What’s new in the canteen?Have your kids been telling you about the great food being served up at the school canteen? Friday Pop-Up Specials are popular and are usually sold out at recess - Penny and Danielle are creating new healthy and delicious food options every week.

We have just one problem - we need more volunteers to help us prepare and serve food.

We need help on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday each week between 9am and 1.30pm. Or just from 10.45am until 1.30pm. You could come in once a month or once a week!

Our canteen is friendly, Covid safe and essential to the school. Our volunteers tell us that it is a great way to meet people - lunch included, training provided and no experience necessary! Helping in the canteen is also great work experience.

Call Penny on 6645 2443 or get in touch with the school.

Sarah Armstrong, P&C Maclean High School.

Year 11 GeographyOn Wednesday, 9th September, Year 11 Geography students were let out into the wild to test the fieldwork skills they have learnt from Year 7 to now at Brooms Head and Red Cliff.

The day started at Brooms Head, where students completed a field sketch of the estimated 300 million year old syncline and anticline found in the rock strata at the base of the Brooms Head lookout, as well as using tools to collect data such as wind speed and direction, humidity and temperature.

After a quick trip up to the top of the lookout, students identified some plants which are native to coastal regions. Students were then bussed to Red Cliff where they completed a series of mapping activities to help them better understand how to use topographic maps and why Red Cliff is geologically distinctivie.

The day finished with a trip to Townsend shop where pizzas, burgers and chips were eaten after a big day out in the field. Geographers are required to do several hours in the field as part of their Year 11 and HSC course. The fieldwork completed will assist students next term when they commence the first topic in the HSC course: Ecosystems at Risk.

Thank you goes to Mrs Hamilton for accompanying the students on the trip and assisting them with the fieldwork activities.

Miss Emma Watts, Year 11 Geography Teacher.

HSC student advice

We know our students and staff have worked hard for the HSC The safety of our students and staff remains of utmost importance. This year extra arrangements are in place to ensure that any disruption due to COVID-19 will have minimal impact on HSC exams.

Our school has put in place a number of contingencies to help ensure exams run as smoothly as possible.

The exams have been scheduled and our school has arrangements in place for exams to proceed as planned. It is important that students review their timetable and plan well so they turn up for their exams on time, healthy and rested.

Any student with a pre-existing condition, that presents similarly to flu-like symptoms, should be planning now and speak to their doctor/GP. The GP can provide a medical certificate ahead of the exams to ensure they are not sent home.

If, on the day of the exam, your child feels unwell with flu-like symptoms, they should stay home and get tested. HSC students are prioritised for COVID-19 test results.

It’s important to note that all students will be asked if they are well before entering exam rooms.

We want all our students to sit their exams but sometimes things happen. If your child is unwell and misses their exam, contact the school. Students who are unwell will be eligible for the illness and misadventure provision with NESA.

If there are any changes to exam arrangements we will communicate with HSC students through email from [email protected] or a text from Maclean High School. This will be the only source of communication for these types of notifications. If in doubt, please call theschool.

We wish all our students well in the upcoming exams.

Maclean’s Debating Program keeps getting bigger and better! This year has been an unusual year to say the least but that hasn’t stopped the students from their love of competitive arguing.

The format of the competition has changed with debates occurring online but the passion and rigour is in no way diminished. This term the debating program, run by Miss Melissa O’Neill and Mr Andrew Black, kicked off with the Year 11 team debates, closely followed by the Year 9/10 competition and finishing the term with the Year 7/8 teams.

Today two teams debated against each other; Alstonville High School debating team against our home team, Maclean High School Year 8 debating team. The topic was that advertising beauty products should be banned. Everyone waited in agony for the coin flip to be done. Josie Rawson flipped the coin and we won! We got affirmative! Our team cheered in delight and immediately began planning how to convince the adjudicator our argument was best. When it came to the debate, Charles Jeffery was our first speakerand used his charming wit to sway the debate our way. Ethan Fisher was an amazing second speaker arguing back against Alstonville with quick smart rebuttal. Then Josie came in with her fiery passion and summed the entire argument up. We waited for the adjudicator’s word and... the sad, sorry news was heard. We lost the debate against Alstonville. The debate was so close and came down to minor details but it was a loss all the same. It was a valuable experience for the team, and we are looking forward to our next debate. Written by Jocelyn Menzies, Year 8 student.

What an awesome start to Maclean High School’s Year 7 debating team! They participated in a challenging and super creative debate with the topic “That schools should replace Arts and Music with Programming and Coding.’ They were negative against this topic, facing Banora Point High School’s Year 7 team. They started brainstorming, filling the whiteboard with scribbles that only they could recognise as words. When the debate started, Banora Point’s first speaker spoke, as Maclean B’s fourth speaker, Paige Huxley, started writing rebuttals like crazy. Next Maclean’s first speaker, Emily, hit the affirmative team with her logical thinking and confident public speaking skills. After Banora Point’s second speaker spoke, Maclean’s second speaker, Logan Miltiadou smashed the affirmative team with his incredible ability to think on the spot and expand all of his points to fill up the whole six minutes he had to speak. After the affirmative team’s third speaker spoke, Ruby Martini, Maclean’s third speaker, ripped apart the affirmative team’s arguments with her super sassy rebuttals. As we waited in suspense for the adjudicator to decide who won, she finally gave both teams feedback and Maclean won! The fourth speakers of both teams congratulated each other, and as soon as the call ended the Maclean supporters jumped in joy! What a thrilling debate it was, congratulations to both teams for debating so wonderfully. Written by Paige Huxley, Year 7 student.

During this term, the wonderful Year 9 Maclean High School debating team consisted of first speaker, Kieran Karstens, 2nd speaker, Mikayla Cameron-Clarke, 3rd speaker, Kira Stokes, and the 4th speaker Kate Moore. This jovial bunch of students competed against Alstonville High School, with the topic that “Student classes should be organised by skill level and not age group.” The Maclean High School were the affirmative team, while Alstonville were the negative. In the end, Alstonville were successful in persuading their point across, and claimed the victory. Written by Kieran Karstens, Year 9 student.
