The Lenten season began on Ash Wednesday, February18 and continues until Easter, April 5. We do not count Sundays in Lent as Sundays are celebrations of the Resurrection. However, Lent offers us a season of reflection and contempla-tion. It is a season to take stock of our lives. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faith-ful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days.

During the season of Lent and Easter our worship experiences (see article on page 2) offer us oppor-tunities for celebration, for reflection, for music and inspiration.

Also during this time, as we approach the spring of the year, we are offering you the chance to brush up on your Disciples history (see article on page 3) Vanya Mullinax, our Wesley Theological Seminary student is working with Rev. Zuber and Rev. Tatham to provide four after-church forums to open up the conversation for those who are long-time Disciples, to those who may be new, to who we are. On Sundays March 1, 8, 15, & 22, following Coffee Fellowship, we’ll gather at the stage end of Harlow Hall for our conversations and study. PALM SUNDAY, HOLY WEEK,

EASTER

PALM SUNDAY As his semester with us draws to a close, Vanya Mullinax will be preaching on Palm Sunday, March 29, and our Jazz Quartet will be playing. Jesus’ triumph entry into Jerusalem will be celebrated with a “Na’Leans” [New Orleans] style processional of “When the Saints Go Marching” as our kids and adults process singing down the aisle waving the traditional palms. The kids will spend Sunday School time on March 8th, March 15th, and March 22nd, drawing pictures for Palm Sunday and learning the song.

MAUNDY THURSDAY/GOOD FRIDAY In the past our Elders have offered a variety of services for Maundy Thursday. Plans are still pending as to what will be offered this year, but information will be forthcoming via the weekly E-Minders and announcements. Community Good Friday services will be listed on E-Minders as the information on those are available.

E aster Sunday

We are all looking forward to lots of excitement on April 5th. At the 11:00am Worship, along with our adult

choir, special music will include a string quartet. For our 12:15 Easter Egg Hunt we’ll have holiday desserts, lots of eggs to find, live music, a bunny and chicken petting zoo, the Easter Bunny for group photos, and prizes for the kids. We’re pulling out all the stops again so invite your family, friends and neighbors to the celebration!

History of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Are you a “cradle” Disciple, born and raised in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), but you can’t really remember all

that stuff you heard growing up?

Do you come from a different faith tradition, but love what you have found here at NC4 and want to know more about how we got where we are?

about Christianity and seek to know more about how the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) forms its theology and ideology?

All seekers, questioners, explorers and just the down-right curious are invited to participate in four (4) after-church

conversation forums on the history of the Christian Church

(Disciples of Christ). These conversations will be held on

Sundays in Harlow Hall, after worship March 1, 8, 15, & 22

Opportunities NORTH CHEVY CHASE CHRISTIAN CHURCH SCHOLARSHIP The Scholarship Fund of North Chevy Chase Christian Church, established in early 1980’s has benefited many of our young people as they have made the transition from high school to college. Currently the Scholarship is providing assistance to five of the young people from our congregation: Joshua Gatera (son of Rose Bisengo), Nichole Hawkins (daughter of Lori and Glenn Hawins), Brandon and Arrey Takang (sons of Caroline Eyabi), and Leah Solomon (daughter of Nancy and Bob Solomon). These scholarships are presented to the students upon completion of an application to the Scholarship Committee. It is the time of year when once again we encourage any of our young adults who are attending an accredited institution of higher education to apply for a scholarship. The Application may be found on our website at

http://media1.razorplanet.com/share/511271-5658/resources/761727_ScholarshipApplicationSpring2015.pdf Below is a letter of thanks from Brandon and Arrey Takang:

Outreach

NC4 Permanent Endowment Fund Purchases Bicycles for Pastors and Nurs-es in the Community of Disciples of Christ in Congo (CDCC)

North Chevy Chase Christian Church (NC4) was seeking ways to deepen their rela-tionship with the Disciples of Christ Global Ministries. They decided to support one of the oldest and largest Disciples of Christ communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly known as Zaire). Since its founding in 1889 the church now functions

with 22 regions to serve 650,000 members in 358 congregations. These communities are confronted with many socio-economic problems, including a rapid increase in HIV/AIDS and the disruption of services and education as a consequence of years of civil war. Although the economic situation is improving families struggle every day to find suitable clothing & to pay for health care. Many of the church parishes span twelve heavily-wooded miles with mostly non-existent roads mak-ing it nearly impossible for pastors and nurses to reach all the members. Consequently, the members fail to receive vital information, personal counseling and spiritual guidance from their church leaders. Health care workers have difficulty transporting vaccines and medicine or making home visits with sick patients. To facilitate these services the CDCC has a goal to purchase six motorcycles and 300 bicycles. In response to this need NC4 recently donated $5,000 toward the purchase and mainte-nance of 45 bicycles. NC4 hopes to learn more about the CDCC from Sharon McNeely who served as a short-term volun-teer in Mbandaka, Congo from February 1 – April 30, 2014 as an English teacher. Sharon will be joining NC4 in worship on Sunday, May 31, 2015. This is viewed as a first step in building greater ties between NC4 and the Disciples Community in Congo.

NC4 Permanent Endowment Fund contributes

$2500 to Project Hope North Chevy Chase Christian Church has been actively undergoing a spiritual journey to write our Future Story. We are traveling along the road of discernment to understand what God is calling us to. Many other churches in our denomination are on a similar journey. To help guide Disciples churches through this process the Hope Partnership for Missional Transformation was created. The Hope Partnership is a ministry of the Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) that is committed to empowering and equipping congregations and their clergy and lay leaders to do God’s mission how and where they are called to serve. Hope offers a Leader-ship Academy that provides the training, coaching and peer support that leaders need to unleash the courage and creativity required for Misssional Transformation. The Missional journey is just starting in Central Los Angeles with a group of predominantly African-American congregations; The New International House of Worship, Faith Christian Church, the Safehouse, Abundant Life Christian Church and Returning to the Lord Christian Church. Each congre-gation paid $400 to participate but still needs $4,000 to complete the full process in 24 months. NC4 recognizes the importance of Missional Transformation and the financial challenge economically disadvantaged congregations are facing. To empower these 4 churches in their journey the NC4 Permanent Endowment Fund donated $2500 to the Hope Partnership. This vital gift was placed in the Cana Fund which allows matching grants. NC4 hopes this gift encourages other churches to join us in promoting Disciple growth, inter-racial justice and friendship.

Mondays — Day off

Tuesdays — Prayer Group, staff meetings, web maintenance, bulletin preparation

Wednesdays — 1-4pm Appointments in & out of the office; evening ensemble rehearsals

Thursdays — 1-4pm Appointments in & out of the office

Fridays — Sermon preparation (out of the office) I am always available for pastoral emergencies by call-ing 301-335-7344. ~ Rev. Cheryl L. Tatham

KITCHEN PROJECT Our kitchen & oven have now been professionally cleaned. THE NEXT STEP for our kitchen project will be the installation of a new fire-prevention hood system. Once this is com-

pleted, we will schedule an “all hands-on-deck” work day to clean out cabinets, clean up pots & pans, and throw out old and broken utensils. There are two ways you can help: 1) Contribute to our kitchen refurbishment

(mark your check “kitchen”) 2) Sign up for our work day by emailing

Rev. Tatham [email protected]. (Date To Be Announced soon)
