HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embar-rassing problem for millions of people, but it can be es-pecially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features stu-dents from rst through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old non-pro t Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

(NewsUSA) - Which jobs will be in demand in the coming years? It’s a question that’s taken on greater urgency as the cost of higher education continues to rise much faster than incomes. And while no one’s recommending choosing a career based solely on market factors, a lot more philosophy majors might be employed today if they’d paid attention.

“Not all (college) degrees are created equal,” a report from Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Work-force concluded. One career that’s considered golden: doc-tors of chiropractic.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Handbook, chiropractic employment is expected to rise 28 percent through 2020 -- much faster than the average for all jobs. For those unaware, today’s chiropractors are at the frontline in providing non-invasive, drug-free relief from ev-erything from back pain to migraines to a host of lifestyle issues. And while there’s a high degree of both personal and patient satisfaction, the educational requirements are among the most stringent of all health care professionals.

The typical applicant at an accredited chiropractic college has already acquired nearly four years of pre-medical un-dergraduate college education, including courses in biol-ogy, physics, psychology, organic and inorganic chemistry, and related lab work. He or she is then looking at four or five years of professional study in the healing sciences that in some cases -- including anatomy, physiology, rehabilitation and nutrition -- are even more intensive than that of medical doctors. There’s also a minimum one-year, clinical-based program involving actual patient care. “That’s because of the hands-on nature of the profession and the intricate adjust-ing techniques that must be learned to help patients,” says Gerard Clum of the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress. mud, slush, cigarettes, pets, food spills and so on linger in your car, you can drive them away if you know a few facts and hints. While common air fresheners use perfumes to try to cover up the smell, they provide only temporary relief that doesn’t often cover the entire vehicle. To truly eliminate odor, you have to control the cause. To that end, there’s an odor

ELIMINATE AUTO ODORSeliminator that uses ClO2 technology. It controls odor-causing bacteria, eliminating even the foulest smells

quickly and permanently. The EPA-registered, patented technology of Star brite Auto Odor Eliminator is easy

to use. Its deep-penetrating vapor gets into all areas of your car’s interior—under seats, into the upholstery and throughout the ventilation s y s t e m — a n d works within hours. It’s also a great way

to remove odors from RVs or boats that have been in

seasonal storage.Once you’ve eliminated bad odors, keep your car smelling sweet: Vacuum it whenever you wash it; make sure there are no food wrappers, cigarette butts or dirty clothes lying around; and don’t let anyone smoke in it.
