Municipality refuses water for sport ground in Kellysville

KELLYSVILLE - Criminal charges have been laid against Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) due to its alleged lack of concern for basic human rights.

Children and young adults who enjoy playing soccer in Kellysville don't seem to have this luxury.

TCLM reportedly removed the taps in the street that provided residents with water.

The Mashishing Civic Coalition, under the leadership of Pompies Ledwaba and George Viljoen (chairperson), has been advocating for the basic rights of residents for years. In 2019, it was brought to their attention that the tap at the Kellysville soccer grounds, among others, had allegedly been removed.

This made it nearly impossible for sports events to take place as players did not have access to water. When Viljoen, a Democratic Alliance (DA) member, enquired about this,

the municipality replied by asking who would be paying for the water.

Viljoen drafted a letter to TCLM about this issue on March 12 and handed it in at the municipal offi ces. The complaint has been ignored for months and that resulted in him opening a criminal case against Thaba Chweu at the Lydenburg SAPS on Tuesday November 20. The Kellysville soccer grounds barely have soccer nets and are being used by everyone in the

community. “This is terribly unfair as the Mashakeng

Stadium was refurbished to the amount of R9 million in 2009.

“It has public toilets, showers and infrastructure to make it convenient for sports and other community events. We see this as a violation of our constitutional right. We did not get a response from the municipality, only that it did not want to pay for the water,” said Viljoen.

“Skenk ons ‘n helder Somerkersfees in hierdie land, o’ Heer,” is Koos du Plessis se woorde oor ‘n Kerstyd aan die suidpunt van Afrika. Kersvader het vir Petrus Venter gevra om hom hier te verteenwoordig terwyl hy in die sneeubedekte Europa vir die kinders geskenke vat. Daarom is dit eg aan ons land dat Kersvader sommer op ’n trekker aangery gekom het, en nie op ’n sleë nie. Department of Labour warns about scammers

SEKHUKHUNE - Scammers continue to use different tricks to rob unsuspecting locals in Limpopo.

The Department of Employment and Labour (DEL) has warned people not be taken in by crooks who impersonate departmental offi cials and promise them jobs, or in some cases, claiming they will deal with their Unemployment Insurance Fund issues.

The department was notifi ed of this trend by a client after she had received a call from a certain Mr Modiba, offering speedy assistance with UIF matters and work opportunities in exchange for money.

It revealed to Steelburger/Lydenbrug News that it does not charge for its services.

The complainant notifi ed the department

when "Mr Modiba" insisted that she deposit the money through Money Market.

Deputy director: labour centre operations, Malesela Mothata, said, "Every year when we approach the festive season, we receive an infl ux of complaints from clients about a certain Mr Modiba who is said to work at Polokwane Labour Centre and has scammed

many of their hard-earned cash."

Mothata said they should be alert at all times as scammers are taking advantage of vulnerable clients.

"Our offi cials will never ask clients to deposit money in

exchange of services. We pride ourselves in rendering free services."

The scam is said to have spread to Burgersfort, Jane Furse, Mokopane and nearby areas. Mothata said should clients receive a call from any individual offering services in exchange for money, they must call the department using the fraud hotline 0800-701701.

Another illegal miner is killed at Maatadi

BURGERSFORT - The Mecklenburg SAPS opened an inquest after an illegal miner was killed when a huge rock fell on him while he was manually mining chrome.

The incident happened on Friday at Ga Manyaka, Maatadi section at about 07:00.

The Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said the police were called and on arrival the body was seen trapped under a massive rock.

“The police search and rescue unit and emergency medical services were summoned to the scene and assisted in

retrieving the body. This is after they managed to crush the rock and removed a pile of soil on his body.”

The deceased was identifi ed as Elias Maxon Moyane (23) from Mooihoek

Village. The acting

provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, Maj Gen Jan Scheepers, has warned all community members

to desist from engaging in illegal mining as this is against the law and dangerous.

Scheepers said in the past months the police seized equipment worth more than R10 million from zama zamas and arrested about 50 illegal miners in Tubatse and surroundings.

Police request information from public regarding theft of torched car

LYDENBURG - The local SAPS are investigating a case of vehicle theft and malicious property damage.

