Hispanic Business Council granted scholarships

Osceola County, FL – On October 9th, 2012 the Hispanic Business Council (HBC) of the Kissimmee/Osceola County Chamber of Commerce granted over $3,000 in scholarships awards to Valencia College – Osceola Campus students in commemoration of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.The three scholarships awarded

to full time students where: María Melendez - $1,000 AS - BS in Business Administration;Jazmine Figueroa - $1,027 - AS in Nursing RN; and Rosie Jiménez - $1,027 - AA Associate in Arts Degree.To be eligible for these scholarships

the students must be Hispanic, Osceola resident and enrolled in a business related program at Valencia College. The scholarship can be for new or returning students, with financial needs. Students must have applied for FAFSA. The scholarship awards may be use for tuition, books, and or fees. scholarships by the HBC came from several fund racing events including a special yearly Latino day in ICE!, at the Gaylord Palms Resort where 50% of the admission is donated back to the HBC for the students scholarships. Condado Osceola, FL – La Votación Adelantada comenzará en el Condado Osceola el 27 de octubre y continuará por ocho días, hasta el 3 de noviembre.Los electores inscritos pueden votar

por adelantado durante este periodo en la oficina de la Supervisora de Elecciones o en la biblioteca de Kissimmee, St. Cloud, Celebration, Poinciana o Buenaventura Lakes. Early voting in Osceola CountyOsceola County, FL – Early Voting

in Osceola County will kick off on October 27 and run for eight days until November 3.Registered voters may vote early

during this time frame at the Supervisor of Elections’ Office or the Kissimmee, St. Cloud, Celebration, Poinciana, or Buenaventura Lakes’ libraries. We have extended the Early Voting hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday through Saturday and from Noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday.“Early Voting offers our voters more

opportunities to vote,’’ said Supervisor of Elections Mary Jane Arrington. “We will be open the maximum number of hours allowed. Historically, at least 50 percent of the people who vote in an election vote early. We are anticipating that Early Voting for the General Election will follow that trend as well.’’Arrington said even though the

Legislature reduced the number of Early Voting days from 14 to eight, Early voting still offers voters more options to vote.“If someone lives in Celebration but

works in St. Cloud, they have several different places they could vote their ballot. They could go to the St. Cloud library to vote, they could come to our

office, or if they pass by the Kissimmee library they could vote there or they could always vote at the Celebration library as well. Our Early Voting locations are conveniently placed throughout the county,’’ Arrington said.Arrington has also implemented a

new program this year where voters can go to the Elections Office web site and check the wait times at the Early Voting locations.“If a voter wants to go to the

Kissimmee Library but only has a set amount of time right then, he or she can go online to our web site and see what the wait time is at that library or any of the other Early Voting sites,’’ Arrington said. “This is just one way we are working to make the voting process easier for voters.’’To check the wait times, a person

de Directores de la Cámara de Comercio de Kissimmee/Osceola anunció que el pasado viernes, 12 de octubre de 2012 su Presidente Mike Horner presentó su renuncia efectivo el 31 de enero de 2013.Horner ha sido un líder

transformador para la Cámara y la Junta quiere agradecerle sus excelentes logros. Horner ha dirigido la Cámara de Kissimmee por los pasados 15 años. Durante los 90 días de transición, el Sr. Horner permanecerá como Presidente de la Cámara.En adición al anuncio

de su renuncia, Horner, también dio un discurso de 30 minutos, que recopilaba sus más importantes logros. Estos incluyeron la creación de varios Concilios de la Cámara, OLE, donde líderes de negocios dedicados a negociar legislación para traer más fondos e incentivos con el fin de mejorar el Condado Osceola, incluyendo escuelas, negocios, educación, transportación, infraestructura y más. Uno de los concilios creado

por Horner fue (ORAC), Concilio de Área Turística de Osceola, que se convirtió en la voz representativa de la industria del turismo en Osceola, especialmente en la 192, incluyendo hoteles,

