For the past few weeks, my

beloved Sue and I have been watching a pair of Bulbuls nesting in a Royal Palm outside our bedroom window. They built a rather elegant nest, delicate yet sturdy enough to withstand the vagaries of the weather and we marveled at how quickly the chicks arrived. The parents worked hard to keep the hungry brood fed and we worried about them on those tempestuous nights when the wind howled and the world trembled. But it wasn’t the wind that we should have been concerned about.

Shortly before the chicks were due to leave the nest, there was a commotion on the deck below the tree and we feared the worst. Our German Shepherds were on high alert and venting their outrage at what was unfolding, but they were powerless to prevent the carnage above them. A juvenile vervet monkey was tearing the chicks apart and dropping them lifeless and bloody onto the floor below. Sue and I were speechless at the wanton destruction and the offending monkey seemed to take great delight in ripping the nest apart while the distraught parents screeched their distress.

Just a few weeks earlier I had received a communication from a

reader, a retired game ranger and active birder, who had expressed deep concern over the disappearance of birds from gardens in Umhlanga and the Hawaan Forest. His contention is that in the absence of natural predators, monkey populations have burgeoned, wreaking havoc on the breeding patterns of birdlife in their ever increasing territories.

There are apparently no easy solutions. It’s a problem that we have created. Nature is out of balance and we have the uncomfortable responsibility of trying to manage these things. I have often wondered how monkey populations are controlled in the absence of predators.

Steve Smit and Carol Booth run an Animal Rights Africa project called Monkey Helpline that offers another perspective. Steve was previously an

intelligence agent for national security and later an estate agent. Carol was a teacher¬. Both have quit their day jobs and now work to address the plight of monkeys in our region.

Persecuted, harassed and threatened, vervet monkeys are the most misunderstood and mistreated animals in KwaZulu-Natal, they say.

There are massive misconceptions

about monkeys, which lead to irritation and anger and because of this only one out of four monkeys that are born actually make it to adulthood, says Booth.

“People say that monkeys are breeding out of control and that their populations are increasing because their so-called natural predators have been eradicated. It’s simply not true. People have introduced power lines, vehicles, pellet guns and firearms, vicious dogs, poison, snares, traps and razor wire that are nonselective and far more lethal. We rescue an average of three monkeys every two days.

No population can sustain such high losses. Urban monkeys could be extinct by the time our children reach adulthood. Almost all the troops that we monitor are slowly decreasing in size from one year to the next.”

Despite the perceptions people have of monkeys invading our gardens, we in fact have invaded their territory.

So, what’s the solution? Smit lambastes those responsible for the torment that monkeys face, from homeowners to conservation authorities, farmers and even bird lovers and school children with

pellet guns. They are in the minority, but their impact on monkeys is enormous.

If you want more information on how to deal with problem monkeys in a humane and effective manner visit www.animalrightsafrica.org and look up Monkey Helpline under “projects”.

Ballito Roadworks Accelerated.

Following an emergency meeting last week where

contractors, municipal officials, ward councilors, media and business owners came together to address the traffic congestion being experienced in Ballito due to roadworks, we are delighted to see that good progress is now being made by working at night. Due to unforeseen delays, it was anticipated that the first phase of the roadworks to create better traffic flow in Ballito would only be concluded by February 2015 as work is scheduled to stop for the holidays on December 12th. It was our suggestion that operations be accelerated, working at night to use the time available before shutdown to get as far ahead as possible to minimize congestion over the festive season. We are overjoyed to see that this suggestion has yielded results and that due to the extra shift working at night, the prognosis for local traffic going forward into the festive season is now much improved. This is a great example of how when people come together over a common problem, solutions can be found – thanks, guys!

When Martin Locke and I decided to start a

radio station in Ballito over ten years ago, it was nothing more than a bit of fun. We had both been on the Radio 5 (5FM) team for several years and had independently gravitated to Ballito where we were reunited over a bottle or two of singing dancing drinking wine one night

and the proposition was struck. What followed later was an

ad hoc temporary radio station broadcasting from Ballito on a short term license to cover the summer festival of 2002/3 – and Martin was busy with other stuff so he wasn’t involved, but many others were and we had a blast. We played a mix of hits past and present and interspersed it with local info, interviews and news and people loved it!

