What are STAR Events?

• STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation.

How do you compete?

• STAR Events offer individual skill development and application of learning through the following activities:

to Family and Consumer Sciences and/or related

from academic subjects. Participants must prepare

Chapter Service Project a team event,

and Consumer Sciences content and skills to

address and take action on a community need.

Culinary Arts—a team event, recognizes

participants enrolled in occupational culinary

arts/food service training programs for their

ability to work as members of a team to produce

a quality meal using industrial culinary

arts/food service techniques and equipment.

Early Childhood

Early Childhood—an individual event, recognizesparticipants who demonstrate their ability touse knowledge and skills gained from their

enrollment in an occupational early childhoodprogram. Participants must prepare a portfolioand a resource container. On site, participantsmust plan and present to evaluators an activity

related to the theme in response to a case studyprovided during the event and an oral presentation

describing the activity.

Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship—an individual or team event,recognizes participants who develop a plan fora small business using Family and ConsumerSciences skills and sound business practices.Participants are evaluated on the business planand an oral presentation and are not requiredto have implemented the plan. The businessmust relate to an area of Family and ConsumerSciences education or related occupations.

Environmental Ambassadors

Environmental Ambassador—an individual orteam event, recognizes participants who address

environmental issues that adversely impacthuman health and well-being and who activelyempower others to get involved. Participantswill research one of the five current topics,

investigate areas where they can make a difference,develop and carry out a stewardship

project for their home, school, or community,and educate others in their school or community

about the problems, effects, and solutionsregarding the environmental concern.

Fashion Construction

Fashion Construction—an individual event,

recognizes participants who apply fashion

construction skills learned in Family and

Consumer Science courses to create a display

using samples of their skills.

Fashion Design

Fashion Design—an individual event,recognizes participants who apply fashion

design skills learned in Family and ConsumerSciences courses to design and market clothing

styles. Participants will develop a clothinglabel, research the intended audience, anddesign the label’s first 6-piece collection.Students will exhibit knowledge of all the

aspects that surround design, including designbasics, fabric choice, and pricing.

food product scenario as identified by national

FCCLA. Participants will demonstrate their

knowledge of food science, nutrition, food

preparation safety, and product marketing.

• In order to participate at the Regional level you must be a member of ACHS FCCLA.

• If you win at region, you will move on to compete at the state level in March. If you are the winner at State competition you will go on to represent the state of Kentucky this summer in Orlando, FL, at Nationals.

Leadership Projects

• You are required to complete a leadership project over the course of the trimester.

• We will have allocated days throughout the trimester to work on your leadership project.

• If the project you select is a team event you may work with up to three people. If it is an individual event, we will need to talk about a potential group.
