One Mans Opinion

Part I

I was in West Savannah last week shortly after the Officer InvolvedShooting of Mr. Charles Smith. I, like most people, wonder whathappened and how. Im not too concerned about why Mr. Smith wasarrested , but Im really confused as to what happened next. Im suresome people can move their handcuffed hands from back to front.But what bothers me more than anything else is How, (IF he did) conceal a gun. IF that was the casethen the officer(s) were negligent in their duties. Even so, IF Mr. Charles had a weapon; trying to es-cape and pointing a weapon at an officer was not the thing to do. I know everything that Ive stated is

patently obvious, but I had to get that out of the way before I continued.

So, what are our next steps as a community? I recommend that the community maintains its compo-sure and let the process play out. Even if composure is lost and negative activities occur, the processto find out what happened and why will take just as long. So there is really no point and will onlyserve to make matters worst. Secondly, be careful who you listen too. Certain members of the commu-nity are there to serve at all times when an injustice occurs, no matter whether the TV cameras arethere or not. Others are there just for the cameras and to inflame the easily led. Just be careful anddont become pawns of the glory seekers. Lastly, be prepared if the outcome of the investigation is notto your liking. Im not saying that the police were right, just that these incidents often have unknownor complicated causes. In any case also be prepared to hold accountable those responsible for the dis-tribution of information to explaining this tragedy to your satisfaction AND insure that policies are in

put place to prevent the type of execution of duty that allowed a prisoner to remained armed while un-der arrest.
