UNB Saint John’s Students Transitioning for Academic Readiness (STAR) program is designed for students who want to attend university but might not meet entrance requirements. The STAR program provides students with an introduction to university-level studies while also offering help with effective study and classroom skills as well as test taking. Curriculum is based on UNB Saint John’s Certificate in General Studies.

With three faculties and 2500 students from 38 countries, the University of New Brunswick – Saint John campus is the perfect fit. We’re big enough to offer a diversity of programs and courses, and small enough to give our students the personal attention they deserve.

As part of the UNB family, we are connected to an academic legacy 225 years in the making, and in 2014 we’ll be celebrating 50 years of academic exellence here in the Port City.

We leverage our heritage while looking to the future – building a reputation for leading-edge approaches to patient-centred health care, and for interdisciplinary research that is having a positive impact on our region and our nation.

Our blended pedigree has allowed us to stand on the shoulders of giants and build a campus community that fearlessly approaches today’s problems in new and innovative ways.

we know you – and you know us – by name, because community building just comes naturally to us.

We think these are the ingredients of positive change and a foundation on which great things are built.

We can’t wait to see what you’ll do.

Find your place in the port city For more than 225 years, the city of Saint John has attracted travellers and immigrants from distant places, and acted as a magnet for craftspeople and businesses of all kinds.

Today we are a blend of First Nations, Acadian French and American Loyalist cultures – and our business network is a healthy mix of heavy industry and creative-culture startups.

We are rich in historic architecture and full of new ideas, and we are ready to welcome you like family.

We’ve got bike paths, transit, oceanside walking trails and beaches.

There are galleries and boutiques, and Canada’s oldest continuous farmer’s market – a place that has its finger on the pulse of just about everything.

Oh, and then there’s the hockey: everything from in-town pond-hockey tournaments to a Q-league team that makes the NHL sit up and take notice.

From live music and wine bars to fine dining and dance clubs – we’ve got them all, and because we’re just the right size kind of town, chances are you’ll know somebody wherever you end up.

Join us in Tucker park Our campus was established in 1964 – and at the time students attended classes in all sorts of odd places in the uptown Saint John area. In 1969 we made the move to Tucker Park in the North end of the city, and we’ve been reinventing our space overlooking the Kennebecasis River ever since. In fact, $1.1M has been invested in classroom rejuvenation projects since 2010.

Meet our FacultyOur 125 faculty members are a diverse group.

They light up our classrooms – and when they’re not doing that, they’re building partnerships with other institutions and businesses around town; they’re volunteering their time to sit on boards and support not-for-profits; and they’re conducting research into everything from web-based semantic search tools to electoral behaviour.

With three Canada Research Chairs, more than 15 research groups, and more than $5.73 million in sponsored research funding – our reputation as a national-calibre thought leader is growing. In fact, we’ve seen a 69% increase in research funding on our campus over the last fiscal year alone.

Dr. bruce MacDonald Associate Dean of Graduate Studies Professor of Biology

Dr. MacDonald’s area of specialization is how marine invertebrates such as clams, mussels, snails and scallops are equipped to feed, grow and survive in their natural habitats, and when faced with natural and man-made environ mental challenges. He is also involved in an aquaculture research project assessing the potential for including other invertebrate species into salmon farms – adding another species for sale while taking advantage of their ability to act as biofilters to remove some of the excess waste particles from the environment.

Dr. Sandra bell Professor, Faculty of Arts Chair of Department of Humanities and Languages

Apart from a full teaching schedule, Dr. Bell runs two courses in partnership with the Saint John Theatre Company. Drama Production gives students the chance to work backstage on mainstage production at Saint John’s historic Imperial Theatre. Script Into Performance asks students to look at plays taught in high schools in the region, and then develop scenes for performance at these schools. These courses are connecting our students with the artistic community in Saint John, giving them a hands-on experience completely outside the classroom.

Dr. Shelley M. rinehart Professor, Faculty of Business Deputy Mayor, City of Saint John

Until she took a secondment position as Director of Strategic Policy and Planning for the Department of Energy, Dr. Rinehart didn’t think she would be interested in politics. Her next step was a successful run for Saint John City Council, winning her the seat of Deputy Mayor with more than 6,000 votes. And she does all that while maintaining a full teaching schedule. Her research focus these days? Political communication and marketing.

Financial aid

Our financial aid advisors can help you design a budget and then, if needed, provide advice on applying for financial aid or on-campus employment to help you cover expenses.

On-campus employment options

Our Student Employment Centre helps students and recent graduates secure permanent, summer or part-time employment. Scholarships and bursaries

Almost $3 million in scholarships and bursaries is available to UNB Saint John students, including UNB’s most lucrative scholarships: the Currie Undergraduate Scholarhip ($50,000 over 4 years), the Schulich Leader Scholarship ($60,000 over 4 years), the Harrison McCain Bursary ($13,500 over 4 years), the Beaverbrook Scholars Award ($44,000 over 4 years) and the Primrose Scholarship ($5,000).

applying for scholarships and bursaries

With the exception of the four scholarships/bursaries listed below, incoming students apply for all scholarships using the general application form available at www.unb.ca/scholarships. This form is due by March 1 of each year.

Our awards committee will determine which scholarships you are eligible for, based on the information you supply on your application form. One of the most important criteria is your scholarship average. Your scholarship average is based on the admissions average (the average of the six courses required for admission) plus bonus points for enriched courses. For the list of courses we use in calculating your scholarship average, please refer to the Admission Requirements section, starting on page 38.

Please note: five UNB scholarships have specific deadlines and require separate application forms. These are available at www.unb.ca/scholarships/highschool.html.
