In last Sunday’s sermon, David reminded us that simplicity in our lives allows relationships to flourish. He even gave the example of a camping trip—a time when we take very few material things with us and as a result often experience glimpses of relationships the way that God intended them. I thought of the Senior High Canoe trip from a few weekends ago.

Eighteen of us sat around the campfire, laughing at each other’s ridiculous antics (who knew that soybeans from the field near our campsite could be boiled in river water to make a mighty close facsimile of Sakura’s edamame) and telling stories. I found it so interesting that the young people on the trip actually requested to hear stories. They

we all worry, we all mess up, we all feel unexplainable moments of joy, we all have dreams. When we let our guard down with each other, when we stop hiding behind our material things, we allow God to move in wonderful ways we’ve not yet dreamed of. And that is the greatest gift of all.

wanted to hear funny stories, poignant stories, stories that let them know that all of us are all too familiar with the human condition.

This storytelling is what brings us together. When we tell the stories of our lives, we admit that we have messed up, we’ve been embarrassed, we’ve been hurt, and that we’ve soldiered on with the help of God’s grace. It makes us vulnerable, and that kind of vulnerability is what relationships are made of. And when we give ourselves the gift of simplicity, whether it’s around the campfire in the woods or around the dinner table in the evening with the television turned off and the lights dimmed just a bit, we make room for that vulnerability.

We tell stories that help us realize that we’re all the same in the ways that matter: we all hurt,

Capital Improvements... The Time is Now!It has been almost ten years since this church completed the major building project that resulted in beautiful new space for worship and ministry. Now, capital repairs and additions are needed! As the money comes in over the next 12 to 15 months, the Trustees and Finance Committees will authorize the Capital Improvements according to the prioritized list.

Recently an e-mail written by Bob Lindsey about his visit to the Dream Center circulated around Jackson. How timely with our October Mission Focus already being The Dream Center.

Did you know? • “Many of the families there have found themselves in their current life situation due to circumstances beyond their control. There are single moms who worked for over 20 years in factory jobs, self-sufficient, and raising their children, who suddenly were the victims of plant closings and in a downward spiral leading to foreclosures and evictions and then homelessness. There are women, with their children, who were the victims of domestic violence and abuse. There is a heart wrenching story that comes with each of the 69 women and children who will call the Dream Center home tonight.”• “Over 83% of the women who have been through the Dream Center program have

The Dream Center: October Mission Focus

found jobs and gotten on their feet and become self-sufficient, with no further need for assistance. During my tour, I felt ashamed when I was proudly shown the food pantry, which held less food than is in my kitchen pantry and cabinets. And this is to feed approximately 30 mothers and 38 to 40 children for a week or so. That evening they were having tuna salad and macaroni and cheese. The next night’s menu was chicken salad and macaroni and cheese. Breakfast each morning, before the children walk to the bus stop, consists of cold cereal and milk.”