Feria de Empleo Hispana de la Florida Central y la Exposición de Negocios Hispanos, creado por el fundador del HBC Guillermo Hansen con la ayuda de Horner. A través de los años el concepto ha cambiado de Conexión Hispana a El Sabor de Osceola, hasta lo que conocemos ahora como Business Under the Stars (Negocios bajo las Estrellas).Hace 13 años Horner, junto

con Hansen, se presentó ante la Comisión del Condado

Condado Osceola cedió el evento al HBC y la Cámara de Comercio, y todavía hoy sigue siendo posible gracias a la iniciativa de Horner. El pasado sábado 12 de

octubre, se celebraron 21 años de Viva Osceola, el festival gratuito más grande y más antiguo del Condado Osceola y Sur de Orlando. Si no fuera por Horner y Hansen, el evento de Viva Osceola hubiese acabado hace 14 años, cuando otra entidad no pudo manejar el festival. El HBC y la Cámara de Comercio han hecho posible que este festival se siga celebrando.Como Representante de

Estado, Mike Horner, también demostró su apoyo a la comunidad hispana, llevando iniciativas como la del HBIF y asegurándose que los hispanos de Osceola no se quedaran sin representación en Tallahassee. Todas estas iniciativas han

Kissimmee, FL – The Kissimmee/Osceola County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors announced on Friday, October 12, 2012, the notice of resignation of Mike Horner as President for the Kissimmee/Osceola County Chamber of Commerce on January 31, 2013. Mr. Horner has been a

transformational leader for the Chamber and the Board wants to thank him for his outstanding service. Horner has successfully led the Kissimmee Chamber for the past 15 years. During the 90 days transition, Mr. Horner will remain President of the Chamber.In addition to announcing his

resignation, Horner also gave a 30 minute briefing of his most significant accomplishments. These included the creation of the Chamber’s Councils, OLE, a group of chambers and business leaders dedicated to lobbying the legislation to bring more funds and incentives for the betterment of Osceola, including schools, business, education, transportation, infrastructure and more. One of the councils created by Horner is (ORAC) the Osceola Resort Area council that became the voice representing the tourism industry of Osceola, especially on the 192 corridor and included hotels, attractions, restaurants and shopping centers. “The majority of

the community is not aware of how Horner was an important key in supporting the Hispanic Community”, said Guillermo Hansen, Director and Founder of the Hispanic Business Council.Many of his initiatives are unique

to the Kissimmee/Osceola County Chamber of Commerce and in many cases are not available in similar chambers. Due to the #’s of Hispanics in Osceola County, Horner made an effort to address their needs.Gala Osceola

was created 14 years ago as a way to recognize the Hispanic Business Achievements and those that in one way or another supported the HBC. The first Gala Osceola became a record breaking event in Central Florida bringing close to 800 people, and featured International Artist Tito Nieves (which at the time had his hit single “I like it Like That.”)In 1999 the first Hispanic Job Fair

in Central Florida, and the Hispanic Business Expo was created by the Hispanic Business Council founder, Guillermo Hansen, along with the help of Horner. Throughout the years the concept changed from Conexión Hispana to El Sabor de Osceola,

to what we know now as Business Under the Stars.13 years ago Horner, along with

Hansen, went before the Osceola County Commission to ask for economic support to bring the Hispanic Business Initiative Funds (HBIF) to Osceola County and provide services to Hispanic Businesses.

They also started the Hispanic Business Development Center, which later became the Small Business Development Center, and brought the University of Central Florida Small Business Development Center to the Chamber providing

support to small businesses. Seven years ago the Community

Liaison Office of Osceola County Government created Three Kings Day in Osceola, after its second year Osceola County, turned Three Kings Day in Osceola to the HBC and the Chamber, this was also accomplish with the help of Horner.Last Saturday, on October 12th,

Viva Osceola celebrated 21 years as the oldest and largest free Hispanic Festival in Osceola County and South Orlando. If it wasn’t for Horner and Hansen, Viva Osceola would have ended 14 years ago, when another entity couldn’t manage the festival any

longer. The HBC and the Chamber came to the rescue.As a State Representative, Mike

Horner, also showed his support to the Hispanic community by supporting initiatives like HBIF funding and making sure that Hispanics in Osceola were not short changed in Tallahassee. All of these initiatives and events

have helped the Hispanic Community to grow, celebrate their culture, develop businesses, and be heard. At the Board of Directors meeting,

