Working hard Each year, students volunteer to whitewash the massive “K” and “S” letters overlooking Manhattan. Engineering students constructed the two letters that gave KS Hill its name in 1921, but never added the “U.”

Playing hard Aggieville is peppered with local shops, restaurants and entertainment across six lively blocks near campus. The area has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a laundromat in 1889.

The sweet life Generations of K-Staters have satisfied their sweet tooth at the Call Hall dairy bar. Made by students, the ice cream comes in 30-some flavors including the campus favorite — purple pride.

A FAMILY BUILT ON TRADITION. DISCOVER THE #WILDCATWAY

You’ll always remember the feel of limestone on your fingers, the taste of Call Hall ice cream in the spring, and the sound of 50,000 Wildcat fans cheering in unison. These special traditions and more are still waiting for you, and we can’t wait for you to soak up every second, starting now.

Spirit When the band starts playing Wabash Cannonball, students instantly find themselves twisting, bobbing and clapping to this well-known K-State anthem. It was the only music saved after a music department fire in the 1960s, and it continues to tell the tale of Wildcat resilience.

Traditions last a lifetime

Once you join the family, the traditions are yours to cherish. See more at k-state.edu/about/history-traditions

Welcoming Each April, thousands of visitors visit campus for Open House, a universitywide event that showcases everything K-State has to offer. It’s a great way to check out all the new buildings and activity on campus!

Loyalty K-Staters look out for each other, and the student-led, nationally recognized K-State Proud fundraising campaign is living proof. In 10 years, the campaign has raised more than $1 million for students in need.

Pride Our fearless mascot, Willie the Wildcat, inspires excitement and enthusiasm with his famous K-S-U pose and football game pushups. K-Staters are proud of Willie’s tireless energy and purple passion.

Connecting Each year Manhattan erupts with food, fireworks and festivities for Purple Power Play, a citywide pep rally held before the season’s football home opener. More than 20,000 students, alumni and fans join together to paint the town purple.

“K-State stands out because it’s so much more than what goes on in the classroom. It’s career preparation, internships, involvement — whatever you want. It’s a small-town atmosphere with all the benefits of a big school.”

— Jordan Kiehl, sophomore | Kansas City, KS

Jordan KiehlSophomore in industrial engineering, minors in business and mass communicationsKansas City, KS

Dakota BaccusJunior in political scienceMinneapolis, KS

Coming from a small town, Dakota Baccus knew that a caring, supportive atmosphere was one of the keys to success. He found that at K-State, where he doesn’t feel like just a number. Dakota hopes to eventually attend law school and enter the world of politics, and his experience in the mock trial team is preparing him for the flow and environment he can expect in a courtroom. No matter where he ends up, Dakota knows the K-State family will have his back.

Jordan Kiehl’s parents were both K-State alums, so she was initially a little hesitant to attend her “parents’ school.” However, as she continued visiting, she discovered K-State had everything she wanted in a school. It quickly became more than a family legacy. It became her own K-State family experience. Jordan loves K-State because it’s not only an education but preparation for her future.

Kelly Wilkerson grew up accompanying her sister to speech therapy and found she had an interest in it that extended far beyond her own family. As a communication sciences and disorders student, she loves learning about how to help people improve their lives, while also enjoying her time in various K-State activities, including Quest Freshman Honorary.

“I love that my classes don’t feel like I’m just reading out of a textbook. My political science classes tie in with a lot of current events, and my professors find ways to apply what we’re learning to real life.”

“Being on campus, you get the sense that all the activity is student driven — the administration takes time to listen. K-State really is for everyone.”

“I visited another school, and one of the professors actually recommended I check out K-State for my major. I figured that was a pretty great endorsement.”

STUDENT STORIES

Paloma RomanJunior in public relationsGarden City, KS

Bailey PorterJunior in biochemistry, minors in anthropology and leadership studiesOverland Park, KS

Abby BakerJunior in interior architectureSt. Louis, MO

As an architecture major, Abby Baker spends a lot of time in studio working on projects. When she was a freshman she relied on the department’s peer educators for guidance and support, and she’s happy to now return the favor. Abby enjoys working with freshmen in their studios, giving advice and helping them feel comfortable in their new surroundings.

Paloma Roman wanted to continue her long-standing tradition of high school involvement once she got to college, especially leadership and networking roles. When she went through Wildcat Warm-up as an incoming freshman, she knew she wanted to pass that experience along to others. Now, as a Wildcat Warm-up ambassador, Paloma gets to share her love for K-State while welcoming students into the K-State family.

Right away, Bailey Porter knew he wanted his K-State experience to include research. When a biochemistry professor needed a new undergraduate assistant, he happily accepted the job. Today, Bailey is helping research a yeast genome and ancestral gene reconstruction — a great blend of his interest, as well as a stepping stone for his goal of becoming a pediatrician.

“The first time I visited K-State, I just knew it was the one. It felt right, and it was the best decision I could have made.”

“My favorite spots on campus are Anderson Hall and the beautiful new Welcome Center. Anderson Hall has so much history, and I love that I get to help new students get acclimated to university life.”

“Even though I switched majors a couple of times, I always felt supported while I figured out what I wanted to do. Now, I work at the Career Center, where I can help students wade through that same process and be a good resource for them. It’s full circle.”
