22, Governor Rick Scott held his first cabinet meeting of the year in Osceola County. During the meeting Governor Scott announced the recipients of the Business Ambassador Award, the Shine Award, and the Medal of Heroism. Governor Scott discussed about the expansion of Frontier Communications in DeLand, the expansion of North American Surveillance Systems Inc in Titusville, and the investment in the Everglades. Governor Scott presented the Business

Ambassador Award to 6 local companies and organizations for their commitment with the expansion of businesses opportunities and the creation of jobs in Florida. One of the awards was presented to Kidsville Pediatrics, founded by Dr. Francelis Gonzalez. Kidsville Pediatrics clinic opened in 1999 in the Central Florida area. Since then, she has opened seven pediatric practices in Central Florida: Davenport, Kissimmee, Clermont, East Orlando, in addition to three after-hours “walk-in” clinics in East Orlando, Kissimmee and Davenport.

complete and e-file your tax return now, the Free File companies will hold it until Jan. 31 when the IRS begins accepting returns. As previously announced,

Nearly 40 million taxpayers have used Free File since it debuted in 2003. These taxpayers have saved more than an estimated $1.2 billion by using Free File.

Aguada, P.R. - Casi 12 años después de la última zafra en Puerto Rico, el gobernador Alejandro García Padilla celebró hoy el resurgir de la producción industrial de caña de azúcar en la isla.“Este año empezamos la siembra

de caña de azúcar para ayudar a las destilerías en su producción de ron de Puerto Rico y sus miles de empleos. Le vamos a proveer melaza de primera calidad”, afirmó el primer ejecutivo.Este proyecto, que empezó en

diciembre de 2013 con las labores de mantenimiento de los canales de riego y drenaje y la preparación de mil cuerdas en el Valle de Coloso, se espera esté completado en el 2016 con la siembra de 20 mil cuerdas y la creación de unos 1,300 empleos directos y casi cuatro mil indirectos. Las 20 mil cuerdas estarán divididas

entre, al menos, 10 municipios a lo largo del oeste. El 80 por ciento de las mismas serán propiedad de colonos privados, mientras que el restante

20 por ciento estarán a cargo de la Autoridad de Tierras. “Con el cultivo de estas 20 mil

cuerdas, se producirán cerca de 800 mil toneladas de caña de azúcar, que se convertirán en 20.5 millones de galones de miel rica para las destilerías de ron de Puerto Rico. Esta producción tendrá un valor de más de $51 millones y cubrirá cerca del 56 por ciento de la necesidad de miel de las destilerías del país.”“Esto me trae a un elemento

fundamental del proyecto: la construcción de una moderna central justo al lado de la original. Para lograrlo, el Departamento de Desarrollo Económico y Comercio, la Compañía de Fomento Industrial, el Departamento de Agricultura y la Autoridad de Tierras han suscrito un acuerdo colaborativo”, dijo el gobernador. La nueva central, que será

operada por una empresa privada, comenzará a construirse durante el segundo semestre de este año y se

contempla que la obra se extenderá por 18 meses. Durante el periodo de edificación, se crearán 300 empleos directos y 900 indirectos. Una vez la central esté en operación, debe producir 180 empleos directos y 540 indirectos. “Asimismo, este proyecto tiene otra

utilidad. La nueva Central Coloso

tiene el potencial de producir energía eléctrica. Además de cubrir su propia necesidad energética, estudiaremos la viabilidad de que venda energía a la Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica”, enfatizó García Padilla.

La inversión total de esta iniciativa ascenderá a casi $172 millones.

Ha sido miembro de varias organizaciones cívicas y comunitarias, tales como la Asociación de Abogados del Condado Orange, el Fondo de Iniciativa para Negocios Hispanos de la Florida y la Asociación de la Florida Central. Fernandez received his bachelor’s and master of business degrees from Rollins College. He received his law degree from the University of Florida. He succeeds Colleen Reilly, who has served on an interim basis following the passing of Lydia Gardner. Fernandez is appointed for a term beginning January 27, 2014, and ending November 11, 2014.

The expansion of Frontier Communications’ customer contact center will create 139 jobs in technical support positions with a capital investment of $2.3 million. Also North American Surveillance Systems Inc.(NASS) has chosen Titusville’s Space Coast Regional Airport to expand and consolidate its fixed and rotary wing aircraft modification business. The company is planning to create 20 jobs over the next three years in manufacturing and engineering with the expansion. The project will create a capital investment of $1.3 million in land acquisition and $380,000 in construction and equipment. Furthermore, $130 million dollar investment is being made to continue work on restoring the Everglades and South Florida’s ecosystem as part of the “It’s Your Money Tax Cut Budget.”

