SUCCESS STORY

OOKING at the problems that we are facing, it may be hard for the average South African to feel positive about the future of our beloved country. In the stream of misery unleashed on an unsuspecting public

by the media there is not much happy stuff to celebrate. This is because bad news sells better than good news. It’s strange but true.

However, if you look for them, we are constantly surrounded by examples of love and kindness in action and I am absolutely convinced that there is more love in the world than we realise.

Just look around you and you will see them, the small things…the shy smile, the gentle touch, the kind thought, the helping hand…

And there are the bigger things too. Look at the work being done by the local people working with orphaned and vulnerable children in the community, and those caring for the elderly and the terminally ill. The people who work to protect the ocean and the creatures in it, people who rescue and shelter animals in distress. Look at those who respond to emergencies in the community – many of them volunteers, and those who give what financial means they can to aid organisations responding to the many needs around us.

This may not make the headlines, but it makes a real difference in the world around us and as such, these are the unsung heroes in our community.

I am often reminded of the words of the Quaker Missionary, Etienne de Grellet, who left us with the reminder that I shall pass this way but once; any

good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being; let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

On a slightly different tack now, even the toughest times can work to the benefit of some people. Former Springbok rugby player and more recently hunting safari operator, Hennie le Roux, has an interesting tale to tell.

You might remember him from the 1995 Rugby Word Cup era. He was the player who gave former President Mandela his Springbok cap when he visited the team at Silvermine Nature Reserve. Nelson Mandela wore it frequently during that period. He called it his lucky cap, bringing the country together in support of the national team and the dream of a new united South Africa.

Well, Hennie recently landed a valuable herd of Buffalo, plus all the herd’s progeny produced over five years, free of charge, according to a report in the Saturday Dispatch. Here’s how it happened.

The herd of 20 Cape Buffalo valued at more than R4m, was once owned by the province and managed on behalf of taxpayers by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency at the Thomas Baines Game Reserve near Grahamstown. But in 2010 they crossed the drought-depleted Settlers Dam to Le Roux’s adjacent hunting mecca, Crown River Safari. The substantial Settler’s Dam usually forms a natural boundary between the two properties, but months of drought had left it almost empty, and the animals crossed over. They were trapped on Le Roux’s farm when the rains came and the dam filled again. In

papers before the Eastern Cape High Court, Le Roux said that even if the buffalo in question were from Thomas Baines, ownership of them had been lost because ECPTA had failed to maintain its boundary fences.

Judge John Smith found that the law was abundantly clear on the point. Ownership of game is only protected when game is held on land that is considered to be sufficiently enclosed. And the land is only considered to be sufficiently enclosed when it has been issued a formal ‘certificate of sufficient enclosure’ by the provincial premier. Thomas Baines reserve conceded it had no such certificate.

Maybe Hennie’s lucky cap is still working!

Ringside Boxing Gym’ Tyron Koen – Making a Strong Comeback!

There has been an amazing outpouring of love, prayers and best wishes for the recovery of RINGSIDE BOXING GYM’S Tyron Koen, who contracted a potentially fatal bout of malaria during the December holidays. Although it was touch and go at one stage, Tyron rallied under the support and care of dedicated medical professionals at Alberlito Hospital and, after some tense moments, he fought his way back from the brink to make a miraculous recovery. Both Kate and Tyron are overwhelmed by the love and support they have received from the community and look forward to thanking you all in person when Tyron returns to the gym in the very near future.

NORTH COAST TO SURF THE WEB ON FIBREM

ITSOL director Warren Bricknell discusses the benefits of FTTH over traditional copper wire infrastructure. ‘Fibre optic technology is cheaper for

cable operators to lay and maintain, more resilient to the elements and has no “resale” value, which makes it fairly unattractive to the second-hand market, unlike copper wire.

‘Fibre optic cable is relatively “future proof” and currently has the capacity to meet any current and future demands, therefore the layer one part of FTTH (the physical fibre) will require no further upgrades in the near future.

Both Dunkirk Estate and Seaward Estate in Ballito have already signed up for FTTH with Link Africa and MITSOL.

Dunkirk Estate general manager Robin Streit, is enthusiastic about their FTTH. The process started in November 2015 and all homes in Dunkirk have now been passed, with the first homes ready for installation in the next few days.

