FEBRUARY 14, 2016 PSALTER WEEK 1

My Dear Friends, OUR LENTEN SEASON HAS STARTED. Today is the

First Sunday of Lent. Let us make it holy by our sacrifices and prayers so that on Good Friday, when we kneel down to kiss Jesus on the Cross, we will feel that we have fulfilled His command: “If you want to be my disciples, pick up your cross everyday and follow me.” Remember that Masses are at 7:30, 8:30 a.m., noon and 5:30 p.m. each weekday, and the Stations of the Cross are at 9:00 a.m. on Fridays.

THE GOSPEL TODAY IS PRESENTING HOW THE DEVIL TEMPTS THE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS:

1. Through our body’s weaknesses (hunger, alcohol, sex, drugs, power).

2. Through doubts about God’s power. 3. Through an inversion of divinity; asking us to

have material abundance in selling our souls to the devil through satanic or magic cults.

With Jesus it is easy to say NO! Temptations are occasions either of failure, when our relationship to God is cold, or of triumph, if we stick to Jesus! Let us triumph with Jesus over the devil; and if we fail, let us joyfully receive Jesus’ forgiveness in confession. St. Martha Confession schedule is: Sunday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the church, and Saturdays, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., in the reconciliation room in our courtyard.

ALSO, DURING THIS JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY, Pope Francis has asked that all Parishes throughout the world celebrate “24 Hours for the Lord.” As a result, Bishop Dewane has announced: “This special “24 Hours for the Lord” is to be a time for the faithful to experience God’s Mercy in a special way, particularly in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Diocese of Venice will join with the Universal Church in celebrating the “24 Hours for the Lord,” by having confessions on Friday, March 4, from Noon to 11 pm, and Saturday, March 5, from 9 am to Noon. A confession schedule will be posted in the bulletin and on Facebook..

A Lenten sacrifice is to spend less money on ourselves … and give to the Catholic Relief Services through OPERATION RICE BOWL.

TODAY IS CATHOLIC FAITH APPEAL 2016 “COMMITMENT SUNDAY,” and we will have our in-pew collection. Our parish goal this year is $343,000. Last week our Finance Council chairperson, John DeStefano, spoke at all our Masses about the importance of the Catholic Faith Appeal in the Diocese and at St. Martha.

The pledge card gives you four choices: 1. Give a gift. 2. Make a pledge. 3. Indicate that you have already given a gift or 4. Indicate that you cannot give a gift. If you are ready to make your commitment for 2016, complete the pledge card, put it in the envelope and drop it in the collection basket.

As always, your generosity and support in our 2016 Catholic Faith Appeal is very much appreciated. TODAY IS WORLD MARRIAGE DAY! It is an annual event, sponsored by World Marriage Encounter (the largest Catholic pro-marriage and family movement in the world) and the Family Life/Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of

New York. It honors and affirms the vocation of husbands and wives and the positive impact of their dedicated example on our society, families, communities, Church and nation. Marriage is a sacrament — let’s celebrate!! And kiss your Valentine!

ON TUESDAY, MARCH 1, we will celebrate our Annual Feast of Abraham at St. Martha with Rabbi Brenner Glickman, of Temple Emau-El, and Imam Redouan Safdi, of the Sarasota/Bradenton Islamic Society. We will honor Abraham, the first man to whom God revealed His plan of salvation and the forefather of the Jewish people. Please let’s pray together for peace and unity. A communal meal will follow. Tickets are free to all parishioners, and to our Jewish and Muslim sisters and brothers! Donations will be accepted. Please reserve that day!

TODAY, THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT, Bishop Frank J. Dewane will celebrate the Rite of Election/Enrollment at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice at 2:30 p.m. The Election of Candidates for Christian Initiation is the focal point of the Church’s concern for the Catechumens. We send our Catechumens and Candidates from St. Martha’s with our prayers. We pray with our RCIA members and team as they journey to the reception of the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil.

THANKS TO YOU GENEROUS PARISHIONERS we continue to make progress on the new Zazarino Center for Athletics and the Arts at St. Martha School. The Zazarino Center will provide a much needed arts and athletics facility for our

students. The walls are rising, but we still need donations to complete the center. Please contact Laura Osborn at 941-953-4181 to make a donation. Thank you!

Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with

your St. Martha’s priests: Frs. Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry; Deacons Bill, Patrick, &

Kevin; Brs. Bill, Tom, Paul & Lawrence and Srs. Cathy & Marianne

ONLINE BULLETIN AT WWW.STMARTHA.ORG

The symbol of Valentine's Day is a heart, and we recall the pro-life statement, "Abortion stops a beating heart." On this Valentine's Day, let us re-dedicate ourselves to active love and support for the pre-born. Let us also remember the handi-

capped, the elderly and others who may be needing our love.

Year of Mercy: December 8, 2015—November 20, 2016

“What a beautiful thing that the Church begins her daily prayer with the words, 'O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me'. The assistance we ask for is already the first step of God's

mercy toward us. He comes to visit us in our weak-ness. And His help consists in helping us accept His presence and closeness to us. Day after day, touched by his compassion, we also can become passionate towards others." - Pope Francis

THE ARIMATHEANS OF ST. MARTHA The name, Arimatheans, comes from St. Joseph of Arimathea, who tended to our Lord, after his death. Arimatheans are caring parishioners who attend funerals and memo-rial Masses as representatives of the faith community. In order to better attend the var-ied Mass schedules, we are looking to ex-pand our group of parishioners, to perform corporal works of mercy—to “bury the dead.” If an Arimathean minister is available

for a particular Mass, he/she simply will attend the lit-urgy. Please give this prayerful consideration, and if you feel you might be interested in joining this minis-try, please call Cindy at 941-544-8117.

Matthew 25:36 Outreach Opportunity The Diocesan Team Leader at the Sarasota County Jail, Br. Jim Connolly, CFX, is looking for volunteers to visit inmates in the Sarasota County Jail. The opportunity is available every Friday

night and open to both men and women. The visits are not face-to-face—they are through a phone and TV monitor. Please pray about getting involved and meditate on this passage during this Jubilee Year of Mercy: “I was in prison, and you visited me” Matthew 25:36 If you have any questions, you can contact Br. Jim at 617-872-9714 or [email protected]

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
