Kerby Chua, Errol humbly says: “(Sen. Kerby) is still at the top of the pyramid as far as JCI basketball goes.” Incidentally, Errol is quite familiar with Sen. Kerby’s game because it was Red Bull (then known as Perwoll – Red Bull) that ousted Sen. Kerby’s team, One Tagaytay Place – Atomy, last year in a thrilling two-game playoff. One Win, One Loss In their second game, playing without Errol who is currently out of the country, the Red Bull rampage skidded to a halt after falling 55-59 to Ironwood Estates – Toby’s. But this was not before Red Bull made a last ditch effort by dropping 31 points in the fourth quarter. It remains to be seen how long Red Bull will be without its top big man. What is known that it would be a mistake to underestimate this team under any circumstance.

NEWS

Message from the Basketball CommissionerGreetings my fellow JCI Manila brothers!

I would like to welcome you to an exciting year of basketball. This year our venue shall be at Ateneo University’s Moro Lorenzo Gymnasium. This venue is conducive to attracting family and friends to watch games. With various choices of restaurants within a minute’s drive, free parking spaces, and ample bleacher seats to enjoy our games, spectators have plenty of reason to spend their Sunday afternoons with us.

We also hired officiating services of former NCAA & PBA personnel so expect more accurate statistics and well-monitored calls.

To the team owners, thank you very much for your interest in investing in an activity that fosters brotherhood and cultivates camaraderie!

To the players, let us remember that the 10 team logos may differentiate us but the JCI Manila logo unites us all. Let us all act in a manner which brings pride to our LO!Best,

Jackie Sadhwani2015 JCI Manila Basketball Commissioner

Everybody knows about that sports shop located in every mall that is named after a JCI Manila Past (Best LO) President. It’s the place to go to for everyday sports needs. But what if you’re looking for something a little more upscale - say the European car segment equivalent of the sporting world? You might want to call 2014 LOM Commissioner Marvin Navarro.

For 10 years, Marvin has been working for E-Sports International, a company distributing and servicing high-end gym equipment such as Technogym, Rephouse sports and commercial rubber flooring, and Limonta Artificial Turf.

E-Sports counts among its clients hotels, resorts, high-end condominiums, and country clubs such as Fairmont and Raffles, Discovery Shores, Rockwell Land, and the Manila Polo Club. For those that don’t have access to these distinguished establishments, you can instead check out the very visible football pitch which they installed at The Turf at BGC.

According to Marvin, their clients “operate in a highly competitive market” and E-Sports can help their clients differentiate themselves by offering premium gym and sports solutions.

In addition, E-Sports also offers playground equipment supplied by Park Games Equipment.

Building your dream gym or workout area? If you have to, ahem, ask for prices, just contact Marvin or check out E-Sport’s website at www.esports.ph.

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are currently undergoing intense training and nutrition regimens that runs at least two months before stepping in the ring for a maximum of 36 minutes. In contrast, a typical JCI Manila member will play 40 minutes of basketball on Sunday after spending the week staring at a computer, driving in Manila traffic, and having kare-kare and crispy pata for Sunday lunch.

Proper body conditioning and nutrition are necessary to avoid injuries and to increase stamina during any sporting event. But what can the ordinary JCI Manila member do if he is not earning $200MN to get step into the basketball court? For those of us who still need to earn a living yet have sadistic glee in beating our kumpadres at basketball, beer bellies, balding heads, achy knees, and all, our very own Dr. Rich Pasion, Orthopaedic Surgeon, has these suggestions to keep you fit and healthy:

1. Insert a physical activity which you can do every day or every other day for an hour into your workweek. For this, Doc Rich endorses the use of a stationary bike with consistent tension. If walking is your thing, walk briskly and not just leisurely. Pro tip: When using a stationary bike, make sure your knees stay at a 90-degree angle throughout the exercise.

2. Warm-up and stretch before the game. It doesn’t matter what you do first as long as you do both. Think of your body as an engine that runs smoother and safer once properly warmed. Meanwhile, stretching the right muscles reduces the risk of injury. If you need help stretching, try out the manong therapist provided by the Sports Committee.

3. Eat 3-4 hours before the game. Not eating at all is just as bad as eating 1-2 hours before a game. Avoid heavy protein for your pre-game meal. Yes, we are aware that Shaquille O’Neal eats steak before an NBA game. You are not Shaq.

4. Hydrate. Plain and simple: drink-up before, during, and after the game. Water quenches your thirst but you also need to replenish lost nutrients. For this, your favorite sports drink (e.g. Gatorade, Pocari Sweat) should do the trick. As for taking energy drinks like Red Bull, just make sure it doesn’t cause palpitations for you. It’s different for every person. Avoid alcohol before the game as it will cause dehydration. Save the drinking for the post-game team dinner.

5. No smoking. Whether you’re playing or not, smoking makes it harder for you to breathe. Obviously, not being able to breathe means you won’t be able to keep up with the young guns.

6. Prepare mentally and not just physically. Basically, know who to expect and know what your defensive assignment specializes in. Be mentally alert and do not let the hotshot BJC cross you over and break your ankles or twist your knees.

Need to consult further? Doc Rich can be found at Focus Athletics which is located at 2259 Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City. Focus Athletics can help you rehab an injury and/or get you in proper shape for Sunday. Anne Curtis and Solenn Heusaff sightings included in their monthly packages.