Streit outlines the FTTH process for his estate, One of the big “plus” factors to getting the fibre optic cable laid by Link Africa is that they hardly disrupted traffic on our estate – instead of digging up roads and verges, they have mastered the concept of using existing service ducts as well as stormwater and sewer pipes, and it entails simply threading the fibre through the piping.

‘It was quick and easy with minimal interruption for the estate. To be ready to roll in such a short space of time, including the festive season break, is impressive.

Bricknell, who has been energetically driving the FTTH initiative throughout KZN for the past year, is convinced that FTTH will revolutionise the way homes and businesses operate in the future.

Says Bricknell, ‘With the FTTH options of high-speed data transmission, the world is our oyster in terms of communications and what we can achieve. Just to give some examples of speeds, a two hour movie can be downloaded much faster, depending on the speed for which you have signed up: 10mbps – it will take 21 minutes 28 seconds, 20mbps – it will take 10 minutes 44 seconds, 50 mbps – it will take 04 minutes 17 seconds, while at a speed of 100mbps it will only take 02 minutes, 08 seconds to download.

‘Upload speeds are equally fast – just think what this could do for your business when using Cloud-based services, or storing your personal data such as precious photographs and movies in the safety of the Cloud.

‘Furthermore, according to the Fibre to the Home Council - an international body that regulates FTTH systems around the world - an added bonus of having a fibre to the home service installed is that it boosts the capital value of a home by around five per cent.’

For more information, please contact MITSOL on (031) 566-2451, email [email protected] or visit www.ftth.mitsol.co.za.

IT was something to see – a

phalanx of powerful Harley Davidsons lined up at the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito

offering members of the public a chance to ride on the back of a

Harley for a small donation. It was a fundraiser for the

Feline Feral Fund, a Ballito based organisation led by Sharon Cossey caring for the homeless cats in our community.

Andre Roodt from Harley Motorcycle Adventure Tours

organised the event after a chat on Radio Life & Style and on Saturday Ballito resonated to the steady beat

of those Vee Twin Harley motors as the curious and the brave got to experience the thrill of riding the

rolling thunder.

R1200 was raised for the fund and the Durban chapter of the

Harley Owners Group won a whole lot of new friends in Ballito.

Joe Erasmus – Executive Head, Ashton International College

FROM THE HEADMASTER’S DESK

IT is that time of year

when you open the Newspaper and see the display of school advertisements. All schools use this opportunity as a ‘boasting right’ and why they feel their school is the best choice. It is an opportunity for schools to showcase their academic, sport and cultural accolades and hope that these assist potential parents make that very important choice.

There are many questions to be asked, boarding vs. day scholar; co-ed vs. monastic schools; new school vs. family tradition or sibling’s school. There is no manual for parents and students. It is important to make the right choice.

I am of the opinion that there is a school for every child and schools cater differently for these needs. Whether it is academics, sports or culture, monastic or co-ed, the real dynamics is the academic record and ethos of any school.

Every family will have a different list of priorities and requirements. A parent will make a choice, often through their eyes and expectations instead of what is functional and beneficial for their child.

Academic progress should always be of paramount importance, but also what is best for the child to ensure that they reach their full potential. If a child is not comfortable into their surroundings and feels pressured by the expectations of their parents, teachers and peers, school becomes a place of anxiety, stress and strife and their potential to succeed is stunted. Every student is important. Every student has a unique strength that should be embraced to encourage them to do better in the things that need improving. If you crush the spirit, you crush the mind.

We live in a society where we are constantly challenged. Our children have to make decisions based on peer pressure at a young age. Teachers spend more time with your child every week than you will as parents. I have mentioned this once before, but I would like to reiterate: One teacher can see up to 100 students in a day, a total of 500 students in a week. Teachers get close to their students, they see their moods and their confidence levels (high and low).

So, when looking for a school, don’t look at a scorecard of rugby or swimming, but look for

good intention, integrity, credibility, family ethos, respect, accountability and responsibility. There is no perfect school, but a good school will continually strive to grow and nurture students to be of sound character and quality – despite all challenges that may arise.

No school can do this alone. The employment of highly qualified teachers with a passion for our youth with the backing of supportive parents creates an ethos of sound moral standing within a school community.

If you are shopping for the perfect school, you will be sorely disappointed. If you shop for the best school for your child, you will grow with them in the knowledge that they are in an environment that will allow them to flourish and succeed to the best of their ability.

A RADIO SUCCESS STORY:

TASH B PILATES

ON Monday 22 February, when protests along the N2 highway caused chaos and brought morning

traffic between Ballito and Umhlali to a standstill, motorists stuck in the jam had little else to do other than listen to the radio.

