A boat to make you happy

I recently ran across some statistics about thepurchase of used goods. I must say that I was sur-prised to find that among all the categories surveyed, thedemand for used boats was particularly high. Examining thedata collected by Subito.it, the largest on-line portal in Italy forbuying and selling among private individuals, you can find outsome interesting things. The demand for certain kinds of itemshas been steadily on the rise, progressing even at a double-figured rate compared to last year. Looking more closely, wecan discover details that testify to a change in habits and atti-tudes about spending. If ithas therefore become imper-ative to spend as little as pos-sible, it seems that thisbehavior can be seen acrossthe board, among differenttypes of consumers, at least, based on the target of the research. At the moment on theportal, in fact, more than 136 thousand Italians are trying buya used Vespa, more than 60 thousand an iPhone or a Bmw.Plenty of people are looking for a deal on a Rolex and up to15,800 people, a boat. Probably they are just looking for adinghy or a raft, but it doesn’t matter. What matters is that itis a precise indication of Italians’ desire to go to sea. A grow-ing desire that those who work in the nautical world would dowell to stimulate and satisfy. It is Italy, surrounded by theMediterranean, the most beautiful sea in the world, where sail-ing ought to be most appreciated. Europe will soon be a flour-ishing market for Italian-made boats. Besides the USA, Mex-ico and surrounding countries, for the moment we need toforget about China. Whoever thought, after having sold a fewboats in Asia, that the market there was opening up, hasbegun to realize that it is going to be a long, hard road andresults will be slow in coming. Moreover, in reading the UltraHnwi classifications, we see that of people who have morethan 30 million dollars in invested assets, 65,579 are NorthAmericans, followed by 54,170 Europeans, 43,026 Asians,15,230 South Americans, 4,475 Indians, 3,967 Australians

and 2,488 Africans. If we take into consideration that in Italyalone there are over 200 thousand people who possess morethan a million dollars worth of investments, we can easilyaffirm that the sector’s recovery has nothing to do with eco-nomics. Besides, for the first time in years, since the onset ofthe recession, the Italian GDP is expected to rise in 2014.According to the most pessimistic estimates, the increase willbe at least 0.5 percent. That the situation is changing can beseen also in the number of last minute requests to participatein the Genoa Boat Show. No one wants to miss out on the

chance to take part in therecovery, but just being pres-ent isn’t enough: you need tohave something new to showor to say. The old recipes ofthe new world aren’t enoughanymore. We need mass

communication, newspapers and television to spread theword about the nautical world without wearing the blinders ofprejudice. “She saw the motorboat coming at her. She wavedher arms so they would see her, but in vain.” The news storywas certainly dramatic, but why do we allow these rare inci-dents to become a major media event, making people believethat the sea is a dangerous place and the chance of accidentsis so high? Every day in Italy 590 road accidents are report-ed, killing an average of 12 people and wounding 842. Lastyear there were 215,405 car wrecks causing 4,237 deathswith 307,258 people wounded. A dozen or so accidents atsea are nothing in comparison. The media do not give nearlythe same emphasis to stopping the ongoing massacre ofpeople in automobile accidents. Not to mention how intense-ly the Financial Police check out business in seaside touristresorts heavily frequented by yachts. Unfortunately the socialenvy of mass media journalists (the purest of the pure) alsodamage a sector that ought to be presented for what it is: atremendous opportunity for economic, social, industrial, cul-tural and tourism growth.

Suzuki 2012 BalanceLast year the outboard engine market in Italy recorded adecrease of 26.3% over the previous year but, despite the bleakpicture, for Suzuki Italy Marine Division 2012 was a good year.It consolidated its market in Italy and the pool of engines withlicense reached a market share of 26.5%. The other extremelypositive result was achieved in the range of outboard between20 and 25 horsepower where Suzuki increased its share of themarket by 10%.Hydrodynamic footIt incorporates the latest technological innovations developedin the field of hydrodynamics: its strength is the minimum resist-ance to the advancement in water. The goal of the Suzuki engi-neers was to enhance the pressure of the flows on the propeller, increasing the performance. The result is increased efficiencyand stability of the in-water part, to which is added the reduc-tion of friction. The redesign of the foot has allowed the introduction of twonew additional water outlets operating in the lower part, then,

with a total of4 waterou t l e t s ,two on

All the biggest names in the world of boatbuilders and nautical supply and service com-panies will once again be present at theupcoming edition, along with the welcome return of a fewthat had been missing in recent years. Expectations are high forthe newest additions to the Show: a section called Sea Expe-rience, dedicated to aquatic sports (including, canoe, kayak, windsurf, kitesurf, sport fishing and sailing) and accessories, inthe exciting interactive context of trial runs and tests; the PowerVillage, where all the boat engines will be displayed (inboard andoutboard, diesel and gasoline) together with power control sys-tems, generators, hardware and components, fuels and lubri-cants; and the Boat Discovery section, designed to guidepotential boat owners towards making the best choicestowards purchasing his or her first boat.

days of the show in a crescendo of culture, entertainment andfun: don’t miss it!

