proceeds go to a chosen charity. Long gone are the days when we would have to drive 3 hours to buy decent clothes. Dunsborough, Margaret River, Bunbury, Busselton and surrounding areas all have boutiques bursting with gorgeous labels and products from high-end through to budget. In fact I've found many a treasure in local op-shops! A new addition to the creative calendar is The Pop-Up Collaborative. This initiative provides a temporary retail space for designers, artists and creatives to launch their product into a wider and sometimes otherwise inaccessible market. There have been three Pop-Ups so far, the next is March 14, 15 and 16 at the Yallingup Maze. Jazz also came to town last year with the very successful and well-received, Jazz by the Bay. International singer Marilyn Keller wowed the audience in the beautiful surroundings of Fermoy Estate. Other local and Western Australian singers and musicians played at various venues around the area. Another Jazz by the Bay is planned for June. The magazine will grow and evolve as I discover, meet and photograph more south west creatives, models and yogis and explore cafes, retreats and boutiques. You may see SW Life +STYLE on your local newstand in the future... but for now please scroll, click, share, shop and enjoy what this beautiful area has to offer. We chat to Bb Velvet Design designer and owner, Sally McGregor.

Bb Velvet Design... what does it stand for? Bb velvet stands for bold and bohemian. I have always been drawn to brightvibrant color. Despite the fact neutral tones keep coming back in to fashion, Idont feel at home without color surrounding me.

Bohemian....well for those who know me.... I am a traveller at heart and fell inlove with textiles on my first solo trip overseas, I was 17. I visited Thailand, India, and Indonesia and found myself drawn to the traditional tribal textiles. Thedifferent designs, fabrics used, the various people and their different weavingmethods I found it all fascinating. Traditionally made fabrics also tell you alotabout a countries culture and I love that! I collect fabrics everywhere I go. I haveamazing pieces from Uzbekistan, Egypt, Rajasthan, Tunisia, Japan,Vietnam,Mexico, Guatemala ......so many places. I see textiles as art and display them allover my house.

    BOHEMIAN chic

Where are your beautiful fabrics sourced and made? The fabrics are sourced in the mountains of Guatemala. They are woven in aplace named Panjachel by traditional weaving families and then a four hourdrive transports them to Zacualpa village where they are embroidered.Buying these textiles supports villagers and enables them to sustain theirtraditional weaving culture. The fabric initially is treadle loomed, that means using your feet and that isthe back drop fabric. After that an embroiderer pencils his design onto thewoven fabric and sews it on. No two pieces are the same and the processcan take up to three weeks for one piece to complete. Finished they are awork of art. I select each fabric personally, and thanks to technology I can now do thaton line. My man Carlos drives around the villages collecting various piecesand then sends the images to me. I choose what I like then import thefabrics to WA. This is just the beginning of a long process! I make ottomans and cushions with these beautiful fabrics. I mix them withchenille velvet, pompoms and tassels. My upholsterer is Peter Lawson fromLawson's Upholstery in Margaret River. Due to his 20 years ofexperience in the field, he is able to make the loomed fabric sit perfectly in acircle on the wood frame. Believe me this is difficult. Every fabric is slightlydifferent in tension, width and length and sometimes you are sewing threepieces of fabric upside down and all the seams need to perfectly line up!Due to this level of expertise and quality I choose to have them made here inAustralia. Come on Aussie come on...........

Can Bb be purchased on line and do you sellinstore? I have a Facebook page Bb Velvet Design (link buttonbelow) and you can contact me directly. I also I havepieces at Yallingup Art Gallery. I am also working onmy website as we speak.

Each issue we chat to local designers, boutique owners, creatives, models...If you would like to be included in a future issue, please get in touch.

    When was SY Design born?

That's a good way to ask the question, as I could well describe SYD's

development with a conception, gestation and birth. Conception of

the idea of producing fashion as an aspect of my textile art was when

I was asked to produce a garment as part of the Bunbury Felters Walk

at SWFF 2012. Most of the garments I produce now are what is called

seamless and constructed as a whole piece, however the piece that I

made for SWFF 2012 wasn't, it was structured in a formal fashion

where the fabric was key to the design.......this got many creative

juices flowing and 2 years down the track SYD is creating more and

    more art to wear.

I love the colours you've used in your latest range, what inspired

    those?

I am addicted to colour so no inspiration is necessary.....if it's

    vibrant...it's in!

Where will you be showing your range in 2014?

I'm pretty excited for SYD in 2014.

    February Boyup Brook Art Exhibition.

In essence SYD will be showing at Urban Couture (March 2014) under

the label 'Ooak Couture' a sister label to SYD where felted fabrics play

star to sophisticated designs and formal French construction

    techniques.

SYD's range will be represented at Balingup Small Farm Field Day

Fashion Show and Market Stall in March 2014

May 2014 I am guest artist at Lesmurdie Arts and Crafts Exhibition

    2014

Long weekend and Easter Denmark Art Markets and Roleystone Art

    Markets throughout the year.

And online with our annual photo shoot for 2014 range around

    October.

No doubt more will pop up throughout the year so I better get started

    now!

How can your pieces be purchased?

Pieces can be purchased at the galleries and markets I attend. Parts of

my range as they are one of a kind will be available at Jalbrook Gallery

Balingup and Boyup Brook Visitors Centre. I am happy to post images

online via my facebook page www.facebook.com/SallyYoungDesign for

purchase. In 2014 I am hoping to build an online shop from my website

www.sallyyoung.com.au . To keep up to date with whats happening and

what's available just pop into my website now and again for a browse.

    Describe a typical SY woman?

