ONE LESS OPPONENT FOR NYQUIST By Blood-Horse Staff

With the withdrawal of Dazzling Gem, Nyquist

has at least one less opponent for the May 21

Preakness Stakes (gr. I).

Trainer Brad Cox confirmed May 16 that Dazzling

Gem (Misremembered), third in the TwinSpires.com

Louisiana Derby (gr. II) and fourth in the Arkansas

Derby (gr. I), would instead contest the Latin Ameri-

can Racing Channel Sir Barton Stakes at Pimlico Race

Course on Preakness day.

"That's where we're leaning," Cox said. "Nyquist

isn't in there. That has a lot to do with it."

Cox said Dazzling Gem would probably appreciate

the Sir Barton's 1 1/16 miles, rather than the 1 3/16

miles in the Preakness.

With Dazzling Gem's departure, an estimated 11

or 12 horses remain in contention for the Preakness,

though not all are certainties.

FIRST CLOCKWISE TRIAL HELD ON WOODBINE TURF Seven horses sprinted five furlongs out

of the gate, clockwise, on the E.P. Taylor Turf

Course the morning of May 16 as a trial run for

Woodbine's EuroTurf Series slated to start in

June.

SPENDTHRIFT AUSTRALIA SETS 2016 STUD FEES Spendthrift Australia has set fees for its

current roster of four stallions that will stand

the 2016 breeding season. All payable live foal

fees remain the same as in 2015 and are the

same fees that apply to the farm’s "Breed Secure"

program.

BEN'S CAT SEEKS FIFTH MCKAY TURF SPRINT WIN The Jim Stable's Ben's Cat, a winner in his

10-year-old debut in a May 1 allowance contest

at Laurel Park, will hope to keep the momentum

going in the $100,000 Jim McKay Turf Sprint May

20 at Pimlico Race Course.

SHELBE RUIS WINS FIRST RACE WITH LONGSHOT Longshot Rockport Babe not only

provided an upset at odds of 20-1 in the first

race May 15 at Santa Anita Park, but the 3-year-

old Rockport Harbor filly also gave 25-year-old

Shelbe Ruis with the first win of her training

career.

ed by Yum! Brands (gr. I), worked a half-mile in :51

2/5 at Churchill Downs May 16, the 38th fastest of

42 at the distance on a fast track.

"I thought he worked beautifully, moved well,"

trainer Steve Asmussen said.

No decision was made immediately whether

Gun Runner would contest the Preakness. Asmus-

sen said he'd need to speak to Gun Runner's own-

ers, Three Chimneys Farm and Winchell Thorough-

breds, before that decision was made.

Reddam Racing's Nyquist jogged two miles and

schooled in the paddock and gate as he continued

his preparations for the second leg of the Triple

Crown.

Trainer Doug O'Neill said Nyquist continues to

be a professional and schooled well.

"He's a very special horse. He continues to

show that on a daily basis," O'Neill said. "We've

been blessed with a lot of good horses, but he's by

far the best horse we've ever had.

"He's got a lot of energy, and you see it in the

afternoon when he competes. But he conserves

his energy in the paddock and around the barn

area around here. He sleeps a lot in his stall. He's

got the perfect combination for a top race horse."

Derby runner-up Exaggerator, who arrived at

Pimlico May 15, walked the shedrow at Pimlico

May 16 before being schooled in the indoor pad-

dock.

"We'll probably (paddock school) another

couple of times," assistant trainer Julie Clark said.

"He's a little bit of a handful over and coming

home, so the more we practice the better we all

are."

Exaggerator is expected to gallop Tuesday

morning.

Laoban, who has been in Kentucky since finish-

ing fourth in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) at

Keeneland April 9, is scheduled to fly to Baltimore

the morning of May 17.

Trainer Eric Guillot said it was probably fortu-

nate his colt didn't make the 20-horse Derby field.

"I've got a fresh horse, you know," Guillot said

of Laoban, who runs without blinkers for the first

time in five races. BH

SALES UPDATE

TAPIT PINHOOKS AT FASIG-TIPTON MIDLANTICBy Ron Mitchell

As with any other 2-year-olds in training sale,

top-end pinhooks, especially those sired by

Gainesway stallion Tapit, will be the focus of much

attention during Fasig-Tipton’s Midlantic sale

May 23-24.

Leading the high-dollar group at the Timonium,

Md., auction is Hip 12, a striking gray son of Tapit

out of the winning Giant's Causeway mare Jackpot

Joanie, a half sister to Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner

Summerly and dam of recent Fantasy Stakes (gr.

III) runner-up Taxable and her sister, stakes-placed

Synkros (both by Tapit).

Bred in Kentucky, the colt is one of five hors-

es from Winchell Thoroughbreds being offered

at the Midlantic sale through agent Randy Miles.

Consigned by Gainesway to last year's Keeneland

September yearling sale, he was bought back on a

final bid of $625,000.

"This particular Tapit seems to be a real quality

horse, as the RNA at Keeneland indicates," Miles

said. "The horse has the pedigree with both sire and

(dam), and the physical backs it up. We're expecting

good things from him. He's long-legged, got a great

girth and good shoulder. He's a big, tall horse, built

just like the good Tapits."

Miles said the colt covered the ground well

working at his training center but likely will not be

among the fastest during the May 17-19 under tack

workouts.

"He's not going to be a :10 flat (eighth-mile time)

horse, and we'd be happy if he went in :10 2/5 or 3/5

and galloped out well," the consignor said.

