World-Class University Placements

Finding the right university is an important goal for our students, and guiding students through the university application process is a crucial part of our mission. Students work closely with admissions advisors and gain admittance to the world’s best universities.

A record of achievement

EF International Academy students have consistently matriculated at the world’s most prestigious universities. In the UK, they have been admitted to each of the nation’s top 30 schools, and half have been placed in the UK’s top 10 schools, including Oxford, Cambridge and London School of Economics. In the US, our students have gone on to study at leading centres of learning, including Harvard, Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania and University of California, Los Angeles. Other students pursue international educations at institutions such as Zurich University and Cologne University. 90% of our students earn placement at their first choice university, and we ensure that every graduate is enrolled in university to pursue a high quality academic degree.

University admissions advisors

EF International Academy’s team of university admissions advisors is dedicated to guiding students through the entire university application process. Deciding which university to attend is one

of the biggest decisions in a student’s life. Our aim is to make the process smooth, understandable and successful. We work individually with each student to develop an application strategy, and advisors provide guidance about exams, requirements, deadlines, essays, interviews and financial assistance. Getting into the right university involves hard work, a strong academic record and good test scores. Our university admissions advisors are there to help each student every step of the way.

Mastering entrance exams

Performing well on entrance exams and aptitude tests is a critical part of the application process. We provide training to ensure students are well prepared to do their best on exams such as the BMAT, UKCAT and LNAT in Great Britain and the SAT and SAT Subject Tests in the US. Students consult preparation materials, receive thorough instruction and take practice tests. As a result, they consistently earn high scores on aptitude tests and language exams.

A lifetime of success

As well as guiding our students through the university admissions process and preparing them to succeed in higher education, we believe their long-term wellbeing, at university and beyond, is important. Each year we receive updates from alumni who credit EF International Academy with influencing and shaping their lives. We enjoy following the progress of our graduates and are pleased when the education they received with us helps them to succeed in whatever field or career they choose.

EF students get into the UK’s top 30 universities

The top 30 universities in the United Kingdom (as ranked by The Times) all have one thing in common: EF students have been offered placement at each of them. Join us and be part of our success.

Care and Support: Nurturing Healthy and Happy StudentsThe physical and emotional wellbeing of our students is our primary concern. At EF International Academy we work individually with each student to ensure they gain a healthy and fulfilling experience.

personal advisors

Living away from home and managing the demands of a rigorous academic schedule can be challenging for adolescents. Teenagers who are developing into responsible and independent adults have unique needs, which is why each student has regular contact with a personal advisor who monitors their overall welfare. In addition to discussing matters such as school work and university admissions, personal advisors make sure each student is healthy and emotionally balanced. Advisors develop close relationships with students and are able to offer guidance and support when needed.

Health services

Making sure students are healthy, in body and mind, is an important part of ensuring their academic success. EF International Academy has on-campus health centres and nurses, and partnerships with local doctors, so that students are able to seek prompt help if they get sick or have other health issues. In addition, our schools have qualified counsellors who are able to address emotional concerns, should they arise. We maintain regular contact with parents in the event of serious health issues.

Nutrition and exercise

The best way to be physically and emotionally healthy, and develop beneficial lifelong habits, is to receive proper nutrition and lead an active lifestyle. At our on-campus cafes and dining halls, we serve a variety of nutritious foods so students eat well-balanced meals. As an international school, we often plan delicious menus based on cuisines from around the world. Each campus has an array of exercise equipment and athletic facilities, and we have athletic directors on staff who organise sports and teach students about exercise and healthy lifestyles.

regular supervision

Students are surrounded day and night by responsible adults. Teachers, staff and house parents, who live in residences with students, make sure students follow rules – such as strict sign-in requirements in residences – and are safe. Students know there is always a trusted adult they can turn to, 24 hours a day.