Owner Maropeng Rodney Motubatse (37) reported his red VW Golf Velocity stolen on Friday December 11. He said the vehicle had been stolen near a shop in Voortrekker Street opposite the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court at around 19:30.

According to a police report, they were notifi ed on Saturday December 12 at 06:30 that a VW Citi Golf matching the description had been found. However, the

COROMANDEL - A year after Nhlakanipho Khaya Nkosi (6) went missing, new evidence shows that the remains found do not belong to him.

Col Donald Mdluli, Mpumalanga provincial SAPS, issued a statement confi rming this fact.

The Lydenburg SAPS notifi ed the mother that the remains do not belong to her son. However, she said she wanted to have a funeral as this would give her closure.

After he went missing on August 4, 2019, the Coromandel community, Lydenburg SAPS, Lydenburg K9 Unit and Phoenix Security launched a search and rescue to fi nd him.

According to police information, the missing child’s mother, Hesi Nkosi (32), told the police that Nhlakanipho left home to visit Annah Nkosi, his sister, and his grandmother.

A community member, Bongane Maisela, claimed he saw the boy approaching an unknown vehicle where he was given sweets and money. The child then

disappeared without a trace.On August 9, 2019 Steelburger/

Lydenburg News received information that the community was converging next to the alleged suspect’s house, demanding that the child be returned.

Body parts were found on December 22, 2019, but could not be connected to Nhlakanipho.

On January 9, 2020, angry Coromandel residents marched to SAPS Lydenburg’s detective branch to deliver a memorandum of grievances.

The memorandum stated, “Unfair treatment by Lydenburg SAPS. Cases being closed without knowledge of the community and family. The police take time to come when called.”

The SAPS urge anyone with information that can assist in their investigation to either call the Crime Stop number on 08600-10111 or send information via MySAPSApp which can be downloaded to any smartphone.

All information will be treated as confi dential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.

Golf had been set alight. Photos taken on the scene show the extensive damage to the car.

Matubatse was called to the scene and confi rmed his ownership. The vehicle was towed to the police station.

“We appeal to community members who may know the whereabouts of the perpetrators to contact the SAPS so that they can be brought to book,” said Capt Kaizer Moela, communications offi cer of the Lydenburg SAPS.

Anyone with information about the theft, or why the vehicle ended up burned, can contact deputy Col Owen Dibakoane on 082-303-9799.

LYDENBURG - SARS would like to warn taxpayers to be wary of persons posing as tax practitioners or tax experts, who promise them that they can secure a refund from SARS.

Businesses and other organisations must also beware of third parties such as unknown payroll companies who offer to assist them with their PAYE submissions.

SARS is being inundated with desperate calls from honest taxpayers who fall victim to these criminals and scammers who pocket the refunds for themselves and their accomplices, as they often operate as syndicates.

In some cases, these fraudulent submissions are the cause of delays that are experienced by law-abiding taxpayers, when SARS has no other option but to verify the information that was submitted by scammers to SARS.

Taxpayers who willingly participate in such fraudulent activity in expec-tation of an illegal refund will be prosecuted along with the scammers.

SARS urges honest citizens who suspect such criminal activity to provide it with information.

They can contact SARS anonymously using the number 0800-00-2870 or by anonymously completing an online form available on www.sars.gov.za.

Home fire leaves mother dead, partner injured, but daughter is unscathed

BURGERSFORT - Nanikana Tebele (26) burned to death in her home at Ga Madiseng on Sunday at about 11:00.

Her partner also sustained injuries in the fire, while their daughter escaped unscathed.

The police and firefighters were notified about the incident and responded swiftly.

When Steelburger/Lydenburg News arrived at the scene, the house was already engulfed in flames.

After the fire was extinguished, Tebele’s body was removed from the gutted house.

“Preliminary SAPS investigations

revealed that the deceased was in the house with her partner, aged 32, and their eight-year-old daughter when the fire started.

“The child and her father reportedly managed to escape from the burning house, but the victim was apparently trapped inside. The man was rushed to Dilokong Hospital with burn wounds, but the child wasn’t injured,” said Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Brig Motlafelo Mojapelo.

Mojapelo said the cause of fire will be determined by police investigations. He confirmed that an inquest had been opened at the Tubatse SAPS.