Radio Life & Style kept the North Coast up to date with the latest developments on the traffic and protest situation that morning, but just as things were reaching fever-pitch, the sound of a familiar calming voice broke through the airwaves to ease motorists’ frayed nerves: “Stop – wherever you are right now, spend the next 30 seconds being kind to your body…”

By now, Radio Life & Style listeners will no doubt be familiar with the sound of Tash Barnard’s voice as she gives a free dose of calm and mindfulness through her radio advert for Tash B Pilates. Since it first debuted on air, her interactive advert has become something of a phenomenon - resonating with North Coast listeners as it urges them to take just half a minute out of their day to check in with their body, have quick stretch, release tension, adjust posture, and breeeeathe…

Tash worked with Radio Life & Style to bring the ad to life and has been blown away with the responses she’s had so far. When she came up with the ad concept after a brainstorming session with her team of instructors at her Ballito studio, she could never have imagined how such a simple and short message could be so impactful or just how people would take it to heart.

From the flood of messages and mails she has received from friends, clients and colleagues; to the random encounters she’s had with complete strangers coming up to her in the shops to compliment her on the ad’s feel-good message: the feedback has been incredible.

Part of the ad’s success, it must be said, lies in the fact that Tash’s unmistakable energy and personality shines through it. While creating awareness for her thriving Pilates business is obviously the aim of the clever little ad, Tash wanted the ad’s message to serve people in a broader sense, regardless of whether they are into Pilates or not. If the ad brings a little sunshine to someone’s day and boosts their confidence by helping them walk taller and keep their chin up, then

it’s achieved its goal as far as Tash is concerned. As she says in the advert: “It’s never too late to make a positive change.”

Tash lives her brand without trying. Apart from being the embodiment of health and Pilates posture, she’s a successful businesswoman, a loving mother and wife, an active member of her church and a constant supporter of charity causes (with a special connection to Vision 153, the Pink Phoenix Cancer Foundation, and the Specialised Rescue Unit).

As a local role-model making waves on the North Coast, Tash and her Pilates studio are set to go from strength to strength, and Life & Style is proud to have partnered with Tash in bringing her message to the masses. To find out how Tash and her team can help change your life today, visit tashbpilates.co.za or pop in to their studio in Sanhall Office Park – it’s the best investment you can make for your body.

Just like we did for Tash B, Life & Style can get your advertising message out to the people who need to hear it - contact us today at [email protected] to find out more.

Pam’s shopping basket selection is made before entering any of the above stores, and totally without bias or prejudice. Th is means that a particular supplier might be fortunate enough to have more than one special in her selection at a given date, but another supplier could benefi t from the next selection. As a rule it is always a good idea to compare prices of two small items against one large item – the result can be surprising. Also, it is always advisable to check your till slip as items on special are sometimes incorrectly charged at normal prices.

Email her [email protected] and let us help you in the quest for fairtrade and good value. This feature is supported by the Dolphin Coast Residents & Ratepayers Association DOCRRA helping you to budget more effectively.

I haven’t totalled my basket this week as the items are so variable in size and quality. Th is demonstrates when you see specialoff ers, see good prices it’s important to compare eggs with eggs!

This is an easy treat despite its show-off qualities when done before your very eyes at your very own table in very posh restaurants. You will get about a dozen of these slim pancakes from a 14cm pan with this recipe.

75g plain flour. 25g sugar. 1 whole egg plus one egg yolk. 20g melted butter. 1 tbs fresh orange juice. 600ml milk.

Sieve the flour and sugar into a bowl, make a well and pour into it the egg, the egg yolk, orange juice and the melted butter. Blend well with a spoon then give it a good beating with rotary whisk until smooth – no lumps.

Brush your pan with thin coat of vegetable oil and heat it up to a shimmer but before it smokes. You don’t fry pancakes – the oil is essential merely to stop them sticking to the pan. Pour a large tablespoon of the mixture into the pan and immediately tilt it around to spread the mix so that it covers the whole base of the pan.

Ease the edges of the pancake from the pan and turn it with a flipper or palette knife after about 20 seconds. Give it the same side. The first side will have the browned patter and that’s the side that should be on view when you roll it or fold it.

For sauce. 40g butter. 3 tbs orange juice. 1 tbs lemon juice. 60g brown treacle sugar. 2 tbs brandy.

