31st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Theme: A Priestly Life

Christians expect from their priests and Bishops the service of the ministerial priesthood,

which consists of both sacramental ministration and teaching of the Gospel. If citizens

rightly expect from the politicians that they practice what they claim to stand for, all the

more do Christians expect the same from their leaders, priests, and bishops. Priests

should not preach their own words, but the word of God. They should use their task as

ministry, i.e., service to God’s people.

Our three readings this Sunday have some sober things to say to those who are ordained

to preach the gospel and teach truth that sets free to love God and neighbor. There is no

mention of being a prince or a pal. Rather, we are reminded of what is expected of one

called to be God’s man for the community of faith. In an age when we have a decrease

in vocations and in priests’ work satisfaction (while at the same the laity are more desir-

ous of their priests), it behooves us to listen to our readings. In other words, contrary to

what the laity are saying, priests seem to doubt their worth and work (it has always been

hard for us priests to listen).

Our first reading from Malachi (a name which means “my message”) was written after

the return from Babylon (around 460 B. C). Public worship and fidelity to the covenant

left much to be desired. So, did the priests whose responsibility it was to call the com-

munity to celebrate what God had done and was doing. The words of the Lord leave no

room for misunderstanding: “You have turned aside from the way, and have caused

many to falter by your instruction; You have made void the covenant of Levi, says the

Lord of hosts.” The leaders have betrayed their sacred trust. The faith is breached.

Tema: Una vida sacerdotal

Los Cristianos esperan de sus sacerdotes y Obispos el servicio del sacerdocio ministe-

rial, que consiste tanto en la ministración sacramental como en la enseñanza del Evange-

lio. Si los ciudadanos con razón esperan de los políticos que practiquen lo que dicen

defender, tanto más los cristianos esperan lo mismo de sus líderes, sacerdotes y obispos.

Los sacerdotes no deben predicar sus propias palabras, sino la palabra de Dios. Deben

usar su tarea como ministerio, es decir, servicio al pueblo de Dios.

Nuestras tres lecturas este domingo tienen algunas cosas sobrias para decir a aquellos

que son ordenados para predicar el evangelio y enseñar la verdad que establece la liber-

tad de amar a Dios y al prójimo. No hay mención de ser un príncipe o un amigo. Más

bien, se nos recuerda lo que se espera de alguien llamado a ser el hombre de Dios para la

comunidad de fe. En una época en la que tenemos una disminución en las vocaciones y

en la satisfacción del trabajo de los sacerdotes (mientras que al mismo tiempo los laicos

están más deseosos de sus sacerdotes), nos corresponde escuchar nuestras lecturas. En

otras palabras, contrariamente a lo que dicen los laicos, los sacerdotes parecen dudar de

su valor y trabajo (siempre nos ha resultado difícil escucharlo).

Nuestra primera lectura de Malaquías (un nombre que significa "mi mensaje") fue escri-

ta después del regreso de Babilonia (alrededor de 460 AC). El culto público y la fideli-

dad al pacto dejaron mucho que desear. Entonces, los sacerdotes cuya responsabilidad

era llamar a la comunidad para celebrar lo que Dios había hecho y estaba haciendo. Las

Jesús nunca fue alguien para comprometer su mensaje. Los es-

cribas y fariseos, los líderes intelectuales y religiosos, hablaban

un buen juego pero rara vez conectaban sus vidas con sus pala-

bras. "Sus palabras son audaces y sus obras son pocas". E inclu-

so las buenas obras que hicieron fueron hechas con miras a la

gloria propia. Dirigieron a otros a adorar a los líderes y no al

Dios que dirige por el servicio y el amor desinteresado.

Los sabios e inteligentes fueron atrapados en el juego mortal de

la inflación del ego. Agarraron por "títulos, lugares de honor y

recostados en la mesa para ser servidos". Jesús dejó en claro que

ser un líder significa que uno debe servir al resto. Los que se

exaltan a sí mismos son humildes, mientras que aquel que prac-

tica el liderazgo siervo será exaltado por Dios.

