Dear Parishioners,

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”

The mandate of the Risen Lord is as criti-cal today as it was to those fi rst disciples. We are called to be an evangelizing community. The Lord invites us to call others to faith by what we say and do. The ministries of our parish are powerful ways that we can live out our faith. What a dif-ference our lived-out faith can make.

Communicating the Good News is a chal-lenge. The technology at our fi ngertips is both redemptive and overwhelming. Harnessing this potential power to call others to Christ is critical. We see every day the power for good or bad, a tweet, a text message, an image on Instagram can have. Pope Francis has almost 20 mil-lion followers on Twitter. More and more parishioners download the bulletin rather than take a hard copy home. Our Friday email blast goes to hundreds of people. Through Facebook and our website, people all over the world get an impres-sion of what is happening at OLPH.

We are blessed to have many resources to help spread the Good News. I am grateful for the hard work and creative efforts of our Director of Communications, Melissa Conroy. Maintaining a presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the web-site reach people in ways that are remark-able. There was a time when a family con-sidering a neighborhood would visit the church and attend a service. Nowadays, potential parishioners check out your website, look for reviews from Yelp and Google, or use a smartphone app. Melissa has established a Communications Advisory Team, made up of parishioners, to review and to explore enhancing our use of communications platforms.

Evangelization is also enhanced by the celebration of the Eucharist. Our music ministry, under the direction of Russell Stern, elevates our celebrations by reaching into the treasury of the musical heritage of our Catholic tradition. Margie André serves as our Liturgical Coordinator and makes every effort to include as many people as possible in the liturgical ministries we need to serve such a large congregation.

Preaching is vital to the evangelization effort. Like anything, people have a wide spectrum of expectations when it comes to the preaching. From the preacher’s point of view, it is a never-ending chal-lenge to connect the Word with real issues that help connect our experiences with the proclamation of God’s Word. We are blessed to have several voices and ap-proaches to this very privileged responsi-bility. Most weekends, the preacher faces congregations of almost 800 congre-gants. I am grateful for the hard work and preparation our preachers bring to their ministry.

Evangelization is enhanced in the ways we welcome strangers, attend to the needs of people struggling, and in the ways we form our children and our adult community.

This weekend’s Feast of The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity is all about relation-ships. Just as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit live in a dynamic relationship, so do we with one another and with Our God.

Last weekend’s celebration of Pentecost was most memorable for me. From Deacon Christopher Weiland’s fi rst Mass as a deacon, to the celebration of the Church’s birthday after the 9:30 Mass in McDonnell Hall to the SPRED First Communion celebration at the 11:00, I could not help but feel the power of the manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

After a review of proposals, we will be working with the architectural fi rm, Jager, Nickola, Kuhlman and Associates to develop a master plan for the next phase of the capital campaign; To Teach Who Christ Is. Over the next few months there will be several consultations about how we can make the best of our funds raised in the campaign to continue developing our Parish Ministry Center, McDonnell Hall and the Glenview Road entrance. Thank you for your continued support of the Capital Campaign. We also hope to fund two more STEM labs for the school.

On this Memorial Day weekend, we remember our beloved dead, especially those who have served our nation in military service.

May your week be blessed,Fr. Jerry Boland

Thoughts on the

Sunday

Scriptures

In today’s Gospel and reading from the letter of St. Paul we hear of the gift of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

In our devotional life we make the sign of the cross and recite the “Glory Be” as an expression of our faith as a Trinitarian people.

But what does it mean for Christian stewards to accept in a practical way the experience of God in this three-fold gift?

Is it a call to share our own life in community, with compassion and love, and to work for healing, justice, peace and unity?

Is it an invitation to invite others into fellow-ship with us in the unity of the Father, Son and Spirit?

The Power of TransformationTwo years ago we began our journey of Parish Transformation. In that time we have seen a deepening of devotions, a new youth minister, inspiring presentations, and a renewed interest in parish life. A congregation, however, is made up of individuals, and a parish cannot be transformed without the transformation of its members.

I recently spoke with parishioner, Mark Vogel, someone who believes in and has experienced the power of individual transformation. In the past, Mark regularly attended Mass, enjoyed being a lector, and thought of himself as a good Catholic. After taking part in the Transformation process; however, he began to feel there was more he could and should be doing.

Mark recalled his years as a prosecutor and his sense of “running things” and “being in control.” Transformation made him realize that God is the One in control and that we need one another to survive. He feels that change must start with oneself and refers to Luke 2:42, “...how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye.” For Mark, transformation begins with the realization that we must examine our own lives.

Mark now attends daily Mass and the Rosary prayer group, has participated in the three Hearts Afi re programs, has become active on the Scripture Study Board, and attends retreats at Bellarmine. He is grateful to his mother for instilling faith in him and his brothers, but it was not until his Consecration to Mary through Hearts Afi re that he truly learned the importance and power of the rosary. “Sincere prayer is valuable, and I fi nd that the Hearts Afi re sessions anchor me,” says Mark. Prayer brings a “wonderful rewarding peace.” Retreats at Bellarmine are a way “to recharge and connect with God in the silence.” Mark still loves being a lector and now experiences a connection and faith in the Holy Spirit when reading at Mass.

Where he merely attended before, Mark now participates, and he engages with other parishioners who inspire and accompany him. Transformation, says Mark, has given me “a new outlook, new insights, a feeling of belonging, and a connection with faith-fi lled people.”

OLPH Book Club with Fr. PaddyOur book club is reading Interrupting Silence by Walter Brueggemann. When we read the story of the healing of blind Bartimaeus in St. Mark’s gospel, we easily read it as a wonderful miracle. It is certainly that. But the author studies it from the point of view of the crowd silencing Bartimaeus. He brings us back to the trial of Jesus before Pilate.

Pilate spoke to them again, “Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” They shouted back, “Crucify him!” Pilate asked them, “Why, what evil has he done?” And they shouted all the more, “Crucify him!” (Mark 15: 12-13)

“That scene invites us to imagine that in the Bartimaeus narrative it is the same crowd that was readily mobilized against the petitionary summons to Jesus. In the scene with Pilate, they wanted Jesus permanently silenced. Now, in our narrative they wanted Bartimaeus silenced, because he might evoke transformative trouble.

Apparently, Jesus did not hear Bartimaeus’s cry for mercy when he fi rst broke the silence. Perhaps his voice was drowned out by the crowd noise. There is more than one way to silence an unwelcome voice. It would have been possible for the narrative to end there. The crowd might have prevailed as it so often does. Bartimaeus could have settled in resignation about his poverty-stricken disability. He might have sur-rendered to the silence and left the world unchanged. That is what the crowd hoped for. The crowd, in its uncritical political engagement, is not always discerning about new possibility that comes with risk and often votes in fear for the status quo.”

I have no sense of conscious thought. No feelings, no emotions. My thought control is seri-ously damaged. This darkness is my schizophrenia nightmare.