But we couldn’t promote it much then – we didn’t

have a strong media partner like Life & Style behind us and it was over before it began. But the idea remained with me and now, with

the Ballito Lifestyle centre as a broadcast base and Life & Style as a media partner, Radio Life & Style 88.0FM is about to change the media mix in the greater Ballito region forever. We will be playing a similar mix of the greatest songs of your life – the hits of today and yesterday…all the best ones…plus local info, news and views from interesting people. Our on air team will be announced closer to switch on which is scheduled for December 10th 2014.

While the FM signal strength will be limited, we will also be broadcasting digitally to every mobile device, computer platform and decoder currently available in the market. This will allow us to be heard in shopping centres, homes, offices, waiting rooms, showrooms, forecourts and anywhere where people gather. Working with digital service provider partners we will be promoting free

WIFI zones on the beaches in Ballito and Umhlanga that will carry our radio stream free to mobile phones so you can stay up to date and in touch with where the action is.

So, WheRe WILL We Be BRoAdcASTIng FRoM?

The Ballito Lifestyle centre will be where the Radio Life & Style broadcast studio will be located. The studio itself has been designed by detail Architect’s Mabette Vermaak who has made a study of container buildings found in the trendiest spots on the planet and she has custom designed what will be Ballito’s first. detail Architects is powered by Mabette Vermaak and Joanne hain, two of the most creative architects in their field. Mabette is currently a consulting architect on the Zimbali, Simbithi and Prince’s Grant architectural review committees and has specialised in estate residential architecture for the past eleven years. She recently completed the interior and architectural renovation of Prince’s Grant Estate Umdoni Hotel suites and Main Lodge and she’s hot property on the design scene here. Essentially she designs beautiful spaces and their interiors so we are delighted that she agreed to take on this challenge. Based on two shipping containers, cleverly reworked to create a really exciting purpose-built radio studio, the building will be arriving partly complete from the manufacturers in Gauteng shortly and will be located close to the escalators from the undercover parking area on a very busy central walkway. Because much of the studio is glass, you

Soon Everybody Will Be Listening

will be able to watch the presenters in action and the live interviews with celebrities as they happen. Not only will the station sound good, it will be visually interesting too and we hope you’ll come and visit us at the Lifestyle Centre soon.

Forthcoming features, interviews and interesting radio happenings will be carried in print editions of Life & Style to promote them and they will be available after the live broadcast at podcasts to listen to at your leisure should you miss anything.

We aim to host speciality shows at night which will also be heavily promoted through our print publications and of course on air and online too.

Our new website www.lifeandstyle.fm will not only carry the live radio stream but also the latest editions of our print titles, social media, continuous updates of what’s happening of interest in the region as well as civil information of importance to the region.

With attractively priced advertising packages available to take advantage of the launch period and the peak holiday season, Radio Life & Style 88.0FM in conjunction with our print publications and digital presence is going to give you the most exciting marketing platform ever to hit the region.

hello, Amazon: Shopping Giant Reveals Smart Speaker than Can Learn Its Owners Voice - And

Act as a Personal Assistant As well As Play Music They Ask for...

AMAzon has launched a new $200 smart speaker that can listen to its owner and follow

their commands.Called Echo, the cylinder can do

everything from play music to read out your diary and weather for the day.

The firm launched the speaker with a single tweet, and users can request an invite to buy one.The 9-inch tall cylinder device acts as an artificially intelligent assistant and a high-end speaker.

As well as taking commands such as 'play music by Bruno Mars' or 'add gelato to my shopping list', Amazon said the device accesses the internet to answer questions such as

'when is Thanksgiving?' and 'what is the weather forecast?'

Amazon said the speaker, which runs on Amazon Web Services, continually learns a user's speech patterns and preferences.