A truly international eventAmong the novelties for the 2013 edition is a new internationaladvertising campaign, expanded to include developing nations,multi-lingual social-network communication and a receptiondesk at the Show dedicated to welcoming international visitors.Recognizing the shift in the geographical origins of potential vis-itors and customers, in particular from the Far and Middle East, has motivated the organizers to continue and expand theirefforts to welcome foreign visitors, whose numbers in 2012reached 22,000.This is why, in addition to the usual promotional and press cam-paign across Italy, a new, widespread international advertisingcampaign is underway to reach not only typical visiting coun-tries like The UK, the USA, Canada, France, Spain, Germany,Austria, Holland and the Czech republic, but will target special-ized press in Russia, Turkey, the Middle East and Hong Kong-Singapore, with the intention of cashing in on the commercialpotential of newly developing economies, capturing new mar-kets where the interest and appreciation for high-quality Italian-made products and especially Italian nautical products, hasalways been strong. In this context, major media partner-ships have been estab-lished with some of the world’s most important magazines inthis sector. They, in turn, have been giving wide coverage of theinnovations of the 2013 Show, from the new and more func-tional layout, to the thematic areas, the increase in services andthe many surrounding events that will be taking place all overthe city of Genoa during the five days of the Exhibition. But the attention to welcoming and informing visitors from allover the world doesn’t stop here. Already social networks likeFacebook and Twitter are being used to communicate directlywith a vast and sophisticated international public in their ownlanguage and a reception desk manned by multi-lingual per-sonnel will be set up during the Exhibition to help foreign visi-tors orient themselves around the Show’s new layout and helpmake their visit to the city of Genoa both more functional andmore pleasant.

Storiedamare.itWhere sea stories (“da mare”) meet love stories (“da amare”)A new interactive web portal dedicated to boat lovers is up andrunning. Designed to let sailing enthusiasts and other lovers ofthe open seas share their stories and experiences with oneanother, www.storiedamare.it has been set up to receive multi-media files, photos and stories throughout the summer of 2013.The strangest dives, the most incredible fishing expeditions, thefunniest scenes of sea-faring life are expected to show up here. The goal of this megayacht project, signed bythe Zuccon Syd team, with a steel hull and alu-minium superstructure, is to reach a very distinctive pat-tern, strongly architectural, focused on vertical surfaces and lim-ited to a few essential features, resulting in a yacht with a sharpdesign.Great attention has been given to the external common spacesequipment and to exclusive use for the owner, with the originaladdition of green areas as greenhouses and winter gardens. There are four decks, along with the sun deck, all connectedwith central large stairs and an elevator. ly dedicated to the guests and the living zone has beendivided into three portions: a formal living area, a cinemaand a bar area with two balconies (where a great doubleheight visually links the main deck with the upper deck). The guest sleeping area has six double cabins, two ofwhich are VIP cabins with a balcony. On the upper deck the external space becomes the focal pointof the life onboard. A clever system of sliding glass-walls allowsthe transformation of the inner dining area into an outside din-ing area (patio), creating a unique setting that includes the bigswimming pool and the large sunbathing area. On this deckyou can also find the steering along with the Owner’s cabin andstudio, while on the aft part is the helipad and another relaxationsitting area with sunbeds and sofas.Going up there is the deck entirely dedicated to the owner, witha studio, spa, two large terraces (one on the stern, and theother on the aft) as well as a huge fitness area, positioned foruse also by the other guests. The Sun deck is completely open and equipped with a Jacuzzi,a lunch area and an ample sunbathing area.In terms of balancing and functionality, the layout showsclearly how the integration between external and internallays the foundation for all the living-areas; in comparisonto more traditional solutions adopted on similar vessels, the

exteriors play a key role in defining the space allocation, coming to the point of physically ‘entering’ into other vol-umes. A clear example is the use of teak in the dining areaon the upper deck: a clever system of sliding glass-wallsallows the transformation of this room from an inner-formalinto an outside-informal dining area. This concept is further emphasised with the confirmation of thegreen theme. The aft part of the upper deck is surely another characterizingelement, where the majority of outdoor activities take place, thanks both to the abundance of space and the large swim-ming pool.Another distinguishing aspect, inspired by studies on other liv-ing solutions, is the theme of spatial integration between thebridges’ common area; wide double heights allow the bridgesto be linked visually and physically, offering potential new oppor-tunities to perceive the space.

The owner deck, the bridge for the exclusive use of the

owner, with study, spa, two large terraces, one forward and

one aft, and a huge fitness area that has been placed in such

a way as to be also shared by guests.

A big, international company, a 150-year history full of success stories and anundeniable dedication to quality boat building: these are the foundations

For Baglietto, those shoulders are rep-resented by their own competence and thirst for inno-vation, on the one hand, and by the Gavio Group whobought the brand in January 2012. Today the results of

these operations can clearly be seen in the relaunch ofthe brand, its products and its entire productive line.

The range will include 40- to 60-meter steel and aluminumdisplacement vessels and aluminum planing craft from 38 to 50meters long. Among the first under construction are 53-metermodel and a 46-meter one, characterized by a very original pro-

Still in the planning stagesare a 58-meter model, introduced at the Monaco Boat Showlast year, and a 43-meter one, details of which are slated to beunveiled at the next Fort Lauderdale Show (October 31 –November 4).Planing boats currently on the drawing board include a 38- anda 42-meter model, whose plans will be presented at the nextMonaco Boat Show, while a 46-meter model is already underconstruction, characterized by dynamic exterior lines, a briskand bold prow, countered by an imposing stern, highlighted by

The production branchThanks to a 20 million euro investment over the next few years, the production center in La Speziais destined to become one of the most important in the entire Mediterranean basin. Twohuge, fully-equipped structures will be dedicated to carpentry, mechanics and refitting forboats of up to 55 meters. A third building will handle the construction of new, 60-meterboats, with a capacity of working on six vessels at the same time, for a possible output offour ships yearly. Each structure will also be equipped with a modern, temperature-controlled paint booth to guarantee top quality in the delicate phases of installation andpainting. The 700 ton travel lift, already present at the shipyard, means that even vessels of up to 60 meterscan be hauled and launched. In addition, there are four carriages with an equal capacity. Finally, thecompany also plans to renew its ties with the military, reinstating an old tradition of the “Gabbiano”brand.

Spectacular was the arrival at night of the new MCY 86. An event that had been studied in

detail in order to maximize a boat with many interesting ideas. (See our sea trial on page 108).

