“
M
ele, would you pass me that coconut oil, please?” said Grandma.
“I’ll hold the bottle for you, Grandma,” said Mele.Grandma nodded. She was concentrating as she gently
unwrapped the bandage from around Mum’s foot.Mele watched as Grandma began to massage
Mum’s ankle.
3
After the massage, Mum stood up. “That feels a lot better,” she told Grandma. Grandma smiled.
“Time for kindy,” Mum then said to Mele. “Grandma’s going to take you today. I don’t think I could walk that far.”
“Can I have pigtails today?” asked Mele.“Sure,” said Grandma. “Thank you for helping me.”Grandma combed some of the coconut oil through Mele’s
hair as she made the pigtails.
5
“Bye, Mum,” said Mele as they started off.“Have a nice day at kindy,” said Mum.
“Tell Mrs Rata I’ll see her next week.”
When Mele and Grandma got to kindy, Mrs Rata was standing at the gate. “This is my grandma,” Mele told her.
“Tālofa,” said Mrs Rata.“Kia ora,” said Grandma.
7
“What is the matter with your arm?” asked Grandma.“I hurt it last night at netball,” said Mrs Rata.“Grandma could massage it for you,” said Mele.
“She can do fofō.”Grandma smiled at Mrs Rata and nodded.
8
So, after kindy, Mele helped Mrs Rata put all the books back on the shelf. When Grandma arrived to pick Mele up, she had the bottle of coconut oil in her bag.
9
“I’ll hold the coconut oil for you, Grandma,” said Mele.
After the massage, Mrs Rata stood up. “That feels heaps better,” she said. “I’ve heard about Samoan massage, but I’ve never had it before. Fa‘afetai lava!”
Grandma smiled.
11
When they got back home, Grandma pulled off her shoes. “E, I am so tired,” she said. “My poor feet! I’m not used to walking that far.”
Mele had an idea. She looked in Grandma’s bag and found the bottle of coconut oil.
13
14
“Let me massage you,” said Mele.“Would you?”“Here, you can hold the oil, Grandma.”After the massage, Grandma stood up. “That feels much
better,” she said. “How did you learn to do that so well?”
15
Mele smiled and said, “I’ve been watching you, Grandma.”