Melt the butter, sugar and fruit juices in a large frying pan and when the mixture begins to thicken turn down the heat. Put each pancake into the pan and fold it into four or quarters. When all have been folded, add the brandy. Light it as soon as it sizzles and take to the table at once.

Unless you are rich enough to get a miniature bottle of Curacao orange liqueur, you can improve this sauce by concentrating the fresh orange juice – boil it rapidly until it reduces by a quarter.

I got carried away once and added a tsp of grated zest of orange peel to the mixture and it worked very well.

Savoury pancakes are easily adapted. Omit the sugar and fruit juices, replace with a pinch or two of salt to taste but add a tsp of curry powder and a dash of black pepper. Fill with warmed slices of roast beef or pork, or grilled peaches and a tbs of chutney.

I like a filling of black mushrooms fried in butter with a smashed clove of garlic and sprinkle of salt and black pepper.

SO WHAT HAPPENED TO

PANCAKE DAY?

Shrove Tuesday – the day we eat pancakes to mark the beginning of Lent, that time of diet and meagre eating if you follow the Christian run-up to Easter – seemed to slip past everyone this year.

Crepes Suzette

So here is the most glamorous recipe that reminds us: pancakes, sweet or savoury, are delicious real-food fast-food.

INGREDIENTS

•2/3 cup pomegranate juice (no sugar added)•2/3 cup granulated sugar•2 to 3 drops orange-flower water (optional)•4 cups club soda, chilled•1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (from about 2 medium limes)•Lime slices, for garnish•Ice1.Heat the pomegranate juice in a small saucepan over medium heat until steam rises from the surface and a few bubbles have formed around the perimeter of the pan, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.2.Add the sugar and stir until it has dissolved and the mixture is no longer cloudy, about 5 minutes. Stir in the orange-flower water (if using) and let the syrup cool to room temperature, about 30 minutes. Refrigerate until chilled, about 1 hour.3.Pour the chilled pomegranate syrup, club soda, and lime juice into a 6-cup pitcher and stir gently to combine (stirring too vigorously will deflate the fizz). Float lime slices in the pitcher. Serve over ice with additional lime slices.

FEELING LOW? Taking Guesswork Out of the Equation

A PROPERTY inspection is a valuable tool when buying or even selling a property. No property, new or old, is perfect

and when faults are identified, Inspect-A-Home inspectors can suggest possible solutions for fixing them.

Our inspections are thorough, taking approximately 2-3 hours to completely inspect a standard 3 bedroom house. The inspection covers every aspect of the property from roof to boundary walls and includes:

EXTERNAL: Roof, flashings, gutters, roof cavity, plumbing in the roof cavity, geyser installation compliance, eaves, super structure, windows, doors, balconies and patios.

INTERNAL: Floor coverings, skirting, windows, doors, walls, cupboards, fittings, cornices, ceilings. Bathrooms: shower, bath, basins, toilet, tiling, fittings.

OUTBUILDINGS: Staff quarters, storerooms, garages, swimming pool, water runoff, storm water drainage, tennis courts, gates, retaining and boundary walls.

Inspect-A-home does not only report on apparent defects, but gives preventative and maintenance advice too. If something is found that will cause problems in the future, it will be in the report and if the advice is followed, lots of money can be saved on future repair costs.

“Prevention is better (and cheaper) than cure” rings very true for home maintenance. In this way, Inspect-A-Home can save you thousands of Rand and relieve you of the stress of unexpected future repairs.

IT is

important for me to be clear: Depression is a serious health issue. It can range from mild to severe. There are many different causes of depression. Not all cases can be treated in the same way.

BUT. It is also important to know: Depression can be treated naturally and it can be done without taking prescription drugs. There is hope!

DEPRESSION: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON CAUSES?

DYSBIOSIS - our gut health and mental health are intricately connected. Leaky gut, inflammation, candida over-growth, low levels of intestinal flora etc all negatively effect brain chemistry and function. FOOD ALLERGIES - any food one has

a sensitivity to will cause inflammation. This inflammation is present all over the body, including the brain, and has shown to affect ones mental health. HEAVY METALS - have also been

shown to alter brain chemistry. Copper, lead, and mercury are several heavy metals, amongst many, known to cause depression. ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS - Pesticides

as well as chemicals found in common household cleaners, building materials, metal exposure, and tobacco can increase your environmental toxin load, making one more prone to depression.HORMONES – the fluctuation and

imbalance of hormones has been been linked to depression. This includes reproductive hormones (particularly in women) as well as those involved with adrenal function and blood sugar balance.NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES – (caused

by stress, toxicity, poor diet, unhealthy lifestyle etc) affect the transformation of key amino acids into necessary neurotransmitters i.e. a vitamin B6 deficiency prevents the transformation of tyrosine into L-Dopa or L-Dopa into dopamine. And low levels of dopamine is a well known cause of depression.