A select number of guests, including owners, editors and journalists of the most importantinternational magazines, joined the top managementof Monte Carlo Yachts and Beneteau Groupe to celebrate thereveal of the new MCY 86, the fourth model in the MCY range. At the event there were also the designers Carlo Nuvolari andDan Lenard and the team who followed the yacht develop-ment. After appearing in the open sea accompanied by a splendid fullmoon, the MCY 86 reached the private pier of Key Largo Villain Cap d’Ail.Here guests could see the yacht up close , with the perform-ance of the famous violinist Saule Kilaite.Once on board, all participants were able to understand thefunctionality, the design solutions and the quality of the featuresof the MCY 86, all of which make the boat a yacht comparableto one of higher dimensions. The Monte Carlo Yachts 86 willbe presented for the first time to the public at the Festival de laPlaisance in Cannes. At its side will be the other models of therange: MCY 76, MCY 70, MCY 65.

ARCHEB78 September 2013

A sense of belonging arises when membersof a group feel a connection with one anoth-er and a connection to the group as awhole. The owner of a Riva knows that his relationshipwith his boat is based on more than just the practicalitiesof needing to travel in safety and comfort.“Belonging” is an emotional, psychological issue. No one

can impose a sense of belonging; we can only create anenvironment conducive to making an individual feel wel-come to becoming an integral part. The stronger our brand loyalty, the more we feel that it is“ours,” the more we feel dedicated to preserving its valueover time. This may seem like an abstract idea, but it iswhat occurred to me as I was standing on the wharf inRapallo, just a few minutes before the boats took off for the

“Elegance Pageant” of the 2013 edition of the Riva Trophy.I was watching a couple of boat owners who were silentlyobserving our festive group of merry-makers from thecockpit of their boat, and I thought, “It isn’t enough to owna 20-meter yacht to be happy.” I would have liked to invitethem to join our celebration, but as I was also a guest, Icouldn’t. I thought to myself that we need to find a way todeal with unhappy boat owners. Happiness and the desireto be a bit more carefree, at least when we are not work-ing, was one of the main characteristics of this sixth edi-tion of the Riva Trophy. Organized by Monaco Boat Service, a Monacan dealer, with the participation of Nautica Casarola, the historic Ital-ian dealer, the 21 boats participating in the event sailedpast the lovely seaside resorts of the Cinque Terre, Portofi-

no and Rapallo. An Ariston, an Aquarama, a Saint Tropez,a Sportfisherman 25’, a Bahamas and a Dolce Vita togeth-er with an Aquariva Super, a Rivarama, an 86’ Domino anda 92’ Duchessa were truly the stars of the day.The program began with an actual race, the Rapallo-Ver-nazza-Rapallo, and ended with a Gala Soirée in Portofino.Besides the speed race, an elegance competition was alsoheld in front of the terrace of the Rapallo Yacht Club. Thecrews all tried to outdo one another. One even had a trucktravel through the night to bring in a delicate, antique repli-ca of the Milan Cathedral to recall the city’s atmosphere inthe 80s. Although many of the boats were decidedly “vin-tage,” they all were in perfect shape, as if they were brandnew. Particularly splendid was the refurbished RivaBertram, owned by a Dutchman. Vhernier, who shares with Riva a passion for fine crafts-manship that respects tradition, but embraces the future, partnered the event. Vhernier’s exclusive line of jewelry wasdisplayed in a fashion show in the square in Portofino.Another partner, greatly appreciated by the boat owners, was Charles Heidsieck Champagne.

The port Carlo Riva is now a facility that offers five-star

accommodation thanks to the service, the organization and to

the staff discretion. There are 400 berths, two garages,

underground parking for 200 cars, 22 shops, parking,

restaurant, workshop, Yacht Club with terrace and swimming

pool close to the sea.

The Riva Bertram of a Dutch ship owner, renovated with muchlove, is a true vintage icon of our times. There was a tough fight

between the queens of yesterday and today to be the star of the eventlike the Domino 86 designed by Officina Italiana Design by MauroMicheli and Sergio Beretta.

t’s been 130 years since fans of the seaand challenges gave birth to modern reg-ulations of sailing competitions. The placewas just Naples and in the role of coordinator therewas the "Society of racing." To recall the charm andromantic but at the same time exciting atmosphere ofthose early races, the president of the Royal Yacht ClubSavoy Rowing - Giuseppe Dalla Vecchia - wanted areprint of the Regulations for the races of 1875.And the Gulf of Naples is therefore the natural setting

for the vintage yachts gathering that brings to life the old daysand allows for a dip in the ancient art of navigation, when theboats were made of wood and there was nothing of moderninstrumentation to which we are accustomed today. In par-ticular, the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge is an annualevent desired by the Royal Yacht Club Savoy Rowing, in col-laboration with the Office of Navy Sports Sailing, reserved tovintage and classic yachts. Among the most famous boatssubscribed there were Manta, Marconi cutter of 1935; Naif, winner of the Challenge Durand de la Penne in 2010; Cholita, winner of last year's gathering of Naples, and Emilia, the 12meters built in 1930 by the Costaguta shipyard in GenoaVoltri. TheItalian Navy participated with its fleet: the Marconi yawl Capri-cia, Corsaro II and North Star. For the third consecutive year, there were also the Classic Dragons, monotype born in 1929in Norway, which competed for the Eduardo Pepe Gold Cupperpetual challenge.

