TREASURER’S REPORT

I would like to extend a personal invitation to each of you to attend this year’s Annual Spring Meeting. It has been an honor to serve as your president alongside so many other outstanding individuals on the Board of Directors. I think our secretary, Dr. Krish Gatande, has put together another terrific program.

The annual meeting is moving back to Columbus and will be held on April 12th and 13th, 2019 at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center. This is located just North of the 270 outer belt, close to the Polaris Mall area. Our group has continued to grow and finding the right space has become more

challenging, but we anticipate this venue will serve our needs very well.

This year, we will continue the Friday evening tradition of hosting a welcome reception that will include a political speaker and the resident poster session. New this year, we will kick off our evening at 6:00pm with a presentation on “Opioid Free Surgery.” This is a very important and timely topic we should all try to embrace. After the presentation, I think we will all be better prepared to implement this strategy in our practices. There will be dinner and drinks in the vendor area to follow our political speaker. Dr. Mark Memo continues to spearhead our Friday events and he has done a tremendous job energizing the evening and incorporating important political issues into our meeting. Please be sure to attend the welcome reception to make new friends and reconnect with old ones.

We are very excited about our main program on Saturday. We have some truly outstanding invited national speakers that includes Dr. James Porter, an Ohio native who is a widely recognized pioneer and thought leader in robotics and a master surgeon, Dr. Stephen Seigel, our NCS invited lecturer and internationally recognized expert for his work related to urinary incontinence and voiding dysfunction, and Dr. Mantu Gupta, a world leader in the research and treatment of urinary stone disease and endourology. We are also very fortunate to have many of the leaders within our membership participating in the program.

This year, in lieu of a live surgical broadcast, we will have a series of talks emphasizing the video-based presentation of surgical technique that will allow for an even greater opportunity for education. Our program themes this year are prostate cancer and stone disease, which should provide a broad appeal to our membership. In the afternoon, there will be a can’t miss presentation on Medical Malpractice Scenarios in Urology: ‘real life cases - what went wrong’.

We have again opened the meeting up to the PCP's, internists, and physician extenders for free CME's, so please encourage them to attend.

Over the past year, we have updated the Ohio Urological Society website for more user friendly navigation, more detailed program information and easier meeting registration. Please visit www.ousweb.org to check it out.

Also new this year will be a social media presence from the OUS. We have named a social media chair to the Board of Directors (Dr. Lawrence Jenkins). If you are on twitter, please follow the society (@OHUrologicalSoc). We will be tweeting meeting updates and highlights.

Lastly, I would like to give a big thanks to our membership for making the Ohio Urological Society one of the very strongest state societies. I hope to see you in Columbus this April! Geoffrey Box, MD OUS President Columbus, OH

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

I am very excited to share with you the wonderful program planned for this year’s Ohio Urological Society (OUS) Annual Spring Meeting to be held on April 12-13, 2019 in Columbus. The OUS Board has organized what promises to be a great meeting with a diverse range of topics and speakers sure to benefit everyone, no matter their practice focus.

Our program will begin on Friday evening with a Welcome Reception and an opportunity to mingle with colleagues and old friends from around the state. On Friday evening, we have an interesting talk on Opioid Free Surgery by Dr. Bodo Knudsen, and the Moderated Poster Session, where our

residents from around the state present the latest research that they are working on.

Our Saturday morning program will begin with resident presentations highlighting the best projects from our urology training institutions in the state. We are introducing an exciting new video session this year called Robotics in Motion, where our panel of surgical experts consisting of Dr. James Porter from Seattle and Dr. Ronney Abaza from Columbus, will demonstrate their robotic techniques and participate in an edited live robotic surgery discussion. This promises to be a lively interactive session between the audience in the meeting room and our panel.

Our next session, New Frontiers in Prostate Cancer, will feature speakers from urology, radiology and medical oncology providing their perspectives on advances in prostate cancer. This will be followed by a panel discussion on Management Dilemmas in Prostate Cancer. We are pleased to have Dr. Steven Seigel from Minnesota as our NCS invited speaker for this year. He will deliver a lecture on ‘Advances in Sacral Neuromodulation in Management of Urinary Incontinence’.

We will kick-off the post lunch program with Dr. Mantu Gupta, Mount Sinai Hospital, New York speaking on new advances in stone surgery - The New Wave: Tube-free, Stent-free, and Stone-free Outpatient PCNL, followed by an expert panel discussion on Management of Complex Stone Disease. The afternoon session will have an interesting talk on Medical Malpractice Scenarios in Urology Real Life Cases - What Went Wrong by Michael Hudak, who is a renowned attorney specializing in this field. There will be a ‘Resident Bowl’, with all Ohio urology training institutions participating in this event.

This year’s program will conclude again with a fun session featuring Bizarre and Interesting Cases that will be submitted by residents across the state. I encourage everyone to join us in Columbus for what promises to be a great meeting! Please invite your local colleagues and partners and allied healthcare providers to come and participate in the OUS. Discounted registrations rates are available for all urology RNs, NPs, PAs and administrative staff.

Best regards, Krishnanath Gaitonde, MD OUS Secretary Cincinnati, OH

NEEDSMany ongoing advances are being made in the percutaneous treatment of stone disease. This includes the use of smaller sheaths/instruments, better lithotripters and avoiding nephrostomy tubes and/or stents. It is important for practicing urologists to be aware of the latest management principles and surgical treatments for the percutaneous management of stone disease in order to minimize patient morbidity and maximize stone free rates.

Prostate cancer is a commonly encountered condition in a urologist’s clinical practice. There are many newer clinically available options for evaluation and treatment of prostate cancer. This includes advanced imaging modalities, the use of focal therapy and a variety of medical options for those diagnosed with metastatic disease. Urologists need to be aware of these and determine how they might be used in their own clinical practice.

Overactive bladder (OAB) is one of the most prevalent conditions treated by urologists and can have a profound impact on a patient’s quality of life. Several third line treatment options are now available and include Sacral Neuromodulation. Some patients can see significant improvement with this treatment option. Urologists should be familiar with Sacral Neuromodulation and treatment factors including patient selection, device choice and outcomes.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVESAt the conclusion of the OUS 2019 Annual Spring Meeting, attendees should be able to:

1. Describe the management principles for patients needing PCNL to treat large renal stones, including the role of stents, nephrostomy tubes and overnight admission. 2. Describe new imaging modalities for advanced disease in prostate cancer.3. Recognize the benefits and limitations of using focal therapy to treat prostate cancer.4. Recognize the indications and benefits of Sacral Neuromodulation for urinary incontinence. 5. Describe surgical techniques for robotic retroperitoneal surgery and partial nephrectomy.

ACCREDITATION AND CME POLICYThis activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint providership of the American College of Legal Medicine and the OUS. The American College of Legal Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