HOW TO BEAT DEPRESSION FOR GOOD

The first step is to get checked by your trusted natural healthcare practitioner to determine the root cause of your depression. Next, address the issue using natural solutions. Every case will be different, however, here are 7 simple steps to help get your happy self back:

1. NUTRITION - The quality of food we put in our body has a direct effect on our mental health. Fat-soluble nutrients, for example, are essential for optimal brain function. It is important to eliminate damaging vegetable oils and trans-fats (found in all refined and processed foods) and replace these with essential omega-3 fish oils, saturated fats such as coconut oil, farm butter

and animal fats, raw nuts and seeds, olives, avocados and cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil and macadamia nut oil. Next, eliminate all food sensitivities (gluten, dairy, sugar etc) then focus on eating a healthy nutrient dense, anti-inflammatory, real food diet, with adequate amounts of anti-inflammatory fatty acids. Changing your diet can be extremely helpful at optimizing brain health and keeping inflammation at bay.2. DIGESTION - To restore

digestive health it would be wise to supplement with digestive enzymes and high quality probiotics. Unbalanced gut microbes can contribute to depression. If you have low stomach acid levels a good HCL supplement should also be considered. Adequate stomach acid is very important for healthy digestion and the breakdown of protein into neurotransmitter-building amino acids.3. METHYL-FOLATE AND B12 –

support methylation i.e. neurotransmitter production. A vast majority of the population struggle with impaired methylation therefore it is essential to supplement with these 2 nutrients. 4. MAGNESIUM - has a very

relaxing or calming effect on our nervous system. It is needed for over 300 enzymatic reactions in our body. Magnesium is one of those minerals that tends to be deficient in our food supply therefore supplementation is advisable.5. VITAMIN D3 – deficiency has

been strongly linked with depression. Have your physician check your vitamin D level and supplement at least 2000IU of D3 or expose your body to 15-20 minutes of sunlight daily. 6. FELIX (available at health

stores) – is a natural anti-depressant that utilises a clinically studied, proprietary extract of saffron called Satiereal. Clinical studies have highlighted saffron’s ability to enhance mood and its powerful anti-depressant qualities. Even better is the fact that it can be used on its own or as an adjunct to allopathic anti-depressants and is safe with no known contra-indications or reported side effects.7. EXERCISE - has powerful

antidepressant and mood altering effects by stimulating the production of endorphins. However, be careful of excess aerobic exercise as it can stimulate increased cortisol levels. Rather perform higher intensity, short duration exercise which, according to studies, decreases depression, fatigue and anger after exercise.

FINAL POINTYou are not designed to feel sad

and be on permanent anti-depressant medication. Get your life back by seeking help and taking the necessary steps to support a happy mood. There is always hope. I know you can do it!

7 NATURAL SOLUTIONS

FEELING LOW? "The trouble with dieting," many

people say, "is that it takes too long. But there are ways to rev up your metabolism so you burn calories and lose weight more quickly. Check out these no-fail jump starts.WATCH YOUR FLUIDS

1. Drink green tea. Research has proved that the green-tea drinkers burned about 70 additional calories in a 24-hour period. This is the result of metabolism-enhancing antioxidants known as catechins, which are found in green tea.

2. Avoid calories in a glass. Monitor your intake of juice, soda, coffee drinks and wine. If you consume one of each of those beverages during the day, you'll have taken in at least 800 extra calories by night-time — and you'll still be hungry. START LIFTING

3. Buy a set of five-pound weights. Strength training builds lean muscle tissue, which burns more calories — at work or at rest — 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The more lean muscle you have, the faster you'll slim down.

4. Lose the salt. Sodium contributes to water retention, making you look and feel bloated. Hidden sources include soups, canned foods and drinks, salty snacks such as chips and pretzels and many pre-packaged foods.HEAT THINGS UP

5. Spice it up. Capsaicin, a compound found in chillis, may increase your body's release of stress hormones such as adrenaline, which

can speed up your metabolism and your ability to burn calories.