expanding, they moved their headquarters to a larger site inSenigallia, a 12,000 square meter area, 500 of which for officesand a showroom and the rest for boat storage, refitting andservice. How did you come to understand that there was a need forservices aimed at boat owners?I have always been work- and service-minded. Even when Iwas little, I liked personalizing objects. This where my ideas forcustomizing refitted boats come from. Can you make a boat even more exclusive than it was orig-inally designed to be?It’s like when you buy a house, and then you personalize it withfurniture and objects. For example, an Italian living in MonteCarlo who owns a Pershing 90’ wanted to have a Jacuzziinstalled in the bathroom. Everyone he consulted discouragedhim from doing it, but I made his dream come true. What is your strong point? We don’t need to depend on anybody, because we have expertpersonnel working for us: body shop workers, wood varnish-ers, laquerers, carpenters and electricians. Do you also overhaul engines?Yes, for what concerns the generators, but for the actualengines, we outsource to two companies we collaborate with.I believe it is best that a BMW engine gets checked by a BMWmechanic and a Porsche engine by a Porsche mechanic.Transmission work is also outsourced. There are cases where rebuilding a boat is more expensivethan purchasing a brand new one. This is undoubtedly true. But the sentimental value of a boatwhere you intend to spend quality free time with your family ispriceless. This is why people choose to restore a vintage Rivaor other boat on which they wish to spend special moments. This is precisely the case with the Pershing 88, one of themost iconic boats on the market, whose picture has beenon the cover of every specialized magazine in the world.

Matteo Cervasi and Cmm Yacht ServiceInterview

How do you convince a boat owner to refurbish his boatrather than simply replace it?When a boat owner loves his boat, but wants a change, ourarchitects can completely redesign the interiors. The exteriorprofile will remain the same, but the entire interior will be totallydifferent. The owner of the 54-footer we remodeled last year, after 20 years, had a TV installed in the cockpit. This is surelysomething new. Are there older boats whose technology is outdated thatcan be brought up to date?Of course. A yacht is like a villa, with several floors, walls and aroof. Internally you can dowhat you want each time youredecorate, put in three cabinsrather than four… How long does it take? Forexample, how long would ittake to totally refurbish a 60-foot boat? One winter. You take it apart and rebuild it?Our main forte lies in consultation. Typically, boat ownerscome to us to have the engine serviced or to get an estimate

ARCHEB92 September 2013

for treating the teak wood and stuff like that. But this is wherewe come into play, picking up the boat and bringing it here, then drafting a list of problems we have identified in takingher out. We leave her in storage over the winter and compilea detailed list of what kind of work is indispensible for theboat, and what kinds of things are merely advisable. A banalbut clear example, often a boat owner dreams of being ableto listen to music from his i-Phone but it doesn’t occur to himto ask us to help because he thinks it is nearly impossible. If we can give him what he wants, we have created a prece-

dent, the first step in building aspecial bond that will automat-ically lead him to make otherrequests. How many people do youemploy?About twenty, directly. How many boats did you carefor last year?Only in storage, about thirty, butincluding the ones we serviced,

about sixty.I have a team in Turkey rebuilding a Pershing 64. We are alsoworking on a Pershing 115’ and completely redoing a Pershing90’in Palma de Majorca. Then there is another 90’ in Turkey, and one 90’ plus a 72’ in France. So you are practically specialized in Pershings?Since I got started at the Mondolfo shipyard, my focus is effec-tively there. I have expanded to included brands from the Fer-retti Group and obviously I can fix up any boat at this point, butthe experience I acquired at Pershing – not meaning to boast –well, there are not many people who can make the sameclaims. Have you ever considered building a boat of your own? I would never betray the shipyards that I have been workingwith all my life. Manufacturing is really not my line.

ver the course of theyears, the collaborationbetween Roman architect AndreaVallicelli and the boat building companyfrom the Marche region of Italy, Isa, has borneexcellent fruit. Vallicelli applied his years ofexperience designing luxury cruise and regat-ta sailboats to creating sleek and elegantmotoryachts for Isa, from the “littlest” sports

model, the semi-custom, fiberglass, hydrojet propelled Isa 120,to the majestic 63-meter Kolaha. After a long and successful series of semi-custom models, both in fiberglass and steel and aluminum (Isa 120, 133and 470), between 2010 and 2013 the company launchedtwo entirely custom-designed megayachts, one 60 meterslong and the other 63, as well as three 50-meter modelsthat share a common naval platform, but whose exteriorslines and interior layouts are completely different from oneanother. The Belle Anna, subject of this article, is the third

O o fthis series, following theLiberty and the Papi duPapi. With the exception ofthe 60-meter model, the Mary JeanII, all the boats mentioned here have beendesigned by Andrea Vallicelli. Concluding thepanorama, the company has recently delivered a 41-meter, custom-made yacht, and the first in a series ofsemi-custom Isa 140s with hybrid motors is currently underconstruction, along with three custom-designed modelsmeasuring between 43 and 66 meters. The 66-meter yachtis a magnificent specimen belonging to Isa’s new Gran Tur-ismo line, which will include customizable models in a vari-ety of lengths.

What the models will have in common, earning them theGran Turismo title, is a series of distinctive features suchas a straight prow line and austere interiors.

Exteriors What sets the Belle Anna apart is, without a doubt, thedesign of her stern featuring a pair of slightly curved stair-ways framing a pair of glass doors which are also curved. This element has already featured on the second in the 50-meter series, the Papi du Papi, but in this case the dra-matic, twin staircases linking the poop deck to the sun-deck above distract a bit from the ingenious closure solu-tion for the beach area. The tender garage, which openslaterally, has been positioned a little forward. The entirestern area is used as a beach club, with a very comfyindoor lounge that opens onto a bathing platform with anelectro-hydraulically operated extension which can doubleits surface area on command. The yacht is owned by a young couple who love to spendtheir vacations at sea with their children and with friends. For her maiden voyage, they took her all around theMediterranean, to Croatia, Montenegro and Sardinia, avoiding the more crowded (and trendy) ports, only stop-ping when they needed to get supplies.

