Specific Media Elements To Attract My Specific Audience

Stakeout• When investigating an individual

or criminal activity, it is conventional for the police to issue ‘stakeouts’

• Examples of such can be seen in the opening sequence for Bad Boys 2, where Martin Lawrence and Will Smith are both on an undercover stakeout on the pier

• The ideal audience who watch action movies associate what happens on the screen with what could actually happen in real life. Here, we have a stakeout that ends up going wrong.

Secret Meeting• To avoid detection, criminal activity

usually takes place in either somewhere secret or somewhere unexpected.

• An example of this being represented in a movie would be Bad Boys 2, where the KKK hold their meeting on a pier in the middle of the night. At the same time, drugs are being smuggled onto the pier. Not really something you want to advertise about…

• This representation of criminal activity mirrors activity which does happen in the real world, which would appeal to an audience orientated around more realistic action than just random explosions and acts of violence.

Guns and Shooting• Traditionally, the weapon of choice

for the modern age is the firearm. It’s power and precision make it an ideal weapon for the police and for criminals…

• Guns are most definitely a convention of action films. It’s power to kill at a range allows you to not need to go in close for the kill, or to wound someone enough to take them into custardy…

• This appeals to a stereotypical action-film audience member because it’s presence can change the pace of the film entirely. A casual, slow paced conversation can be transformed into a fast paced shootout between both people.

Chase• Fight or Fly. A natural instinct in every

animal, even humans. So when criminals wish to avoid going to jail, their first thought is to flee the scene as fast as possible.

• Generally, in every fight scene there will most likely be one person who realises they’re losing, and will decide to flee. When this happens, the heroic police give chase, and we have a display of athletic ability as one races the other. An example of this in a film is Hot Fuzz, where Simon Pegg chases after a shoplifter from his local Somerfield.

• Conventionally, this is used to speed up the pace within an action film, and is not uncommon to see in films.
