Pay on the day policy – reminder of terms We would like to remind our customers that all store and breeding stock must be paid for on the day. Prime stock purchasers can apply for terms using an account form, which can be posted or emailed on

request and are also available from the market office. For Prime stock purchasers with credit agreements, credit terms will extend to a maximum of two weeks. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to

contact us on 01664 562971.

Farm assurance status

Would all cattle vendors selling cattle as Farm Assured please ensure that their Farm Assurance is up to date, with all linked holdings registered to the primary holding, and ensure that the stickers used in

passports match the details held by the administering Farm Assurance body. We are increasingly having issues with linked holdings not being covered under a primary FABBL account, and severe deductions are

being applied at the time of slaughter. In such instances, the vendor is liable for all deductions made.

Named/Numbered Sires Vendors are advised that named sires must be officially printed on the passport of the animal and not hand written. We will not sell animals as being named or numbered sire if the sire details are not printed onto the passport. Sire details may be checked with the breed societies online to ensure that they are correct. Please

also include sire details on your blue entry forms which accompany cattle to market. Thank you for your cooperation.

Cattle Entry Forms

We would like to remind our customers of the importance of correctly filling

out Cattle Entry Forms. ALL cattle must be accompanied by a fully completed

and signed entry form to include the TB testing interval and date of most

recent test along with Farm assurance details and any reserves. Cattle entry

forms can be collected from the market office or downloaded from our

website. If you have any questions, please ask a member of staff or call us on

01664 562971.

Social Distancing We draw everyone’s attention to the operating arrangements for all livestock

markets at this current time. Customers are reminded that social distancing

should be practiced at all times and facemasks should be worn in areas

whereby social distancing becomes difficult.

REMINDER

Please ensure your vehicles are locked and that you leave no valuables on display, even if you leave them for the shortest time, including unloading.

Thieves are opportunists – don’t give them the opportunity.

Prime Lambs (1679) SQQ 253.46p/kg to 291p/kg & £128

Some super runs of lambs forward today, with numbers tightening nationwide, and trade rising in response. An SQQ of 253.46p/kg looking strong when the difference in the yard of sheep is taken into account. Top of the tree today saw the Friskney wanderer Paul Baker selling 44kg to 291p/kg with 43.5kg from the same home to 287p/kg. MCB Thompson saw quality to 280p/kg for 43kg with the Baker stable hitting 278p/kg for 45kg. T French sold handy 32kg to 277p/kg with Ena Kirkman topping her day at 274p/kg for 37kg. Mr & Mrs Burnett sold 32kg to 272p/kg with 36kg from the same home to 269p/kg. Heavies still equally wanted with Paul Baker selling 46kg to 279p/kg, with others to 275p/kg and 274p/kg. D Cragg sold 54kg to 269p/kg matching Paul Bakers 48kg with JT Voss selling 48.5kg to 265p/kg. TA Smith Farm sold 48kg to 263p/kg, with AG & SC Clarke selling 46.5p/kg to 261p/kg. In the lump, lambs still really totting up in the handy weights with Paul Baker flying here too to see 44kg to £128, with 43.5kg and 45kg to £125 from the same home. MCB Thompson sold 43kg to £120.50 with PR Bakers 45kg to £120. Kingarth Farms saw 45kg to £117.50 with M & H Pick selling 44kg to £117. D & G Rowles saw 44kg to £116.50 twice equal with 45.5kg from PA Wilford. Top of the tree today saw D Cragg selling 54kg to £145.50, with J Selby selling 54kg to £141. Page 6: Tuesday 2nd & Wednesday 3 November 2021

Cull Ewes & Goats (1116) to £200 Average £91.55

Another whopping yarding of ewes with numbers seemingly not drying up, and competition reigning supreme to see an all-in average of £91.55 for everything from best Texel ewes to Hebridean types.

Top of the tree today saw belting rams from D Cragg selling to £200, with PJ Haynes & Son topping his tups at £180. Top ewes today saw £150 for Georgia & Charlotte Davies selling Texel types to £180, with Dave Burns hot on their heels to see £156 for Texels alongside Tups from Ollie Johnson topping at £151. Paul Baker flew high in here too with Suffolk ewes to £150, and David Scarborough topping his run at £145.

Dorsets today to £130 from Henry Tickler, with top mules today on the unstoppable Baker Bus selling massive Welsh mules to £130 on two occasions.

Grazers still sought after and these actively trading between £80 & £90 for those good grazing types, with plainer ewes perhaps looking the dearest sold between £55 and £70.

Store lambs (955) to £109.50 average £82.87

Another good show of sheep and a veritable army of bidders at ringside all keen for sheep. Numbers seemingly no problem and many more could have been sold to vendor advantage. Top of the tree today saw Stevenson & Son selling Texel types to £109.50 with Simon Hubbard selling to £106. Brooksby College sold to £103 with PC Marshall to £100.50. Top Tups today for Beltex from Dave “Dabba” Mitchell selling to £97, with others from the same home to £94. Strength today all between £85 and £100 with the better end of the medium lambs all around the £80 mark. Harder bred mediums actively £72-£76 with the best end of the smalls over £70. Harder bred long-term types between £60 & £65 with very little sold today under £50.