Users start the speaker up saying the wake up word, 'Alexa'. It is available on an invitation-only basis in coming weeks.

Amazon has had an unusually busy year, developing a mobile phone, video productions and grocery deliveries.

Last month, the company forecast sales for the crucial holiday quarter that disappointed Wall Street and investors who are eager to see Amazon curtail its ambitions and start delivering sustainable profits.

As well as taking commands such as 'play music by Bruno Mars' or 'add gelato to my shopping list', Amazon said the device accesses the internet to answer questions such as 'when is Thanksgiving?' and 'what is the weather

RecenTLy, I had the privilege of attending the World Leadership Summit. My

attention was drawn to two things. Firstly, each speaker had silver hair and secondly, faith most certainly makes the world a better place.

The quality of the speakers was invigorating, inspirational and motivating. Like all motivational talks and speeches, the challenge is to take this inspiration and transfer it to the workplace. As we listened to each speaker, we related their thoughts to our situation within the school environment and there is just so much encouragement from the words of wisdom.

One crucial aspect is that we spend a tremendous amount of time on negativity, whereas we should be spending the majority of our time on things and issues that are good and positive.

I often use the analogy of ‘we spend 90% of our time on 10 %

of bad things and 10% of our time on 90% of the good things.’ There are those times when we are rewarded. Our recent Matric Valedictory and Sport & Culture Awards are proof of this and it is always an honour to celebrate our students’ successes with them.

Our philosophy at Ashton is steeped in the tradition of evolving our students who leave our school, as people of quality and character that are unique individuals who will embrace their future, who are determined, who have direction towards achieving their goals, who in turn leave a legacy.

One of the Guest speakers, Wilfred de Jesus spoke about his book ‘In the gap’ and creating hope where challenges seem surmountable. For some time now, we have had parents offering to fill some of our gaps and it is with great pleasure that we announce our Ashton Parents Who Care forum, where we plan to come together to make a difference in our community. Once this forum has been established, we will be opening it up to the general public. (Watch

this space).We are also

extremely proud to announce that our students have launched an Anti-Drug Committee that will drive a zero-tolerance campaign throughout the school. To indicate just how serious our school is about this drive, our 2014/2015 Prefect Body agreed to be tested, and by doing so, have set the example for each and every student. Our students have taken ownership! The challenge is to keep it sustainable and it is a challenge we look forward to.

In closing, it is an important time for all students and we especially wish our Matric and Cambridge Students all the best for their finals.

HISToRy

repeats itself, or does it? When it comes to Retirement, there is little doubt that this institution runs the risk of being given its own proverbial gold watch and sent into pasture – for good.

Globally the idea of working 9-5 in your productive years and ‘retiring’ to relax and ’enjoy’ a peaceful retirement is being seriously questioned and with good reason. Leading the charge on this regime is none other than the much talked about “baby boomer”. This generation, born post World War II, grew up in a world of hope and endless opportunity. After all, they put a man on the moon – if they could achieve that, they could achieve anything – the sky was no longer the limit and with the aid of the industrial revolution, there was increased wealth being

spread to back this insatiable ambition.

From the day you stepped into your first job, you were told to start saving towards this thing called retirement. The idea was to accumulate as much as possible in your ‘productive, years so that you could retire ‘comfortably’.

Sometimes the best way to understand something is to explore where it came from and for what reasons.

The history of retirement is an interesting one and one that dates back as far as 1883. It was none other than chancellor otto Von Bismarck of Germany that was merited as the ‘inventor’ of retirement. You see, Germany had a problem where the Marxists were threatening to take control of Europe and so, to help his countrymen resist their blandishments, Bismarck announced that he would pay a pension to any nonworking German over age 65. Of

course, politically this was applauded and economically there seemed to be no threat - hardly anyone lived to be 65 at the time. And so the notion of people being paid by the government for growing old was driven more by politics than economics. What is more surprising is that this seems, arbitrarily, where the million dollar number 65 became the supposed all important age.

