WORKOUT CLOTHES

Following reading week, many of us neglect the gym and become caught in the madness and stress of midterms, final assignments, and exams. But it’s important to stay active, especially during this time to keep you feeling energized and to also boost brain power. A half an hour with the squat bar may be far down your priority list, but stylish fitness wear in spring’s freshest colours may change your mind. Shades of chartreuse, lemon yellow, and minty teal are enough to inspire the laziest ladies to throw their hair back and hit the elliptical. Plus, who said the treadmill couldn’t be your runway?

MAKEUP TIPSTrying to cover up the bags under your eyes from all-nighters at Weldon? Here are a few simple tips that will keep you looking fresh and fabulous.

FACEInstead of applying a full-coverage foundation every morning, a fast, simple solution is BB cream or tinted moisturizer. Both provide sheer coverage, moisturizing effects, and a fresh-faced glow. A great drug store tinted moisturizer is CoverGirl Aqua Smoothers. A more high-end alternative is the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream, which provides an impressive SPF 35 as an added benefit.

EYESStaying up all night is to be expected during finals, and a lack of sleep can leave your eyes looking droopy and puffy. Garnier’s Anti-Dark Circle Roll-on eye brightener revives the delicate under-eye area, making you look more awake. For a polished look, a simple swipe of gel eye shadow and a coat of mascara will accentuate your eyes without coming across as too made-up. Urban Decay’s Naked Palettes flatter every eye colour and skin tone, and offer a variety of different colour combinations, while MAC offers a variety of higher end mascaras at affordable price points.

LIPSWith the dry winter air carrying over into spring, lip balm is a must to keep your lips supple and chap-free. Luckily, tinted lip balms exist to make achieving a pretty, polished pout quick and easy. Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments, which are available in a variety of different shades, are ultra-moisturizing, and if you want a more saturated colour, a quick swipe of any of Revlon’s pink-toned lipsticks can brighten up your look.

HAIRMessy buns and ponytails are the go-to hairstyles during exam season. They are simple, low-maintenance, and most importantly, they keep your hair out of your face. To spice up your ponytail, any inexpensive decorative hair tie will do the trick. Dry shampoo is also a great product to use any time of the year, allowing you to sneak around for a few days without washing your hair.

VEGAN TREATS

The crazy final assignment and exam season has begun, and we all need to treat ourselves during stressful times. When I say “treat”, I mean a delicious, healthy, and 100% vegan dessert. After this semester is over, or after you receive that high mark on your exam, treat yourself! Use this as motivation to study and succeed, because indulging in these recipes will be a reward well earned. But, if you can’t wait, vegan desserts work as super yummy study snacks too.

Cassandra Giugno “treats” us to three delicious vegan recipes

AVOCADO LIME SORBET

1/2 cup avocado1/2 cup non-dairy milk (coconut milk or almond milk tastes great too!)1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice2-4 tbsp agave nectar (more or less depending on how sweet you want it!)

A sweet and light study snack!

Purée avocado, milk, lime juice and agave in a food processor until smooth and transfer into an airtight container to freeze overnight.

RAW CRANBERRY COCONUT TRUFFLES

1 cup unsweetened dried cranberries1/2 cup unsweetened dessicated coconut (plus 1/4 cup to roll them in after)2 tbsp raw agave nectar

OPTIONAL1 tbsp cacao pwder1/4 cup chopped nuts1/4 tspn pure coconut extract

A much healthier option than Tim Horton’s’ Timbits!

Process everything in the food processor until it comes together to become sticky dough.Shape the dough into equal sized balls and roll them in the extra coconut.

VEGAN TREATSVEGAN CINNAMON ROLL PANCAKES

PANCAKES1 cup all purpose flour1/2 cup whole wheat flour1 1/2 cup non-dairy milk1 flaxseed egg (1 tbsp flax seed powder + 3 tbsp warm water2 tspn baking poder2 tbsp melted vegan butter1 tbsp sugar1/2 tspn salt

CINNAMON FILLING1/3 cup brown sugar1 tbsp melted vegan butter1 tbsp cinnamon

Let this filling sit so it can thicken up before you add it to your pancakes.

*If your cinnamon filling is too liquidly, try adding more sugar. Or, I suggest not completely melting the vegan butter before combining it with the sugar and cinnamon.

*If your filling is too dry and hasn’t created a sugar-like paste, try mixing it around to incorporate your butter more or adding an additional tablespoon of melted butter.

Perfect for the morning before or after your last exam!

Mix the flaxseed powder and water until thoroughly combined and then set aside until it starts to thicken about 3 -5 minutes.

Sift together your flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt; set aside. In a microwave or on a stovetop melt the two tablespoons of butter and combine with milk. After the flaxseed powder has thickened add it to the wet ingredients. Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ones, mixing until just combined. It’s okay if there are a few lumps; you don’t want to over-mix the batter.

Heat a non-stick pan or griddle with a nonstick spray or butter on medium heat. Using a 1/4 - 1/3 cup measure add the batter to the pan, using the measuring cup to spread out the batter. Reduce heat to medium-low and when you see bubbles starting to form, using a zip lock bag with a corner cut off, swirl the cinnamon filling starting from the center of the pancakes, just like a cinnamon roll. Make sure not to swirl the cinnamon filling too close to the edges or it will start to seep out. Cook your pancakes for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and then flip them quickly to the other side and cook an additional 2-3 minutes. Before moving onto your other pancakes, be sure to wipe your pan off and add a little more spray or butter.

What is your favourite magazine? You can never go wrong with Vogue, but I have always supported Canada’s top three fashion magazines. I used to prefer Flare over the other two, but thanks to Noreen Flanagan’s revitalization, Elle Canada is quickly rising to the top. With its tasteful humour and creative articles, Elle Canada is always an enjoyable read.

What is your favourite designer?Absolutely impossible to answer (yet here I am answering it)! There are designers I tend to like more than others, but I admire and respect the aesthetics of each and every one of them. It’s not so much about design, but talent, that I look for.
