Monday June 15, 7:00 p.m. National Orchestra Institute Performs Dvorak

Symphony No. 8-Collington has a strong partnership with the University of

Maryland School of Music through the Artist and Residence program, and many of

you have been subscribers of the National Orchestra Institute over the summers.

This year, due to COVID-19, NOI is broadcasting their events. Tonight, we'll listen

to Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 8 presented by Maryland-native Andrew

Grams and NOI. In his eighth symphony, Dvořák invokes folk Bohemian idioms

filled with earthy tones and bird-like sounds.

Regardless of what you think of him, these are words of wisdom....

*A message from Bill Gates*.

Subject: *What is the Corona/ Covid-19 Virus Really Teaching us?

It is reminding us that this Earth is sick. It is reminding us that we need to look at

the rate of deforestation just as urgently as we look at the speed at which toilet

rolls are disappearing off of shelves. We are sick because our home is sick.

Marketing Committee -The RA Marketing Committee had its inaugural Zoom meeting on June 4 with 25 members attending, and more watching on 972. Two main topics were raised, for further discussion at the Committee’s July meeting.

1. Covid and Future Occupancy: The first was introduced by Cory and Sandy, who outlined the likely effects of the covid crisis on Collington’s short and medium-term occupancy, and their plans to maintain high occupancy. Notably, the staff has been making telephone calls to the most likely prospective residents, to hear how people are feeling about the future and their prior commitments. Many have been fearful about the economic future, but many are clear they want to come visit when it is possible to do so. The Marketing Department is eager for help from the Committee. Specifically, since in-person visits would likely continue to be impossible for several months, Sandy asked for a list of people who would be willing to talk by phone to potential residents about life at Collington. Eight people are already on the list. If you would like to be added, please send an email or call Marian Fuchs at telephone 5093 or [email protected]. We are also looking for one or more volunteers to write a short article about how Collington has been able to keep our population so relatively covid-free over the life of the crisis to date. If you are interested in helping with this project,

please contact either Marian Fuchs or Laurie Nichols at [email protected] or telephone 7316.

2. Helping Newcomers who arrived in 2020 People who came to Collington this year, and especially those who arrived during the covid crisis, have not had the typical welcoming introduction to community life and the usual ways in which newcomers become integrated into our activities. The Committee is working on ideas of how, even belatedly, we can continue to extend a welcome and show newcomers ways to become involved in the life of the community. Work on this is being spearheaded by Ann Davie and Gretta Estey, and if you have ideas on this subject, or want to volunteer to help with any proposed projects, please contact Ann Davie at [email protected] or telephone 7325 or Gretta Estey at [email protected] or telephone 7320 We expect our next meeting to be on Thursday, July 2 at 11:30 am.

SALON will reopen on Monday, June 15th, but with restrictions and limited days

of operation.

• Re-opening is scheduled for June 15 • Initially only Andrea will return, Dee will return in July • Salon will only be open: Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday through the

end of June 9 am to 3 pm • Limited to independent residents only • Appointments must be made, x2226 • Only one resident per stylist at a time • Salon has been cleaned and sanitized by Collington Team • Stylists have cleaned and sanitized all personal equipment

NURSERY DELIVERY TO COLLINGTON-Ecoasis Garden Center in Bowie would very much like to partner with us on a delivery, or deliveries, between June 10-18. They request a $20 minimum per individual order and will add a delivery fee (minimum $5 or 15%) to each bill.

Page 8: The Weekly Courier3 Courier June 15- June 21,2020 MONDAY, June 15th Monday June 15, 7:00 p.m. National Orchestra Institute Performs Dvorak Symphony No. 8-Collington has a strong partnership

8 Courier June 15- June 21,2020

Due to the virus they are very short staffed and will not be able to handle anyone calling their main number. IF THE NURSERY STARTS TO GET CALLS FROM COLLINGTON NEIGHBORS, THEY COULD CANCEL EVERYTHING. The plan they would like us to use is:

• Ecoasis would like me to accumulate names, unit numbers, phone numbers and a preliminary list of what each person may be interested in buying, and email this to them in batches.

• Ecoasis would like to speak individually to everyone interested in ordering. • Ecoasis will call you possibly on the weekend, evenings and slow business

times to discuss colors and varieties, what they have in stock and any additions to what you originally sent me. At that time they will take your credit card payment.

This is not ideal but it is a way to get plants, bushes, supplies, tools, pots, etc. delivered to us. Arrangements have been made with Collington Security and Transportation to have the deliveries deposited in our respective parking lot green spaces for you to retrieve. Neither Kyle Olsen, Collington's team members or Ruppert will be available for transport, planting or upkeep this summer. If you are interested in participating please send me your name, unit number and complete phone number (301-…..) and what you are interested in purchasing from Ecoasis Garden Center via email [email protected] or phone call 301-541-5098. FROM COLLINGTON ARTIST IN RESIDENCE-

Dear Collingtonians,

I'm thrilled to announce my duo Whistling Hens has won a grant to do a virtual

residency at Collington the first two weeks in July. We'll be doing 5 events, and we

need your help.

1) Do you have any momentos that are special to you and have ties to strong

women, feminism, or honor women in some way? We'd love to borrow them for

our Music and Momentos event in which we pair cherished women-centric

momentos with musical selections about fond memories and nostalgia. It could

be photos, letters, household objects - basically anything with a personal story.

