…’The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying: Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God; let it be deep as the netherworld, or high as the sky! But Ahaz answered “I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!” Then Isaiah said: Listen, O house of David! Is it not enough for you to weary people, must you also weary my God? There-fore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.” The Gospel, on this Fourth Sunday of Advent, both challenges us and gives us every reason for our hope. The challenge is to use these days to be attentive and observant of the signs of God’s presence and activity in your life. Amid all the lights - and sounds - and activities of these days observe faithful presence of God. In so do-ing, your heart will be filled with great joy for Emmanuel – God is with us. That’s our hope – God is always with us. Use this final week of Advent to be most attentive of the presence and promise of the Lord.

…This past Tuesday, as we started our Pas-toral Council meeting, the members spent some time reflecting on the signs of God’s presence in our community. Rachel Russo, a high school student, spoke passionately about the amazing response to our Advent Giving Tree efforts. She both observed that the tags on the tree represent the ‘needs’ by so many in our community and the packages returned, for those in need, are a sign of the goodness of our community. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and support. God bless the Catholic Works of Mercy Team who is doing great work on behalf of our com-munity. They are truly and the hands and feet of the Lord.

...Other members of the PPC spoke about the blessing of our first Advent Tea – it was a beautiful gathering of 200 of our mem-bers who shared friendship and faith. It was a perfect way to set a peaceful tone for the Christmas Season. Others shared how much they were ‘blessed’ by the Matt Maher Con-cert last Sunday. The signs of God’s pres-ence are all around us.

…Another ‘sign’ of God’s activity is in our 12 Days of Christmas Program. Members are sharing joy, faith and little gifts for these 12 days before Christmas with about 40 of our members. Those involved have been nomi-nated by one of our members who want to share a perfect gift of God’s love and care. Here’s one of the dialogues that took place between one of the recipients and one of the ELVES who was sharing Christmas joy: “Why am I a recipient of 12 Days of Christ-

mas? I’m not homeless. I’m sure there’s some-one else who needs/deserves this more than I do.” I told her that I don’t know why she was nominated but that someone nominated her. God sent this person to think of her. She said “Oh my gosh, now you’re making me cry. Thank you for making me see why.” The 12 Days of Christmas is really a way of keep-ing all of us focused on the real reason for Christmas. How can each of us be a sign of God’s presence and light and joy to others?

...The Pastoral Council has a number of goals for the year, two of which converge together this coming week. They want to make sure “everyone feels welcome” and “engage people who join us on Christmas.” A simple idea for all of us – on Christmas Eve/Day, let’s all welcome everyone around us as we come in and take our seat, and wish each other a joy-ous and blessed Christmas as we leave. That simple spirit of welcome and hospitality can be the ‘spark’ that will encourage some-one to join us more often and always at Saint Ambrose. Thank you.

...Speaking of Christmas, our Worship Com-mission, along with lots of other wonderful people, are working hard to make sure the Church looks beautiful, our campus is clean and safe and all of our Masses are well-planned and inspiring. Please hold all who help us pray at Christmas and always in your prayers. Today’s bulletin contains a special insert list-ing all the Liturgical Ministers for Christmas (you’ll be surprised at how many people are involved). It’s a good opportunity to pray for them and thank them for their service as we gather at the Table of the Lord.

...We are very blessed to have some off-duty officers to help us make sure everyone en-ters and exits safely from our campus on Christmas Eve. Please thank them for their extra service and cooperate with them as they help guide all the cars safely.

...I know this may take away some of the ‘sur-prise’ of your Christmas gift, however, look for your Parish Calendar on Christmas Day (and the weekend after). They will be at the doors of the Church. The calendar is filled with beautiful images, inspiring quotes and timely information about our parish com-munity. It will help you let the Light of Christ shine every day and always. The calendar is a gift to us from our Community Partners who are so helpful and supportive of our parish community. You can also see a digital version of the calendar online at www.StAm-brose.us/2017.

...Many thanks to all who supported our Christmas Flower collection. Your support helps make it possible for us to have a beauti-ful Church, this Christmas and always. Special thanks to Linda, Lynn, Kathy and Helen for leading the charge on Church decorating. They could really use your help this week on Thursday, December 22. Many hands make for light work...a clean and beautifully deco-rated Church and Hall.

...This past week the students from Saint Am-brose School and I did a special Christmas Tree blessing for all the decorated trees on Pearl Road. The service was topped off by some wonderful hot chocolate. We sent all our students home with a Christmas Tree blessing to share with their family. I also put the prayer on our website so you can pray it with your family – www.StAmbrose.us/TreeBlessing.