Mathabatha appoints new adviserSEKHUKHUNE - The Limpopo

premier, Chupu Mathabatha, has appointed Dr Mohubetswane Alex Mashilo as his special adviser with effect from December 1. This follows the untimely passing of his former one, ambassador Kgosi Mathebe.

According to Mathabatha’s spokesperson, Willy Mosoma, Mashilo’s new advisory role is mainly focused on economic development, communications and stakeholder relations. He will work alongside the entire executive council in helping Mathabatha carry out his constitutional mandate.

“Mashilo’s academic credentials and work experience will come in handy for this

role. He holds a PhD from the University of Witwatersrand. His research focused on economic and social upgrading in global production networks. He also holds a master of arts from Wits University in labour policy and globalisation,” said Mosoma.

In addition to his impeccable academic qualifi cations and work experience in the global manufacturing industry, he is a seasoned communications practitioner and policy development advocacy activist with a background in the working-class movement.

Reduce your risk through screeningLYDENBURG - It is of great concern that

the number of men being diagnosed with late stage cancer is on the rise.

Recently, locals have been given the opportunity to be screened through CANSA mobile clinics at no cost.

The organisation shines the spotlight on prostate cancer, the most common male cancer globally and locally, and it shows a signifi cant increase.

Speaking to Steelburger/Lydenburg News, Ramphosi Shawe, community mobiliser, said they recently saw a total of 20 people. Fifteen males underwent prostate specifi c antigen (PSA) tests and fi ve females had breast exams. One breast abnormality was detected.

Cancer is a large group of diseases that can start in almost any organ or tissue of the body when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably, go beyond their usual boundaries to invade adjoining parts of the body and/or spread to other organs. The latter process is called metastasising and is a major cause of death. A neoplasm and malignant tumour are other common names for cancer. This disease is the second leading cause of death globally, accounting for an estimated 9,6 million deaths, or one in six, in 2018.

Lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach and liver cancer are the most common types in men, while breast, colorectal, lung, cervical and thyroid are the most common among women. The scourge continues to grow globally, exerting tremendous physical, emotional and fi nancial strain on individuals, families, communities and health systems.

Many health systems in low- and middle-income countries are least prepared to manage this, and large numbers of patients globally do not have access to timely quality diagnosis and treatment. In countries where they are strong, survival rates of many types of cancers are improving thanks to accessible early detection, quality treatment and survivorship care.

According to the National Cancer Registry, South African men have a 1:17 risk of being diagnosed in their lifetime. International and local research indicates that the risk for aggressive prostate cancer is higher in black men and there are about 1,38 million new cases and 458 000 deaths from breast cancer each year, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC Globocan, 2008).

CANSA said men need to be proactive about their health and should recognise warning signs. They are encouraged to do monthly testicular self-examinations, attend annual medical check-ups and cancer screening for early detection, as symptoms do not always present until the disease has

spread. Men also need to lead a balanced lifestyle, cutting out factors that increase their risk.

“The most common risk factors include African ancestry, increasing age from 50s onwards and a family history on either the mother or father’s side. It might be that prostate cancer grows more rapidly in black men than in white men and that the transformation from latent to aggressive might occur earlier in black men.

“The numbers reported for it in South Africa are likely an underestimate of the real statistics. Annual PSA testing is essential to help detect prostate cancer early, through a simple blood test. This is currently not routinely measured in men presenting at public hospitals,” said Shawe.

Currently there is not suffi cient knowledge regarding the causes of breast cancer. Early detection remains the cornerstone of controlling it. When it is detected early, and if adequate diagnosis and treatment are

available, there is a good chance that it can be cured. If detected late, however, curative treatment is often no longer an option. In such cases, palliative care to relieve the suffering of patients

and their families is needed. The majority of deaths (269 000) occur in

low- and middle-income countries, where most women are diagnosed in late stages mainly due to lack of awareness on early detection and barriers to health services; a situation that can be reverted if adequate public health programmes are put in place.

The World Health Organisation promotes comprehensive breast cancer control programmes as part of national cancer control plans. The recommended early detection strategies for low- and middle-income countries are awareness of early signs and symptoms and screening by clinical breast examination in demonstration areas. Mammography screening is very costly and is feasible only in countries with good health infrastructure that can afford a long-term programme.