Of course, it took another half a century before this movement took hold. In part because very few reached 65 and also there was little need. As the industrial revolution put more money in the hands of ordinary citizens and medical advancements increased the countries longevity, so too this retirement concept became more available. however, it was only when the great depression hit the US that retirement was to take centre stage.

With so many out of work and unable to provide, the Government needed a drastic move

to address this situation. And so, those 60 and older were ‘forced’ into retirement to allow for the younger workers to once again be employed. Of course, to avoid this being a gross injustice to the aged, compensation was given to them equal to an average middle income salary. This was done to not only avoid social unrest (and potentially crime) from the younger men trying to put food on their family’s table, but also allow for accelerated production as these younger men could work the factory lines a lot quicker than their aged counterparts.

Fast forward to the

new millennium and the present, many are working past retirement age. Some out of desire but most out of necessity. Regardless of which camp you fall, the bottom line is that saving for and investing into your retirement years is no longer a straight aggregation of accumulation to a point (retirement) and slowly drawing down thereafter. The nuances of today’s investor requires a sound plan and investment strategy to navigate through these transition periods towards and into the golden years.

ARe you looking for creative ways to secure more clients? With the competition everywhere

these days, growing a business can be tough. This said, you may not be taking full advantage of all the ways in which you can promote your products / services. This article outlines how publishing high quality content can build your credibility and ultimately get you more clients.

Most business owners think that publishing online content is not effective enough or even beneficial to their business. It is this type of thinking that creates an opportunity.

Since most do not consider it, the few who actually do publish, benefit greatly. That means that if you take

action today, you can quite easily establish a competitive edge in business.

Herewith five convincing reasons to begin publishing high quality content that adds value, builds credibility and may even pull many of your campaigns together: 1) Lead the fieLd

When you produce good online content, more prospects visit your website. They stay online for longer and they form a picture of the type of business you operate, even before doing business with you. When your competitors visit your website and read your content, most of them won't have the energy to muscle in on your territory because it just seems like too much work. Yes, there is work to do, but it's worth it in so many ways as you will see.2) Become more visiBLe

With Google making it ever more challenging to get noticed,

publishing quality content gives your website more opportunity to achieve a higher search engine optimization

(SEO) ranking. The more you publish, the bigger your website will be and the more comprehensive the body of knowledge will become that represents your business. 3) Be the “go-to”

professionaL in your target market

By publishing top quality content and aligning it to a creative marketing campaign, your messages

will start to pop up different places. The more fine-tuned a prospect’s search is and the more specific the content is that you have written about, the less competition there will be. The result, when prospects no longer want an average business with ordinary offers, your publications will help them find your “go to” professional business with unique solutions.4) highLight your expertise

This point is slightly related to the previous one... but there's a difference. Publishing content goes way beyond gaining added visibility. It also gives you the opportunity to really highlight your expertise. Your reputation will begin to precede you in your market place. You can get even more value out of your content by publishing it on different communication platforms like social media, blog posts, articles for your newsletter, printed media etc.

Read my website article (on the publications page) entitled: “How to build leverage into your writing

Small Business Coach – www.kissyourbusiness.com SEAN DERCKSEN

the Benefits of puBLishing onLine content

skills,” for more value-adding information on this subject.5) BuiLd a portfoLio

Talking about impressing prospects... one more benefit of publishing numerous articles is that it will create a highly effective portfolio. So, you and your business can benefit greatly by publishing material online. It is a lot of work, but attaching your name to value-adding, informative content that promotes the products or services you offer is well worth the time and effort you put in over the lifespan of your business.

“What drives me is the painting process, the molding and the manipulating”, Digby says. “Creating something from nothing and probably the smell of turps and oil!”