…Speaking of our students, make sure to bring the whole family to our annual Spaghetti Din-ner on Saturday, January 7, from 5:30-8:30 pm. Proceeds raised from this great event will help support our school’s 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C., as well FIAT’s trip to the March for Life next month. Tickets--$8 for adults 12+ and $4 for kids 11 and under—are presale only. Swing by the PLC after Mass this weekend to grab yours. Great food. Great company. Great cause.

...Although Christmas is quickly coming up, please remember that we will celebrate the Solemnity of Mary on the following week-end (12/31 and 1/1). It’s both New Year’s and the weekend. It’s a great way to help you and your loved ones get a great start on the New Year by gathering together as a fam-ily in prayer. Families that pray together...are strengthened by God’s grace...to stay together. Masses on that weekend are at 4:30 pm and 6:00 pm on Saturday and 7:30 am, 9:00 am, 10:30 am and 12:00 pm on Sunday. There will NOT be a 5:00 pm Mass.

…In these final days before Christmas….thank you for all you do for our parish. Your support…the gift you continue to give to the work of the Lord….allows us to do so much good for our members and for those in need. You and your loved ones are in my prayers this Christmas and always. God bless you.

Children and Teen Envelopes Our Young People’s Incredible GiftsEvery week, our young people contribute to Saint Ambrose–not only through monetary gifts, but through their actions. Here are some of the ways our kids have been Christ in our community:

• “I read to my family.” • “I colored a picture for my cousin.” • “I helped my mom do the dishes.”

Thank you for your support for our parish community. With Christmas on Sunday, please consider a generous gift to Saint Ambrose this Christmas and/or remember

your regularly weekly offering.

Bingo LingoJoin Us Friday, December 30

Because of the Christmas holiday, we will not have Bingo this Friday, December 23. Merry Christmas to all of our wonderful Bingo

players and volunteers. We’ll see you on the 30th for our New Year’s Eve Bingo Bash. In addition to our normal great prizes, we’re giving away a new TV. Doors open at 5:00 pm, with the games starting at 7:00 pm. Contact Lynn Rogers at [email protected] for more information.

Coping with the loss of a loved one can be extremely difficult, especially during the holidays. While we all mourn in our own ways, for many of us, having a support system is extremely important.

We warmly welcome you to attend Griefshare if your heart is heavy with the memory of someone you love. You are most certainly welcome to return if you started but didn’t complete the entire series, as well. This Christ-centered program of DVDs provides key information to help you understand the “normalcy” of this unwelcomed experience and the opportunity to talk or simply listen to others on this path. This is not a sad evening filled with tears, but rather one of memories and smiles. It is a night of understanding the experience of grief and learning how healing can begin.

Our next series will begin on Wednesday, January 11 in the Fr. McGivney Room, but you can come by at any time. Please contact us in advance of your first session so that we have a care book ready for you. Start on week #1, or anytime, by contacting Terri Bartchak at 216.973.6784 or [email protected].

Advent – Prepare the WayFinal Night: December 23

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas,” or, at least that’s the assumption based on that familiar holiday song. But what does that look like at your house? Most of us anticipate the

great sales at the mall on the day after Thanksgiving, string lights on the outside of our houses and decorate inside of our homes. But how exactly are we preparing our hearts for the greatest gift we’ve ever been given?

Through an exploration of the mystery of the Incarnation, the Virgin Birth and the events surrounding the arrival of Jesus, this Advent study offers an opportunity to experience the joy of the true meaning of Christmas. We will meet for our last session on Friday, December 23 at 6:30 pm in the Lehner Center Fr. McGivney room. Haven’t been able to make it until now? No problem – the night is perfect for old and few faces alike. To register, contact Jane Baldwin at 330.460.7381 or [email protected].

Music Bingo for SeniorsSaturday, January 14It’s official: Music Bingo is coming to start the New Year off from 11:30 am-1:00 pm in Mother Teresa Room with DJ Kenny. Come and listen to the DJ, have fun and shuffle your feet to the beat of old time songs. Consider joining us and enjoy a lite lunch and conversation with friends. RSVP to Helen Sheridan at 330.460.7322 no later than January 10.

in the PLC John Paul II room. Our Ten Minute Teaching includes discussion and a video that explore the readings from Mass in greater detail. We hope you can come. Come right to the teaching – we will have donuts and coffee ready for you so there is no need to wait in the long donut line.