6. Get some sleep. Women who get less than four hours of sleep per night have a slower metabolism than those who snooze for a full eight hours.MOVE AROUND

7. Go for an evening walk. Exercising at any time is good for you. But evening activity may be particularly beneficial because many people's metabolism slows down toward the end of the day.

8. Eat every meal. Skipping meals will not make you lose weight faster.

That strategy backfires because your body thinks food is in

short supply, so it slows your metabolism in

order to conserve energy.

9. Add 20 minutes of exercise per day. Take the stairs instead of

the lift; window-shop with your best

friend rather than sit over coffee. Taking the

dog for a walk, gardening and even housecleaning all increase the number of calories you expend. DRINK UP!

10. Water. Your body needs water in order to efficiently metabolise stored fat. An easy eight glasses a day (at least!) will keep your system running smoothly.

11. Don't go for the gimmicks. Desperation can tempt us to try anything, but you and I both know these schemes don't work. Be realistic. Jump-start your weight-loss program in ways that make sense, and not only will you be thinner, you'll be happier too.

THIS IS THE FASTEST WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT SAFELY

PEOPLE love a quick fix. They rejoice at advice like: “just take

this pill” or “swallow these capsules” and instantly transform your hair. However, leading trichologists, experts in the health of hair and the scalp, warn that vitamins and supplements aren’t the cure-all for hair loss, brittleness and dullness. If you’re looking to improve the health of your hair you need to start by looking at what’s on your plate.

What you eat has an amazing impact on the health of your hair. An improperly balanced diet can starve your hair of the nutrients it needs – you need to feed your follicles! For example, hair is made up of protein; therefore eating sufficient amounts are of vital importance. In fact, the trick to getting the most out of the protein you consume is having it in the early hours of the day. This is when follicles require this type of nutrition the most. So find ways to incorporate protein like eggs, bacon or nuts into your breakfast routine. OTHER IMPORTANT NUTRIENTS, VITAMINS AND MINERALS NECESSARY FOR HEALTHIER HAIR AND SCALP ARE: Iron : It carries oxygen to the hair and this promotes growth. Make iron-rich, dark leafy

greens – such as spinach and kale – a mainstay of your diet. Lentils and chicken are also great sources of iron.

Zinc : Exercise and sweating can lead to significant losses of zinc; another vital hair growth mineral. To get what your hair needs, eat high-zinc foods like lamb, turkey, pumpkin seeds and chocolate.

B-complex Vitamins : Biotin, niacin and cobalamin are types of b-complex vitamins that help restore shine and thickness to strands of hair. Some of the best food sources for these vitamins are whole grains, eggs, avocados and legumes.

Once you have a balanced sensible diet -

and if you still feel it needs enriching - you can complement it with a handful of vitamin and mineral supplements to fill any gaps and boost your nutrient intake. Either way, when you have healthy eating habits, healthy hair and scalp should soon follow. And who knows, with all that good, nutritious food you may see improvements in your hairline and your waistline.

PERSONAL BRAND REHAB REINVENTING YOUR STYLE

CLOTHES maketh the man, they say. And it’s true. The clothes you wear have a major impact on how people perceive you. In fact, the people you work with have already built up their own perceptions, opinions and judgements about you not

only based on who you are and what you’re good at but also on what you wear. In other words, they’ve “branded” you.

And as your company’s representative, your dress code etiquette is very important. The client you’re about to walk to your boss’ office will judge you by what you’re wearing and will go as far as judging the company based on your attire too. Therefore those one-size-too-small jeans you insist on wearing are not just detrimental to your figure, but they’re twice as detrimental to you, and to your company’s reputation.

CRINGING? HERE’S HOW YOU CAN REBRAND YOURSELF.

UNDERSTAND YOUR BRANDTo know what needs changing, you’re going to have to start off

by finding out what the people you work with think about you. A colleague, mentor or HR representative might be your trusted go to person. Ask him to describe how you’re currently perceived by others based on your dress code. And take an honest look at yourself compared to your respected colleagues. As dress codes can mean different things in different companies, ask yourself: “If suddenly I were called into a meeting with my seniors, could I go dressed in what I’ve chosen to wear today?”

IDENTIFY YOUR NEW LOOKIf you’re vying for a promotion, no one’s going to take you seriously

if you rock up to the office in your noisy flip flops. And certainly not in a conservative environment where the dress code is formal. The same principle applies in an environment where jeans and sneakers are the staples. While it’s okay to dress above your company’s dress code, walking into the office with your church attire might be inconsistent with the company’s culture. Align your new look with the company standards.

