On behalf of the Committee our apology for the delay in issuing this newsletter.

I wish to extend a very warm welcome to all our new families and hope you have settled into life at Blacktown City Swimming Club. It is pleasing to see the ever increasing numbers on a Friday Club night where we are now averaging close to 70 swimmers per night compared to mid 30’s only six months ago.

This year is a very special year in the Club’s history as we celebrate 55 years. This makes Blacktown City one of the oldest swimming clubs in NSW. During the year you will hear more about how we intend to celebrate this major milestone.

The past three months has been a very busy yet successful time for the Club and some of the achievements are listed below:

• Xmas party – with well over 100 people in attendance, those who attended had a great evening with many raffle prizes (thank you everyone who donated), inflatables for swimmers of all ages and a delicious meal;

• Twilight Meet – was held on 9 January. This was the second year the Club held this swim meet and its popularity is amazing with over 1,400 entries. The afternoon and evening ran smoothly with numerous compliments received from visiting Clubs. No doubt this will be a permanent fixture in the Club’s calendar;

• State Age Championships – the Club was well represented with Matthew Aston-Brien qualifying for Age Nationals at the end of March in the 200m Backstroke. Matthew has subsequently qualified for 100m Backstroke;

• Age Open Water – was held in Mooloolaba Qld this year. Due to the rough conditions, the course was reduced from 2.5 km to 1.25 km (meaning the swimmers needed to complete 4 laps). The Club was again well represented with 4 swimmers. Unfortunately, two of our swimmers were overcome by the conditions and did not finish. Both Madeline Franjic and Matthew Galea competing in the first National Open Water event and first major event in the ocean finished in a respectable 32nd position. No doubt they are better for the experience;

• Metro South West 5-8 Years Meet – over the past 10 years this event has been dominated by two major Clubs in the Area. It’s with great excitement to advise all members that Blacktown City has regained this shield and we don’t intend to relinquish it easily in the future. With many young and talented swimmers coming through our Club we are well positioned for the future. Look out for an article in the Blacktown Advocate; and

• Easter Club Night – was a roaring success with families donating many eggs for our raffle. Marshalling on the night was a challenge as I think the kids were more interested in the raffle to see if they won the chocolate.

Upon return from holidays the Club is holding a Short Course Swim meet at Emerton Aquatic Centre on 24 April. If you haven’t already entered, please visit the Club’s website to submit your entries. All families will be required to assist with this event.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t all been good news to report and earlier this year we heard that life member Val Fenbow was ill during a recent overseas holiday, which resulted in the loss of a leg. It was pleasing to hear from her husband and fellow life member Gordon that she is now in a rehabilitation hospital, which will take several months and returning to full spirits. Our best wishes on a speedy recovery.

Thank you to everyone for supporting the Club and I look forward to the following 12 months.

SPEEDO SPRINTS HEATS AND FINALS

Back in February we had 4 swimmers who attended the National Age Open Water Championships in the 5km events in Mooloolaba Qld. Our representatives were Kerri Tiems, Natasha Szabo and our first timers Matthew Galea and Madeline Franjic.

As the weather wasn’t the best over the weekend and due to the rough conditions, the course was reduced from 2.5km to 1.25km which meant the swimmers needed to complete 4 laps around the course. Unfortunately, two of our swimmers were overcome by the conditions and did not finish.

Our first timers Madeline Franjic and Matthew Galea competing in the National Open Water 5km events finished in 32nd place. What an amazing effort and experience for both of them, we are so very proud of you.

Thank you to Coach Haibin who also went to Qld to support and cheer the team on and to their families.

2016/17 CLUB CAPTAINS

Congratulations to our 2016/2017 Captains, The swimmers voted for who they would like to be BCSC Captains. We are extremely proud of these 4 young teenagers they are fantastic kids that represent our club proudly. They truly are awesome in inspiring our younger swimmers within the BC Club.

Kasey Mooy Club CaptainMy name is Kasey Mooy and I am 13 years old. For as long as I can remember I have always loved being in the water. Mum stuck me in Learn to Swim classes at 18 months old here at the Blacktown pool under MySwim and since then I have progressed through the levels and now with BCSC squad Programme I am in the Gold Squad.

At the age of 5, I joined BCSC and attended regularly Friday Race Nights and was introduced to the world of competitive swimming. I have been attending carnivals on a regular basis ever since.

I am here to support our younger swimmers. I love watching them get excited about their times, achieve their goals and watch them grow into amazing little swimmers.

Matthew Galea Club CaptainI learnt to swim from 10 months of age and have been swimming at carnivals since I was 5.

As my time as a swimmer I have represented Blacktown City Swimming Club for the last 3 years at National meets and I have won over 30 State Medals across all 4 strokes, but the thing I love the best is coming to training each day to spend time with my friends.

I love helping out on Friday Club Night and getting in the water to help our 4 & 5 year olds swim their first races with BCSC. I really enjoy attending the carnivals and helping the younger swimmers warm up and encourage them to do the best they can in a race.

I love that here it doesn’t matter if you are 5 , 8, 10 or 14 everyone really loves to hang around with each other and we are all loud and proud of our club.

Madeline Franjic Club Vice CaptainMy name is Madeline Franjic. I am 14 years old and have been swimming with BCSC since the age of 5.

I have recently represented the club at State Open Water, State Age Long Course Championships & National Age Open Water Championships.

I look forward to supporting our younger swimmers and assisting the club in any way I can.

Cameron Smith Club Vice CaptainCameron attends Tyndale Christian school in Blacktown .He is Year 9 and his favourite subjects are Engineering and ICT, plus he has to love Maths as Mum is a Maths teacher.

He learn to swim at Blacktown under Chris Myers MySwim and has been a member of Blacktown city swim club since he was 4. That makes him the longest currently still swimming member of the club.

His older brother Brendan (formerly a coach at Blacktown) and sister Courtney were long time members of the club. He loves swimming.

All the funds raised go towards the weekly hire of the pool, staff wages, insurances and the day to day operating expenses that BCSC incur. Without the kind and generous donations we receive and also without the support that all our members give by purchasing raffle tickets we would not be able to continue.

Easter Raffle This year we had a HUGE Easter raffle with over 30 prizes on offer. Thank you to all the families who donated Easter Eggs. We sold the tickets for $2 each and made a profit of over $400. I hope everyone enjoyed eating all their chocolates.
