Anna Nagar shortlisted for multi-level car parking lotBy Our Correspondent

Anna Nagar is among the few locations in the city that has been included in a futuristic proposal to construct a multi-level car parking lot, as part of steps to ease congestion on the roads in commercial zones. Presently, a multi-level car parking facility to be established by the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion is in the pipeline in T Nagar. Apart from this some private commercial establishments have multi-level car parking facilities in operation – with many of them being basement facilities.

“In Anna Nagar, we are looking at a location in Roundtana to establish the proposed multi-level car parking lot. It is planned that the parking lot could accommodate about 330

cars at any given point in time. Sterling Road, Chet-pet and Kilpauk are among the few other loca-tions where such facilities have been planned,” ac-cording to an official of

the Anna Nagar Zone of the Greater Chennai Cor-poration.

Establishing such multi-level parking lots to relieve the roads of vehicular density stress has been mooted in the Draft Final Report of the Comprehen-sive Mobility Plan of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority as well.

“Once this plan is ap-proved, funds sanctioned and executed, then the space that would be other-wise occupied by cars, will be left free for pedestrians near the Anna Nagar Roundtana. We need such models in commercial zones,” the official added.

At present, the Anna Nagar neighbourhood has become congested as the real estate market had long evolved from a residential

one to a commercial one. Also alongside this real estate transition, the neighbourhood has wit-nessed a growth in car passenger units with some households in Anna Nagar having more that one car. On any given day, hun-dreds of shoppers come to the neighbourhood in cars taking over a significant stretch of the road.

“It is indeed good to

hear that the government authorities are planning to construct multi-level park-ing lots as it is the need of the hour. While doing this, I also sincerely hope that the authorities would look at improving access to public transport, so that some day people will not have to need to take their cars for shopping,” said Balakumar, a resident of Anna Nagar.

Bridge work left unfinished

SirBridge work is being carried out at the Mogap-

pair West Main Road, leading to Golden Flats, near Kavimani Salai. Adjacent to it half of the road has been dug out, leaving only a narrow path for vehicles and pedestrians to cross over. A few days ago it was a close shave for a two wheeler during night time. As it was dark and with the barricades being knocked down, the pathway was not visible. It looks like the inevitable may happen anytime. Why was the work left unfinished seems a mystery. It’s high time the authorities concerned get the work done at the earliest.

The access to the Nol-ambur First Main Road and beyond from Kavi-mani Salai has been cut-off due to ongoing civic works. Only a few months ago, traffic flow on this stretch was affected due to con-struction of a culvert. Sub-sequently, two-way vehicu-lar traffic was restored.

However, now the road near the culvert has been dug up for undertaking major civic works com-pletely cutting off access to vehicles. Those coming from the Eri Scheme Main Road and Velammal School in Mogappair usu-ally take the left from Ka-vimani Salai to reach Nol-ambur First Main Road. Several by-lanes branch off this road, which is one of the main pathways for various neighbourhoods in Nolambur.

“Considering the major nature of work that is being undertaken using heavy machinery such as JCBs and excavators, it appears that it would take many

days for the project to be completed. Until then peo-ple will not have easy ac-cess to the Nolambur First Main Road from Kavimani Salai and parts of Mogap-pair West and Mogappair East,” explained Raghav Kumar, a resident of an apartment in Nolambur.

A worker at the site, who introduced himself as Arul, said the road at the culvert was dug up as an extension of the desilting operations in the adjacent flood carrier.

The work has altered the visual topography of the

region as mounds of earth have now covered even the Kavimani Salai signboard, placed by the Greater Chennai Corporation. Un-less you take a closer look the signboard is not even visible.

“Now motorists have to take alternative routes, a detour by a few hundred metres, to reach their homes in Nolambur. Either one has to go via the Church Road and take a right turn to reach some places or alternatively you have to go past the Mogap-pair West Bus Depot and

ahead of the end of the road take the path turning to various residential apart-ment neighbourhoods in Nolambur,” pointed out Ravindranath, a resident of Nolambur.

“We have to undergo such interim hardship for the sake of long term gain in development of civic infrastructure in our neigh-bourhood. We only wish that even if takes a longer time, the contractor would execute the job perfectly and thereafter the authori-ties must relay the road properly,” he added.

Chennai Telephones chief general manager S M Kalavathi inaugurated an Aadhaar Service Ken-dra at BSNL Anna Nagar CSC, a press release says. BSNL has been authorised by UIDAI to offer Aad-haar Service Kendra facil-ity through its country-wide network of 3,000 CSCs. In Chennai Tele-phones Circle, 43 CSCs have been identified for the purpose.

Applicants can get new enrolment and mandatory biometric update of chil-dren free cost, the press release said. A list of CSCs with Aadhaar service fa-cility is available on www.chennai.bsnl.co.in.

A portion of a flood water carrier, where civil construction works are under way, in Mogappair West has been left open posting a threat to motorists, par-ticularly two-wheeler riders, and to pedestri-ans. The canal is being desilted and restored with its sides being con-cretised as part of a massive project in dif-ferent parts of Mogap-pair West and Mogap-pair East, ahead of this

year’s monsoon season. While the contractor, engaged by a govern-ment agency to execute the work, has built a partial retention wall along the water body on Seventh Main Road, a portion has been left open right at the point where the road turns on to Mogappair West Main Road.

Local residents and a section of the motor-ists, who are using this stretch as an alternative road to reach their des-tinations, feel that the

contractor should ide-ally have covered the opening using tempo-rary materials like tin sheets as a precaution-ary measure.

"No accidents have occurred so far but that does not mean that we should not take precau-tions. Considering that this is a rather narrow road, the possibility of motorists skidding and falling into the canal from this opening can-not be ruled out in case a heavy vehicle passes by pushing them to the

road margins. You should note that iron beams have been placed along the canal, so the risk of injury is serious should an accident oc-cur," says Balasubrama-nian, who was riding past the spot on his two-wheeler. "I take this route regularly to reach the Eri Scheme Road while coming from Am-battur Estate Road," he adds. A worker at the site, who refused to be identified, said, "It will be a matter of days be-fore the retention wall is

constructed. There is no need to worry as motor-ists are generally cau-tious while driving on this stretch as civil infra-structure works are go-ing on." Disagreeing, Balasubramanian said, "Not everyone who takes this road is aware of the dangerous open-ing. We cannot live on assumptions especially when there is a threat on the road. So it is bet-ter that it is temporarily covered till the concre-tisation work is over."

Anna University has decided to give one more chance to students who have not cleared their arrears within the stipu-lated time of seven years from joining the engineering course. As per the decision of the university, only the students who had joined in 2012 are able to write their arrears this year. “But we received many requests from students and parents. Hence, the university decided to give one more opportunity to these students,” said the vice-chancellor of the University. The exam is likely to be conducted in Septem-ber or October.