Oplatki Wafers Now AvailableA Great Christmas Tradition

Oplatki Christmas wafers will be available in the main vestibule after our weekend Masses during Advent. Meaning

“Angel Bread,” Oplatki wafers are a tradition in many Polish, Slovak and Lithuanian families, symbolizing God’s charity. No matter what your heritage is, you are welcome to join in on this Christmas tradition.

Heavenly AngelsSome Extra Hands Needed on December 22Heavenly Angels is a ministry committed to cleaning the church twice a month. There are various jobs that are included in the cleaning. If you enjoy cleaning or are looking for some way to be helpful, come check us out. With Christmas coming, we need some extra hands to clean on December 22, from 2:30-4:00 pm. SAINT AMBROSE CHRISTMAS 2016

Small Group Faith SharingInfo Meeting on Thursday, December 29We are blessed with an incredibly large parish, with over 15,000 members and 5,000 families. In communities this large, it may be difficult not to feel lost in the shuffle. At Saint Ambrose, we pride ourselves on making sure YOU are given the care and attention you need. One of the many ways we accomplish this is through Small Faith Sharing Groups in homes. Launched in the fall, many of our parishioners have opened their homes to host nights of reflection, classes, prayer groups...you name it, we do it. Now that we’ve gotten a strong hold on the ground level, we are looking to expand.

During this upcoming Lenten Season (and yes, we know we’re in Advent right now – time flies), we are looking for families/individuals who want to offer programs in their homes or individuals who want to participate in these groups. In just 10 hours you can open up your home, sponsor and facilitate a weekly session. We have all of the resources. To learn more, come to an informational session on December 29 at 10:00 am or 6:30 pm in the Mother Teresa Room.

Rite of Enrollment for First Eucharist The Rite of Enrollment for First Eucharist will be January 8 at the 9:00 am,10:30 am and noon Masses. This ceremony marks the beginning of a “journey of faith” for children, and their parents, who are starting the sacramental formation process for First Eucharist. It is also a sign to the larger community that all of us have a role in the formation of everyone in the parish, especially those preparing to receive a sacrament. Likewise, it affirms to your child and your family that they are part of the larger faith community. The members of the parish community provide prayer and support for the children, their families, and their catechists throughout the formation period.

PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION

PSRSaint Ambrose Catholic SchoolA Note from Lisa Cinadr

Dear Parents and Friends,

We are one week from Christmas and so look forward to celebrating the birth of our Savior! We’ve been blessed this year, every day, with the little discoveries and successes of our students. Real learning happens here every day. We now have

MAP assessments that provide real data teachers use immediately to help students learn and master the curriculum. Intervention services are stronger and continue to grow to provide the best teaching and support for every learner. The Bridge (grades 4-5) and HSP (grades 6-8) students are learning to navigate the tough years of adolescence through the lens of Jesus Christ with their school family members. All this and more; BIG and critical work is being accomplished by talented and earnest teachers who challenge and support each student as he/she learns in developing individual gifts and talents.

On December 5, our students had the privilege of participating in an extended version of the national “Hour of Code.” Our event included Joseph Kolecki, retired NASA physicist and electrical engineer who discussed water and ice on the moon and planets; Tom Hammond, Computer Specialist at the University of Akron who discussed 3D printing and its uses; and Bob Gillingham of Gillingham Ford whose family donated the funds for our much needed and used “DLL”, our Distance Learning Lab. Our Sixth Grade students thanked Mr. Gillingham and his family for their generous gift and then presented digital artwork ideas to him. Mr. Gillingham and his family will select the design we will use as signage for our Distance Learning Lab.

May these last few days before Christmas find you filled with the peace and joy of Christ.

Blessings,

“’Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,’ which means ‘God

is with us.’” – Matthew 1:23

In this weekend’s Gospel, we’re reminded of the true reason we celebrate Christmas – the birth of Christ. This line from the Gospel of Matthew directs our attention to the fact that not only did Jesus come into our lives that night in a manger – but that each and every day, God is with us and wants to walk with us as we journey through life.

Even in the darkest, most difficult moments we encounter, the

message of Christmas is that no matter what we’re going through, God is with us. The promise of “Emmanuel” and the joy of the Christmas season is meant to be carried out throughout the year and integrated into each part of our lives. Today’s Gospel doesn’t just tell us that God is with us when we’re sitting in our pews on Sunday or when we’re celebrating the birth of Jesus; rather, He is with us no matter where we are or what we are doing.

Wishing everyone a joyful, peace-filled Christmas as we celebrate the promise of “Emmanuel”!

– Caitlin