Although the Belle Anna was designed for this purpose, she is, as one would expect for a 50-meter yacht, extreme-ly luxurious. Her interiors, sophisticated and refined, weredesigned by one of the top names in international interiordesign: François Zuretti. The main deck, upper deck and sundeck all feature largelounge and dining areas, well distributed to offer a varietyof options. Forward of the wheelhouse is a lovely spot forenjoying the open air in utter privacy, whether at sea oranchored in the harbor. The view of the sea and surroundings is guaranteed by aseries of details denoting the care and attention devotedto the project’s design. Besides the great windows thatallow light to pour profusely into the rooms on the maindeck and the upper deck, the low bulwarks crowned withthin, stainless steel handrails let you admire the view evenwhen sitting or lying on a chaise-longue on the sundeck. Here, from the arch formed by the unimposing and slight-ly curved antennas, two canopies may be opened, shad-ing both the prow and the stern.

Moving forward, past the “official” entry hall, wecome to a generous master suite, composed of a study, sleeping quarters and a huge, sumptuous bathroom. Fourcabins are located amidships, below decks, where at theowner’s request, a vast massage/wellness center with itsown bathroom has been installed. This space converts toa fifth cabin, with a queen-sized bed which can be foldeddown from the wall. Crew quarters and service areas takeup much of forward part of the lower deck and are direct-ly linked to a pantry and to the galley adjacent to the din-ing room on the main deck. the fine furniture in prevalently warm colors, browns andbeiges. The upper deck salon is characterized by splashes of redthat light up an environment intended for a variety of activ-ities: cozy corners for playing cards, reading or socializing, perhaps over a drink from the wet bar in the corner of thisroomy panoramic lounge. The dominant woods are Macassar ebony and maple ofvarying hues in the different rooms: golden beige in themaster suite, anthracite grey in the son’s cabin and pink inthe daughter’s, where one wall is covered in hand-paintedand embroidered silk, studded with pearls and semi-pre-cious stones. The furniture of the Belle Anna, as is usually the case forprivately owned yacht, was created based on precise indi-cations by the owners, who actively collaborated with theinterior designer.

Some statsTwo 3512C Caterpillar engines that develop 1765 kW(2366 hp) at 1800 rpm, allow the craft to reach a topspeed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots with afuel consumption of only 328 l/h and over 3000 miles ofautonomy. The manufacturers equipped her with a noiseand vibration reducing system that makes sailing very quiet(at cruising speed less than 50 decibels were registered thecabins, with slightly higher values in the saloon). Both theowner and the captain have expressed their satisfaction,

stating that the results exceeded their most optimisticexpectations. Although Belle Anna is not trying to be a par-ticularly “eco-friendly” yacht, the engines’ efficiency due tothe well-designed geometry of the hull keeps consumptionremarkably low while the engine and generator exhausttreatment system, specially engineered by the Dutch com-pany, MarQuip, limits the emission of pollutants. The yachthas obtained Lloyd’s Register certification and meets allMCA requirements.

What the owner has to say“The story of the Belle Anna began a long time ago… Wehad already had some fabulous vacations aboard our pre-vious yacht, an Azimut, and little by little, yachting becamea hobby for our whole family. We decided to purchase abigger one to meet our growing needs and when we sawa magnificent blue-hulled megayacht at the Monte CarloBoat show, created by Isa boat builders, we contactedthem. The personal attention we received from the salesmanager, Marcello Maggi, his professional expertisetogether with the positive comments we heard from otherIsa boat owners convinced us that they were the rightchoice for getting our yacht custom-made. While she wasbeing built we were sure we had made the right choice:our Belle Anna was delivered at noon on July 15, 2012,ahead of schedule!”

he breakwater at Lavagna Marinais where they moor the gigayachts. It is not terribly crowded, but there are a few ofthese “behemoths.” The crews on board themare busy cleaning the superstructures, thestainless steel, the windows. It is the end ofJuly. The owners will be arriving soon andeverything has got to be shipshape. Amongthe vessels berthed here is the MCY 86. It maynot be the largest on site, but it certainly cuts afine figure. Its overall length is over 26 meters,

though it is official classified as one centimeter shy of that defin-itive 24-meter limit. There are three decks: the roof of the upperfly deck is a carbon-fiber t-top with an electrically controlled soft-top.I barely have time to hop aboard before the electro-hydraulicgangway is withdrawn and we have unmoored. It is a beautifulday, without a trace of mist, since an eight-knot land breeze hasswept the skies. The waters of the Tigullio Gulf are calm andperfectly smooth. The engine room holds twin 1800HP ManV12 motors. As soon as we have passed the lights, we start topress down on the throttle. She gains power at a regular andsteady rate. Her timing is satisfactory: it took only 13 secondsfor her hull to emerge from the water. Little more than 1500 rpmis all it takes for her to plane. At 16.3 knots she consumes 242l/h. Not bad for a 26-meter craft. Her top rpm reaches 2360.The GPS registers just under 30 knots. Her performance candefinitely be labeled “sporty.” Consumption is circumscribedeven at top speeds. At full throttle the twin engines “gulp” only700 l/h. This is a relatively low consumption level, when youconsider that many boats of similar lengths can consume up to

