One-on-one basketball training sessions with Coach Jamal Thompson can boost young players’ enjoyment of the game

W hether kids dream of becoming a basketball

star or simply want to become a more confident player, they can take their game to the next level with private coaching sessions at the RSC with Coach Jamal Thompson. Lessons in ball handling, footwork, shooting and rebounding are geared to students in third grade through high school.

“When it comes to private lessons, the biggest benefit is the time they get from one-on-one or small group instruction,” said Thompson. “In traditional practice settings, some kids can get lost if they aren’t able to keep up with the drills. Private lessons allow kids to learn at a pace more suitable for them. The goal is to get the player to maximize his or her talent. And no matter how good a player or team may be, there are always things for players to work on.”

“Coach Thompson’s knowledge of the game and his ability to motivate is a winning combination for his students,” said Jeremy Wolfmeyer, Recreation Manager for the RSC. “When kids improve their skills, they enjoy the game more. And their teammates appreciate their ability to score and help score points. So this new program will mean a lot to local teams as well as the players who enroll in private lessons.”

Coach Thompson excelled in both high school, where he was an all-conference player, and college, where he earned varsity letters in both basketball and track and field at North Central College.

Currently, besides teaching private basketball lessons at the Renaud Spirit Center, Coach Thompson is in his second year of coaching at a local high school, where he is the head coach of the junior varsity girls’ team and an assistant coach for the varsity girls’ team.

“I enjoy everything about coaching, from seeing players develop over time to the relationships you build with the kids,” said Coach Thompson. “It’s just a great experience. And I hope to inspire them to work harder and achieve things they didn’t believe were possible. “

To sign up for the sessions, contact Recreation Manager Jeremy Wolfmeyer by calling 636-474-8131, or email [email protected].

Rick’s Success Story

Page 31: O'Fallon Parks and Rec Guide - Winter 2012-13

R ick Haley has been an RSC member since June. When he joined, he was on crutches, recuperating from a

broken hip.

I am 63. I grew up hiking, camping, hunting and fishing with my Dad and Grandfather. That love of the outdoors is part of my spirit.

Until last February, I enjoyed hiking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. But when I was in Colorado cross country skiing with my wife, Janine, I slid on a patch of ice and broke my right hip.

Emergency surgery left Rick with three screws inserted in his hip, and unable to do much of anything for six weeks. After that, 12 weeks of physical therapy got him back on his feet, but he still needed exercise to regain strength and mobility. With his doctor’s permission, he joined the RSC.

At first when he worked out, he hobbled on crutches from machine to machine. Growing stronger, he traded his crutches for a cane. He walked on the indoor track, started strength and cardio training, and worked out in the pool. The pool took the weight off his hip as he followed a regime of mobility exercises.

To help me heal, I added yogurt, soy milk and vegetable juice to my already low-fat, high fiber diet and I get plenty of sunshine for vitamin D. I have eliminated alcohol and carbonated drinks for now because they slow the bone growth processes.

Now, Rick’s already back to hiking. And he and Janine are building a home in Colorado.

What keeps me going? I want to continue doing the things I love outdoors. To be able to continue to play outside is a very powerful motivator. I visualize being on the trail as I walk the indoor track at the RSC.

Although I am pretty lucky to be a self-motivated person, I still need a motivational boost from time-to-time. So, on Wednesdays my wife, Janine, joins me for our “workout date” at the RSC.

To sum things up, this year’s accident introduced me to some very good people, some new foods and new exercises. Luckily, I was in good shape before I broke my hip, but I am in even better condition now, thanks to a more regimented exercise program which I plan to continue. So, some good has come with the not-so-good.

Rick’s advice:

Take a short stroll around the block after dinner or take the children to the park or the RSC. Disconnect the cell phone, social media, computer and television, and enjoy some stress-reducing activities. You will be healthier and happier for it, and improve your quality of life, too.

Be your own Success Story at the RSC! Go to www.renaudspiritcenter.com/success to watch additional stories, and to learn more about the RSC.

O ’Fallon’s Learn to Swim program is built on teaching aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. Our goal

is to teach children and adults how to swim and be safe in and

around the water.

The program is composed of 11 course levels:

Aqua Learning:Preschool:

Preschool Plus:Level 1: Level 2: Level 3: Level 4:Level 5:Level 6:

Level:Level:

Shrimp I and IITurtleSeahorseExplorerSubmarineClipperSailorAdventurerBarracudaAdultFear of Water

Aqua Learning: Parent and child participation is required. Class size is limited to eight parent-child couples.

Preschool – Level 3: Class ratio is six children to one instructor.

Levels 4 – 6: Class ratio is eight children to one instructor.

Adult: Class ratio is eight adults to one instructor.

Fear of Water: Class ratio is four to one instructor. Parents are required to be in the water the first four classes.

Participants will move to the next class or skill level when all skills from the previous level are mastered. Some classes may seem repetitive, but we want swimmers to perfect their skills in order to advance safely. Please keep in mind that children learn at different paces and it’s common to repeat a class.

Weekday classes at the RSC meet twice weekly for four weeks and last 35 minutes. Saturday morning sessions last 40 minutes and meet for seven weeks.

Which class is right for my child? To ensure your child’s success in the Learn to Swim Program, it’s important to register children for the appropriate level. Children who have participated in the swimming program should register according to the last class successfully completed. Each child must pass a particular level before proceeding to the next.

Fear of Water • Ages 3–6This water-adjustment class is for children who may never have taken swimming lessons and are frightened of the water. Parents should be prepared to help in the water during the first four classes if children need extra assistance. Students will gain confidence and independence as they master introductory skills and learn safe practices.