Particularly drawn to the play of light, colour and texture, she says: “I paint for the moment, letting my brushes and palette do the work. When a painting is going well, it takes me off to another place, I feel on such a high. I work in a frenzy – the feeling is awesome!” - The Witness

SUMMeR is upon us and the delights of patio wining and dining, whether a good old fashioned braai or fresh

oysters followed by curried prawns, the accent is on patio entertainment. how does your patio look? Fresh and sparkling with well placed pots and containers, filled with leafy delights and

splashes of colour or do your plants have that hungry, undernourished, nobody cares look about them? Where to begin, with only six weeks before Christmas arrives?

Decide which plants can be resuscitated and which should be put

in the bin. Don’t be tempted to replant tatty plants into your garden space unless you know exactly what the end result will be. Any of the Ficus family can cause enormous harm to plumbing and water ways just a few years down the line. Determine which areas of your outdoor living space are in full or half day sun and which are in total shade. This is all important information to take along to the Nursery when you need advice. Don’t be tempted to use your garden soil in pots as it just might contain a virus or fungal disease that will be harmful to container plants. Potting soil is for pots. This is specially formulated to allow reasonable drainage so that your plants don’t lie with `wet’ feet and is sterile and weed free.

Watering is always a difficult question to answer. How much? How often? If your plants are standing on soil or lawn, you can allow the water to run through the pot but if your containers are standing on drip trays of tiled or hard surfaces, overwatering must be avoided because, if there is no drainage, the water level will build up in the container, turning the soil sour and the roots sitting is unwanted moisture. In this situation, you should water small amounts of water, more frequently, ensuring that the water added to the soil will be utilised

by the plant without any run-off. Perhaps half a cup a day or a cup every second day. Your plants will soon let you know if they are not happy.

No container plants (or any other plants for that matter), will survive without nutrients. I must answer this question 50 or more times a week and the answer is always the same. Feed your plants! They are living organisms and need water,

light and food! There are so many plants available

for container planting; trees and palms; beautiful perennials such as Anthuriums; Dipladenias (Mandevillas); Herbs and veggies; seedlings in every possible colour. Make this Festive season one to remember and your outdoor areas a place where you will find peace and relaxation, surrounded with the beauties of Nature and the humming of insects, making your home their home too. Then you can say `I

have arrived!’

As the summer holiday season approaches thoughts turn to entertaining and maximizing the space available. Weather permitting, entertaining outdoors is always fun if you are properly equipped and prepared for it. Making the most of your outdoor living space adds value to

your home and richness to your life. It’s such a good idea, and here are some options worth investigating.

o u T d o o R L I v I n g o n A B u d g E T.Transform a deck or

patio into the ultimate outdoor space for entertaining

your family or friends. Multi-purpose outdoor rooms are becoming increasingly popular as homeowners realise the potential of utilising outdoor areas to increase living spaces.

If you like to entertain, plan for plenty of seating. If you

have an active family, think about how the kids might utilise the space. Do you love outdoor cooking and braaing? Think counter space, storage and cookware.

1. If you don't already have a deck in place, or a patio slab, think about the options for flooring your entertainment area. A concrete slab is the most affordable and is virtually

maintenance-free, as is composite decking.

2. Canvas or outdoor fabric awnings stretch from the roof to countertop height to provide shade from the hot sun.

3. Rather than going to the expense of installing full-on plumbing for an outdoor entertainment area, a stainless steel basin drains into a bucket

under the countertop. The water is then used for watering plants and lawn. An outdoor sink is a cinch to install if you simply set up the tap to draw water via a hose pipe connection.

4. Make your own SA pine garden chairs - stain and seal or paint them in your choice of colour. Add comfort with medium density foam

Variation: This Stroganoff recipe is fantastic with Venison fillets. Use Kudu, Nyala, Impala or Springbuck. Marinade the fillets for 24 hours in a mixture of 500ml Buttermilk, 3 cloves of crushed garlic and 25ml (11/2 tablespoons) crushed green peppercorns. Slice the fillets thinly before proceeding as for the Beef Stroganoff Use Black mushrooms instead. The wine can be replaced by 125ml water for an alcohol free dish. I use a wok to cook this dish.