I find it really difficult to describe a SYD woman as when I think I have the

dynamic pegged someone just blows my theory out of the water. One

thing though is that she 'Dares to be herself' and that to me makes my

heart sing. Everyone of my garments is one of a kind and they literally

    Emerging Model Teagan Cox

Where do you live and how old are you?I live in Dunsborough, Western Australia and Im 17 years old. How long have you been modelling and have you had any training?I have only ever done one photo shoot which was for Sea Dreamer the label. Ihad no training for that at all, it was just fun and relaxed. I also volunteered to bea model for the Sea Dreamer pop up store at The Pop-Up Collaborative. Are you working?Ive only just finished school and have a job at Artezen Caf Dunsborough. Itsthe best atmosphere to work in and everyone that works there is so friendly andhappy. I havent been there for long but its the job where Ive felt mostwelcome. Knowing that I work in a friendly and happy environment makes mehappier and I'm glad that I dont dread going to work every day! What would your friends say is your best feature? My friends have told me that they love being around me because I'm energeticand easy to talk to. I always help them out and am always there for them whenthey need me. I have bubbly, positive and happy personality, so I guess thatmakes it a pleasant environment! If you could be the face of any label or brand, who/what would it be?I would love to be the face of Valentino by Valentino Clemente LudovicoGaravani known as a famous Italian fashion designer. Valentino is known for hisexquisite couture creations and gorgeous red carpet gowns throughout hiscareer. I admire his work and I would love to have a part in showing off hisDesigns.

'find' their owner, it constantly amazes me. Each one has its own

personality and they find their perfect mate. So I guess every woman is

    potentially a SY woman................

Your dream photo-shoot location? My dream photo shoot location would have to be in a tropical rain forest. I can just picture it all in my head. Being in the middle of the beautiful scenerywould make an epic picture. There is a tropical rain forest in Dominica, it has amazing waterfalls all throughout and is surrounded by exotic wildlife species.

How long have you been working as a makeup artist and what do you like most about what you do?I have been in the industry for a total of 8 years fouryear previously in Sydney where I did my training in the art of Makeup application and skincare, these two travel together always! I love meetingdifferent people on a constant basis and teaching them about their skin andthe most suitablemakeup for them to use... for eye shape, skin tone, skintype etc... What makeup line/s do you use?I use MAC cosmetics. What eye and lip colours are strong this season? There is always room for many different colours and styles of makeup, I never follow any trends as such, always listening to what my client wouldlike and advising on the suitability to their face.. Saying that we have seen a comeback in the darkcrimson lipstick and a move away from the nudes, for eyes there is a move away from dark smokey to more natural with heavy liner, or a pop ofcolour green, blue, purple! I say whatever you like and suits you is what you wear!! What is the most common mistake you see in makeup application?Oh dear, the face mask I call it!!! Ick how awful it looks, where the foundation is too dark for the complexion and there is a definite line around thejaw line where the application has stopped suddenly!!!

Definitive Faces Dunsborough Spray Tanning& Makeup

Do you offer makeup lessons?Yes ! Brides would be a large part of your clientele, living in the south-west, is the fresh natural look still popular with bridal parties?Yes it is the natural looking bride although some do like the darker smoky look...foundation is usually dewy although some do like the very FrenchMatt look which is heavily powdered with no sheen.. not too popular though. False lashes are very popular and there are so many shapes andsizes to suit each individual... Do you offer a mobile service?Yes I do, with both Makeup and Tanning.

    ANN-MARIE WILSONN - 0407 380 065facebook.com/Definitive-Faces-Dunsborough-Spray-Tanning-Makeup

    Photo (left) by Envy Photography

Your spray tans are also very popular, can you tellus about the product you use?I use Naked Tan which is a two hour tan solution, with abeautiful scent, no nasty chemical odour. It is greenbase so does not go orange. It would have to be themost natural looking tan product on the market... It isalso ECO certified. I love perfection and that is what Iseek with every tan application, so that no one can tellthat you have had a spray tan.... :-)

    Lagoon Swim

This would be the perfect place to get some stunning pictures. Which models do you admire and why?Ever since I saw Cara Delevingne modelling for Victoria Secret I fell in love with her. She was named the BFA's Model of the Year in fall 2012 which is avery big achievement. I admire her a lot and how much she succeeds in her modelling career. Watching her on TV or just seeing her in photo shoots iswonderful I think her modelling work is amazing. She is a very talented girl and has a lot of beauty. What else are you doing with your life in 2014?This is my first year having no school so it's going to be very different for me. I am planning on studying a bit while also working part-time. After I finish mystudy I am planning on going travelling for a bit. This is something I've been wanting to do for a while and now I am able to start saving for it. I want to dothe typical Europe trip this year. There is so much to see over there and I want to do it while I have a year or two off until Uni. When did you open Lagoon Swim?July 2010. What inspired the name? Many years ago I was sitting at the beautiful Yallingup Lagoonwith my babies and it came to me that I'd call my future littleswimwear boutique Lagoon Swim, perfect, my favourtite place inthe world. It was years later that I founded my business here and it all justfell into place. How would you define Lagoon's products?I like to source original products from all over the world, mainlyone-off pieces not available anywhere else in the country. Describe your typical customer?A Lagoon Swim girl is a lover of nature, the beach and the simplebut beautiful things in life. What can we expect to see in Lagoon in 2014?Some new swim lines from the U.S, Camilla and some newhomewares. The more unique and hard-to-find the better. That'sthe way we like it. We don't like to see the same products in otherstores. Shopping should be an experience where you feel lucky tofind what you love and then enjoy it for many years to come.
