Wednesday: Wacky Wednesday Students and staff both dressed to impress in their craziest outfits. Thursday: Thing 1, Thing 2, Read to Me and I'll Read to YOU Participants dressed up as Thing 1 and Thing 2 or as twins. Grade levels across the school paired up for some partner reading. Friday: Oh, the Places You'll Go! Students and staff wore shirts that represented the places they have been or the places they would like to go.

In addition to the daily activities above, we invited student family members, central office staff, and school board members to come out and join in the fun as GUEST READERS on Wednesday, March 1st. Southern Alamance High won 1st place and will be going to state tournament on April 1st at A&T in Greensboro! Congratulations to both teams that did a great job representing their schools and our district! Here’s the “long-term problem” they had to work to solve: To Be Continued: A Superhero Cliffhanger Creativity is being taken away from the world, and it is up to Odyssey teams to rescue it! Teams will create and present a humorous performance about an unexpected superhero that encounters three different situations where it must save creativity in some way. The superhero will change appearance when it displays its superpowers and go back to blending in with society when not. The performance will also include a clumsy sidekick, a nemesis character, a choreographed battle, and a cliffhanger ending.

Shout Out from Student Support Services Kim Yarborough Lead Social Worker

This week we celebrated National School Social Work week! There are currently 28 School Social Workers that serve schools in ABSS. School Social Workers are valuable members of their school's Student Support team. We are utilized to break down barriers that students and families may experience. We work to identify needs and address them by participating in home visits, Child and Family Team meetings, as well as consulting with community partners. This year's theme is "Be the Change": School Social Workers as Change Agents to Help Students Succeed. Thank you ABSS social workers for continuing to be the change agents in your schools.

Shout Out from Graham Middle School Dayson Pasion, STEM Educator

On Thursday, March 9th ten sixth-grade

student groups, chosen by their peers,

presented at the third annual Graham

Middle School Shark Tank event. ELA

teachers Lisa Cates, Beth Estes and Linda

Kroger facilitated this transdisciplinary

unit during the third nine weeks,

culminating with student presentations.

Students were asked to solve a real

world problem of their choosing and

create either a product or service and

then pitch their ideas to local community

professionals. Students tackled problems

like sixth-grade student participation in

middle school sports, skin care,

availability of school supplies, student

engagement and school pride,

homelessness, animal cruelty, water

scarcity and many more. The event had

grown so large this year that we had to

move the event off-site. Thank you to the

Graham Cinema for hosting the event.

This project was an anchor for the ELA

classes. As students used the engineering

design process to develop their solutions,

they also learned how to analyze

informational text and media to research

the latest developments of their chosen

problem and how to write and speak

persuasively to convince their class and

then the “Sharks” to choose their product

or service. Students also used resources

from our makerspace, The Innovation Lab

to help develop their prototypes. Some

ALAMANCE-BURLINGTON SCHOOLS AROUND OUR SCHOOLS SHOUT OUTS Mar 10, 2017

students learned and used Tinkercad to

develop 3D renderings of their products

that they could later print on our 3D

printer. Students learned how to code to

create apps and websites. Students

learned how to storyboard, shoot and

edit video to develop a persuasive

narrative in order to sell their pitch.

Students calculated costs and developed

budgets. Some groups even calculated

the valuation of their business venture!

Many student groups also had a social

component, where future profits would

benefit a charity or organization that

aligned with the problem they chose. A

huge shout out to our ELA teachers for

developing a problem-based learning

opportunity for our students that

provided them with choice, space to

explore their passions, freedom that

allowed students to be creative and take

risks all while developing as readers,

writers and speakers.

Many thanks to all the teachers that

made our event possible whether it was

helping on the day of the event,

critiquing and providing feedback to

student groups, or being a mentor.

On March 7, ABSS CTE took twenty-five 9th and 10th grade male students interested in health careers to the Duke University’s School of Nursing to introduce them to nontraditional careers in Nursing. Students represented six high schools! The tour began with an information session given by Dr. Brett Morgan, the faculty advisor for the Duke American Assembly of Men in Nursing and an Assistant Professor. The topics included education requirements, salary ranges and the various specialty areas of nursing. Students learned that males make up only 10% of the nursing profession so the opportunities are endless for those opting for this profession. After

Tamia Marrow just received one of the first awards at

the NC DECA State competition to become a Certified

Guest Services Professional. Please congratulate Tamia

and Mr. Mitchell for all their hard work that is already

paying off this year at the State level!

the session, students heard from a panel consisting of two nursing students, one labor and delivery nurse and two nurse anesthetists. Each panel member told their story that led them to the nursing field, though their backgrounds were different all had the same vision for their future whether in general nursing or a specialty area. The panel had the same message for the students: make good grades, job shadow and volunteer in health careers, and take as many science, math and technology courses as offered in your schools. Lunch was provided by the Duke American Assembly for Men in Nursing.

Following lunch, students went on the Center for Nursing Discovery Tour. The students visited the skills lab in the areas of labor and delivery, intubation and anesthesia. During the tour, students were able to view demonstrations and engage in hands-on learning by actively participating. Activities included: checking pulses, listening to heartbeats, intubating patients (mannequins) and viewing the vein finder.

It was a great day and all the students left with a better understanding of nursing in the 21st century and how it is not just a career for women. We want to thank Josh Tai, President of the Duke American Assembly of Men in Nursing, for coordinating this event and making the day a true learning experience!