ingredients25ml (11/2 tablespoons) butter25ml (11/2 Tablespoons) oil500g -750g Beef Fillet or Sirloin, sliced into thin strips250g button mushrooms, thinly sliced60g (1/4 cup) salted butter, extra1 onion, thinly sliced15ml (1 tablespoon) flour15ml (1 tablespoon) Dijon mustard2,5ml (½ teaspoon) smoked Spanish paprika 125ml dry white wine or water250ml thick sour creamSalt and freshly grated black pepper Chopped Parsley to garnish (optional)

method:Heat butter

and oil in a large skillet or heavy bottomed saucepan over a medium heat/high heat or in a Wok. Sauté the beef strips quickly until just cooked, about three to five minutes, do not overcook the beef. Add the mushrooms and sauté briefly until cooked. Remove from the saucepan and set aside.

Melt the extra butter slowly in the saucepan without letting it separate. Sauté the onions gently until caramelised, about 5 minutes. Stir in the flour, mustard and smoked paprika. Cook for a minute to make a thick paste. Slowly whisk in the wine and cream a little at a time until fully incorporated. Simmer gently, stirring continuously for a few minutes or until the sauce has thickened considerably. Season to taste. Return the meat and mushrooms to the saucepan, heat through and serve at once with Ribbon Noodles. Sprinkle chopped fresh parsley over the top.

tip: Use only the very best chocolate with a high cocoa content. The Vodka carries the flavour well and using a superior chocolate brand will prevent the Liqueur from tasting artificial or like melted Easter Eggs! You may use Milk chocolate if desired. The mixture will thicken upon standing. Do not store this liqueur in the fridge.

Variations: In Russia it is possible to purchase Chilli infused Vodka off the shelf. But for a delicious variation, add 2 to 4 whole dried dark red chillies to the Chocolate vodka. Leave to stand for at least 12 hours before serving.

Alternatively, add 30ml (2 Tablespoons) Orange Liqueur to the vodka before adding the chocolate. Shake well.

method: Grate the chocolate finely. Fill

the sink with boiling water as deep as the level of the vodka in the bottle. Immerse the bottle in the hot water for a few minutes to warm the alcohol. Insert a plastic funnel into the neck of the bottle. Spoon the grated chocolate into the bottle, remove the funnel, cover the bottle with the bottle top and shake vigorously until the chocolate has dissolved. Repeat the process until the vodka cannot absorb any more chocolate. Store at room temperature. Shake well before serving. Use as a topping for dessert or as a drink served with Ice. Mixture thickens upon standing.

Makes one large bottle.

The Culinary Adventures of a

TRAVELLING COOK

Natasha Barnes

Vodka is the lifeblood of russia. They say the cheaper brands are so strong, one drink can blind you. Drinking seems to be a national past time and it was not uncommon to see old ladies at breakfast drinking Vodka from juice glasses. My travelling companion of course, loved the idea.

i travelled from st petersburg to beijing by train. it took three weeks with stops. No one spoke any English so were left largely to our own devices. The last Carriage was the opulent dining car offering an elaborate Menu in Russian, cooked up by a bored chef who made the Bar his head quarters. Stroganoff seemed like a familiar option. We soon fell into a regular pattern, Cheese and Salami for breakfast, large quantities of Bloody Mary the rest of the day and a simple Stroganoff for dinner. If you wanted rice or noodles you have to order it extra. There is no such thing as a free lunch in Russia.

The rediscovery of an aerogram from Sri Lanka with a carefully inscribed recipe

is what led to The culinary Adventures of a Travelling cook, a collection of

uncomplicated recipes – both gourmet and everyday.

Written by cook and artist Natasha Barnes from her numerous trips locally and abroad, this book shares many humorous accounts of her travels across the globe. Her experiences

are relived through the foods she encountered and enjoyed in countries as diverse as the USA, Vietnam, Argentina, Ethiopia and

Burma.

