Dear Student,

As the President of EF International Academy, I've seen firsthand the impact of an outstanding high school education on a student's life. These are years in which foundations are built, and connections are made — when the decision to invest in yourself can bring great dividends. That success — that future — is now before you.

It's true that attending high school in North America or in the United Kingdom will help you gain admission to top universities. But choosing the right high school is a critical step in the process.

EF International Academy prepares you personally and academically for tomorrow's challenges and opportunities. As an IB World School, EF International Academy is a place where students play an interactive role in the classroom — where there is time to explore passions beyond one's coursework, and a belief that a well-rounded perspective is vital to success later in life. Indeed, with students from 60 nations, EF International Academy is a school with a larger world view — it’s a place where you’ll discover new places and perspectives while meeting interesting people every day.

Our faculty are committed to developing the full potential of each student. Thisdedicated faculty, however, is only part of the equation. Our students constantly motivate one another to success. This is a school where you will find inspiration in your fellow peers just as often as you find it in your teachers and your academic curriculum.

I thank you for taking time to learn about our school, and I encourage you to contact our EF International Academy Admissions Office to find out more about our Programs. Though we have four campuses, we are truly one global school community and I look forward to seeing what role you will play in it.

“When you think globally, you will achieve bigger things.”– Dameli, Kazakhstan

The diversity on the EF International Academy campus promotes global concepts — ranging from literature to economics — to play out in an inclusive classroom setting. For instance, students don't simply read about history. They discuss the world's political systems and history in real-time with fellow classmates from Germany, China, Canada, the United States and more. Students are offered a variety of different viewpoints, and encouraged to ask, research, and analyze the information to form their own opinions about the subject matter.

“I constantly find myself thinking about world issues in a new way," says Eric, an EF International Academy Torbay student from Spain. "It doesn't just happen in the classroom. It happens every single time I talk to my friends and classmates.”

EnrichingStudent Life Students play a prominent role in every aspect of the EF International Academy campus, from leading classroom discussions to launching student clubs and competing in athletic events. On any given day, students can be found organizing charity events, performing musical recitals, or debating global issues amongst an international group of teachers and friends.

Supervised independenceEF International Academy New York encourages personal growth byproviding a supportive and safe environment for students. Facultymembers live in student dormitories as house parents to providearound-the-clock supervision and offer a helping hand whenneeded. Life in the dorm relies on an environment of mutual trust and respect, an environment where students learn that theirindependence comes with expectations and responsibilities. Ona day-to-day basis, the interaction between students and houseparents is friendly and relaxed. Students may seek help withschoolwork in the lounge or discuss current events over dinner inthe cafeteria. On a more formal level, each student meets weekly with a faculty advisor to discuss schoolwork, college applications and overall welfare. It is our goal that students develop into independent, selfmotivated individuals, and the dorm experience contributes to thisgoal.

Living in a dormFor students, living with peers from other countries and from other age groups is a unique opportunity. Younger students look up to juniors and seniors, and as a result, older students develop a sense of leadership and responsibility when it comes to mentoring younger dorm mates.

Home away from homeMost of our students are living away from home – and theirhome country – for the first time in their lives, and their well-beingis our primary concern. Students quickly begin to cherish theindependence and camaraderie that come with dorm life. Theyshare meals together, participate in evening study groups withclassmates, chat informally with house parents and unwind onweekend afternoons. Dormitory life creates an environmentwhere students grow, expand their horizons and form everlastingfriendships. It’s not long before they consider themselves part of one big family.

Residential LifeOur students become part of a close-knit community, like onebig family, where they receive support and supervision and formenduring friendships.

AthleticsEF International Academy New York boasts a number of athleticfacilities, including an indoor competition swimming pool, a fitness center, basketball courts and sports fields. With students from around the globe, it’s no surprise that soccer is a popular sport, along with swimming, track and field, volleyball, and basketball. Many of our students enjoy participating in other activepursuits, such as rock climbing, yoga, dance classes, tai chi, distance running, or jogging along the Hudson River.

