Jesus Christ, King of the Universe!
What is truth? These famous words from John’s gospel were immortalized in the 17th century by the
famous British essayist, Sir Francis Bacon. What is truth said jesting Pilate; and would not stay for
answer. For Pontius Pilate, the powerful Roman procurator, truth was a mystery and in the context of his
question, we see that his question, if a joke, was a joke of despair. Pilate thought that he understood power
and the way to exercise it. Power requires strength, firmness, and wisdom. In spite of his confidence in
himself, Pilate was a failure. He had no knowledge of the people he governed and didn’t care to gain it. He
had disregard for the Jews and lacked sympathy for their religious beliefs and history. He had received
several reprimands from Rome, but he continued to challenge with great disdain what he saw as Jewish
superstition.
All the evidence demonstrates that his hatred for the Jewish religious hierarchy inclined him to be
sympathetic toward Jesus’ situation. In his usual ironic attitude, he asked Jesus the famous question. Prior
to this Jesus had remained silent. He had given the High Priest, Herod, and Pilate, himself, no answer. His
silence demonstrated that these worldly men had no common ground for a discussion with him. What a
terrible day it is, when Jesus is silent.
As the Roman soldiers attempted to make a caricature of Jewish kingship through their treatment of Jesus,
Pilate treated the Jews with arrogant contempt. Recognizing the immutable majesty, undaunted courage,
and serene acceptance of the Cross, Pilate wistfully tried to save Jesus.
This episode was not the story of a poor person caught up in political circumstances, not the story of a
simple carpenter hounded to his death. This is the story of a triumphant, regal procession by the supreme
witness to truth. This is the story of a royal procession to his throne, where Jesus Christ, the King, conquered
the world with love.
Jesucristo, Rey del Universo!
¿Qué es la verdad? Estas famosas palabras del evangelio de Juan fueron inmortalizadas en el siglo XVII
por el famoso ensayista británico Sr. Francis Bacon. Lo que es verdad dice bromeando Pilato; y no se
quedaría por respuesta. Para Poncio Pilato, el poderoso procurador romano, la verdad era un misterio y,
en el contexto de su pregunta, vemos que su pregunta, si es una broma, era una broma de desesperación.
Pilato pensó que entendía el poder y la forma de ejercerlo. El poder requiere fuerza, firmeza y sabiduría. A
pesar de su confianza en sí mismo, Pilato fue un fracaso. No tenía conocimiento de las personas a las que
había gobernado y no le importaba obtenerlo. No tenía en cuenta a los judíos y carecía de simpatía por sus
creencias religiosas y su historia. El había recibido varias represiones de Roma, pero el habia continuado
desafiando con gran desdén lo que él vio como una superstición judía.

situación de Jesús. En su habitual actitud irónica, le hizo a Jesús la famosa pregunta. Antes de esto Jesús
había permanecido en silencio. Le había dado al sumo sacerdote, a Herodes y a Pilato, ha él mismo, ninguna
respuesta. Su silencio demostró que estos hombres del mundo no tenían un terreno común para una
discusión con él. Qué día tan terrible, cuando Jesús estaba en silencio.
Cuando los soldados romanos intentaron hacer una caricatura de la realeza judía a través de su trato a Jesús,
Pilato trató a los judíos con arrogante desprecio. Al reconocer la inmutable majestad, el coraje implacable
y la aceptación serena de la Cruz, Pilato trató de salvar a Jesús.
Este episodio no fue la historia de una persona pobre atrapada en circunstancias políticas, ni la historia de
un simple carpintero perseguido hasta su muerte. Esta es la historia de una procesión triunfal y regia del
supremo testigo de la verdad. Esta es la historia de una procesión real a su trono, donde Jesucristo, el Rey,
conquistó el mundo con amor.
