Orlando, FL - Valencia College trustees agreed to hold tuition for associate-degree classes at its current level for next fall. At $99.06 per credit hour for Florida residents, Valencia’s tuition and fees are currently the lowest among Central Florida’s state colleges, including Seminole State College and Polk and Brevard community colleges, and are about half the cost of a state university.While Gov. Rick Scott vetoed a

tuition increase for Florida colleges on Monday, Valencia’s board could still have raised tuition on its own by up to 10.5 percent to make up for years when the college had not raised tuition as much as it was allowed.“I want to compliment the staff

and the administration on doing something that’s really remarkable: holding the line on costs and still achieving remarkable results,” said vice chair Lew Oliver.Last year, Valencia leaders also

declined to raise tuition although authorized to do so by the Florida Legislature.“The college will never be cheaper

John Quiñones informed the members and guests at the monthly meeting of the Osceola County Bar Association, held on Friday, May 17, that the first Legal Aid Program has been initiated by the bar, with support from City Government and the County Administration. The L.A.S.O. Program (Legal Aid

Society of Osceola County) will serve the residents of Osceola County with a non-profit organization and will be housed in the Old Court House across the street from the downtown Kissimmee Courthouse and many services will be available online. Initially the Legal Aid Society will be primarily focused on family law, including divorce cases, domestic-violence injunctions and mediation. The society would also handle veterans affairs and credit-card mediation cases.The keynote speaker at this meeting

was Eugene Pettis, the President-Elect of the Florida Bar Association. Pettis is the first African-American to be named as the Florida Bar Association President in its large history.In his remark, Pettis said legal

education has changed, and the graduating lawyer needs to be prepared to serve the profession from day one. “The use of technology with our clients, and within our courts,

makes our services more effective, and we need to educate our members to be able to take advantage of these tools.” Referring to diversity, Pettis considers that diversity in the profession must be not only with regard to race and gender, but also geographical, inclusive of all of Florida, not only Tallahassee, Tampa or Miami.“Our moral duty and obligation is

High School student Raidel Moreno is a standout among all AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students from around the world. His essay has been selected by the AVID organization as the winner in the AVID Speaking Contest, from more than 1,500 submitted from students across the globe highlighting individual accomplishments within the program in their own words. As a result, Raidel has been given the prestigious honor of speaking at the AVID 2013 Summer Institute in Orlando on July 2 at the JW Marriott/Ritz.

Raidel will share his essay, which was written to the theme of “In Pursuit of Success: Dream Big,” as an inspiration to students and adults alike. Seven years ago, Raidel and his mother set sail with 32 other people on a tightly-packed small boat from Cuba in search of new opportunities in America after five unsuccessful attempts.

“AVID has been the family and support that I had given up when I decided to start over in this country with my mother,” wrote Raidel. “After being in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) for four years,

I had never had the opportunity to academically challenge myself. AVID helped me progress to honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, while providing a structured environment. I have taken 10 Honors and 9 AP courses, and I’m now in the top 15 percent of a 447 student class. I am proud to say that I have truly discovered my potential and have gotten accepted to Colorado College with a full ride. Without the help and guidance of my AVID teachers, peers, and tutors who instructed me and supported me when I most needed it, I would have never made it so far.”

Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a systemic instructional system designed to increase the number of first-generation college-goers who enroll and succeed in higher education and in their lives beyond high school. AVID-trained educators teach students academic and social skills to help them develop the habits and behaviors needed to succeed in rigorous curriculum.

Currently, the AVID program is in 17 schools in Osceola County.

Governor Rick Scott leaded an Enterprise Florida trade mission to Santiago, Chile with more than 100 representatives from Florida businesses, higher education institutions, and other organizations to expand investment with Chile and create job opportunities for Florida families. The trade mission included nearly 20 Florida manufacturers and exporters which were matched with Chilean importers through the U.S. Embassy’s Gold Key Program. Chile is Florida’s seventh largest trade partner with nearly $7.7 billion in bilateral trade. Florida-origin exports to Chile have expanded by 53% in the last two years, and the state has experienced a two-way trade growth of 262% since the implementation of the U.S.-Chile Free Trade Agreement in January 2004.Governor Scott said, “Florida is

positioned to be the number-one state for international trade. We have a diverse workforce, low taxes and a top-ranked infrastructure. As

Florida’s economy continues to grow, trade missions are an important way to strengthen the state’s presence in

Kissimmee to participate in ‘World’s Largest swimming Lesson’

Kissimmee, FL - The City of Kissimmee Parks, Recreation & Public Facilities Department will participate in ‘The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson’ (WLSL) on Tuesday, June 18, 2013. The Bob Makinson Aquatic Center will serve as an official host location for the global event. The record attempt for The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson will take place at 11:00 a.m. ET.Team WLSL holds the

current Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson, which stands at 24,873 participants representing 16 different countries across five continents. They are once again, for the fourth consecutive year, coordinating for tens of thousands of children and adults at aquatic facilities

The FDA does not test cosmetics before they are sold in stores. The FDA can take action against companies who break the law.Some products are both cosmetics

and drugs. For example, an antidandruff shampoo is a cosmetic because it cleans hair, but it is also a drug because it treats dandruff. These products must meet the standards for both cosmetics and drugs.Some cosmetic makers use the

term “cosmeceutical” to refer to products that have drug-like benefits. The term has no meaning under the law.You can tell if you’re buying a

cosmeceutical by checking the container to see if the first ingredient listed is an “active ingredient.” The active ingredient is the chemical that makes the product effective, and the