Maintaining contact at home

For many students, this will be the first time living abroad. We understand the anxieties and concerns students and their parents may have when embarking on this important educational step. We provide additional support through EF educational counsellors, whom students meet before departure. Educational counsellors are available to speak to students and parents, in their native language, at any point during their time at EF International Academy. Our staff work closely with educational counsellors to make sure students’ needs are met.

Encouraging Good Choices

Navigating university admissions

When applying to university, it’s important to find the right match. This requires self-assessment and introspection. Students work closely with university admissions advisors to discuss aspirations, interests and career goals. Together, they formulate a personalised university admissions strategy that also takes into consideration the student’s abilities, grades and test scores. Admissions advisors guide students through the process of completing applications, taking standardised tests, writing personal essays and conducting interviews.

Applying to university is often a period of discovery and growth for students. The admissions process teaches them to make an important decision in a mature and thoughtful way. We encourage students to take the lead in the process, and admissions advisors help them navigate by offering valuable support and advice.

career guidance

A number of our students have well-defined career goals. Many plan to attend medical school or law school or pursue training in fields such as engineering, economics or design. We provide career guidance to ensure they’re well positioned for highly competitive university programmes and beyond. Among other things, we help arrange internships and work experience in students’ chosen fields, and we tutor them so they’re prepared for relevant entrance examinations.

Secondary education is a time for teenagers to explore different fields and pursue diverse interests, and many don’t have well-defined professional aspirations. That’s healthy and normal. Advisors work individually with each student to discuss different career goals and possibilities. Whether a student has

concrete plans or is enthusiastic about a multitude of opportunities, the career guidance process plays an important role in choosing the right university.

promoting responsibility

To succeed at EF International Academy, students must develop into independent and self-sufficient adults capable of managing their own schedules, workloads and priorities. This independence comes with responsibilities. We foster an environment that encourages students to make sound decisions, and we offer advice and guidance along the way.

Advisors, teachers, staff and house parents are always on hand to supervise students and provide direction and even-handed discipline when required. We employ an honour system. Students are expected to treat others with respect and exhibit honest and truthful behaviour at all times. They are held accountable for any lapses in judgement. Each school develops a concise code of conduct so students understand what’s expected of them. Our students develop into world citizens, but they are also citizens of EF International Academy, with all the privileges and responsibilities that entails.

As our students develop into independent adults, we provide them with comprehensive guidance to encourage direction, responsibility and sound decision-making.

www.ef.com/academy 17

Page 18: EF International Academy India

Your Home Away From HomeStudying abroad is a challenging and rewarding experience. Our students become part of a close-knit community, like one big family, where they receive support and supervision and form enduring friendships.

Home away from home

Most of our students are living away from home – and their home country – for the first time in their lives, and their wellbeing is our primary concern.

Students quickly begin to cherish the independence and camaraderie that come with life at EF International Academy. They share meals together, participate in evening study groups with classmates, chat informally with house parents and unwind on weekend afternoons. Our school community is an environment where students grow, expand their horizons and form everlasting friendships. It’s not long before they consider themselves part of one big family.

Modern campuses, 24-hour security

Our campuses feature the latest technology and amenities, including wireless internet access, state-of-the-art language and science laboratories, student lounges, libraries, diverse dining options and athletic facilities. We provide around-the-clock

security, and residence directors live on campus and are available 24 hours a day.

living in a residence hall

The boarding experience encourages independence and self-sufficiency. For students who stay in residence halls, which are available in New York and Oxford, living with peers from other countries and age groups is a unique opportunity. Younger students look up to older ones, and older students develop a sense of leadership by mentoring younger dorm mates.

Supervised independence

Faculty members live in residences and serve as house parents. They provide around-the-clock supervision and offer a helping hand when needed. Life in a student residence relies on an environment of mutual trust and respect, where students learn that their independence comes with expectations and responsibilities. On a day-to-day basis, the interaction between students and house parents is friendly and relaxed. Students may

18 EF International Academy | International Private High Schools

Page 19: EF International Academy India

ask house parents to help them with school work in the lounge, or they might discuss current events with them over dinner. Ultimately, the house parent is an authority figure who oversees the welfare of students and makes sure they’re safe.

