Why Buy Fair Trade Coffee?? The coffee sold at St. Francis Xavier is purchased from Equal Exchange Fairly Traded. There is a lot behind this coffee. “We work closely with our farmer partners, year after year, to better understand each other’s needs. The result is a trusting relationship and delicious coffee.” Beth Ann Caspersen, Quality Control Manager Fair Trade builds right relationships between buyers and sellers that are rooted in the principles of human dignity and solidarity. Fair Trade:

Respects human dignity Promotes the common good Advances economic justice Empowers disadvantaged people Connects us with the people who create the things we buy Cultivates global solidarity

The Catholic Relief Services Fair Trade Program creates opportunities for us to bring these core values of our faith to bear on the choices we make as consumers—choices that have the power to lift our brothers and sisters out of poverty. Effort is made to see that these coffee farmers are given a fair wage!!!

An Update on the 125th Anniversary Capital Campaign and Archdiocese’s To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign

This summer, SFX begins its final year (Year 5) of the 125th Anniversary Capital Campaign. Two major disbursements remain: 1) Fire Alarm improvements (budget of $150,000). These improvements were not within the original Master

Plan scope, but the Village of LaGrange required their completion by 2021 before they approved the construction permit for Unity Hall and the Education Building improvements. This work is expected to be done in summer 2020.

2) Final payment to the St. Agatha Parish Education Endowment (Approximately $100,000). As a

participating parish of the Archdiocese’s To Teach Who Christ Is (TTWCI) Campaign, SFX allocated $750,000 of 125th Anniversary Capital Campaign dollars specifically to St. Agatha Parish. Our total pledge will be fulfilled by June 2020. St. Agatha’s pastor has assured us that St. Agatha children are receiving scholarships from the income generated from the endowment SFX established for their benefit.

Campaign payments continue to come in as parishioners fulfill their pledges. Further updates are forthcoming! God bless you for making a substantial impact on our Catholic communities!

It’s Time to Sign Up for RCIA!

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Part 3 of 3 Articles*

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process of spiritual and educational formation through which adults become fully initiated members of the Catholic Church.

What Is the Goal of RCIA?

RCIA is all about conversion – growth and change taking place in our hearts and minds so that we can more fully live in relationship with God and each other. It is about deepening our faith, and exploring what belief in God means for our lives and how it is reflected in our actions. The purpose is not to check off a class requirement or to see how much information you can learn, but rather to assist you in becoming a living, breathing, active disciple of Christ! A note for those with mixed feelings: We are all on a journey. Many of us come to this process with different experiences of life and faith. Your thoughts about starting this process might range from “Great! When can I start?” to “Gee, this seems like an awful lot!” Wherever you are on that spectrum, we are excited about and open to walking with you as you explore how God might be inviting you into a deeper relationship. The RCIA process is definitely a commitment of time and energy, but each Easter we hear folks say it was time well spent and the months really flew by. We work hard to give you the experiences and tools you need to not only make this commitment of faith, but also to keep it! If you are unsure this is the right step for you, you are not alone. RCIA at its best helps people find their way on their spiritual journey. If in that process you discern this isn’t the right fit for you, or not the right time, that is ok, too!

Next Steps

Let us know of your interest, and we will put you in touch with an RCIA Team Member. They will meet with you to share details about the process, and answer any questions you might have. Contact Susan Lindsay at [email protected] or call the parish office: 708-352-0168.

*Additional details, and the complete article can be found at www.sfxlg.org, under Parish/Sacraments/Becoming Catholic.

Seeing the Holy on Saturday, August 17 from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm with Facilitator Christine Parks, CSJ. Bring your digital camera for a day of seeing, and being present to the Holy–through your eyes and the lens of your camera. The day will include input and reflection, individual time for photographing outdoors and praying with the Holy you see around you, and sharing your experience, prayer and insights. Cost: $60 (includes lunch) 6 min/16 max participants. Sagawau Canyon Nature Preserve Walk on Thursday, August 22 from 9:15 am until 2:00 pm with Facilitators Mary Fishman and a Cook County Forest Preserve Guide. A canyon less than 13 miles from LaGrange Park? It’s not quite the Grand Canyon, but it’s OUR canyon, it’s 1100 feet long–and it’s a much easier climb up and down! On this private, guided tour we will see fossils and unusual plants, and learn about the geology that shaped Chicagoland’s only canyon. We will be wading in a stream, so wear shoes that have a good grip and that can get wet. Cost: $25 (includes transportation). Bring your own lunch. Advance registration required. To register online and see a complete list of our new 2019 Programs, please go to www.csjthewell.org or call 708-482-5048. The Well Spirituality Center, 1515 West Ogden Avenue in LaGrange Park.
