MEET LUCAS ANDERSON

I am from Stoney Creek, Ontario. I spent several years

travelling and amongst my travels I fell in love with

Vancouver Island. While researching universities, I

couldn't help but notice one called Vancouver Island

University. After living internationally for five years

and travelling across North America for two, Vancouver

Island is one of the most beautiful places I have ever

experienced. After being nomadic for so long, I have

fallen in love with Nanaimo. This land is a part of what

makes studying at the university so beautiful.

Welcome. Situated on the traditional land of the Coast Salish peoples, VIU is fortunate to host a large number of Aboriginal students who are enrolled in a wide variety of programs and courses. We recognize that our students represent many different nations and cultures and come to our institution with a rich and unique traditional knowledge base. It is our hope to create a sense of belonging in post-secondary education for everyone. VIU is a place where history and traditions are acknowledged, where contributions are valued and where success is celebrated.

ELDERS AT VIUOur Elders (pictured below) are one of our most valuable resources. They provide counselling support and guidance to all students at VIU. You will often hear the students referring to the Elders as Auntie or Uncle, which is a sign of both affection and respect. VIU Elders are also involved in classroom instruction, teaching traditional protocols and cross-cultural sharing.

Admission RequirementsVIU offers a wide variety of academic and trades programs. Details of admission requirements for each program are summarized in the following pages and additional details can be found on pages 33-35. VIU has provisions for mature student admission and also offers high school equivalencies if you need to upgrade.

Program Start Dates and Application DeadlinesAlthough most of our academic and trades programs begin in September, there are many opportunities to begin studies in January, May or throughout the year. Applications for programs that begin in September are generally accepted from October 2 until March 31. Transcripts and other supporting documents must be received by the application deadline. Program start dates and application deadlines for each program are noted in the program details of our online calendar.

Most programs are available at VIU’s Nanaimo campus; however, they may not be available at the regional campuses – Cowichan, Powell River and Parksville•Qualicum. For program locations, please consult our online calendar at viu.ca/calendar.

Not sure? Try Exploratory University StudiesExploratory University Studies (EXPO) is an opportunity for you to take university credit courses while exploring your options further. Perhaps you’ve got your eye on a program that has some first-year courses as prerequisites, or maybe you just aren’t sure if you want to get your degree in Arts, Business, Science or something else. EXPO gives you the opportunity to get in the door, and it gives us the chance to reach out to help you find your true pathway. As an EXPO student, you will need to meet general university admission requirements and satisfy all course prerequisites. While there are some advantages to being in a specific degree, diploma or certificate program, EXPO might be the best choice for you if your plans are uncertain or if you’re upgrading to qualify for your true goal.

Gather together all the necessary documentation This could include official transcripts from your secondary school. If you are currently attending a BC secondary school, letting us know your Personal Education Number (PEN) will assist us to obtain your final grades; some programs will require that you submit an interim transcript separately. You should also submit transcripts from any other post-secondary institutions you have attended and you may be required to write an assessment test, submit a personal profile, a résumé or a letter of intent.

General Admission Requirements for University and Career/ Technical ProgramsApplicants are eligible for admission to University and Career/Technical programs if they meet at least one of the following conditions:

• Graduation from a BC secondary school, or equivalent, with a minimum “C” grade in English 12.

• Equivalencies for English 12 are: English 12 First Peoples; VIU’s ENGL 067; the ACCUPLACER Language Proficiency Index with acceptable scores. See pages 30-31 for provincial equivalencies. See viu.ca/calendar;

• Previous degree from a recognized university; • Visiting student from a college or university (a “Letter of

Permission” from the home institution is required); • Transfer student from a college or university (at least 24

transferable university-level credits completed); • Academic mature student category—at least 21 years of age

(or will turn 21 in the first semester of admission) and have a minimum “C” grade in English 12.

General Admission Requirements for Unclassified StudentsStudents who do not meet any of the above admission categories may be admitted as an “Unclassified Student” to register for university-level classes where they meet the prerequisite(s). Unclassified students will register after all other University program students, so course availability will be limited. Unclassified students are not considered to have been admitted to a university degree or diploma program.

Applicants are eligible for admission as an unclassified student if they meet one of the following conditions:

• Graduation from a BC secondary school, or equivalent from another school system;

• Unclassified mature student category (19 years of age or older, or who will become 19 during their first semester).

General Admission Requirements for Trades & Applied Technology Programs

• Graduation from a BC secondary school, or equivalent from another school system;

FIELD SCHOOLS

Ranging in length from 10 days to 5 weeks, field schools offer students the opportunity to travel as part of a group under the leadership of VIU faculty members. Students participate in scheduled activities, tours, assignments and project work in the host location and earn between 3 and 9 credits for their studies.

My professors took the time to get to know me on

know that they would do anything in their power

Before I really knew anybody in

my program, the fifth floor of

the library, around the corner in

front of all the windows, used

to be my favourite study spot...

Now that I do know people in

geography, the map room is by

far my favourite place. Not only

is it oozing with geography,

but you can often find friends

there... and the profs will often

stop by to see if anybody is

studying or needs help.

I came to VIU as a mature student who transferred

from North Island College, and even though I

knew I was a bit older and a stranger to Nanaimo,

I knew that I mattered. I received nothing but

support and encouragement from the staff and

faculty in the Anthropology department.

I came to Nanaimo from Charlottetown, PEI. I love island life and wanted to see

what the West Coast had to offer. I’ve got to say, I’m definitely not disappointed by

these “winters”.

VIU is a small school with plenty of opportunities to connect. Outside of classes

I have facilitated a club for three years and have had the chance to plan events

and campaigns, sit on committees, and really make my ideas heard. At VIU, it feels

like a lot of doors are open for students — be it the Dean’s, my professors’, or the

Students' Union. I know that when I show up with ideas that I’m working with I will

be heard and respected.