Homestays

For students who prefer to live in a welcoming home environment, we offer homestays with local families. Students in Torbay live in homestays, and this option is also available in Oxford. As part of the homestay experience, students become de facto members of the family; they share meals, leisure time and household chores with other family members. In most instances, we place two students in the same household, making sure their native languages are different so that English is the common tongue.

We carefully select and thoroughly screen each family, and most of our families have hosted students in the past. We consider them part of the extended EF International Academy community. The homestay experience allows students to live in a safe and

comfortable family environment where they are cared for by adults who are like second parents to them. Often times, the host family has children of their own, and students develop close ties with their host siblings. Living in a homestay immerses students in the local culture, which can benefit those who want to attend university in the same country.

parental involvement

We encourage parents to stay involved and maintain regular contact with their son or daughter. We regularly send home grades and written reports, and we welcome parents to our campuses by hosting “family days,” which provide an opportunity for parents to visit residences, meet teachers and explore the surrounding area.

Parents at home can use the EF online portal to check students’ grades, follow school news and read up-to-date notes from teachers.

www.ef.com/academy 19

Page 20: EF International Academy India

A Vibrant Student Life

Whether they’re rehearsing choreography for the school play, charging down the football pitch or debating mock resolutions in the Model United Nations, our students energetically dedicate themselves to a variety of activities outside the classroom.

leading active lives

We encourage students to pursue diverse interests and maintain fulfilling and well-balanced lives outside the classroom. Activities coordinators at each school arrange full programmes of sports, arts, after-school clubs and excursions. Some of the most rewarding and valuable experiences in students’ lives take place when they apply their creativity and enthusiasm to such activities.

Arts

Students participate in a number of artistic endeavours, from photography to painting, music and theatre. Theatre is particularly popular with our students, as it allows them the opportunity to work together on a large and creative project. Performing on stage builds confidence and develops public speaking skills. Students act, sing, dance, perform music, and design costumes and stage settings. Producing a show allows them to experience the thrill of completing a tangible project, from beginning to end, on an immovable deadline. Many students pursue an interest in the visual arts; others enjoy participating in bands, music ensembles and singing groups.

Sports

Each school organises different sporting and athletic opportunities for students. As an international school with students from over 40 countries, it’s not surprising that soccer is one of the most popular sports on all our campuses. Other favourite sports include swimming, athletics, volleyball and basketball. Many students remain physically active in other ways, by participating in activities such as tai chi, distance running, rock climbing, yoga, inline skating, bicycling or jogging. Our New York campus has substantial sports facilities, playing fields, tennis and basketball courts, and an indoor competition swimming pool.

After-school clubs

We offer a wide range of extracurricular activities at each school. Popular clubs and activities at EF International Academy include debate, student council, the school newspaper, cooking club, fashion design, photography, choir, movie club, chess club and Model United Nations. The activities office supports student initiatives to organise new extracurricular opportunities.

20 EF International Academy | International Private High Schools

Page 21: EF International Academy India

Model United Nations

Model United Nations is especially popular at our New York campus, perhaps because it’s not far from the UN headquarters. With Model United Nations, students from EF International Academy and other schools simulate United Nations proceedings. In doing so, they learn about international politics, diplomacy, public speaking and current events. Our students play the roles of diplomats and simulate a number of different UN scenarios. For instance, they might manage a crisis in the Security Council or debate resolutions in the General Assembly. With our international student body, a student from Germany, for instance, may play the roll of a Brazilian diplomat. This adds complexity to our Model UN proceedings.

