Laity Sunday... A Great Day! by Sue Harvey

Our lay leaders really showed out. Emmett Barker, Carolyn Vaughan and Larry Smith spoke on what is going on and going right with our church and Dan wrapped it up. And there was a lot to talk about. We are financially sound, we have a lot of great things going on and it is time for everyone to plug in. Come to worship, join the prayer team, find a Sunday School class, volunteer in the kitchen, come fellowship on Wednesday nights and alternating Sundays at Andrews Chapel, serve homebound communion and on and on and on. There are so many places to connect and to get to know your fellow church members, that you don't already

know, as well as to enjoy the ones you do. Our consultant is very impressed with our congregation and will come back with a plan of action to help us serve better and be better.

I would challenge any of you that were not in worship on Sunday to watch the service on your computer or request a DVD from the office. You need to know of the good things happening in your church and if you aren't involved, be a part. If you are not sure how to, ask the pastors, staff or lay leaders mentioned above. Any would be happy to help you or find the one who could.

There's a place for everyone.

30 Days of Prayer Calendar

In response to the Leadership Team’s request for the Prayer Ministry Team to provide a way for the congregation to be in prayer for the consultation process regarding the future of our church, the Prayer Ministry Team has developed a prayer calendar for use during the month of November.

Each day of the month there is a specific prayer suggestion and a scripture passage which relates to that suggestion. Each family is encouraged to find a specific time daily to come together, read the scripture, and pray. The 30 Days of Prayer Calendar is available at jacksonfumc.org. Calendars also available at the receptionist deskon November 1st. The Prayer Ministry Team is praying with you!

Drivers WantedWant to serve at Jackson First United Methodist Church (FUMC)? Here’s a better question: Want to drive?

The church currently has two buses—a small one any licensed driver can helm and a large one reserved for those with Commercial Drivers Licenses (CDL). At the moment, we only have three volunteers qualified to drive the large vehicle, and Operations Manager Tricia Odom is looking for more.

The request is important because, as she says, that bus contributes significantly to church ministry.

“We don’t use it that often, but when we need more than 14 people to go on a trip, we have to take the big bus,” she said. “We’ve got to have someone with a CDL to drive it.”

Anyone who would like to serve as a driver should contact her at [email protected] for more information. If volunteers don’t already have their CDLs, they will need to apply for them and take special written and driving tests. Tricia says the closest testing facility is in Nashville.

Drivers must also be between the ages of 21 and 74. Volunteers aged 66 to 74 must have

clearance from their doctors to drive the bus. Volunteers aged 21 to 24 may drive only if they are staff members or summer interns.

Jackson FUMC will pay expenses for the licensing and medical check-ups people may need to serve in this capacity.

And, of course, anyone who wants to join the list of drivers for our small bus may do so, as well. They just need a clean driving record, and they need to give us a copy of their driver’s license.

At Jackson FUMC, we encourage any and all kinds of service. Help out any way you can!

Why Pray?by Emily Freeman

The simplest answer to “Why Pray” is because Jesus prayed. About ten years ago, twelve grandmothers felt the need for a support system for the youth of our church. As a result, Grandmother’s Love And Praise (LAP), was begun.

Every month, the grandmothers’ core group sends names of youth (from college students to the 6th grade Confirmands), to over forty grandmothers who pray for them daily. Any grandmother who wishes to be a part of this prayer ministry for the youth is welcome and invited to contact Leila Lawrence, 668-1627 or Emma Lee Bond, 422-2084.