Mr. Horner offered the following statement: I would like to thank the Kissimmee/

Osceola County Chamber of Commerce for fifteen wonderful years. I love the Chamber and take pride not only in the countless businesses we have helped, but I take enormous satisfaction in the community we have helped build.I am concerned that my presence

has become a distraction from the important mission of the Chamber. As CEO, the Chamber’s welfare is my top priority; therefore I am tendering my resignation as President of the Kissimmee/Osceola County Chamber of Commerce.I am grateful for the faith the

$40,000 in Scholarships Will Help Mexican-American Students in Central FloridaOrlando, FL – A donation from the

Consulate of Mexico will help create $40,000 in scholarships for Mexican-American and international students from Mexico attending Seminole State College of Florida, Valencia College and Daytona State College.A total of $20,000, which will

be matched by the institutions’ foundations, was awarded to the colleges during a ceremony at the Orlando Mexican consulate on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Seminole State will receive $8,000, and Valencia and Daytona State will each receive $6,000.“We appreciate this donation from

the Mexican Consulate, which will provide crucial scholarship support for students of Mexican descent at Seminole State,” said John Gyllin, executive director of the Foundation for Seminole State College. “We look forward to continuing our relationship with the consulate and cultivating other partners that will assist our growing Hispanic population at Seminole State.“We are so grateful to our

community partners like the Mexican Consulate. Through their good work, we are able to offer scholarships and student support for those in need,” said Michelle Matis, vice president and chief operating office for Valencia Foundation. “Valencia’s student population is 30.5 percent Hispanic, and it is wonderful that scholarship funding is available to these emerging leaders in our local community.”The funding is part of the Institute for

escogidos, en parte, por la cantidad de estudiantes México-americanos que asisten a los colegios y los programas que ofrecen, incluyendo estudios del Idioma Inglés. Las becas pueden ser utilizadas para pagar matrículas y otros cargos relacionados a los estudios, útiles y libros. Ambos Valencia y Seminole State

nemours Children’s Hospital Dedication CeremonyOrlando, FL- Before Nemours

Children’s Hospital officially opens to patients and families on Oct. 22, the new, state-of-the-art facility in Lake Nona Medical City held its Dedication Ceremony and Light Up Nemours event on Thursday, Oct. 4. Nemours is bringing unique pediatric specialties to the state and the region.

The Dedication Ceremony was a private event that honored the Central Florida parents who helped design the hospital and featured a brief program, which included a parade of nearly 100 children who have already benefited from Nemours’ presence in Central Florida. It ended with a group of children running through a wall of

‘silly string’ and into the hospital for the first time. At sunset that night, Central Florida

saw one of the most dramatic new additions to the region’s skyline for the first time: the iconic colored lights in the Nemours’ patient rooms. During the private Light Up Nemours event, children “flip” gigantic light switches

at an event held in partnership with OUC. With the hospital so close to the airport and S.R. 417, these lights are sure to become a recognized feature of the evening skyline as you fly into OIA. The colored lights are a unique element in the patient rooms – giving children the ability to choose the color of their room and a sense of control over their environment.

Ceremonia de Dedicación del Hospital nemours ChildrenOrlando, FL- Antes de que el

Nemours Children’s Hospital abra oficialmente para los pacientes y sus familias el 22 de octubre, la nueva moderna facilidad en Lake Nona Medical City llevó a cabo su Ceremonia de Dedicación y su evento de Encendido el jueves 4 de octubre. Nemours brinda especialidades pediátricas únicas al estado y a la región.La Ceremonia de Dedicación fue

un evento privado que honró a los padres de la Florida Central que ayudaron a diseñar el hospital y se presentó un pequeño programa, el cual incluyó una parada de cerca de 100 niños que ya se han beneficiado de la presencia de Nemours en la Florida Central. Esta terminó con un grupo de niños corriendo hacia una pared de ‘silly string’ y hacia el hospital por primera vez.

