WHO IS CEDIA? CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) is the international trade organization for the home electronic systems industry, which spans three continents and has over 3,500 members. Its respected education program is at the core of all the Association’s work and the curriculum keeps installers and designers up to date with the latest techniques and knowledge in order to maintain the highest standards in the industry. CEU POINTS For CEDIA Members, attending both CEDIA’s own courses and those presented by manufacturers, you can be rewarded with important CEU’s (Continuing Education Units) to help main‐tain this valued accreditation. Many CEDIA courses at this year’s Expo have a CEU allocation attached to them. This is to help certified individuals meet the requirement of gaining 30 CEU points within the three‐year period following gaining their certified status. Please note that CEU points are only valid once certification has been gained.

CEDIA EDUCATION ‐ SPEAKERS James Chen James has over 20 years experience in the AV industry, including custom design, hands‐on installation, retail and distribution. Director of Sales and Operations at Kordz, James is currently providing advice to the CEDIA technology council on their “HDMI Best Practices” initiative for international publication. In his capacity as a CEDIA Certified Instructor, James has presented various courses on HDMI and the new HDBaseT technology to members of our industry around the world. Kordz is both an HDMI and HDBaseT Adopter and is a leading manufacturer of cables and accessories for CEDIA partners and members. Peter Aylett Former Director of Professional Development for CEDIA across Europe, The Middle East, Africa and South Asia. With over 20 years of residential electronic systems experience, Peter developed the technical, education and certification programs that both define the industry, and raise the standards of the professionals working within it. Peter has taught and spoken at events across five continents and delivers high level technical training, as well as presentations, to inspire both public and professionals alike about the trends which make this industry so exciting. A father of two, Peter is passionate about using technology to truly enhance our lives. He loves red wine, food and camping trips with his family, but dislikes cleaning his mountain bike.

Rich Green Rich Green has been an active professional in the audio/video industry since 1978. His system‐integration company, Rich Green, Ink, serves the ambitious homeowners of Silicon Valley. Rich sits on the CEDIA Advisory Board and was a three‐term board member. He currently chairs the CEDIA Technology Council and recently served as Secretary on Executive Committee. Rich is also a founding member of the Palo Alto Strategy Studios, a consultancy based at Stanford University creating new forms of technology‐enabled meeting facilitation and conversation tools for global leadership on strategic issues. Utz Baldwin Utz’s primary focus as the CEO of CEDIA is to foster relationships with other associations and industries, speaking on behalf of the organization and industry, and guiding external communi‐cations based on the needs of CEDIA members. His career spans more than 20 years in the consumer electronics industry with the majority of time spent in the custom installation field. A member of CEDIA’s Board of Directors from 2003‐2008 and past Chairman, Baldwin has long been engaged in the association’s efforts to create opportunity for its members. In his role as CEDIA Chairman, Baldwin was responsible for the overall success of carrying out the strategic plan that guides the association and the Board of Directors. He has spearheaded many CEDIA initiatives, ranging from authoring education content and speaking on behalf of the associa‐tion in both interviews and keynote speaking opportunities to actively participating at industry‐related tradeshows on behalf of CEDIA. As past chairman of CEDIA’s inaugural Electronic Life‐

styles® Forum and developer of the Registered Outreach Instructor program, he has demonstrated a vested interest in reaching out to the home design and construction industries and their supporting associations. He has also been at the forefront of CEDIA’s global endeavors, serving on the Board of Directors for Integrated Systems Europe and delivering education in Latin America. He has presented to NAHB, ASID, AIBD, and at events such as CEDIA EXPO, and EHX.


