MISSION STATEMENT:

“Growing in Grace, Gratitude and Giving”

34th Sunday In Ordinary Time Gospel Meditation

Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture

“Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.” Today we celebrate the feast of an unusual kind of king. Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, does not run His kingdom in the standard fashion. Instead of insisting upon the pomp and circumstance that usually surrounds earthly royalty, Jesus has a different focus. He thinks not of Himself, but of those He loves. And in today’s Gospel, His interest in especially focused on the poor and suffering in our midst.

Our King asks us to care for those in need--the hungry, the homeless, the foreigner, the sick and suffering. But then, He goes farther; He tells us that in caring for these least brethren, we will be ministering to HIM! What an incredible promise. Not only do we carry out the command to love our neighbor when we protect those in need, but we also show our love for Jesus in a direct and concrete way. This love for Christ through others is so real that Jesus actually tells us that our place on Judgement Day will depend on it: “’What you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’ And these will go off to eternal punishment.” On the other hand, the “righteous” who ministered to the weak and poor will enjoy eternal life. Our King has spoken loud and clear. Now comes the question of whether or not we are obeying His orders?

Each of us is called to examine how well we are caring for the least among us. Sometimes, this means giving our time and energy for special ministries or missions, but often it means caring for those right in front of us--the sick or suffering in our own homes, families, neighborhoods, or parishes. Whatever our situation, may we have the eyes to see Christ in our midst and serve him.

Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

On this last Sunday of the Liturgical year we celebrate Christ’s power over all peoples and powers. We remember to call on Christ for He is the way, the truth and the life. Here below is a statement from the United States Catholic Bishops outlining the importance of this feast and its role in our lives:

“During the early twentieth century, in Mexico, Russia, and in many parts of Europe, atheistic regimes threatened not just the Catholic Church and its faithful but civilization itself. Pope Pius XI’s encyclical gave Catholics hope and--while governments of men around them crumbled--the assurance that Christ the King shall reign forever. Pope Pius XI said that Christ “reign[s] ‘in the hearts of men,’ both by reason of the keenness of his intellect and the extent of his knowledge, and also because he is very truth, and it is from him that truth must be obediently received by all mankind.”

While we hope and pray that the dark times of almost a century ago remain in the past, a troubling recent Pew Forum report shows that religious intolerance is on the rise worldwide, including in the United States. Therefore, we must remain vigilant when our first American freedom protected under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is threatened.

Religious liberty gives us the ability not just to worship at Mass but the freedom to feed the hungry, serve the needy, and tend to the sick. During this time when we come together as a nation in thanksgiving for our many blessings, let us thank God for the gift of religious liberty and ask that it not be taken for granted.”

And so we pray that we may be his people and work with Christ, work through Christ and work in Christ for the good of all peoples. The preface says it well: “For you anointed your Only Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, with the oil of gladness as eternal Priest and King of all creation, so that by offering himself on the altar of the Cross as a spotless sacrifice to bring peace, he might accomplish the mysteries of human redemption and, making all created things subject to his rule, he might present to the immensity of your majesty an eternal and universal kingdom, a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace.” (emphasis added) Matthew 25 The gospel reading tells us exactly how to live our lives and profess the values of Christian living that leads to the “kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace.” It is all about “doing”. It involves hands and hearts and voices doing the will of God. Anyone can say they are a Christian but the real proof is in the “doing”. God calls us to be “do-ers”, workers in the vineyard who never give up but remain faithful. Everyone is called to participate in the work of Christ for it is through our “doing” that we will be judged at the end of our days.

Christmas Giving Tree

Christmas is a magical time, filled with excitement, anticipation, and joy. But sadly, some local families are struggling and in danger of waking up to find nothing under the Christmas tree. As in past years, our parish family will be reaching out to the poorest of the poor in our area through the Christmas Giving Tree. Those being gifted by this outreach project include personal referrals and clients of local help agencies.

The Giving Tree is up in the church gathering space and full of ornaments! Here’s how you can help us to help others:

∗ TAKE A TAG OR TAGS FROM THE TREE. The ornaments are various shapes and colors, each signifying the agency or group of individuals being assisted. You will find a chart near the Giving Tree with descriptions of each giving opportunity.

∗ GO SHOPPING! Each ornament will list an item or items being requested, such as clothing, toy, game, gift card, etc.