Among those who are fighting to prove they are worthy to be on the team are guards DeQuan Jones, E’Twaun Moore, and Armon Johnson. Last Friday against the 76ers, no one really separated themselves from the rest. Moore and Jones got the majority of the minutes from the group which could be an indicator of which way coach Jacque Vaughn is leaning, but it is hard to say with the amount of experimentation that goes on in the preseason. The new big men Nikola Vucevic, Andrew Nicholson, and Gustavo Ayon made more of an impact than the guards against the 76ers. The leading scorer and rebounder was Glenn Davis with 16 and 12 and second year player from USC by way of Montenegro, Nikola Vucevic, made a case to be in the regular season rotation with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The 19th pick for the Magic in the draft, Andrew Nicholson, demonstrated what we can expect from the 6’9 forward, scoring 14 points and grabbing 3 rebounds. The physics major has brains and brawn and demonstrates it on the court. He can post up smaller players down with his 250lb frame, take bigger ones off the dribble, and also has a smooth jumper.The game was tight the entire way

and came down to the last minutes of the 4th quarter. In the end the Magic did not have a go to scorer and that cost them in what resulted in a 7 point loss.The Monday night game against the

Cavs was a similar story. Glen Davis was the leading scorer with 27 points

while Nikola Vucevic chipped in with 10 points and 3 rebounds. The game was close throughout as coaches were not paying attention to the score but were evaluating the players and how they play against NBA talent. In this game we got to see a lot more of what we can expect from the young guns. DeQuan Jones put up 7 points and 9 rebounds while E’Twaun Moore had a breakout preseason game with 15 points and 7 assists in 29 minutes. JJ Redick had 18 points and 8 assists and Andrew Nicholson once again demonstrated reliability and consistency with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Although the Magic were down 6 points going into the 4th quarter, they fought back and tied it up at the end of regulation. Glen Davis had an opportunity to with the game but missed an 18 foot jump shot. In overtime, the Magic struggled to find a go-to-scorer and only had 2 field goals. The Cleveland Cavaliers won a close game, 111-114, with Kyrie Irving scoring 22 for the Cavaliers and going 11-11 from the free throw line.Coach Vaughn went deep into the

bench on Tuesday against the Detroit Pistons and did not have any of last games starters dress up. This allowed him to experiment with his new players. DeQuan Jones led the team with 22 points along with Gustavo Ayon who put up a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Newcomer Josh McRoberts from Duke and rookie Kyle O’Quinn both struggled and never got into a good rhythm. E’Twaun Moore contributed with 9 points and 6 assists and Armon Johnson had 10 points and 4 assists. The team was efficient from the field but the Detroit shot almost 48% from 3 point territory and this game was over before it began with the Pistons winning 112-86.

Kissimmee, FL- Excelente evento de clausura de la celebración del mes de la Herencia Hispana fue Viva Osceola 2012, presentado por Kissimmee Utility Authority, donde más de 8,000 personas se

deleitaron al ritmo de Salsa, Merengue,

Bachata y otros estilos latinos, además de disfrutar de una tarde memorable donde hasta el clima colaboró con la celebración del festival hispano más

grande del Condado Osceola y el sur de

Orlando. Viva Osceola se

llevó a cabo el pasado sábado 13 de octubre en el Kissimmee Lakefront Park.Por 21 años consecutivos,

miles de personas, familias

y amigos se han reunido para celebrar el Mes de la Hispanidad en el Condado Osceola. Tanto la comida como el entretenimiento e incluso el clima estuvieron estupendos. Los asistentes bailaron y disfrutaron al son de Los Hermanos Bermúdez, Mariachi Alma de Mexico, Fulanito y la presentación estelar desde New Jersey de Frankie Negrón. Grupos de baile de los

estudios Flava Dance y Leggz presentaron excelentes exhibiciones de baile de salsa y bachata y aquellos que quisieron mantenerse en forma

se ejercitaron al estilo Zumba con Tony Soto y Cardio City.Hubo entretenimiento para

grandes y chicos. Los niños fueron sorprendidos por los actos de magia del gran payaso Dandini, disfrutaron del parque inflable, las manualidades y los deliciosos conos de nieve cortesía de KUA y se tomaron fotos con King Julián de Madagascar.

thousands of people, friends and families have gathered together to celebrate the Hispanic Heritage Month at Osceola County. The entertainment, food and including the weather were excellent. Attendees danced to the rhythm of the great music of Los Hermanos Bermudez, Mariachi Alma de Mexico, Fulanito, and the special presentation from New Jersey of Frankie Negron.

Flava Dance and Leggz Dance studios performed excellent Salsa and Bachata dance exhibitions, and those who want to get in shape exercised at Zumba style with Tony Soto and Cardio City.There was entertainment of the
