Sioux Lookout displays community solidarity Geoff ShieldsstAff Writer

DESPItE the adverse weather c o n d i t i o n s ,

approximately 50 community members of all ages gathered at the Peace Gardens adjacent to St. andrew’s United Church to celebrate the fourth annual LGBt (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, transgender) Pride event on august 10.

the idea originated in 2010 and was put together by a few local community members, fueled by the dream of a young woman volunteer from Katimavik who was working in our community during that time.

The first event was put together through the combined efforts of Melissa Wilson, Brian MacKinnon and Cathy-anne Kelly with the full support of St. andrew’s United Church which was the first church to welcome gay people into the congregation.

Since its inception the event has grown, thanks to community support. This is the first year the celebration has been included as an official event in Blueberry Festival.

the afternoon was opened by Elder Juliette Blackhawk who honored

and blessed the day with a traditional Ojibway ceremony. With the aid of a stone which was passed around to the participants, she created an opportunity for people to come forth and relate why they had chosen to attend.

Following this, the music with a salsa theme started and despite a torrential downpour which occurred at this time, the crowd commenced to gather in a circle, where they danced, laughed and cheered, displaying community spirit, harmony and togetherness. also included in the festivities, was a potluck meal and free salsa dance lessons from ONYX Dance Studios.

St andrew’s Church minister Warner Bloomfield was present throughout the afternoon and had come up with the idea to expand Pride to include a film night with the screening of a controversial documentary directed by Roger Ross Williams titled God Loves Uganda which explores the effect that right–wing evangelism is having in Uganda. The film was shown that evening at the church, followed by a post-screening conversation with the audience.

Community participants expressed their feelings. Reilly Scott said, “It was a very powerful and emotional event for me. I am so proud to be part of a community that is so supportive of diversity and individuality. I feel very at home here and I am happy to have the opportunity to celebrate PRIDE with my friends and adopted family. Dancing in the rain was so much fun.”

Joyce timpson concurred. “It was a joyful event. What a delight to see so many people joyously dancing in the rain, laughing and soaking wet. Formerly people who were not gay would hesitate to come to an event in support of sexual minorities for fear they would be thought to be gay or lesbian themselves. this has never been the case in Sioux Lookout and this year was no different.”

Melissa Wilson added, “the spirit of everyone in attendance was positive. I loved dancing in the rain. People were simply honest, open and loving.”

Nadine arpin, this year’s event organizer, summed up, “Garnet angeconeb, who was present, shared with everyone in attendance that there was a time in Sioux Lookout’s history when as an Ojibway man he did not feel

welcome in his own traditional territory. I believe that Sioux Lookout

has come a long way since then and I am grateful and proud of our progressive town

and our ability as a community to accept diversity in all its glorious forms.”

Despite heavy rain, members of the community came to support, attend, speak and dance at this year’s Gay Pride event held in the Peace Gardens of St. Andrew’s United Church August 10.

Provincial funding announced for area initiativesTim Brody

AssociAte editor

FOUR initiatives in our area will benefit from

Northern Ontario heritage Fund Corporation (NOhFC) funding.

Eabametoong First Nation will receive $44,325 to conduct a

community-wide holistic planning exercise and to develop a community strategic plan that will research the potential direct benefits of nearby mining developments. It will also assess existing local resources and determine current and future opportunities for the community.

Neskantaga Economic Development Corporation will receive $44,325 to complete a comprehensive community economic development plan to maximize benefits and minimize potential negative effects from the Ring of Fire mining development.

the Whitefeather

Forest Community Resource Management authority is receiving $50,000 to help them identify and market forest products from the timber associated with the Whitefeather Forest Initiative.

Finally North Caribou Lake First Nation is receiving

$24,900 for a feasibility study and preliminary design of a small business centre for the community.

“I am very pleased that the NOhFC continues to invest in all regions across the North, making it possible for us to work together to

build a successful, compassionate and united province where everyone has the opportunity to connect, contribute, and enjoy a high quality of life,” concluded Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and Mines and Chair of the NOhFC.

Compliance very good among area boaters Tim Brody

AssociAte editor

BOatERS are doing a good job on the water

this summer, according to Sioux Lookout OPP.

Sergeant andrew Simpson shared, “Certainly to date we have patrolled the Sioux Lookout area waterways on numerous occasions and we have found

compliance to be very good.”

he cautioned, “as always, we remind boaters the most important piece of safety equipment is a life jacket.”

a media release from the OPP marine program states, “the majority of boating fatality victims recovered in OPP marine investigations this season would have

likely survived had they been wearing a lifejacket or PFD.”

