• Stop talking start listening• Relax to focus on the speaker• Help speaker feel at ease to speak• Avoid distractions and focus on what is being said• Empathise and understand the issue from speaker’s perspective• Be patient and let speaker continue after a pause• Be impartial and avoid personal prejudice• Mirror the volume, tonality even body language of speaker• Listen for ideas to form the whole picture, not just words in bits and pieces• Watch out for non-verbal communication gestures, facial expressions or eye-movements etc.