School clubsOther popular clubs and activities at EF International Academyinclude yearbook, student council, debate, cooking club, fashiondesign, choir, photography, movie club and chess club. We encourage students to pursue their interests, and with help from theactivities office, we support student initiatives to organize new and exciting extracurricular opportunities.

Model United NationsWith Model United Nations, students from EF International Academy and other schools simulate United Nations proceedings. In doing so, they learn about international politics, diplomacy, public speaking and current events. Our students play the roles of diplomats and simulate a number of different UN scenarios. For instance, they might manage a crisis in the Security Council or debate resolutions in the General Assembly. With our international student body, a studentfrom Germany, for instance, may play the roll of a Brazilian diplomat. This adds complexity to our Model UN proceedings.

Student ActivitiesWhether they’re rehearsing choreography for an upcoming schoolplay, swimming laps in the pool or debating mock resolutionsas part of the Model United Nations, our students energeticallydedicate themselves to a variety of activities outside the classroom.

ArtsTheater provides a wonderful opportunity for students to express themselves. Performing on stage, in front of an audience, builds confidence and develops public speaking skills. Students act, sing, dance, perform music, and design costumes and stage settings.Producing a show allows students to experience the thrill of completing a tangible project, from beginning to end.

Student Life

“EF gave me a panoramic view of life.”– Yousef, Iran

For Yousef, one of the most meaningful aspects of his experience at EF International Academy has been the chance to participate in community service opportunities through the school’s Creative Action and Service Program (CAS). From the International Day of Peace to Children in Need, Yousef tries to participate in at least one service project each month to make the most of his time at the school — and on the planet. Students havehad the opportunity to volunteer in Nicaragua to build houses for those in need, travel to Morocco as part of Duke of Edinburgh and also participate in a charity fundraiser in Central Park, New York.

“I found my voice here.”– Gina, Taiwan

Naturally soft-spoken, Gina didn’t have much opportunity to build her social confidence in her traditional high school in Taiwan. All of that changed when she reached the interactive classrooms of EF International Academy. Now in her second year of EF’s International Baccalaureate Program, Gina has benefited from the school’s small class sizes and encouraging atmosphere. She is active in drama club, a cheerleader, and even had a dancing role in the school’s drama production “Grease.”

“I’m learning through leadership.”– Renan, Brazil

Soccer had long been a part of Renan’s life growing up in his native Brazil. That’s why it meant so much to him when he was named captain of the competitive soccer team at EF International Academy New York. Not only does the school’s athletic program allow him to fulfill his personal passion for soccer, the position of captain is an opportunity for Renan to gain important leadership, communication, and team-building skills that will stay with him through university and beyond.

“I now see the world in a new way.”– Alice, Rwanda

Alice aims to pursue a career in international relations following university, and there is no better place to prepare her than EF International Academy. When she’s not sharing perspectives on politics with classmates from around the world, she’s developing her own policy statements and speeches in the school’s Debate Club and Model UN groups. Outside the campus, Alice explores the endless number of political lectures, museums, and libraries in the New York City area, further preparing herself for success at an elite university.

A Cornerstone of Support — EF All the Way Support is at the heart of EF International Academy experience. From the initial admissions process in your home country through graduation and beyond, EF’s global network of admissions counselors, faculty, university placement advisers, and alumni keep students and their families informed connected, and prepare for success.

At Home Local admissions counselors help students identify the right campus and academic Program best suited to their goals. Once admitted, admissions counselors continue to serve as liaisons between the school and family back home so that parents always have a personal contact who can speak to them in their native language regarding their child’s progress. On CampusTeachers are the most powerful source of support on every EF International Academy campus. Speaking 45 languages, with experience living and working in 50 countries, their backgrounds are as diverse as the students they teach. They know first-hand what it’s like to live or study in another country, and take great effort to help students feel comfortable and excel in their learning environment. Personal advisers help manage the demands of a rigorous academic curriculum with the excitement –and challenges – of being away from home. Advisers meet with their students one-on-one every single week to make sure that they are thriving in the high school environment. Mock examinations, constructive feedback, and progress reports are a regular part of academic life.