Simpson commented, “Obviously we had the fatalities earlier this year on Lost Lake. the investigation is still going on but we can say that not enough life jackets, and alcohol, were contributing factors.”

Simpson asked the public’s help with

an issue police have been encountering this summer. “Something very important for boaters to remember is when you are going out, tell someone where you are going and when you are expected back and leave as much detail as possible. We have

responded to several overdue boater calls this year and that’s always a concern that we don’t have very much information as to where the person is. If all we know is they’re on Minnitaki, that’s not as helpful as if they said this is where I am going

on Minnitaki, names of specific bays, islands, landmarks and we can target those areas first in a search.”

Boaters are also reminded to take their valid pleasure craft operators card with them when out on the water. 1 Col: 1.5625” 2 Col: 3.3” 3 Col: 5.0375” 4 Col: 6.775” 5 Col: 8.5125” 6 Col: 10.25”X: 0.25”

Cheech and Chong revisited

this morning I was up on the roof taking pictures when my friend Pie called. Luckily I had my phone up there with me.

I wanted to update my friends with a picture of Cheech and Chong, the two trees I accidentally disfigured last winter while cutting down some nuisance poplars nearby.

My two crippled boys - one with no limbs and the other without a top half - are looking pretty unique and spiffy in the front yard, but I’m having a hard time finding a photography angle that shows them off.

that’s why I was trying to climb the stepladder I’d balanced

in the trailer of my atV last night. I’m not sure why Mary came running when she caught sight of my photoacrobatics balancing act. I didn’t have my hearing aids in so didn’t catch everything she said, but I know she was pretty excited and the words fool, dumbass, wine, broken neck spilled out of her mouth as she grabbed hold of the ladder. So I climbed down to hear better what was so exciting.

I’d like to think she was admiring my prowess and determination to get a good picture. and she’s the one who made the great suggestion that I climb up on the roof (tOMORROW!!!) and try from there.

So, at 8 o’clock this morning, I was up on the roof when Pie called. I described the weather and told him what a nice day it was so far. he was impressed, I think, when I told him Cheech and Chong made a handsome couple and I was taking pictures of them from the rooftop.

Betty Lee-Lawrence, representing the Ontario trillium Foundation,

stated, “a library is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where people can come and support each other to reach their full potential.”

Library board chair Joanna Klein commented, “I’d like to express our gratitude to both the Government of Ontario and the Ontario trillium Foundation for supporting our vision for the future of library services.”

Referring to the Community Media

Room where the library board meets, she stated, “It has been exciting to watch the transformation take place over the past few months. In fact, the entire library has undergone some significant changes over the past year.”

Chief Librarian Wendy MacDonald said, “a library offers equal access to its resources to everyone who walks through its doors.”

ass is tan t /Chi ldren’s Librarian offered his own answer to what a public library is. “to me, a public library is a shared place that is designed to connect people and information.”

he continued, “a library is about action, getting things done.”

the library has taken that statement to heart and adopted the motto, “You can do that here.”

Laverty spoke of how in his first week on the job, MacDonald, his boss, told him to reconsider everything and not accept the status quo.

“the public library is more than a building. It’s an essential community hub, and one that squeezes every cent of the taxpayers’ dollars that we receive,” he said.

In early 2014 the library found out it had been successful in both of the grants it had applied for from the Government of Ontario and the Ontario trillium Foundation.

the trillium grant was used for new computers and furniture. the Ontario government grant went to the creation of a mobile app for the library, allowing staff to provide training to the public, a research station for students and adults, and a download centre.

In the Community Media Room people will be able to browse the Internet, prepare documents, scan photographs,

and edit movies and photographs. the room will be used for training sessions and is also available to be rented out.

Free Wi-Fi is provided at the library.

“as we continue to re-invent what a public library means to Sioux Lookout, to build the best library for our community, this means we had to give up a little bit of control and let our patrons not only tell us what they want to see in our library but to take ownership and realize the power they have. a library is a shared place. We invite people in and they let us know what they want to see. Our grand re-opening is symbolic of a shift in public libraries, not just ours… we’re designing a library that allows people to connect with the information that is relevant and meaningful to their lives,” Laverty said.

he continued, “Instead of us saying here is what we have to offer, come and get it, we’re saying what do you want to see here, what do you want to see on the shelf, what do want to see us doing here and let’s work together to make that happen.”

the library’s mobile app was launched and is available on the Google Play Store and apple app Store.

