Have you ever met a 10-year-old who dreams of growing up to be a manager?
In most languages, “control” is the first synonym for the word “manage”.
Yet it’s impossible to build a highly adaptable organization without first expanding the scope of employee freedom.
The answer starts with incentives.
If you empower people but don’t give them information, they just fumble in the dark.
If you get head office out of the way and give people accurate data about their performance, they quickly figure out that its good to be open when there’s money to be made.
And it hit me: no one at head office even knows when the stores are open.