Using Engineering Standards to Specify the Correct Display Device Time: Wednesday 10.30am—12.00pm Presenter: Peter Aylett When designing a Home Cinema system, whether it is a dedicated space or integrated into a living area it is impor‐tant that the video system delivers both an immersive ex‐perience and an accurate picture. Specification of the cor‐rect equipment to do this is an engineering exercise based on industry standards and best practice. This seminar will introduce you to those standards and show you how to use them in your system designs. Every attendee will come away with both practical tools for doing the calculations as well as a better understanding of the importance of correct engineering in cinema design. Introduction to a Business Plan Time: Wednesday 10.30am—12.00pm Presenter: Utz Baldwin The purpose of this course is to provide participants hands‐on experience in developing a business plan. It reviews the typical components of a business plan including a mission statement, objectives, strategies and tactics. Participants will work with a template for completing a business plan that allows them to succeed in the electronic systems con‐tracting industry. At the conclusion of this course, partici‐pants should be able to: • Explain the elements of the business plan • Create measurable goals for their business • Consider an exit strategy for their company • Describe what goes into each element of a business plan and why they are important to the success of the business.

Creating Effective Sales Presentations Time: Wednesday 1.00pm—2.30pm Presenter: Utz Baldwin The purpose of this course is to see the effective sales tech‐niques demonstrated and have the opportunity to practice and evaluate their presentation skills. At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to: • Tailor sales presentations to match customer needs and emotional logic • Distinguish between effective and ineffective selling and presenting techniques • Identify ways to incorporate messages that help up‐sell or cross‐sell products • Practice developing a sales presentation that will impress customers and concisely communicate the message.

Client Discovery ‐ The Foundation of System Design Excellence Time: Wednesday 1.00pm—2.30pm Presenter: Rich Green Unless we truly understand what our clients both want and need, it is impossible for us to design systems that truly enhance those customers’ lives. This seminar will introduce the client discovery process, discuss some different meth‐ods of completing it successfully and give you tools and templates for documentation that you can successfully in‐tegrate into your company’s processes.

Cinema Design Gallery ‐ Ideas For Excellence Time: Wednesday 3.00pm—5.00pm Presenter: Peter Aylett For many years now, CEDIA has hosted its own excellence awards across its three offices globally. These awards show‐case the best that CEDIA members companies have to offer and show the world what is possible. This course will be picking six or seven of these awards winning systems across different price points and examining what makes them great. This is your opportunity to get both inspiration and technical direction from some of the most experienced and recognised cinema designers in The World.

HDMI System Design and Application incorporating HDBaseT Time: Wednesday 3.00pm—4.30pm Presenter: James Chen HDMI is the most common domestic connection format in today’s market place with 100% use on AV devices, and the only choice 3D and digital 1080p. While HDMI has become a far more reliable single cable solution for pairing a couple of consumer products, there still exist challenges when im‐plementing more complex systems, particularly custom whole‐home distributed video systems using HDMI. Careful system design and interoperability testing is required be‐fore system installation, when connecting multiple displays, spanning long distance with passive cables or active extend‐ers, and incorporating HDMI matrix switches. We will also discuss the troubleshooting aspects of HDMI as well as some of the latest technology such as HDBaseT for extend‐ing and future proofing your Audio Visual installation.

Designing Future Ready Homes ‐ Industry Partner, Members and the Press Time: Thursday 10.30am—12.00pm Presenter: Peter Aylett CEDIA has recognised the importance of raising awareness of the industry to design professionals such as architects, interiors designers and developers. To this end we have been working closely with industry design professionals and will be inviting their members and the press to join us at a special VIP event. There will be an introduction to CEDIA and an insight into what the Association represents. This will be followed by a short presentation ‘Designing Integrated Future‐Ready Homes’ that will outline the benefits that technology can bring to both the built environment and to people's lives. Though largely non‐technical, by the end of the presenta‐tion you should have a broad overview of the differing technologies that make up today's Integrated Home, and the benefits of partnering with a CEDIA member company to deliver an incredible experience to your clients.

Future Technologies: The inside scoop on Silicon Valley Time: Thursday 10.30am—1.30pm Presenter: Rich Green Rich Green's world‐famous presentation on future tech‐nologies will both surprise and haunt you! Rich blends the perspectives of Anthropologist, Audio/Video Integrator, Silicon Valley insider and Futurist into a deep view of the future and explores emerging business opportunities that will help you thrive in the new economy. System Design is the Key to Profitability Time: Thursday 1.00pm—2.30pm Presenter: Peter Aylett What is your company’s design mission statement? How do you ensure that in every project this is adhered to? What quality assurance processes to you have for your project designs? This seminar will discuss these questions, look at how they effect the profitability of a company and deliver processes that you can integrate into your company to help ensure that the systems that you design both meet your clients’ needs and are highly profitable to your company.

