If you prefer to be just another face on a huge

campus, this is not the college for you. Here you

will enjoy small classes, dedicated professors and

exceptional facilities. Students and instructors

get to know each other in a meaningful way and

everyone learns and grows through these special

relationships.

With a total school enrollment of fewer than 200

students, you’ll be in studio classes with 12 to

15 fellow artists. This means you will benefit from

real one-on-one guidance from the faculty.

Fine Arts

Since the Renaissance, the fine arts have been understood as an

intellectual discipline equal to literature. Certainly painting,

sculpture, photography, and printmaking have figured largely in

the formation of contemporary visual imagination. At Pratt, the

relationship between art and design is fluid and symbiotic;

immersion in a milieu rich in both traditions is the best training for

a fine artist. All fine arts students enroll in a common sophomore

year. This enables students to examine each of the different

studio art areas prior to selecting a major in the junior year. The

last two years of study lead to focusing aesthetic directions and

developing those skills required to professionally realize them.

Communications Design

As the world becomes more image conscious and image laden,

the demand for design increases. Hundreds of millions of dollars

worth of graphic design, illustration and advertising are pub-

lished or sold each day. PrattMWP’s Communications Design

program is geared to produce illustrators, advertisers and

graphic designers who will be widely recognized, actively sought

and well paid for their command of these highly coveted skills

and talents. The program leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts

degree in Communications Design encompasses four levels

of training: hands, eyes, mind and social conscience. This

comprehensive approach pays great dividends in the job market,

where Pratt graduates have distinguished themselves by

earning top managerial positions at creative agencies through-

out the world. Many professionals that have honed their talents

at Pratt also credit the program’s strong liberal arts component

as critical to rapid promotions in their careers.

Art and Design Education

Teaching is a creative process. To direct, train and educate artists

requires more than a knowledge of art. An effective teacher

must communicate visual ideas, facilitate creative growth and

engender a desire for learning to prepare artists for professional

challenges. Students at PrattMWP prepare for their Bachelor of

Fine Arts degree with a major in Art and Design Education by

completing the foundation art courses in their freshman year

then developing both their visual art skills and abilities in

communicating those visual ideas to others. Students who major

in Art and Design Education may then go on to earn a New York

State Initial Certification in Teaching Fine Arts in grades Pre-K

through 12.

Photography

Since the invention of photography in 1839 artists have been

using this medium as an aid in the recording of the visible world,

and also as a medium for personal expression. New develop-

ments in the digital realm have further expanded these

possibilities. At PrattMWP, the foundation year concentrates

on the use of traditional two- and three-dimensional media to

develop and expand students’ visual thinking through a

critical practice of methods and processes of creativity.

Photography students are also introduced to the traditional,

or analogue, medium of black and white photography. In the

second year the medium of black and white photography and

its use as a vehicle for artistic expression is further explored, as

well as the mediums of color and digital photography. Film and

Video classes are also included, as well as the study of the History

of Photography. The junior and senior years are spent on Pratt’s

Brooklyn Campus.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is all about numbers. Just take a look at ours:

n PrattMWP’s average annual cost is $12,000 less than other

private art colleges.

n Every year at least 96 percent of our students receive some form

of financial aid.

n Merit awards of up to $12,500 per year.

n The average aid package is approximately $19,800.

n PrattMWP students entering in fall 2010 are eligible for up to

$12,500 in merit scholarships, more than half the tuition costs.

These awards are in addition to need-based aid.

n PrattMWP students receive nearly $2.5 million in aid.

Your financial aid package will reflect both your personal needs

and your academic achievement.

Here, it’s all personal. Because we’re a small college, you and

your family speak directly with our Financial Aid Director, who will

personally explore with you all available funding sources. You will

work one-on-one with an experienced, friendly professional who

knows your needs and wants to help.

54

Page 57: PrattMWP Viewbook

Financial need. Anyone may apply for financial aid. Awards are

based on each family’s ability to pay. Your family contribution is

based on income, assets and benefits. You are also expected to

pursue financial assistance available from governmental and

other sources.

Scholarships. Scholarships are based on merit. After you have

been accepted to PrattMWP, the Scholarship Committee will look at

your portfolio, GPA and SAT (or ACT) scores to determine if you are

eligible for one of our scholarships.

Additional awards. In addition to the merit scholarships, all

students are considered for special awards from our endowment.

Grant amounts range up to $1,500.

Federal College Work Study Program. This is a federally-assisted

plan that offers eligible students a chance to earn money for

educational expenses.

Compare Our Annual Costs With Other Private Art Schools

2010–2011 cost compared with average cost of other

The PortfolioA portfolio review is required for admission. It is important to have

your portfolio reviewed early because we sometimes recommend

that a student submit additional work. We recommend that you

present your portfolio during a personal interview early in the fall

of your senior year.

Portfolio Requirements

Your portfolio should include:

1. 15 to 20 examples of artwork from your junior and senior years.

2. At least eight must be drawings made directly from observation (still-lifes,

figures or landscapes).

3. A self-portrait in any medium, sketchbooks, newsprint pads and

preliminary studies.

You do not need to mount, mat or frame your work. We do not accept artwork

copied from photographs, magazines or other sources.

If you live too far away to visit our campus, you may submit 35mm slides in a

clear plastic slide sheet, or a CD (jpeg or tiff format). Clearly number and label

each slide with your name and social security number. Also, include with

your slides (or CD) a separate sheet indicating the number, title, medium and

dimensions of each piece. To arrange an appointment for an interview and

portfolio review, contact our Admissions Office at:
