President’s messageThis year marks BCIT’s 50th anniversary. Over 50 years, we have built a strong and well-deserved reputation for our focus on students, quality programming, and dedicated faculty and staff.

Although much has changed since we first opened our doors, our students today share a lot in common with our first graduating class. Students who come to BCIT are ready: to learn, to strive, and to succeed. They are ready to embark on the remarkable journey that is a BCIT education.

When you walk our campuses, you notice a tremendous sense of activity. Things are really happening here, and it’s not just the lectures and labs you’d expect. Our students are learning from industry-experienced instructors, connecting with future employers, starting companies, and working on relevant hands-on projects and research. BCIT students aren’t studying to start a career someday; they’re already well on their way.

And that’s our intent: to create an environment that is applicable to the next stage of your life, with skills that will be of use throughout. At BCIT, you don’t just learn “hard skills.” You’ll also gain confidence, as well as skills in teamwork, interpersonal communication, time management, and so much more.

Thank you for considering BCIT as part of your future.

Maquinna Residence has been my home for the past three years. The facilities are great and you just can’t beat the convenience of living a few steps from class!

The residence advisors and student housing staff are very helpful and supportive. From potluck dinners to movie and bowling nights, they made me feel welcome, helped me to make new friends, and made me a part of the student community.

Ceilidh Millar Broadcast and Online Journalism, Diploma of Technology, 2013

Stay healthy, be active. BCIT Recreation Services offers many ways to re-energize. You can keep fit when you want, whether it’s in the weight room; on the squash, racquetball, and tennis courts; on the climbing wall; on the track; or in the multi-purpose studio on Burnaby Campus. You can also mix it up with kayaking, Pilates, or yoga classes. If you enjoy team sports, BCIT has intramural leagues for basketball, dodgeball, floor hockey, ice hockey, soccer, and volleyball.

I loved that the private firms and industry were always in contact with the instructors.

That meant all new information from industry came through in real time through the instructors to the students. That kind of current training transfers to industry.

My job is pretty unique. I get to do a lot of different things. We build submarines and hard suits. I get to design circuit boards, system components as well as write software for controllers that are inside the submersibles.

BCIT exposed me to a huge variety of things, which made me well-rounded so I could attack problems at different angles.