The Orlando Magic is well on their way to obtaining that lottery pick they

are wanting. Part of the rebuilding process is suffering a high amount of losses for the overall greater gain of the franchise. The Magic hosted the Charlotte

Bobcats last Friday night. The first quarter started very sluggish for the Magic. Orlando did make a come-back but it wasn’t enough to stop Al Jefferson from leading his team to a victory. Former Magic player, Josh McRoberts, plays for the Bobcats and has certainly found his role there. McRoberts struggled with the Magic last season playing very limited minutes. Glen Davis and Victor Oladipo both had double doubles while Arron Afflalo led the team in points with 24. Kyle O’Quinn, who had been seeing increased minutes due to Nik Vucevic being out with a concussion, is starting to look more comfortable on the floor. O’Quinn put up eight points and seven boards along with three blocks. The Magic were able to move past this 111 to 101 loss and focus on the Celtics. Boston came to Orlando on Sunday.

Coach Jacque Vaughn stuck to a seven man rotation and it paid off. Victor Oladipo started along with Glen Davis, Tobias Harris, Jameer Nelson

and Arron Afflalo. Kyle O’Quinn and E’Twaun Moore were the only two to come in off the bench. Davis played an impressive 36 minutes against his former team and was able to add 17 points for the Magic. Afflalo had a double double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. O’Quinn added his own 10 while Harris gave the Magic 18 more. Jameer Nelson gave the Magic another 16 points and ten assists to give Orlando the 93 to 91 victory over the Boston Celtics. It’s nice to see a win, especially one at home. This Magic team plays whole-heartedly and deserves a win here and there. Their one day trip to Brooklyn is

better off forgotten. The Nets were able to hold Orlando to 43 percent field goal percentage and beat the Magic 101 to 90. It was unclear whether or not Orlando would make it home to play their back to back game against the Atlanta Hawks. But the Magic were able to safely escape the blizzard up north. Tobias Harris put on a dunk show for Magic fans. Harris gave the Magic an impressive 19 points 12 rebounds against the Hawks. The entire Magic bench made an appearance this game. Doron Lamb had his season high points with 13. His career high is 16. Lamb also fouled out late in the fourth quarter, committing his final three fouls in nine seconds. Orlando was able to overcome a 19 point deficit but still lost by three to the Hawks. The Magic have lost twelve of the

last thirteen and are at 1-14 without

starting center, Nik Vucevic. As Orlando patiently awaits his return they will still continue to play hard and fight for the win. Tonight at the Amway Center, the Orlando Magic will host the Lakers and honor Bo Outlaw as part of their 25 year anniversary. Outlaw is still heavily involved in the organization. This is the last home game before the Magic take to the road again.

del Sheriff del Condado Osceola arrestaron a dos empleados y 3 estudiantes involucrados en un incidente ocurrido en la Escuela Intermedia Discovery en Kissimmee.La investigación se inició el 10

de enero, cuando los agentes respondieron a la escuela para tomar un reporte de un altercado que tuvo lugar el día anterior. Cuando llegaron, estos hablaron con los administradores escolares quienes indicaron que un estudiante les informó de un altercado físico que se produjo en el salón de clases de Educación de Estudiantes Excepcionales (ESE, siglas en inglés), el 9 de enero el cual una estudiante grabó en su teléfono. Los detectives obtuvieron tres videos que mostraban a Joseph Graham, un estudiante en la clase dándole patadas a otro estudiante y empujándolo contra el escritorio de la computadora. Graham le dijo a la víctima, quien tiene una condición médica, “Me voy a parar en tu pecho y te voy a matar.” Durante el altercado, dos auxiliares docentes, Kristie Lee Gilmore y Mona Sagar quienes estaban asignadas a supervisar la clase observaron el incidente y no tomaron ninguna acción. Employees arrested for Child Neglect and students for Aggravated Battery

Kissimmee, FL - Osceola County Sheriff’s detectives arrested two school employees and 3 students involved in an incident that occurred at Discovery Intermediate School in Kissimmee.The investigation began on January

10 when deputies responded to the school to take a report of an altercation that occurred the day before. When they arrived, they spoke with school administrators who indicated a student reported a physical altercation occurred in an Exceptional Student Education (ESE) classroom on January 9 and a student recorded the incident on her phone. Detectives obtained three videos which showed Joseph Graham, a student in the class kicking another student and pushing him against a computer desk. Graham tells the victim, who has a

medical condition, “I will stomp your chest in and kill you.” During this altercation, two paraprofessionals, Kristie Lee Gilmore and Mona Sagar who are assigned to supervise the class observed the incident and did not take any action. Both had access to a telephone and radio to call for assistance, if needed. Jada Thornton, a student in the class, threw a chair and videotaped the incident. Another student, Wilson Feliciano, also threw a chair after the altercation occurred. Detectives attempted to interview

Gilmore and Sagar, but they refused to cooperate with the investigation. The school district immediately removed Gilmore and Sagar from Discovery Intermediate School and they were working at a location where they had no contact with children. It is the school district’s intent to suspend

the employees without pay pending school board action on Tuesday, January 21, 2014. Based on the students’ statements and evidence, Gilmore and Sagar were arrested and charged with Child Neglect. They are being taken to the Osceola County Jail. Pick Up Orders were obtained for Jada Thornton, Wilson Feliciano and Joseph Graham for Aggravated Battery and Disruption of a School Function charges.