MAKE THE CHANGENow that you know what brand you want to be known for, it’s time

to upgrade your wardrobe. Remember that what you’re really trying to do is update your personal style, not look like a runway model. Keep the skyscraper heels and tuxedos out of the office. Looking good? Now you are better placed for that promotion!

FORRUNNERS, BYRUNNERS

EVERY day of my life I see evidence of people’s inability to accept the flow of life. Yes, some people are dealt some

tough blows; the yoga way is still to accept with dignity and equanimity.

In “The Untethered Soul” Michael Singer says “even if you are incarcerated unjustly, pretend you are Ghandi”. Life isn’t a play that you can direct and produce. A lot does depend on us and how we choose to live our lives but the big test is how we choose to deal with it when things are not as we would script them.

Facing circumstances bravely doesn’t mean you don’t care. We are taught that it seems uncaring to hold a good attitude. Moving through a yoga class takes you out of that cluttered head space that just seems to get more cluttered when things aren’t going according to plan.

Releasing tightness in the body releases emotional, mental and physical strains. The spaces are cleared. Deep breathing makes one feel grateful for the gift of life. In the tough times you question more, it’s good – but try not to see the future a certain way.

The way you imagine things and the outcome you see for yourself and others seldom turns out that way – it’s back to accepting that it’s not for you to decide. I often see someone with a determined look decide they are going to do a certain posture and their body just says NO!

It’s fine, you make the inquiry and try to connect with why it is not possible. Yoga shows you all the time that things do not just go according to your little golden rules all of the time, it’s the ultimate acceptance of what is.

Some people have great difficulty

accepting that there are problems of alignment and physicality – it’s hard to hear that there are elements that just aren’t there – it means serious work. In the same way most just cannot relax into life and be happy with what they are confronted with.

The smallest step toward saying – OK, so I can’t change this – let me release – just a little, will make a difference. It’s the same with your practice – a tiny release of hip a small deeper engagement with atrophied muscles a good dollop of determination assist you to apply yourself to making better, whether it is your collapsing posture or life itself.

The sick and ailing also carry a terrible burden of guilt for making everyone so darn miserable. Release those you love from feeling bad about themselves. Sometimes things can be fixed and sometimes they just can’t – so you cannot spend mental and physical energy fighting against stuff.

Use your energy “CHI” and your life force “PRANA” in the direction of gratitude. Gratitude for those you love and have gratitude for being able to move and breathe, gratitude for all the gifts of life and love and above all gratitude for the mysteries and ways of this absolutely amazing uncontrollable life we live.

Take me, tumble me, toss me about, drop me, lift me, bend me, and maybe even break me. It’s the undeniable ebb and flow and rush of stuff that we will all see the point of if we give up the devastating quest to control.

TRUE PASSION YOU ARE IN GOOD HANDS

IT seems like becoming a Yoga teacher is a popular thing now a days but in my opinion there is no better

training than the Iyengar Yoga System, but it is no quick way in!

I was already a qualified Yoga teacher through the YYI association (which come from Iyengar teachings). This also took three years of commitment but it wasn’t enough I wanted more understanding, more detail, more of everything and Iyengar Yoga provided me with that. It is such a thorough safe training system of Yoga, understanding of alignment, sequencing, timing and props which are essential for an Asana practice of Yoga for each individual.

The Preliminary course takes three years to achieve, the standard is extremely high and is the same throughout the world. Although I had spent just under two years training in Australia, I was accredited with only one year of study here and still had to complete two full years in South Africa. I would not change it though, the experience and knowledge I gained from the two amazing Senior Iyengar Yoga teachers, (which for the record can take up to twenty years), in Australia is irreplaceable as is my training here in South Africa.

Together with my Iyengar Yoga qualification and my Advanced Classical Pilates qualification which includes all the equipment, you are in safe hands when you come to a class

with me at True Passion.

My “Passion” is giving all my knowledge to help you have a better body and well-being whether it be Iyengar Yoga or Classical Pilates.

•Adele "froze" when her performance of All I Ask at the Grammy Awards on Monday (15Feb16) was marred by audio issues.

The 27-year-old singer caused a storm on Twitter when she belted out her emotive ballad, with fans commenting that her singing was less than perfect.

