Rustenburg – A 19-year old girl has been ar-rested by the Rustenburg Police on Monday, 20 July 2015, for allegedly kidnapping a new born baby. The baby was born at Job Shimankana Ta-bane provincial hospital in Rustenburg on Sunday, 19 July. Both the mother and the child were dis-charged from hospital on Monday. Capt. Paul Ramaloko, police spokesperson, said while the mother was waiting with the baby for her pick-up transport outside the hospital, she was approached by the suspect, who appeared to be a good Samaritan.She congratulated the mother for having a new born and offered her R23 to buy food. The woman, 31, then handed over her new born to the suspect so that she can get back to the hospital shop to buy food. When she returned, both the baby and the suspect had disappeared. The victim alerted the hospital staff who then called the police.Preliminary investigations by police revealed that the suspect took a metre taxi operating outside the hospital to an unknown destination. Further

probes led police to Sondela Extention 22 near Boitekong in Rustenburg where the suspect and the child were found at the suspect’s parents’ house. The suspect was arrested, and charged with kidnapping and detained at the Rustenburg police station.The suspect’s mother told police she was sur-prised by the new born as her daughter has never been pregnant. When the suspect was asked about her disappearance with the baby, she did not respond. The victim was pleased with the police response which reunited her with her baby. “I think I went blank for a while. This teen looked so innocent to me. I can’t imagine what her plans were with my baby,” she said.The docket has been handed over to the Fam-ily Violence Child Protection and Sexual offences Unit for further investigations. The suspect ap-peared before the Rustenburg Magistrates’ court earlier this week.
