Traditional poetry:

A piece of literature written in meter; verse.

Meter : poetic measure; arrangement of words in regularly measured, patterned, or rhythmic lines or verses.

Verse: a single metrical line in a poetic composition; one line of poetry.

Poetry form

FORM The appearance of the words on the page

LINE A group of wordstogether on one line of the poem.

STANZA A group of lines arranged together

KINDS OF STANZAS Couplet = a two line stanza

Triplet (Tercet) = a three line stanza

Quatrain = a four line stanza

Quintet = a five line stanza

Sestet (Sextet) = a six line stanza

Septet = a seven line stanza

Octave = an eight line stanza

Ballad

A ballad is a narrative poem, usually set to music; thus, it often is a story told in a song. Any story form may be told as a ballad, such as historical accounts or fairy tales in verse form.

which was written by Langston Hughes is an excellent example of a ballad.

cinquain

a short poem consisting of five, usually unrhymed lines containing respectively two, four, six, eight and two syllables.

Haiku

Japanese poem of 17 syllables arranged in three lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables.

Syllables : a unit of spoken language that consist of one or more vowel sounds alone. “sun” is one syllable and “sunshine” is two syllables.

Free verse poetry

Is a type of poetry that is written without using strict meter, rhythm or rhyme, but is still recognized as poetry.

sonnet

A poem of 14 lines, usually in iambic pentameter ( stress is on the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th syllables of each line), restricted to a definite rhyme scheme.

Shakespeare wrote sonnets.