San Pablo, el buen pastor, sabía las "cosas correctas" para aque-

llos a quienes se les había confiado el liderazgo de la comuni-

dad. No es suficiente simplemente predicar la palabra de Dios,

se requiere más. El buen pastor quiere compartir "no solo las

nuevas de Dios" sino su mismo ser. Siempre existe la necesidad

de una participación personal en la vida de la comunidad. ¿No

es todo esto un retorno al sacerdote pal? No, porque la vida sa-

cerdotal se presenta como una ofrenda para la alabanza de Dios,

no como un esfuerzo para ganar amigos e influenciar a las per-

sonas. El enfoque es siempre Cristo.

El enfoque de este domingo ha sido el liderazgo sacerdotal a

través de la predicación, la enseñanza y el servicio. Sin embar-

go, esto no significa que los laicos puedan simplemente sentarse

y ser atendidos. Nuestra parroquia OLGC debe ser una comuni-

dad de fe que ora y espera liderazgo después del corazón de

Dios y el ejemplo de Jesús. Obtenemos los tipos de líderes que

merecemos. La calidad de la vida y el liderazgo sacerdotal es

demasiado importante como para dejarla en manos de unos po-

cos elegidos. Todos nosotros tenemos un papel para jugar. To-

dos nosotros necesitamos prestar nuestras oraciones y apoyo a

aquellos a quienes se les ha confiado la palabra de vida de Dios.

Seamos más cuidadosos en cómo juzgamos y criticamos a nues-

tros sacerdotes, no fingimos, no jugamos. Verdad, honestidad,

sinceridad: esto es lo que Jesús nos pide. Así es como Él era, y

Él nos llama a ser lo mismo.

11 DE NOVIEMBRE DÍA DEL VETERANO/

DÍA DEL ARMISTICIO Recordamos y oramos por todos los que han servido y

están actualmente sirviendo en las Fuerzas Armadas. Re-

cordamos en particular a aquellos que han muerto al servi-

cio de nuestro país. También recordamos los miembros de

familias que lloran los soldados que han muerto en la gue-

rra o que viven con la preocupación por sus familiares que

están sirviendo fuera del país. También oramos por la paz.

En observación a este día celebraremos la Misa parro-

quial a las 9:00 AM el Viernes 10 de Noviembre. Las

oficinas de la parroquia y de la escuela también es-

tarán cerradas.

Jesus was never one to compromise his message. The

scribes and Pharisees, the intellectual and religious lead-

ers, talked a good game but seldom connected their lives

with their words. “Their words are bold and their deeds

are few.” And even the good deeds they did were done

with an eye to self-glory. They led others to worship the

leaders and not the God who leads by service and selfless

love.

The learned and clever were caught in deadly game of

ego-inflation. They grasped for “titles, places of honor,

and reclining at the table so as to be served.” Jesus made

it clear that to be a leader means one must serve the rest.

The self-exalted are humbled, while the one who prac-

tices servant leadership shall be exalted by God.

St. Paul, the good pastor, knew the “right stuff” For those

entrusted with community leadership. It is not enough to

merely preach the word of God, more is required. The

good pastor wants to share “not only God’s tidings” but

his very self. There is always the need for personal in-

volvement with the life of the community. Isn’t all this a

return to the pal priest? No Because the priestly life is

presented as an offering for the praise of God, not as ef-

fort to win friends and influence people. The focus is al-

ways Christ.

The focus this Sunday has been on priestly leadership

through preaching, teaching and service. However, this

does not mean that the laity can just sit back and be

served. Our parish OLGC must be a community of faith

which prays and expects leadership after God’s heart and

Jesus’ example. We get the kinds of leaders we deserve.

The quality of priestly life and leadership is too important

to be left to a select few. All of us have a part to play. All

of us need to lend our prayers and support to those en-

trusted with God’s word of life. Let us be more careful

how we judge and criticize our priests, not pretending,

not playing games. Truth, honesty, sincerity: this is what

Jesus ask of us. This is how He was, and He calls us to be

the same.

NOVEMBER 11: VETERANS’ DAY/

ARMISTICE DAY We remember and pray for all who have served and

are currently serving in the Armed Forces. We re-

member in particular those who have died in the

service of our country. We also remember family

members who mourn soldiers who have died in war

or those who live with the worries and concerns for

relatives who are serving overseas. We pray, too, for

peace.

In observance to the holiday we will celebrate the

parish Mass at 9:00 AM on Friday, November

10. The parish and school offices will be closed as

well.
