Introduction to 3rd Place Media
What is a 3rd Place? In 1989 urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined
the phrase “Third Place”. Ray concluded that in all
advanced societies there are three important
places:
1. The First Place, the place most important to us is
home.
2. The Second Place is where we work.
3. And the Third Place is the place we hang out
between home and work.
Ray Oldenburg
The First 3rd Place
Around the time the book was published a young marketing executive was
on vacation in Italy.
He noticed people hanging out at cafes all day long.
He had an epiphany,
Collected some investors,
Then bought the company out from under the owners.
Then he started building living rooms across the United States.
Places where people could hang out between home and work.
That man’s name is Howard Shultz.
And today those living rooms are called Starbucks.
Starbucks was the first purpose built ’3rd Place’.
The Virtual 3rd Place
Shortly thereafter, someone realized that a 3rd Place didn’t have to be a
physical place. It could be a virtual place.
And MySpace was born.
And Facebook was born.
And:
The Importance of Social Media
What makes social media networks so valuable is that just like Starbucks
they are places we like to hang out.
A place to meet and connect with people that share similar interests.
We enjoy meeting with like-minded people to share the same things.
And we go back often to connect with them.
How 3rd Places Work
3rd Places are driven by compelling original content which engages the visitor.
That engagement manifests itself in the form of a dialogue which begins on your social media network.
Our goal is to convert that comment or Facebook ‘Like’ into an email address.
An email address into a customer.
And a customer into an advocate who shares their passion for your brand through their own social media networks.
Now your customers are marketing your brand for you.
Conversion Wheel Starts With Content