"The piano mics fell on to the piano strings, that's what the guitar sound was. It made it sound out of tune. S**t happens," Adele tweeted after the incident.

During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, due to air on Thursday (18Feb16), Adele further explained the situation and admitted she was left "embarrassed" by the audio mishap.

“I heard it straight away,” she said. “And I knew where the mic was and I wanted to turn around and lift it up, but I froze.

Adele later tweeted that she was going to have a day off from her diet and treat herself to an In-N-Out Burger following the awards ceremony. However, she added to Ellen that she was overcome with emotion after the microphone troubles at the event. "I cried pretty much all day yesterday," she continued. "In fairness I would have cried if it went really well as well. If it was a stand out performance I would have cried as well. I always cry.”

•Walt Disney Studios is partnering with three-time GRAMMY®-winning singer/songwriter P!nk on the studio’s upcoming release “Alice Through the Looking Glass.”

P!nk will write and record an original song which will appear in the film and on the motion picture soundtrack from Walt Disney Records featuring four-time Academy Award® nominee Danny Elfman’s score. She has also recorded a cover version of the iconic song “White Rabbit” for the film’s marketing campaign.

“Alice Through the Looking Glass” is an all-new spectacular adventure featuring the unforgettable characters from Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories which stars Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska, Rhys Ifans, with Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen. The film opens in UK cinemas on May 27, 2016.

HELP SAVE ST. THOMAS’ ANGLICAN

CHURCH, VERULAM

THE Anglican Diocese of Natal is keen to repair and renovate the historic Church of St. Thomas in Verulam.

Ballito based architect, Ken Lever has agreed to carry out a detailed survey of the existing structure and finishes which are

in a very dilapidated state. However, it would be useful to have as much background information on the church building as possible in order to complete a full and accurate survey before detailed decisions can be made on the exact nature of the repair and renovation works.

If you have any photographs or other information on St. Thomas’ Church that you are prepared to share, Ken would be most grateful to hear from you.

The church in Wick Street, Verulam is thought to have been built around 1860 and it would be very sad if this piece of local history is lost.

Ken can be contacted on 082 657 0094 / 072 796 6345 / 032 586 1108 or by e mail: [email protected]

LIFE & STYLE AT THE NEW MINI CLUBMAN LAUNCH

Life & Style Motoring Team Dave Charles & Anton von Alleman at The Clubman Launch

The showroom had been turned into a mini casino complete with roulette and blackjack tables and the liquor flowed adding to the festivity while the new Mini Clubman remained shrouded beneath a white cloth, waiting for the reveal.

When at last the lights were dimmed and the spotlight fell on the shrouded mini, the sense of anticipation was palpable as the new car was revealed for the first time.

It certainly didn’t disappoint.Firstly the new Mini Clubman is not so

mini – it marks a distinct departure from its predecessors in that regard. It’s not a small car, yet it retains the distinctive Mini styling.

The Life & Style motoring team was there with Anton von Alleman sizing it up from a technical perspective and without yet having a chance to test drive the vehicle, initial impressions are very favourable.

We look forward to bringing you a more comprehensive review of the new Mini Clubman shortly.

THE new Mini Clubman was launched in style at SMG

Rocks in Umhlanga Rocks last week. The event was well attended by members of

the media and customers of SMG Rocks.

MOTORCYCLING MAKES YOU HAPPY: FA C T

MOTORCYCLING has topped a nationwide British poll on happiness.

The survey of 1514 people from across the UK, conducted by leading survey organisation ICM on behalf of Garderners' World, set out to find out what hobbies make people happy. This is an indicator of global trends in developed countries including South

Africa. When asked the question: "How

satisfied are you with your life nowadays?", Motorcycling received the most amount of 'strong positive' responses, ahead of Fishing with the second largest number of responses and Running, Swimming, Driving and Camping which had the third largest number of responses.

When asked the question: "To

what extent do you feel the things you do in your life are worthwhile?" Motorcycling again received the most amount of 'strong positive' responses, ranking higher than Camping and Fishing. Of all the hobbies listed, Cycling received the lowest amount of 'strong positive' results in this question.

Motorcycling also ranked highly in the survey's 'Wellbeing Index' which

showed motorcycling as having the largest number of responses in the 'strong positive' category.

The survey also showed that 69% of people said that their outdoor hobby makes them happy, compared to 31% indoor.

Those without any hobbies consistently ranked lower in the survey results than any other hobby listed. So if you don't have a hobby, the answer is simple: get a bike!