9 Courier June 15- June 21,2020

2) Another event is Music and Literature, for which we'd like to pair texts with our

musical texts related to women's rights, American women ca. 1800-1940, women

in China, and more. Do you have old letters, books, poems or short stories that

would be a good fit? We'd love to include any related texts that would be a good

fit for our collaboration. Contact me to read the texts we have planned.

Please contact Natalie Groom at [email protected] or extension x7287 if

you have contributions, ideas, or questions for these 2

or until turf is thoroughly dry. I will continue to come to each residence before we

begin pruning. Just a reminder that if you have a red dot you will not receive

pruning services- you are still required to keep all shrubs, trees, and groundcovers

Creating the New Normal

Life as we knew it will not return anytime soon. So now we must create a new normal for this era of Covid-19. My personal hope is that once a vaccine is available, our old way of living in our community will return and yet be much improved.

I say much improved because I am hopeful that our world will change as people focus on the real societal problems. The in-equality of our citizens is now starkly evident. Much has been said on the Discussion Group about racism in our country.

Here are some ideas from the online discussion group for you to consider:

I would like to suggest what I consider an urgent action for white residents: read the book White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo. Of course, people of all colors are reading and have read this book, and that is fine, but the mes-sage it contains is specifically for white people; what is required for white people to learn to become anti-racist. What is required may not be what you think. It's a huge intellectual project. No better time to start than now. - Sara Case

Another possibility is to volunteer for activities (phone banks, postcard writing, etc.) sponsored by groups working to flip state legislatures to blue. I’m aware of two - Sister District and 31st Street Swing Left - and I’m sure there are others. Laurie Nichols Villepique

Use what you already know. Channel your outrage. Investigate states where you can support sympathetic down-ballot candidates. Support Repairers of the Breach and the Poor People’s Campaign. If you have former neighbors who fall into the “college educated suburban white women who voted against Hilary in

Page 13: The Weekly Courier3 Courier June 15- June 21,2020 MONDAY, June 15th Monday June 15, 7:00 p.m. National Orchestra Institute Performs Dvorak Symphony No. 8-Collington has a strong partnership

2016”, reach out to them to find out where they stand now. Resist when your ac-quaintances and family members and social media friends revise history, as in “The Civil War wasn’t about slavery” or “The Confederate Flag is just a cultural symbol” or “If the cops pulled him over he must have been doing something wrong”. Who knew I was an angry Black woman?

Rita G.

From Lyle Denniston and Pamela Haughton-Denniston, Cottage 2212

A. An invitation to residents to write essays, perhaps of about 250 words, to be published on a continuing basis in The Courier on these themes: “Why black lives matter to me,” or “A black life that matters to me” as a way to discuss a par-ticular person or history in one’s personal life (that could be plural, “Blacks lives that mattered to me”). B. A Black History Discussion Group, with a continuing focus on race-based in-equality in culture, health, policing, law, politics, business opportunity, access to resources, etc. C. A History of Slavery Discussion Group, with emphasis on seeing this history from a black perspective. D. In the existing Foreign Affairs Discussion Group, some focus on United States relations with Africa or the history of Africa. E. With help from Barbara Fairchild, a “book-of-the-month” recommendation on black themes. Perhaps a monthly club discussion of such a book. F. After the pandemic, trips to museums of black history, art and culture, with associated lectures to deepen the meaning of such visits. G. Invitations to local black pastors, periodically, to lead worship services or Bible study. H. A University of Maryland music intern who could provide presentations of music typical of black church services or black composers. I. Invitations to scholars of black history and culture to give a monthly lec-ture. Scholars in those fields could acquaint us with, or deepen our awareness of, the rich “Black and Indigenous People of Color” canon.

We are willing to join in any exploration of such ideas.

From Marilu S.: As to what Collington can do, I have a vision of all of us who can manage the walk standing on Lottsford Road, six feet apart, with signs supporting the pro-testers.

From Lorrie R.: Reform legislation is definitely on the legislature's mind. Here are a couple of links to Maryland Matters articles from the past week.

State Senate https://www.marylandmatters.org/2020/06/04/sen-smith-proposes-sweeping-po-lice-reform-legislation/

State House https://www.marylandmatters.org/2020/05/30/speaker-creates-police-account-ability-workgroup-in-the-house/

State Attorney General https://www.marylandmatters.org/blog/frosh-pushes-congress-to-grant-ags-the-ability-to-probe-unconstitutional-policing/ I see my role as keeping an eye on bills that will be introduced in the 2021 ses-sion and working to support important ones. I have a huge spreadsheet docu-menting races and candidates' positions on key issues.

From Elizabeth G.: While we educate ourselves, we can educate our grandchildren. This link comes from Penguin/Random House so it only promotes their books. But it's a great place to start.

https://www.readbrightly.com/anti-racist-resources-for-kids/?ref=PRH5380D67FE6BF&linkid=PRH5380D67FE6BF&cdi=5326B9D59851E9C5E0534FD66B0A2406&template_id=17060&aid=randohouseinc2767-20

From Sue R.: Bottom line, I believe, is for each of us to take responsibility to educate and grow ourselves.

I look at the world BY LANGSTON HUGHES

I look at the world From awakening eyes in a black face— And this is what I see: This fenced-off narrow space Assigned to me.

I look then at the silly walls Through dark eyes in a dark face— And this is what I know: That all these walls oppression builds Will have to go!

I look at my own body With eyes no longer blind— And I see that my own hands can make The world that’s in my mind. Then let us hurry, comrades, The road to find.