Natasha Barnes holds a Cordon Bleu Grande Diplome from the prestigious

Silwood School of Cookery in Cape Town and has a National Qualification in Training

and Development from the hospitality industry. Experienced as a cookery editor and

accomplished food stylist for Your Family magazine, she also opened two cookery schools at maximum-security prisons in

KwaZulu-Natal. In addition, Natasha is an acclaimed international artist, travelling and exhibiting her paintings worldwide. This is

her first book.

You are cordially invited to attend the Launch of the culinary Adventures of a Travelling Cook at Bargain Books in the Ballito Lifestyle Centre on Friday, 14 November, for drinks and a book signing.

IT’S fast becoming the place to meet in Ballito. The Ballito village at the edge of the sea has been making a comeback after several years of

economic decline in the wake of the storm damage in 2007. With the beach in close proximity, it makes sense that a coastal themed restaurant would be a popular choice. The Beach hut is a real gem – a delightfully fresh and informal setting just a stone’s throw from the beach with easy access and plenty of parking on Library Lane. This is at the heart of the Ballito revival and it’s where the best people gather for breakfasts, lunches, coffee breaks and, of late, relaxed dinners too. The food is honest, fresh and consummately prepared by internationally renowned chef and owner, Michael Ovens under the watchful eye of his wife, Joanna.

Michael has seventeen years of experience in acclaimed restaurants across the globe and has settled now to raise a family on the North Coast. This is a real win for Ballito, as so many have already discovered.

Michael and Joanna are uncompromising when it comes to quality in their restaurant – quality ingredients means taste and flavour…and delighted customers. They use the best suppliers and are happy to share that info with you.

SUndAy 9th november saw surfers of all ages take to the water at Umhlanga’s Main Beach for the Wave

Wizards Surf club event. This was the second competition of a three part series that ends with the Lizzard Summer Surf Event which kicks off the Annual Umhlanga Summer Festival 2014.

Perfect weather and highly contestable waves were the order of the day. Starting off with slightly messy 2-3 ft. waves but improving to 3-4 ft. with the Umhlanga bowl offering some fun left wave options. Quintin Jones (commonly known as QJ) pulled out all the stops to win the Masters 35+ division. Quintin is renowned for being South Africa’s leading surfing coach and has some of the top surfers in this country in his stable. He led by example at the event when he beat multiple SA Champ Carl Roux and other top surfers Evan Jenkins, Mike Frew and Mark Hansel.

Club Chairman and Hurricane Brand Manager Jestyn Viljoen was thrilled with the outcome ‘Our club is all about encouraging the really small kids to experience competitions for the first time. We have surfers as young as 6 years old taking part and their Dads also surfing in the Masters divisions. Today was a perfect day for all the surfers and their families’.

WhILe out shopping one day I could not help noticing a young woman

who had crossed my path and I was drawn to the intricate and lively way in which her hair had been coloured.

Her stylist needed applause for the obvious skill and effort exercised in the execution of this hairstyle which had a base or background colour of bright yet intense copper accented with a symphony of golden toned high and low lights. An obviously fresh wash and blow dry only served to pay homage to an outstanding haircut that fell seamlessly around her shoulders .

Sad to say, the look stopped there! Her hair was over-shadowed by

her attire which consisted of a khaki/beige sweat suit, no make-up and a pair of slip-slops.

The 'total look' is important and the lack thereof is the reason for placing a spotlight on this scenario.

Disconnected looks are extremely hard to assemble so rather leave

them to an expert and opt for the safer coherent option when putting an outfit together.

As it was a Sunday this individual probably meant to come across in a casual manner however her khaki/beige track suit would have worked better with a muted hair colour, cap, head band and pony-tail. Similarly with a brighter toned sweat suit, her dramatically coloured hair would have worked in closer harmony with her dramatically coloured hair.

Another situation worth avoiding in the name of visual harmony is the long flowy dress and short classic haircut combination as these two are in direct contrast with one another. Again the work of an accomplished stylist with a deft hand and good eye may have the insight to style such a combination adequately. Rather opt for a fitted classic dress when sporting a short neat cut and you will ease into a harmonious connection.

Happy styling!
