• His images were designed to be thought provoking. This is seen in works such as ‘Ceci n’est pas une pipe’

• Some of his works include ‘Son of Man’, ‘The talking room’ and Ceci n’est pas une pipe.

• Mother committed suicide when he was 14 years old-it is said that Magritte witnessed rescuers pulling his mothers body from the river, the fabric of her dress was covering her face. This vision haunted him and is seen in his works with faces covered with cloth.

CONTOUR CONTOUR LINESLINES:

Cross contour lines are drawn lines which travel, as the name suggests, across the form. Cross contours may be horizontal or vertical, as on the right side of the example, or both. Often, in more complex forms, cross-contours will be drawn at varying angles. In this rather lumpy example, the grid of cross-contours looks a bit like the gridlines on a globe

To learn how to apply this knowledge to your own surreal room designs.

OutcomesTo have learnt what one point perspective means

and to have produced a one point perspective drawing of a room with a window and door

Page 37: Surrealism 1 10 all adapted 2

Does anybody know what one point perspective actually means?

Page 38: Surrealism 1 10 all adapted 2

Definition

A view looking deep into a picture, where everything in the picture leads to one point.

Page 39: Surrealism 1 10 all adapted 2

One point perspective

What is a vanishing point?

Where do you think the vanishing point is in this image?

What is a horizon line?

Where do you think the horizon line is?

Where is the Horizon line in This image?

Page 41: Surrealism 1 10 all adapted 2

One point perspective

This is when all Major lines in an image lead to one point, This is called the vanishing point.

Even though we Know the railwayLines are the sameDistance apart theyAppear to meet at One point in the Distance the vanishingPoint. (the deepest spot of the picture where things appear to vanish)

With one point perspective the image always leads towards the vanishing point. The vanishing point sits on the horizonThe horizon is where the sky meets the land.

Page 42: Surrealism 1 10 all adapted 2

For each image using a coloured pencil mark and label the vanishing point and the horozan line

Objectives To understand how to use influences from

both primary (observational drawing)and secondary sources(images of objects), to create a surreal room design.

To understand how to use surreal artists work to influence your work in some way.

Outcomes

To have created an initial design for your surreal room.

To have applied bold colour to this work.