Sowing the seeds for a greener future for pupils

MASHISHING - Food and Trees for Africa and Konica Minolta Nelspruit planted trees at Marambane Primary School.

This took place last Friday. About 920 exotic, indigenous and fruit trees were distributed through the Mbombela and Lydenburg/Mashishing areas as part of the greening and carbon neutral initiative.

The trees were distributed and planted at Marifaan, Lesodi, Sizwe, Kellysville and Lydenburg primary schools, as well as Mashishing and Skhila secondary schools.

The principal of Marambane, Didi Masinga, thanked Food and Trees for Africa and Konica Minolta Nelspruit for the trees and educating their learners about their importance and benefi ts.

The project was done as a display of gratitude for Nelson Mandela’s passion for the youth and education in South Africa.

This particular tree-planting initiative has been running for the past 13 years and has seen 50 001 trees donated across Mpumalanga.

Many recent studies have demonstrated how planting

trees positively affects living spaces and learning outcomes.

One study found that learners in a green environment, even if this is only viewed from a window, have lower stress levels and better attention spans.

Another pointed to improved academic performance. Simply being in a greener environment can boost learners’ memory levels, researchers discovered.

Green spaces also improve chances for social interaction, allowing pupils to better communicate with peers and teachers, and connect with nature.

With 50 001 trees, Konica Minolta Nelspruit has impacted 1 037 benefi ciary organisations, 985 of which are schools. At each planting, learners, teachers and community members learned about caring for trees and protecting the environment.

A whopping 98 per cent of studies highlight the positive impact of environmental education on learners. One notable result is increased participation and engagement and thus, improved performance in schoolwork. Green spaces also create opportunities for hands-on outdoor learning, that can inspire learners to become eco-stewards.

Lesedisedi pupils graduateMECKLENBURG - Kids danced

their way to primary school as they were cheered on by their teachers, siblings, parents and community. This happened at Lesedisedi Primary School in Moroke on Saturday. More than 40 children completed their preparatory early childhood and development learning under the guidance of the founder, Pel Moloto, and his teaching personnel.

The schoolkids rendered several extramural activities that included poems, singing, dancing and other acts.

Speaking during the ceremony, Moloto said he had established the school to assist and pave way for a better future for the little ones.

“The school has been running for the past 23 years. We offer the best education for

our kids. We also plan on opening another branch closer to Burgersfort.”

Lesedisedi caters for more than 60 children from six months to six years through nutritious meals, mental and physical development in readiness for further education and other life challenges. After school, they are engaged in aerobics and supervised on homework. The school offers grades R to seven classes.

Moloto said the graduating children had excelled and were ready for grade one.

One of them, Princess Sekhukhune, who wants to be an engineer, said she is ready for big school. The crèche helped to polish her readiness. Their send-off was fun and befitted the festive mood.

They received their graduation certificates, danced to wild ululation from the crowd and, with the others, received presents and had a sumptuous meal.

Barcelona win Top-16 tournamentBarcelona came from a goal

down to win the Mabocha Top-16 tournament.

The games were played at Ga Sehloi on Sunday.

The team from Shakung defeated Ga Makofane’s Lockdown FC 4-2 on penalties. The two teams were deadlocked 1-1 after 90 minutes of play.

Lockdown created several opportunities in the fi rst half, but poor fi nishing was their downfall.

In the second half Barcelona came out guns blazing, pushing for an equaliser.

With 10 minutes remaining before the fi nal whistle, the Shakung side were rewarded when an interchange of passes resulted in Philmon Mosehla

striking a fi erce shot to equalise. In the closing minutes of the

encounter both teams pushed for a winning goal, without any luck. It was left to the dreaded penalties to determine the winner. Barcelona was accurate with their spot kicks.

They converted four of their penalties while Lockdown missed two of their penalties.

Barcelona coach, Joseph Tselane, said his team deserved to win the fi nal.

“We played well from the start of the tournament. I think we were unlucky not to win in the 90 minutes of play. We are grateful for this win and we will continue participating in the tournaments of this magnitude.”

For winning the tournament, Barcelona took home a whopping R7 000 prize.