Residence life Dorm parents offer 24/7 guidance to students living in the EF International Academy dormitories, whether they need help with homework or support in developing the confidence they need to achieve their goals. Dorm parents live on site with the students the entire academic year.

Host parents offer a safe and secure environment to students who choose to live in host family accommodation. All host families are carefully selected and have hosted international students for many years.

University Advising University placement advisers guide students through the university placement process beginning their first month on campus. Advisers conduct weekly meetings with students, as well as ongoing consultation with parents, to identify the best universities for attaining individual goals.

graduation and BeyondAlumni are an equally important part of the EF experience. EF International Academy Alumni Association ensures that students stay connected to the invaluable network of global peers they create during their stay. Alumni also help current students secure internships and further guide them through the university advising process. Alumni currently work around the globe in top international companies like PwC, KPMG, Ernst & Young and CERN.

“Faculty are more than teachers here.” – Taylor, Vietnam

Since coming to EF International Academy, Taylor says he has learned just how important one’s teachers are in contributing to the learning experience. He has found his science teachers to be especially inspiring, allowing students to explore scientific concepts hands-on, creating their own accelerometers and spectroscopes and testing key concepts like the speed of sound and the index of refraction. What’s more, teachers are always available to answer questions — both inside and outside the classroom. With plans of pursuing a career in chemical engineering, Taylor believes the personal approach to teaching — and learning — has given him a greater understanding of science and will ultimately lend an invaluable edge in university placement.

“I never realized how important teachers are in determining the learning experience,” Taylor says. “EF International Academy showed me how amazing learning could be.”

The EF International Academy experience is a personal one. With one-on-one guidance and support from teachers and staff at EF International Academy, students choose their own courses, their own academic program, and ultimately their own pathway to success. At the heart of that is a personal teaching method that also guide students every step of the way.

Together with your local admissions counselor, you will complete EF International Academy’s proprietary Personal Learning Profile, which will help us determine not just your learning style, but the academic program most compatible with your personality, and the career path most suited to your academic strengths. The learning profile is a blueprint that will help you navigate your future, at EF International Academy and beyond. The results of your learning profile are shared with your family, as well as your core group of teachers and advisers, so that all can work as a team to ensure success on your chosen path.

A Personal Approach to Learning

“My admissions counselor knew which program was right for me.”– Anastasia, Russia

Before coming to EF International Academy, Anastasia’s local admissions counselor in Russia worked with her and her parents to determine the courses and academic program best suited to her goal of becoming a doctor. They also determined that Anastasia would best thrive in a host family, which offered a quiet, supportive environment ideal for focusing on one’s studies. The extra support that Anastasia received before starting school made her and her parents feel secure in their decision to attend EF.

“Every decision was made with my welfare in mind,” she says.“I knew I’d find success when I arrived here.”

“I have two families now.”– Steffen, Germany

What Steffen has enjoyed most since arriving at EF International Academy is the wealth of other students who are passionate about their studies and focused on the issues impacting the world. In addition, he says he has found great support in his host family and the rest of the EF community, all of whom are equally committed to his personal success.

“My parents’ support gives me the power to continue,” Steffen says. “But my host family, teachers and friends give me the power to succeed.”

“I can accomplish anything.”– Mimmi, Norway

- Sheel, IndiaMimmi has been involved withalmost every student club onthe EF International Academy campus, from studentcouncil to theater to basketball.Part of the reason she’s feltso comfortable doing so, shesays, is her adviser, art teacherRebecca Millhouse, and the ongoing support from her other counselors and teachers. With Ms. Millhouse’s encouragement, Mimmi has taken advantage of every opportunity that’s come her way. She’s even secured an internship in Manhattan to further explore her passion for entrepreneurship.

“Every time I get a new idea fora project, or something I wantto pursue, Ms. Millhouse encourages me to go for it,” Mimmi says. “She believes in me. That support makes all the difference.”

