Remember the days when your hand was never allowed to touch the Holy Communion? As a young seminarian at St. Fidelis High School in 1965, I remember a piece

of the Consecrated Host broke off and landed on my pinky finger. I held it there, covering it with a clean handkerchief so as not to drop the Body of Christ. When Mass was over, I ran to the priest who was de-robing in the Sacristy. I held out my shaking hand to the Priest who was perplexed as to why it was covered with a hanky. I told him what happened. He gently lifted the cloth. The piece of host was still there. The priest picked it up and told me to stick out my tongue. He said “Corpus Christi” and dropped it on my tongue. I felt so relieved, but that soon turned to guilt when I realized I broke another law by receiving Communion twice in one day, which was also forbidden. I was doomed till I went to Confession. As you can tell, I had a lot of hang-ups as a kid.

All this changed in 1973 when the Church allowed Communion to be received in the hand. That was a big deal back then. What before was a mortal sin, was now OK. Ordained a Deacon in 1980, I was allowed to distribute the Holy Communion to the people. I remember feeling offended by this one middle-aged man who took Communion with the dirtiest hands I had ever seen. His fingernails were cracked and filled with black dirt. In fact, both his hands were calloused, cracked and filled with dirt. I told the Pastor about it, wondering if he should be allowed to receive Jesus in hands so filthy.

SERMON FOR TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The pastor told me to sit down on a chair in his office, lined with hundreds of books on darkened wooden shelves. He said, “Michael, let me tell you something about that man. At 60 years old, he could have retired, but he didn’t. Instead, he works harder than ever at two jobs. During the day, he works as a janitor and at night he labors at a cardboard box factory. That’s why his hands look so broken and dirty. He is allergic to the cardboard he touches. And you know why he does this? Because he is putting his son through med school to be a doctor. Don’t let his dirty hands on the outside blind you to his loving heart on the inside. He is one of the holiest persons I have ever known.”

I learned an important lesson that day about judging others based on what appears on the outside. I would rather have you receive Communion with dirty hands doing loving deeds from a clean heart than clean hands doing sinful deeds from a dirty heart. St. James says that pure and undefiled religion is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction. Orphans and widows were the neediest, the weakest and most helpless of all people. Anyone who helped them purified their own hearts and offered to God true worship. So if you come to Mass with some dirt in your heart, come see me in Confession. Confession is God’s washing machine for the soul. God’s soap is the blood of Jesus that washes you clean. All of us could use a good soaking in the washtub of His Mercy. And after you get clean on Sunday, go do some good deeds on Monday.

• A tightwad was looking for a gift to give a friend. Everything was too expensive except for a glass vase that had been broken and he could purchase it for almost nothing. He asked the store to send it hoping his friend would think it had been broken in transit. In due time, he received a note: “Thanks for the vase,” it read. “It was so thoughtful of you to wrap each piece separately.”

• This guy pulls into a crowded parking lot and rolled down the car windows to make sure his dog had fresh air. The dog was stretched out in the back seat, and the guy wanted to impress upon the dog that he must remain there. The guy walked to the curb backward, pointing his finger at the car and saying emphatically, “Now you stay. Do you hear me? Stay!” The driver of a nearby car gave the guy a startled look, “I don’t know about you, man,” he said incredulously, “But I usually just put my car in park.”

• Parents spend the first twelve months of their children’s lives teaching them to walk and talk, and the next twenty-four years telling them to sit down and shut up!

LAUGHTER IS GOOD