∗ RETURN YOUR DONATION. Donations should be placed UNWRAPPED into a Christmas gift bag with the ornament attached (this helps us keep track of what goes where), then returned to the area under/around the Giving Tree. Gift cards and checks should be placed into the envelope provided, then dropped into the Poor Box at church, given to Father Ron or Linda at Mass, or dropped off at the Parish Office. RETURNS ARE DUE ON OR BEFORE SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3.

∗ NOTE THAT we are also accepting donations of Christmas wrapping paper and tape to give to the families so they can wrap their own children’s gifts. This helps to maintain dignity and adds to their joy on Christmas morning.

Questions? Please contact Nancy Steele, Christian Service Coordinator, at [email protected] or 248-681-9424.

CSA Minute: Thanksgiving

In the Archdiocese of Detroit, we have much to be tankful for this Thanksgiving because of your generous gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal. The CSA makes possible more than 100 ministries, programs, and services that touch the lives of thousands throughout our Archdiocese each day. No one parish could provide all of these blessings, that benefit so many. Truly, the CSA allows us to open doors to encounter Christ. If you have yet to donate to this year’s Catholic Services Appeal, please prayerfully consider your blessings and make the most generous gift possible. For more information about this and other CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to www.aod.org.

ADVENT WREATH

The season of Advent will be here soon! Advent is a time of preparation and waiting for the coming of Christ at Christmas. Parents know how hard it can be for a child to patiently wait, an Advent calendar or wreath is a wonderful way to mark the days and weeks until Christmas.

We invite families of all ages to an Advent Wreath Making Event on Saturday, December 2nd at 1:00 pm in the Social Hall. We will supply a wreath ring, candles, floral foam, fresh greens (please bring your own decorations). The cost is $15 per family to make one wreath.

If you have any questions or need more information, please feel free to call me Linda in the Worship Office at 248-681-1410 or [email protected]. Please fill out the form below and return with your payment to the Worship Office.

A Brief History of the Advent Wreath

The symbolism of the Advent wreath is beautiful. The wreath is made of various evergreens, signifying continuous life. Even these evergreens have a traditional meaning which can be adapted to our faith: The laurel signifies victory over persecution and suffering; pine, holly, and yew, immortality; and cedar, strength and healing. Holly also has a special Christian symbolism: The prickly leaves remind us of the crown of thorns, and one English legend tells of how the cross was made of holly. The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolizes the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the everlasting life found in Christ. Any pine cones, nuts, or seedpods used to decorate the wreath also symbolize life and resurrection. All together, the wreath of evergreens depicts the immortality of our soul and the new, everlasting life promised to us through Christ, the eternal Word of the Father, who entered our world becoming true man and who was victorious over sin and death through His own passion, death, and resurrection.

The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. A tradition is that each week represents one thousand years, to sum to the 4,000 years from Adam and Eve until the Birth of the Savior. Three candles are purple and one is rose. The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation in now half over and they are close to Christmas. The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of His second coming to judge the living and the dead. The light again signifies Christ, the Light of the world.

Since Advent is a time to stir-up our faith in the Lord, the wreath and its prayers provide us a way to augment this special preparation for Christmas. Moreover, this good tradition helps us to remain vigilant in our homes and not lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas.

Influenza and the Liturgy

The flu season is upon us once more and some of our parishioners are very concerned about the spread of germs especially from some of the liturgical practices at Mass. Hopefully the following suggestions will help with these concerns.

General suggestions:

1. To reduce and/or eliminate contracting the flu be sure that you get your flu shot in a timely manner. 2. Wash your hands with warm water and soap frequently and/or sanitize them using a hand sanitizer. “Correct”

hand washing is the single most important habit that can help prevent the spread of infectious disease. 3. Be sure you get sufficient rest, and if you are sick: coughing, sneezing, sniffling or generally not feeling well stay

home.

During Liturgy:

1. The communicant should consider receiving Communion in the hand during this season to avoid contact6 between the minister’s hands and the communicant’s mouth and saliva.

2. All who are sick: coughing, sneezing, sniffling or generally not feeling well should not approach the Chalice to receive the Precious Blood out of a sincere concern for the health and well-being of others.

3. If someone is sick, please refrain from holding hands during the Our Father. All should be encouraged to pray the Our Father with hands raised to God. . . The Orans position.

4. If someone is sick do not hesitate not to shake hands at the Kiss of Peace. It might be prudent to tell your neighbors before the start of Mass that you have a cold and will not be shaking hands only because of that. Perhaps a bow of the head and the greeting “Peace be with you,” could be shared with those around instead.