a thousand liters per hour at full throttle. The bottom line is that, compared its competitors, the MCY 86 consumes 300 litersless for reaching analogous performance levels. The hull appears to be very stable, and not only in calm waters, but also on the waves we create by our maneuvers. But whatis truly amazing is how she comes about. I must confess that Iam generally an IPS fan so whenever I board a boat using ashaft propeller, I always wonder why the shipyard did notchoose the Volvo pod drive system. In this case, we are aboarda 26-meter boat. It would have been impossible to have a sterndrive, even with triple or quadruple installations. The Lazzarashipyard had done something like that, managing to motorizea 92-foot vessel with four IPS 900s, but the size of the MCY 86means this is not a viable option. It is no wonder, then, that notmany manufacturers have attempted to imitate Lazzara’s exam-ple. The shipyard’s transmission choice was ZF’s V-Drive, withexceptional results. She comes about in a very tight circle evenat quite high speeds. At 2000 rpm we completed a 360° rota-tion in only 40-50 meters of diameter. The hull, moreover, main-tained excellent adherence to the water. The boat did notincline, even though she was able to come about so tightly. Youfeel safe and secure, even if you are up on the fly deck. It is notonly because the hull has been so successfully executed, butalso because the boats center of gravity, despite having threedecks, is quite low. The decision to use carbon fiber for the flyt-top was not just an esthetic consideration: it helps keep thevessel light and its center of gravity low. Another contribution to her navigational prestige is theHumphree display. An automatic trim control system, theHumphree uses two “blades” rather than flaps. From the digi-tal display, during the entire voyage and at any speed, stabi-

lization was always perfect: positive during displacement phas-es and almost horizontal while planing. Only at top speed didthe slight rocking of the prow mean that the trim registeredslightly negative percentage. From the fly deck, we pass to thepilot station on the deck below. It is located fore for optimal vis-ibility. Slightly elevated with respect to the saloon, its windscreenpermits a 180° view. Rear-facing cameras whose images aredisplayed on ultra-flat screen Raymarine monitors on the dis-play panels do the rest. We reenter the marina. Maneuvers areeased by a hydraulic prow propeller and an excellent stern pro-peller. The bunkered docks of Lavagna are on the right whenentering the marina. The MCY 86 needs to fill up because, afterI disembark, she is headed to the French Riviera for her offi-cial public premiere. I handed the helm back to Federico. Iwatched him approach the dock. I expected him to head to theback of the breakwater and turn around so that he could dockfacing the outward from the marina. Instead, he easily relied onthe two propellers to rotate 360° at the mouth of the marina. The space there is quite limited and there are always otherboats coming and going. The boat spins around as if guided bya joystick. It seems very easy to handle even in tough maneu-vers in tight spots. The main deck sports an open living space with a 360° panora-ma. The open feeling is provided by the vast windows, theundefined overlap between dining and living spaces and espe-cially by the two, large, lateral doorways, level with the diningtable, leading to adjacent balconies. They can be lowered at theroadstead giving the feeling of being right on the water’s sur-face. The galley is separate and is located in the crew area. Livabilityis remarkable in this area, too, since the ceilings are over two

meters high and there are separate cabins, one for the com-mander and another with bunk beds for the rest of the crew. The five-fired induction-cooking stovetop, the side-by-siderefrigerator and every other appliance imaginable make for akitchen worthy of a Masterchef –type TV cooking program, ableto satisfy the needs of a large number of guests. Indoor livingareas are found both fore and aft. The aft living area offers a tra-ditional set up featuring a large dining table and a linear sofa. The interiors also offer two options that bespeak great attentionto detail: one is a bathroom accessible, not from the saloon, asone might think, but from the portside gangway. This allowsguests to enter the bathroom after having taken a dip in the seawithout passing through the dining room. The door to this bath-room is watertight to avoid any unpleasant surprises in roughseas. Another excellent design solution is the Up&Down poop

deck and the tender garage. The poop deck platform can evenhouse two PWCs. This saves space on the fly usually occupiedby a davit, allowing for a larger lounge area. The engine roomcontains a 28 kW generator and an air conditioning system aswell as two Seakeeper stabilizers to be used for roadsteadberthing. There are two of them, instead of one large one, tobetter balance the hull and keep it from listing. There are five dif-ferent layout options for the sleeping areas, from a luxury, dou-ble master-suite version with only two enormous cabins to acharter version with five smaller ones. Between these twoextremes lies the version premiering here, with four cabins. Aftof the saloon, down some stairs are the VIP cabin and a twinguest cabin. The rooms are spacious with plenty of headroomand the bathrooms seem like master baths. Wardrobes are alsoabundant. The hallway between these cabins also provides asecond access to the engine room. The master suite isaccessed instead by a stairway located forward of the saloon. It takes up the entire beam width and includes a vanity, a livingroom, a bathroom with a separate toilet and a double showerstall. Storage space is not only found in the cupboards anddoorways, but also under the bed. Some of the elegant details, such as the alabaster wash basin counter and the bronzeheadboard, are immediately evident. Nearby the masters’ suiteis a second twin guest cabin. Here, too, the private bathroomis equipped with a separate shower and, just as in the sterntwin cabin, the two beds can be pushed together. This partic-ular layout accentuates the separation between the guestareas, located amidships and aft, and the forward crew areas. The same is true for the walkways between the saloon andother indoor areas, allowing the crew to move around withoutinterfering with the guests.

ight and technology have played astarring role in the design of this 20-meter craft. Particularly striking is how muchof her profile is glass: the vast windscreen andgenerous lateral windows create a feeling of con-tinuum between indoors and out, of contact withthe sea. The hand of designerAlberto Mancini is evident on this project. Coming from theworld of sports car design, he collaborated with the engineer-ing and design department at Dominator under the direction ofengineer Donini. The steel and glass exterior, accented by the teak tabletops andpanel lighting in the wheelhouse and on the fly, along with thecolor scheme of the outdoor sofas, were carefully chosen tocreate a particular atmosphere that mirrors the interior. This means a higher foredeckthat has a dual function: more space in the cabins below and agood spot for a sunbed. A classic combination completed bycomfortable side decks protected by strong railings and a deepand ample cockpit adjacent to the bathing platform. The fly isaccessible via an external stairway. The secondary pilot stationis well protected by a wrap-around windscreen that extends lat-erally all the way to the base of the roll bar. Each Dominator is unique as far as furniture is concerned, sincethe boatyard provides a vast range of options in terms of mate-rial and components so that each individual owner can customdesign the interiors according to his own taste and needs, although Alberto Mancini’s suggestions are always well accept-ed. A decisive role is played by the owner’s cabin of the 640: theglass window surface has been extended to the doublecompared to the previous model to bring a great amount ofnatural light to this area and to enjoy the contact with the sea.The use of mirrored windows between the cabin and thebathroom filters out light and increases the perception ofspace while maintaining privacy and giving a spectacular viewfrom the shower.

achts. Materials used include back-lit onyx and oak matchedby other soft and warm materials like Alcantara and leather, alternated with colder ones like mirrors, glass and lacqueredwood creating a sophisticated play of light and contrasts.