Another big show of pigs forward and trade almost non-existent for anything other than the spec goods. Best pigs a neat trade but anything slightly off centre very difficult, sows again difficult but realising more than in most other marketing options. Prime pigs selling to £105 for Gilts from Knaggs Farrier Service with Lovett & Vickers selling to £102 for hogg pigs. A & P Schofield sold to £98 for smart porker pigs. Top sows to £150 from Alf Oliver, with Steve Branson selling to the same figure. Sows and Litters topping at £120 from H Fitzhugh, for a sow and 9. Weaners very tricky, with even the best of weaners only towards the £20 mark and those harder bred sorts sometimes towards single figures.

October’s ‘Saturday Spectacular’ defiantly didn’t disappoint with not only the usual sale of poultry and all things sheep and cattle, but this one included the ‘Regional In Lamb Sale of Pedigree Charollais Ewes and Ewe Lambs’ with a tremendous entry of both from across the counties, supported well. A tremendous show of stock from start to finish saw not only vendors but buyers travel across the regions to get their hands on some top genetics and quality stock forward on offer.

Pick of the draw came from no other than long standing supporters of the breed team ‘Sulwood’ or better known to many as The ‘A’ Team Trimming Team, of Geoff and Carol Watson; their lot 16, a shearling gimmer, sired by ‘Ffwrd Samson’ and out of the one ewe in the flock that holds a place in both their hearts, ‘Sulwood Lady Bird’, who is still in the flock at the age of 9. This shearling gimmer was scanned carrying twins to ‘Bincome Warrior’, and sold away for 900gns, heading home with R & S Tindall. Another from the same good home out of the same quality sire, this time carrying a single to the same service sire hit a high of 750gns. A trip down from Yorkshire for Charles Marwood saw a top for gimmers at 600gns with more to follow at 540gns, while the central region team, CW & JM Thomas saw a high 500gns. Ewe lambs topped for CW Marwood & Son at 290gns.

Included in the Charollais sale was the dispersal sale on behalf of the ‘Lincs’ Flock for Tina Blythe with some 20+ years of Pedigree breeding going under the hammer, as a restructure in the flock sees the Charollais have to part. A tremendous show of sheep from this good home with flock ewes and ewe lambs on offer. Pick of the day from the dispersal came in the form of a three-shear ewe by ‘Aberkinsey Policeman’, carrying twins to ‘Boyo Vesper Martini’ and hitting a high of 660gns. Following closely behind from the same good pen another three-shear ewe, this time by ‘Edstaston Silver Lining’ which hit a top of 540gns, while the older timer of the flock, nicknamed ‘Granny’, a 2015 born ‘Logie Durno Mcfly’ daughter carrying a single to ‘Vesper Martini’, hit a top of 520gns. The ewe lambs from this super run of sheep saw a high of 420gns for the last Charollais through the ring who was a daughter of the ‘Granny’, the 2015 born ewe and sired by ‘Boyo Vesper Martini’ who is a son of the second highest priced Charollais Ram, ‘Ffwrd Top Notch’. More from the same good home sold away to 300gns.

Another successful sale for the breed with plenty of interest in easy lambing ewes, with the commercial market always at heart.

CALVES

AUCTIONEER – OLIVER CHAPMAN

Tel: 07887 710660

Calves and Reared (193)

Melton market’s calf numbers continue to remain buoyant and plentiful with the 200 barrier very nearly broken this week with 192 on offer. Plenty of rearing calves forward to see a two-tier trade for all goods on offer. With the best ended continental bred calves the easiest to place with the slightly more dairy bred calves proving a little trickier; however, all things considered, a satisfying sale and average for the time of year.

Pick of the bunch this week came in the form of a Simmental sired bull calf from RP & JL Jarvis & Son hitting a high of £408, with blue heifers from the same home to £300. Gaulby Lodge Farm saw a high of £315, while RB Batty hit a top of £300, along with D A Ofield. Pen after pen of continental bred calves through and selling above the £200 mark. Dairy bred bull calves not quite so fierce this week and selling between the £50 to £100 mark.

Weanlings see another strong show forward with something for everyone, with native bred, dairy bred right through to the very best ended continental bred cattle. Topping were a joint share of Oak Farms and TRH Jackson & Partners both seeing a high for 6-month-old weanlings at £725. Chapel Hill Farms with a single Charolais bred bullock reached £620. A super run of Hereford cattle from Stonelodge farms following close behind to £600 with more to follow at £540 and £525. 12-week-old dairy bred weanlings from Chandler and Dickman hit a top of £320.

Weanlings can be sold to vendors advantage weekly; please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss marketing options. Also please remember to help us help you and enter stock to allow us to inform buyers of expected numbers each week.