New Hymnals Have Arrived Your Help Is Needed!

Today, Sunday, November 26th after the 12:00 Noon Mass we will remove all the Hymnals from the church and install the New Hymnals into the protective covers.

We recycle the previous ones and get ready for the new upcoming liturgical year.

If you can volunteer to help us, please see me after the 12:00 Noon Mass, today. Thanks for your assistance! Dave Hansen

This book drive is organized by the Legacy Pioneer Foundation (LPF), an organization built upon the belief that an educated population is essential to the development of a peaceful productive society. The

Foundation provides access to good education from Kindergarten to Post-Secondary to members of rural and or developing communities who otherwise would not have the means to build a life legacy. The Foundation is committed to funding good education attainment for individuals in rural communities, and we sincerely believe that donating 1,000 children’s books is an excellent way to support this initiative. The schools we are partnering with are Girls Secondary School, Ovim, a public girl’s day/boarding, and El-Shaddai Foundation Nursery/Primary School in Abia state, Nigeria. Our goal is to collect 1,000 new or gently used books by November 30th. Books should be at the U.S. Pre-K to 12th grade reading level and can be anything from children’s fiction/non-fiction to young teen literature:

Dictionaries, Thesauruses, Current Atlases, Math including algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus, English, focusing on grammar or comprehension, Geography, Agricultural, Science, general, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Life Skills, Health, Hygiene, Adolescence, Careers, Friendship, Animals, Love, Chechen Soup for the soul, Africa, African-Americans.

Bins are in the Gathering Space for your book donations.

Giving Thanks … for YOU!!! When the call was put out to “adopt” families in need for Thanksgiving, many of you stepped forward, either donating items or funds, or even taking an entire family.

On Thanksgiving Day, these families - who are finding it hard to even put food on the table - sat down to a traditional dinner with a turkey and all the trimmings. You made that happen! May God bless you for your loving kindness and your generous response!

Be at Peace

Do not look forward in fear to the changes of life; rather, look to them, with full hope that as they arise, God, whose very own you are, will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand it, God will carry you in His arms. Do not fear what may happen tomorrow; the same everlasting Father, who cares for you today, will take care of you then and every day. He will either shield you from suffering, or will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imagination.

St. Francis de Sales

Prayer for our troops -

All-powerful and ever-living God, when Abraham left his native land and departed from his people you kept him safe through all his journeys. Protect these soldiers. Be their constant companion, strength and refuge in every adversity. Guide them, O Lord, that they may return home in safety. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Remembrance of those from our parish who passed away from November 2016 through November 2017.

Remember “Don’t Give Up Chocolate for Lent”?

One of our parishioners is excited about Dynamic Catholic and the books/videos etc. they offer to parishes. She will be sharing the Advent series with the parish and, hopefully we might be able to start a book-club and/ or discussion group for our registered parishioners.

I believe and foster any true educational efforts for Catholics. Life-long learning is the norm. No longer can we rest on the past and the little information we garnered from Religious Education. To be a Christian in the world demands that we know what we believe, live what we believe and act as if we believe. Here is Marie’s message for us:

“Hello, fellow Parishioners: This past Easter you might recall our parish participated sharing the campaign from Dynamic Catholic for the best Lent ever, remember the brown post cards - you didn’t have to give up chocolate? The card invited us to sign up for a daily one minute video. In our world of technology and time management any shortcut on the onset sounded good to me.

Little did I know that this quick scripture, one to two minute video was the compliment to keeping me mindful of what Father Ron shared on Sunday. The two minute reflection invariably was life changing bringing me back home to my faith. I realized I had become a “drive through “ catholic. I am not inferring anyone is like that but if you are like many of us we can easily be oversubscribed and lose sight of what is urgent and what is important. Our commitment to our faith, Prince of Peace, and committing to participating in the life of the parish is important and can be a gift in all our lives. Join me in signing up for the Best Advent Ever at DYNAMICCATHOLIC.COM and then click on Best Advent Ever. Receive the one to two minute message each day and I wish you The Best Advent Ever.

In the future, I’ll be asking you to please reach out to share if this Advent teaching resonates with you. Contact me [email protected] if you have questions. My hope is that as we travel through Advent, we could get together to discuss the message presented through Best Advent Ever. This 4 week journey and a few minutes each day could make your faith deeper and Christmas all the more special.

Thanks for listening to me. Your fellow parishioner, Maria Labie”