The trialWe started off from the jetty of the prestigious, historic yacht club,Compagnia della Vela, with the incomparable backdrop of thecity of Venice tempting to distract us from our “journalistic mis-sion” and transform a task requiring careful attention into a purepleasure cruise. As we leave the canal, we can appreciate howwell this Dominator 64 handles. Once in the open waters, we canreally enjoy her stability and how smoothly she moves. The twin1200 hp powerful Man engines take us to planing speed in about20 seconds with the engines running at 2100, which she main-tains until only 13.9 knots, remarkable for over 35 tons of dis-placement. The trial is being carried out on calm seas. Shecomes about with little inclination and her turning radius at 26knots was about 50 meters with no need to change gears. Herlow noise level is also remarkable, in great part due to the designof the hull that reduces the impact of the waves. Her wake waswell extended and smooth. The structure never seemed atall fragile, not even at the strongest impacts; in fact sheseemed ready to tackle even tougher provocations. The work of architect Alberto Mancini has madeoptimum use of the space available and enhanc-ing it with excellent materials.

he title of this article comes from oneof the most famous lines in a cultmovie. Which one? Saturday NightFever. He is Tony Manero, played by John Tra-volta, and she, his girlfriend. Standing, balancedon the Verrazzano Bridge between Brooklyn andManhattan, Tony says, “Hey Annette, te gustalobster?” In our case, though, we’re talkingabout a lobster boat, and not the actual crus-tacean. The latest model is the 64 Fly. And itsbalance doesn’t come from being perched on

the railing of a bridge, but from how well the space has beenutilized both on deck and below, thanks to the hand of FulvioDe Simoni, the same designer of all the other Austin Parkermodels. While remaining faithful to the distinctive lines of a tra-ditional New England lobster boat, the 64 has an extra deck, provided by the fly. This means more space so that guests canspread out sometimes and not always be forced to spend timetogether. There are, for example, three lounge areas: on the fly-bridge, in the cockpit and the main saloon. There are two sun-decks, one at the prow and one on the fly. There are also plen-ty of dining options, since in addition to the dining areas in thesaloon and the cockpit, the table on the sundeck is largeenough to offer a valid alternative. The canopy that folds intothe frame of the cockpit can shade the entire area. No wasted space. The interior layout proves it. The beam widthmaster suite is located amidships. It has an en-suite bath, ofcourse, situated starboard, which has been fitted with a seriesof sliding doors so that it can be divided into three distinct areas, containing the shower, the toilet and centrally, the washbasin. This way the two lateral areas can be closed off leaving only the

washbasin in plain view. Since the space is developed vertical-ly and located starboard, there is a large window over the basinlooking out to sea, giving the room a wide-open feel. As yougaze out, you don’t feel like you are enclosed in a room, but outin the open. There is no space wasted in the other two cabins(a VIP and a twin) either, where a lot of space is utilized forwardrobes and cupboards. Navigational comfort also meansplenty of storage space. The master suite even features a walk-in closet. All three cabins have en-suite bathrooms with sepa-rate showers. The only defect is that the bed in the VIP cabincould be a bit bigger. At only 179 cm in length, some passen-gers may end up sleeping with their feet hanging off the edgeof the mattress. No one runs the risk of bumping their heads, though, since ceilings are over two meters high everywhere, even in the closet. Also important for space and comfort are theretractable stern platform and the tender garage. (cont. pg.128)Having a stern tender garage, besides being more practical,

means more space on the fly, since there is no need for a davit.

The testThe sea is as smooth as Tony Manero’s dance floor, but the 64Fly is not meant to dance, not even on the waves formed by thewakes of passing boats. The hull is deeply V-shaped and theprow is high enough not to mind rough seas. The electronicthrottle guarantees a gradual fuel supply. No jumps, no “gaps.”

Everything is perfectly calibrated, whichalso keeps her from accelerating too

brusquely. The two Man enginesare pretty powerful, though, because we reach planingspeed in only 14 seconds andtop speed in 45. She sure does-n’t perform like a lobster boat. At

full throttle we get up to almost 31knots, 30.8 to be exact, while con-

suming 470 liters per hour. Her cruisingrange is very wide because 1300 rpm and 13

knots are enough to plane, while the maximum she reachesis 2250. This means a difference of almost 1000 rpm, 27 knotsand 340 liters. You can opt for an easy-going, fuel-saving ride, just over planing speed or go for a faster, but more expensivepace. Fuel consumption is rather low in any case, particularlyat medium-range speeds. Her turning radius is not particularlytight, but she always stays stable. To complete a 360° turn attop speed, takes more than a 100-meter diameter. Her visibil-ity is optimum, even from inside, since the windscreen is at theright height and is very wide. The control console in the dinetteis set rather far back so that at speeds of 30 knots, you needto check the GPS to realize you are going that fast.

The fly, especially when you are moored in the harbor, offers more privacy.

The engine room is protected by a watertight door and around the two 1,200-hp Man there is

plenty of room for easier maintenance and inspections. All facilities are close at hand and easy

to inspect.

nnovation, competence, ability to lookbeyond the horizons and plenty ofresearch. With these ingredients Volvo Penta is con-stantly working to create the right products with the rightquality, at a fair price. Not only that, the "recipe" includesobservance of quality, safety, reliability and the environ-ment.As part of continuous improvement, this year the com-pany has made several innovations, which we illustratein detail.