Excursions and trips

Our campuses are located near centres of culture and learning, and we take advantage of this proximity by organising trips and exposing students to a variety of cultural and educational opportunities. In New York, teachers accompany students on

trips to places such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the United Nations headquarters, the Museum of Natural History, and Broadway and Off-Broadway theatrical productions. Students also enjoy weekend excursions to cities like Washington D.C. and Boston. In Oxford and Torbay, students visit cities like London and Cambridge. Oxford is home to countless attractions, including the Ashmolean Museum, the Bodleian Library and the Museum of History. Torbay has interesting sites such as Kents Cavern, considered the most important Stone Age cave in Britain, and Dartmoor National Park.

EF International Academy Alumni Association

Involvement with the school community doesn’t stop after graduation. Throughout the year our local offices organise reunion parties, visits to schools and informal meetings for former EF International Academy students.

EF International Academy in the United StatesStudents in the United States receive a rigorous and well-balanced education while experiencing a vibrant high school culture that is uniquely American.

High School in America

In the American school system, secondary education, called high school, lasts for four years – in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. Most high school students are between the ages of 14 and 18. EF International Academy students in the United States attend school at our New York campus. Those between the ages of 14 and 16 take the High School Programme Grades 9-10. After that, in grades 11 and 12, they choose to pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme or they follow a course of study that leads to an EF International Academy diploma.

academic records and exam scores are critical for those seeking admission to top universities. The High School Programme Grades 9-10 serves as the ideal foundation for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

A comprehensive curriculum combined with true high school spirit

High school in America is more than what happens in the classroom; it’s a full-time experience that leads to the development of well-rounded individuals. Students pursue the rigorous and world-renowned International GCSE curriculum, which places an emphasis on languages, mathematics, science and other core academic subjects. Sports and after-school activities are important, and after class students can be found on the athletic fields, in the theatre or elsewhere, pursuing their interests. The full-time boarding school experience in New York means students socialise and work together throughout their entire stay.

After completing grades 9 and 10, students may choose to carry on with a

traditional American high school education in grades 11 and 12, where they continue their broad-based education and prepare for American universities. EF International Academy in Great BritainThe school system in the United Kingdom is regarded as one of the best in the world, and EF International Academy immerses students in Britain’s rigorous academic culture.

Secondary education in the UK

In the British school system, students follow a rigorous course of study to prepare for exams that lead to certificates of academic achievement. Students usually pursue General Certificates of Secondary Education (GCSEs) when they are between 14 and 16 years old. Afterward, between the ages of 17 and 18, they attend what’s known as a sixth form college, where they study for advanced level examinations (A-levels) or pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma. EF International Academy in Great Britain offers GCSEs, A-levels and the IB Diploma.

International GcSE programme

The International GCSE (IGCSE) is the world’s most popular international curriculum for students aged 14 to 16. It leads to a qualification that is recognised around the globe, and it prepares students for A-levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The IGCSE programme teaches students to be inquisitive and apply their knowledge to new situations. Cultural awareness and language skills are important parts of the

IGCSE curriculum, which is designed to encourage creative thinking, intellectual enquiry and problem solving – skills that increase students’ ability to succeed at the next level of their education.

International GcSEs in Great Britain

The IGCSE meets the same high academic standards as the UK’s traditional GCSE, and it is recognised around the world as equivalent. IGCSEs are specifically designed for international students, and the curriculum gives schools and teachers the flexibility to address students’ requirements by offering different subjects and focusing attention where it’s needed. Many consider IGCSEs in certain subjects, such as mathematics and science, to be more rigorous than traditional GCSEs.

A-levels

Students who have passed the GCSE stage and wish to pursue a traditional British education and pathway into UK universities take A-levels. They choose three or four academic subjects and spend two years revising for important exams before going to university.

choosing IGcSE and A-level subjects

EF International Academy works individually with students to help them select subjects that match their interests, skills and university objectives. English, mathematics and sciences are popular subjects, but students also study foreign languages, humanities, information technology and other subjects.