Creating a Robust Functional Specification Time: Thursday 3.00pm—4.30pm Presenter: Peter Aylett A robust Functional Specification is the cornerstone of en‐suring that both clients’ expectations are met, and that a project is profitable to your company. It is the document that describes what the system is going to do in a non‐product specific way and enables your design and installation teams to deliver a sys‐tem that stays true to the original sale. This seminar will discuss what makes a robust Functional Specification as well as giving you some templates that will allow your company to create its own format for this essen‐tial project document.

3DTV ‐ The Technologies and The Realities Time: Thursday 3.00pm—4.30pm Presenter: Rich Green 3DTV is upon us and our clients are showing great interest in having these magical, immersive video experiences in their homes. Rich will explore the full range of current 3D technologies from passive to active and from glasses to glasses‐free. We'll also take a peek into the exciting future of 3D. This seminar will discuss the various technologies, calibration options as well as provide you with practical design ideas and best practices for creating ultimate 3D video systems.

Making The Transition From AV to System Integration Time: Friday 10.30am—12.00pm Presenter: Peter Aylett Technology in The Home can be broadly split into Entertain‐ment, Communications and Automation. This seminar will examine how to take the first steps from being an AV in‐staller, into the exciting and profitable world of becoming a systems integrator that offers a 'One Stop Shop' for a cli‐ent's technology needs in The Home. We will be discussing how to always remain client focussed and be looking at how to grow a company both in terms of scope and skills sets to offer your clients not just an AV system, but the in‐credible user experience that a fully integrated home can bring.

User Interface Design ‐ Human Centered Design and Usability Time: Friday 10.30am—12.00pm Presenter: Rich Green The single most important element of design is the user experience. This class will explore the art and science of electronic systems design from the point of view of the end user. We will cover human factors and touch points, ergo‐nomics, operational metaphors and usability test‐ing. Exciting new user interface technologies will also be included. Rich will share his recent discoveries in speech interfaces, multi‐touch, and even emerging field of "Zero Touch".

Advance Networking Infrastructure Design Time: Friday 12.30pm—3.30pm Presenter: Peter Aylett This seminar examines the advanced home network from the designer’s perspective. It covers hardware, infrastruc‐ture, and configuration issues needed for a dependable, high performance network. This course is intended for pro‐fessionals already possessing a working knowledge of net‐working and IP. Topics include: Bandwidth, QOS, and infrastructure. Physi‐cal network design & configuration, wired vs wireless. De‐signing to the client’s requirements

Understanding The Apple Ecosystem and Airplay Time: Friday 12.30pm—3.30pm Presenter: Rich Green Apple is changing the way that both consumers, and now our industry, think about media and media distribution in The Home. This seminar will look at the current Apple eco‐system and examine how it can deliver a compelling media management and distribution system. We will also be covering how our industry needs to em‐brace the Apple Airplay standard and looking at ways that we can offer solutions based on this technology.

ESTII Electronic Systems Technician 2 Certification Time: Friday 10.30am—1.30pm Presenter: Proctor EST2 is equivalent to the old Level One Certification. The CEDIA certified Professional EST 2 is an individual with at least 12‐16 months of experience and wishes to advance their extra low voltage career. This person works under the direction of a supervisor, has a firm understanding of what to do and how to do it, but not always why? This person is assumed to have become proficient at most Prewire and Trim duties and is in training in all other areas. As a result the majority of questions on this exam are “Application” based meaning the candidate will need to be able to “apply” existing knowledge to a specific problem. This per‐son has completed the appropriate Level 200 CEDIA course‐ware (or equivalent). CEDIA Electronic Systems Technician Workshop is also strongly recommended. The exam com‐prises 125 multiple choice questions to be completed in three hours. Major content areas covered by the examination are as follows: > General Technician Roles and Responsibilities > Equipment Mounting > Communications (telephony and data) > Integrated Control Systems Setup > System Verification and Testing