Volvo Penta D11The new generation of D11 is born. It is based on the latesttechnology which has been further developed and optimizedfor marine use by Volvo Penta’s engineering team. The new engine has a peak power of 725 hp. It is compact andpowerful with new and improved design. In addition to a larger number of power classes, the in-line six-cylinder diesel engines have been boosted with a large numberof technical upgrades.«We have further enhanced our twin-entry turbo where eachexhaust pulse now is used maximally to provide charging pres-sure. This gives an extremely powerful torque even at lowrevs. The engine responds instantly to control commands andprovides a stronger acceleration», says Thomas Lantz, ChiefProduct Manager at Volvo Penta. The Volvo Penta D11 will become the natural choice for fly-bridge yachts and sport cruisers between 45 and 55 feet,

which weigh around 20tons and have highdemands on the enginetorque when they areplaning.Among the advantagesthere is the on-boardcomfort: «Thanks to anew and more efficientturbo and air filter withimproved noise reduction, theperceived noise levels arereduced. The design helps minimizethe on-board vibrations» says Lantz. Thanks to an optimized air and fuel pressureratio, which gives efficient combustion, the greaterpower is united with less of an impact on the environment.

Volvo Penta Ips 800 and Ips 950The current range increases the existing power (600 and 700Hp) with two new and reliable drive packages – IPS 800 andIPS 950 – both with high torque. They have power levels up to the equivalent of 950 Hp, betterdriveability and lower noise levels and emissions. The result is a highly fuel-efficient power package tailored for 40to 60-foot boats. The two transmission systems combine perfectly with varioustypes of installation and with the engine D11 provide powerand considerable resistance in the whole range of use.The driveability is great at both high and low speeds; besides, thanks to a new and more efficient silencer, a new turbocharg-er and an air filter with improved insulation, the sound levelshave been reduced by 2 dB and the on-board vibrations are ata minimum. The emission levels for Volvo Penta IPS are already about

IThe D11 series has been

expanded to be offered in

three power classes: 625,

670 and 725 Hp.

The D11 series complies

with the world’s most

stringent environmental

legislation, the U.S. EPA Tier

3, which comes into force in

2014. The particulate

emissions will then be 40%

lower compared with today’s

levels

To be approved according to

the Tier 3 requirements, the

levels of particulate

emissions must be reduced

by 40% and nitrogen oxide

emissions must be reduced

by 20% compared with the

previous Tier 2, which

means an emission ceiling of

loaded with newtechnology. The V8-430, in particular,

meets the US EPA require-ments by a broad margin and the V8-350 has been certified for Europe (Imci)and use on Lake Constance (Bodensee). With powers of 430 and 350 Hp they are compact and light:they weigh around 100 kilos less than any other engine in thecorresponding class on the market, resulting in very competi-tive weight/power ratio. At the same time they are heavy-duty,fuel efficient and, thanks to the new catalytic converter, emis-sion levels have been lowered. The VVT (Variable Valve Timing) optimises torques at lowrpms while maximising the effect at high rpms, resulting in fasteracceleration, increate top speed and smoother, better responsein the mid-range.The exhaust systems are protected and made of alluminium tolower the weight and their exhaust flow has been optimizedto achieve the highest performances. The engines and the exhaust systems are freshwater cooled,as standard. They are equipped with catalytic converters asstandard. Like all gasoline engines of the brand, they are fullyintegrated with Volvo Penta’s Evc electronic platform.

board, with push-buttons on the controls and touch-buttons onthe screens. It is the result of collaboration with Garmin, com-bining the Volvo Penta software and the Garmin 8000 displayseries. The displays are easy and intuitive to handle: the driverdecides what functions should be displayed on the screens andhow they should be distributed.A seconda del tipo e delle dimensioni dell’imbarcazione, è pos-sibile installare sul cruscotto uno o più display (con varie dimen-sioni, da 8 a 19’’). Depending on the boat type and size, one or more screens canbe fitted on the dashboard (in different sizes from 8 to 19’’). The system is fully integrated with the Evc (Electronic vesselcontrol) and when the boat is powered up all screens light upsimultaneously. All settings, including instrument dimming, arecarried out concurrently at the helmstation or on the flybridge.

Interceptor SystemIt is an efficient and easy to use trim system, good for boats ofmore than 40-feet.It is a fully electrical system (no hydraulics) with powerful ser-

vos that is integrated in Volvo Penta’s electronicplatform Evc (Electronic Vessel Control).

The trim blades generate lift and drag thattranslates into movements on the boaton all three axis depending on needs. The first effect of the IS (InterceptorSystem) becomes apparent in theacceleration phase and when theboat is about to plane: the bow ofthe boat is lower compared withboats with traditional trim systems. It planes already at 20-25 knots(instead of the 30-35 knots ofboats with traditional trim system).

This means greatly improved forwardview during the whole plane phase, but also a

considerably shorter acceleration/planing phase with reducedforward visibility. Also during sharp turns the visibility improvment is considerable:sight distance of about 300 m and a sector of visibility of about5,100 mq.The design is super-compact and the Interceptor blades arealways applied in even pairs, two or four.It is totally maintenance free, because the blades have a self-cleaning function. They are made of plastic and will not sendout an electrical current.

The interceptor systemis integrated in the EVCplatform and extremely

easy to handle; just push theTrim assist button on theengine control. This activatesautomatic mode, however, ifyou prefer to trim manually, you can use the trim buttonson the control to trimaccording to your ownpreferences.

A major effect of the IS,and boat trimming in

general ,is the improved fuelefficiency. With IS in automaticmode, fuel efficiency is alwaysoptimized, irrespective of theconditions.