International Baccalaureate diploma

Many students in the UK choose to pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma, which prepares them for universities in Britain and around the world.

British universities

Britain is home to some of the best universities in the world, and EF International Academy students have a record of being admitted to the nation’s top institutions, such as Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial College London.

A-Level Programme

Universities in Britain are recognised around the world for their excellence, and students who want to attend top-ranked UK universities usually sit for A-level examinations.

what are A-levels?

Students study for advanced level examinations, know as A-levels, for two years, usually between the ages of 16 to 19. Preparation for A-levels is often done at a specialised school, such as EF International Academy, known as a sixth form college. The first year of sixth form college is known as the lower sixth while the second year is called the upper sixth. The students take national exams at the end of the first year and again at the end of the second year. Performing well on these A-level examinations is critical because universities use A-level grades to decide which students to admit.

why study A-levels?

Universities in the UK are regarded as some of the best in the world, and a standard way to get accepted to a UK university is to take A-level examinations. Students sit for A-level examinations in order to progress to the top-ranked universities in the UK. High A-level grades are also essential for competitive undergraduate studies such as medicine, law and engineering. Moreover, A-levels are widely recognised by universities around the world as a high achievement, so doing well on A-levels opens doors to limitless possibilities.

A-levels at EF International Academy

Performing well on A-levels requires a high level of English competence and knowledge of the British learning culture. A significant amount of independent study is required. Many international students have less experience with this British method of learning. EF International Academy’s teachers specialise in helping students perform well on A-levels. To assure students stay on track, they are regularly tested. Our tutors monitor students’ monthly test results, performance, homework and approach to studying.

choosing A-levels

Students choose A-level subjects based on their academic skills and their future course of study at university. Typically, students take four academic subjects during their first year. Most take three subjects during their second year, though some students take more. For instance, a student might study biology, psychology, economics and sociology during the first year of A-levels and psychology, economics and sociology during the second year. Prospective medical students would choose A-level subjects such as biology, chemistry and statistics, whereas prospective lawyers might study

government and politics, philosophy and law. Choosing an appropriate combination of A-levels gives students the best chance of being admitted to top universities.

A-level grades

Typically, a student wishing to attend university prepares for A-level examinations in three or four different subjects. They are advised to choose subjects that will help their future career and university applications. Examinations are independently graded ranging from A* (the highest) to E.

Examples of A-level subjects at EF International Academy

• Accountancy • Biology • Business studies • Chemistry • Computer studies • Economics• Further mathematics • Geography • Physics • Law• Information technology • Mathematics• Media studies • Philosophy • Psychology • Sociology• Statistics • Film studies

• ask challenging questions

• become independent, self-motivated learners

• develop a strong sense of their own identity and culture

• refine their ability to communicate with and understand people from other countries and cultures

• grow into responsible world citizens

How does the curriculum work?

The curriculum contains six subject groups together with a core consisting of three separate parts (see diagram below).Students usually study one subject from each of the six different groups. Normally three subjects are studied at higher level and the remaining three are studied at standard level. All three core parts are compulsory and are central to the philosophy of the programme.

course contentThe IB Diploma Programme has broad-ranging academic content. Students must study literature, either in their own language or in English, humanities,

mathematics, science, and the arts. All students write a 4000-word Extended Essay based on a topic of personal interest. They also follow the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, which teaches them how to approach their studies with a critical eye.

Serving a higher purpose

Students also participate in a programme called Creativity, Action, Service (CAS), which encourages them to participate in community service and engage in creative projects outside the classroom. Among other things, EF International Academy students have travelled to Nicaragua to help build a school, and students regularly conduct service projects in their local communities. By working outside the classroom, students gain valuable real-world experience and develop a broader perspective about the world.

How is the diploma assessed?

At the end of the two-year programme, students are assessed internally and externally to measure individual performance against stated objectives for each subject.