“With one click you’re reading an e-book, you’re placing

a hold, you’re checking on online resources, you are researching newspapers, and you are staying engaged with us,” Laverty said.

there are plans to put up signage in Oji-Cree and Ojibway throughout the library.

“When people walk in the door they can read a welcoming message in their language,” Laverty said as an example.

although the ways technology will benefit library users was front and centre at the grand re-opening, Laverty stated, “I don’t want people to have a sense that a computer is replacing a book, or we’re getting rid of books and putting in screens. they’re complementing each other. they are

combining. there are different ways of reading and we’re doing our best… but we do live in

the information age and the media room and the media centre represent us boldly going where no library

has gone before in a sense. But we don’t want to abandon the core of who we are.”

resource management and executive search consulting firm in Winnipeg.

Bowes has many clients in Northwestern Ontario and is a strong booster for Sioux Lookout. She is a member of the Foundation Board at Meno Ya Win health Centre and previously rallied former Sioux Lookout residents living in Winnipeg by holding a social event that raised $10,000 for the hospital.

Some of the book contributors have close affiliations with Sioux Lookout and Lac Seul and Bowes paid tribute to them. “Personally, I am so proud of our Sioux Lookout authors. their stories come from the heart and demonstrate the important role that women have played. the stories that have been told show remarkable strength against adversity far beyond anything I have personally experienced. all of these women still have a positive spirit and through sharing these stories it gives insight, hope and courage for other women,” she said.

One of those authors is Patricia M. Ningewance, an Ojibway woman who was born and raised in

Obishikokaang (Lac Seul) First Nation. a linguist in her native language, she has taught introductory and intermediate Ojibwe at university level in Ontario and Manitoba for 19 years. She has also worked in Ojibwe language radio and television production and is the author of books dealing with the Ojibwe language that includes talking Gookom’s Language.

Ningewance told what motivated her to contribute her story. “I saw it as an opportunity to communicate with the next generation of native women. that was my reason for agreeing to be in the book. Like other native women of my age, it was a difficult time leaving my own community to enter the bigger world out there. I wish there had been a book like this for me to help me map out my life. I hope young native women will read it and learn from the experiences of the previous generations. as for the general public, I would hope that the average person will appreciate what we native women have lived through.”

She continued, “I wrote on the theme of fear because that has

been ever-present in my life. I grew up in hudson and later in Sault Ste. Marie. My mother always cautioned me to be careful all the time. She was there to raise me in hudson but not in Sault Ste. Marie. I took her teaching to mean I should fear everything and I did. then I thought that I wouldn’t have much of a life if I grew up in fear so I began confronting my fears, one by one, and that’s what I wrote about.

“the message is one of empowerment for the young native woman. We can do our life’s work without living in fear of all the things that we fear today. Fear prevents us from being all that we can be.

“Many native women turn to alcohol and drugs to cope with fear. Native women are the most preyed on people today. We need not be preyed on if we build up ourselves to be strong and be true to the traditional beliefs. today I feel safe because I rely on those traditional beliefs.

“I just came back from visiting the Gobi Desert in Mongolia where I rode camels with my grandson and his mom. It was an exhilarating experience but I would not have been able to do

Message is one of empowerment for the young native woman

it if I let my fears rule my life as before.”

Marie Lands currently holds the position of Executive Director with the Ikwe-Widdjiitiwin (Women helping Women) organization which offers support to aboriginal women and their children and an end to family violence by offering shelter and support during crisis situations by nurturing hope, change and empowerment for tomorrow.

her grandfather was born in Lac Seul but moved with her father to McIntosh where she was born.

Land currently resides in Winnipeg and spoke about how she felt when asked by the publishers to make a literary contribution,

“I felt honored to be asked to participate, although initially I was quite surprised and shocked to be asked to write a chapter as trying to capture the essence of those times can be difficult. What I wrote about was my life story from childhood, young adulthood, and up to the present.

“I found it difficult to look back and relive some of those times, particularly with my experiences in residential school. that was the beginning of a particularly traumatic life and I found it hard to put words to paper initially.”

She concluded, “I think these books will be educational, very informative, real lived life experiences and stories, and I think it will show that aboriginal women are quite

resilient and when given opportunities they can overcome that shame, oppression, violence and racism.

“My overall feeling is that it’s a great task for someone to take on this great, wonderful project. It’s a big contribution to aboriginal people in general. My story is one of many and if it helps someone to understand aboriginal women and families then I am happy and satisfied to know that I have contributed and if my story inspires someone to have hope then it’s all for the better.”