Chris Nicholls / Sociology teacherCAS and TOK Coordinator

Chris Nicholls teaches sociology for the A-level program at EF Torbay. He also manages the Creativity Action and Service (CAS) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) components for the school’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. As such, Nicholls has come to understand the strengths of both curricula. Inspired by the IB’s focus on critical thinking, he’s even developed a similar course for his A-level students, encouraging them to develop the same inquisitive, analytical worldview promoted in IB classes.

In line with the inclusive spirit of the EF International Academy Torbay campus, Nicholls has also worked to include all students — IB and A-level — in CAS opportunities. In the past, he’s helped organize everything from a sponsored walk on Dartmoor to raise money for the National Trust to smaller projects like Shelter Box (for disaster relief). He’s also helped launch a music club, where students can share their love of guitar, piano, and drums — and gain a much-needed break from their studies.

International Baccalaureate Diploma (Grades 11- 12)

Students follow six courses, ensuring breadth of knowledge in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences, mathematics and the arts. In addition, the program has three core requirements that challenge students to apply their knowledge and understanding: the extended essay independent research project, the Theory of Knowledge course, and a Creativity, Action, and Service component.

Students take written examinations at the end of the program, which are marked by external IB examiners. They also complete assessment tasks throughout the program.Unlike many other IB World Schools, EF International Academy is truly international in

nature, allowing students to live the ethos of the IB program every single day. In the IB’s Creativity Action Service (CAS) requirement, students are able to undertake service projects relating to their home countries or those of their EF friends. Students have organized events for Amnesty International, built houses in Nicaragua, and even tutored students in their school community. The hands-on aspect of the program allows them to gain an even deeper appreciation for the issues and places they are studying.

International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) is an internationally recognized qualification that prepares students for university study. The prestigious IB Diploma is grounded solidly in the concepts of inquiry, internationalism, and understanding. The IB aims to develop “inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”

Eric / Spain

Hoping to pursue a career in economics, Eric used his extended essay as a way to further explore one of today’s real economic issues — whether Spain should stay in the Euro Zone. Throughout the research process, he reached out to real economists in the field, creating a personal network of professionals and mentors, and gaining an edge for the university application process. “To truly be part of society, you must consider your place in it,” he says. “I love that I can do that through EF International Academy’s IB Program.”

Student Profile The international equivalent of the GCSE, the IGCSE program has long been a primary method of qualification in the United Kingdom and now offers international students a renowned pathway to A-Levels, International Baccalaureate Diploma, and North American High School Diploma.

Students who enroll in grades 9-10 in the EF International Academy New York campus follow IGCSE curriculum and form an even stronger foundation in the American education system, better preparing them for success in the International Baccalaureate curriculum.

IGCSE gives teachers two additional years to understand students’ strengths and learning styles, and to help them prepare for university admissions.

The Curriculum Students following the IGCSE curriculum study a core group of subjects (English, math and science), as well as an elective group of studies (foreign language, humanities, information technology, and more). Students can choose from a wide variety of subjects based on personal interest or career goals.

The IGCSE bases qualifications on individual subjects, meaning that one will receive an IGCSE qualification for each subject he or she successfully completes.

IGCSE students are externally assessed based on oral and written exams at the end of the Program. EF International Academy students have consistently scored among the highest in the world.

Developed by the University of Cambridge, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is the world’s most popular, globally-recognized qualification for students 14-16. EF International Academy offers the IGCSE curriculum for Grades 9-10 at its New York and Vancouver locations, and for Secondary Education at its Torbay campus.

Eric / Taiwan

Eric was on track to attend one of the top universities in Taiwan, but he felt that gain-ing a strong foundation in the Western education system would better prepare him for a career in medicine or engi-neering. He began his studies at EF New York in Grade 9 (IGCSE) two years ago and has since found tremendous success in the school’s IB Program. The extra classroom time at EF — as well as the school’s small class sizes and personal attention — increased his confidence on many levels. He has enjoyed participating in activities like Model UN, basketball, the student literary magazine and student council. Eric hopes to attend MIT to study Chemical Engineering.