Corrine Garrick-Genereux is a feisty lady who, at 88, is the oldest contributor to the publication. a mother of six children and 10 grandchildren, she has lived in Winnipeg for the past eight years and spoke about the hardships of her early life. “I grew up in two Point River in a fishing camp on the north shore just near the hudsons Bay Post in Lac Seul. My early life was very hard as I was given heavy chores to do around the place. I was the oldest daughter out of nine children (four boys and five girls) and we grew up without benefit of medical, dental or educational facilities.

“My mother had married a white man and as a result, according to the laws of the day, my status was taken away although it has since been restored to me. My father used to call me a useless so and so, although by the time I reached 21 he wouldn’t let any of us leave

because as we got older we were his workers.

“Eventually I left and my first job was as a housekeeper at Osnaburgh Nursing Station north of Lac Seul. Prior to my marriage, I was a seamstress at the Zone hospital. afterward my husband and I, together with our children,

followed where the work was, which took us to Red Lake, Ear Falls, Quibell, hudson and finally Sioux Lookout, which I remember in the ‘40s as being a rough town and you had to be pretty tough to survive. today of course it is different and I still like to come back here and visit family and

old friends.”She explained what

inspired her to participate in the project. “At first I wasn’t quite sure I could do it because I have never had any education and I didn’t think I would be able to write it. however as you get older, you can remember things a lot clearer from early days. It did bring back a lot of painful memories, but at the same time it was an emotional release to be able to talk about it.

“I wrote it as an inspirational story to be an example that, even though I came from a hard life, I could with determination overcome any sadness that occurred in my past, an inspiration to future generations. Even now at 88 I still feel that I am moving forward.

“My children are all doing well and I hope that my contribution to the book will inspire future generations of young people not to

wallow in self pity but to follow their dreams and make a goal for themselves and work hard to make it come true because that’s what I did. I didn’t use any aliases so it’s my story and I am proud of it.”

G a r r i c k - G e n e r e u x concluded, “I would like to start a more detailed book about my childhood memories. I have lots of little stories of vignettes of my early life in Lac Seul which I would like to write about which I think people would be interested in reading.”

there are plans to publish a third volume in the series and the PWN is currently looking for authors to contribute their stories.

the books can be purchased by accessing the organization publishing website www.pwnbooks.com. they will also be available through amazon at the beginning of September.

Invitation for Public Comment Independent Audit of the Caribou Forest

Under the Independent Forest Audit program, all Forest Management Units in the province are audited every five years to ensure that their management has followed approved plans and complies with the requirements of the Crown Forest Sustainability Act. ArborVitae Environmental Services Ltd. invites you to provide written comments to the Independent Audit of the Caribou Forest.

This audit evaluates the forest management performance from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2014 by conducting a thorough review of planning documents, annual reports and annual works schedules, and by conducting field inspections of a sample of all operations undertaken in management of the forest.

The Sustainable Forest Licence for the Forest is held by Resolute FP Canada Inc. The Ministry of Natural Resources contributes to management of the Forest by overseeing operations, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, and approving forest management plans, annual work plans and reports.

You are invited to provide input to the audit regarding:

• the overall performance of Resolute and the MNR in managing the forest;

• concerns regarding specific instances or areas in which forest management operations have notfollowed approved plans or provincial regulations;

• concerns regarding specific instances in which operations have not been effective or have been harmful to the environment; or

• specific or general instances in which forest management has been undertaken in an exceptional manner.

The audit does not cover management of other forest units, or other aspects of the performance of MNRor Resolute FP.

All replies received in response to this Invitation must be in writing (paper or digital) and will be treated seriously and may be used to direct the auditors’ attention and activities during the audit. All correspondence received will remain confidential. Responses by mail, fax, or e-mail will be considered.

Please send your comments to Jeremy Williams, the audit team leader:

a Water & Splash

Day last Wednesday afternoon. Fifteen toddlers accompanied by their parents took advantage of the Chamber of Commerce

sponsored event to enjoy a sunny day and games of toss Ring, Frisbies, Slip n’ Slide, Sprinklers, and a Kiddie Pool run by organizer Lana anderson in the park adjacent to the building.

howard Kitchkeesick was there with his wife, their daughter aurora, and her friend Shakira. “I think the travel centre is getting more involved with the community. We have never been here for an event before, though we have lived here for seven years, but both the kids and

ourselves are enjoying the day,” Candace Kitchkeesick said.

anderson commented,

“the afternoon went well. the kids were

happy and everyone enjoyed themselves.”