Another Tapit that brought a hefty yearling

price tag is Hip 235, produced from the grade

II-winning Dance Floor millionaire Somethinabout-

laura. Crupi's New Castle Farm purchased the colt

for $400,000 from the Paramount Sales consign-

ment to last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August

yearling sale.

"He's a big, good-looking chestnut colt,"

said James J. Crupi. "Walks right at you and has

everything in the right place—a nice horse. He's a

big, gangly horse who wants to go around two turns.

He's going to work well, but not in :09 4/5 or :10."

Another $400,000 Tapit pinhook is Hip 5, a bay

colt from the stakes-winning Indian Charlie mare

Indian Way, the dam of stakes-placed Indian Brava.

Bred in Kentucky by Mercedes Stables, the colt

was bought by consignors Hartley/de Renzo Thor-

oughbreds from the Burleson Farm consignment to

last year's Keeneland September sale. BH

"She worked this morning in 36 (seconds)

and a couple. She's ready to go," trainer Kiaran

McLaughlin said. "We're going to enter her on

Wednesday and run on Saturday."

With 10 wins in 15 starts, Lady Shipman has

only placed out of the money once, in the Al Quoz

Sprint Sponsored by Meydan Hotels and Hospital-

ity (UAE-I), in which she finished seventh. Her last

race was the May 1 License Fee Stakes at Bel-

mont, where she easily defeated a field of three

others by 2 3/4 lengths.

While the 4-year-old Midshipman filly is not a

graded winner, eight of her wins were in stakes,

and she ran second to Mongolian Saturday in the

TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IT).

Joel Rosario will ride at Pimlico, replacing Irad

Ortiz Jr., who has ridden her in five races, includ-

ing three wins.

"She's doing great. It's a little quick back for

me—three weeks any way you look at it—but

she’s doing very well," McLaughlin said. "It’s a

great spot; she'll be the favorite and we'll go from

there." BH

IMAGES OF THE 1966 PREAKNESSBy Evan Hammonds

Fifty years ago Kauai

King became the first—

and only—Maryland-bred

to win the Kentucky

Derby. Mike Ford's son of

Native Dancer followed

that up with a 1 3/4-length

score in the Preakness

Stakes (gr. I) at Pimlico.

This week Blood-Horse Daily will run a series of

photographer E. Martin

Jesse's images from Preak-

ness week and Preakness

photo archives of Blood-Horse. They portray a Pim-

lico that looks very much

OAKS, DERBY CARDS CLEAN AND SAFEBy Ron Mitchell

All runners in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum!

Brands and Longines Kentucky Oaks (both gr. I) have

tested negative for prohibited substances.

Based on blood and urine samples taken from all

horses participating at Churchill Downs May 6-7, full

instrumental screening for 1,800 substances and their

metabolites resulted in one test—from a non-Derby

horse that raced Derby day—being sent on for confirma-

tory analysis by the testing laboratory.

Following the issuance of a screening report that

identifies one or more samples as suspicious, the lab has

seven business days to complete confirmatory analysis.

“Confirmatory analysis involves performing an une-

quivocal identification of the substance and—in the case

of threshold substances—quantitative analysis that de-

termines if the substance is present in a concentration in

excess of the regulatory threshold plus the laboratory's

uncertainty measurement,” Dr. Mary Scollay, Kentucky

Horse Racing Commission equine medical director, said

in an email.

“Numerous suspicious findings are ultimately report-

ed as passed after the quantitative analysis determines

that while the substance was present, it was present in a

concentration below the regulatory threshold.”

Scollay said the Derby and Oaks programs were

safely run.

“There were no catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries

on either day,” Scollay said. “One horse demonstrated

post-exertional distress walking off the track after being

unsaddled and was treated by KHRC veterinarians.”

Scollay said Shagaf was pulled up in the stretch in

the Derby, with no evidence of lameness. He was subse-

quently diagnosed with chip fractures that will be surgi-

cally removed. BH

THE STRONACH GROUP TO BUY MARYLAND TRACKBy Tom LaMarra

Attempting to solidify Maryland and Mid-Atlantic

racing, The Stronach Group said May 16 it has an

agreement to purchase Rosecroft Raceway, a har-

ness track that serves as a major off-track wagering

outlet for Thoroughbred racing.

Located in Prince George's County, Md., just south

of Washington, D.C., Rosecroft handled about $32

million in 2015—$22 million Thoroughbred racing

and $10 million harness racing.

The track, currently owned by Penn National Gam-

ing Inc., offers more than 50 live racing programs

annually, and the quality of racing has improved

because of purse supplements derived from video

lottery terminal revenue at Maryland casinos.

The primary attraction, however, is the track's

simulcast business and the right to open an off-track

wagering parlor in the under-construction MGM

National Harbor Casino, which will be located just

minutes from Rosecroft.

PNGI purchased the track for $11 million in 2011

at a bankruptcy auction with the intent of bidding for

the casino license; MGM won the license over PNGI.

The Stronach Group, which owns Laurel and

Pimlico in Maryland, said in its "continuing effort to

improve racing in the Mid-Atlantic, the purchase of

Rosecroft is a logical step to strengthen the simul-

casting and racing of both breeds in the state." BH

MEI LING ONE TO CATCH IN ALLAIRE DUPONTBy Lenny Shulman

The speedy Mei Ling looks to have the advan-

tage in the Allaire duPont Distaff (gr. III) May

20 at Pimlico if she can handle the nine furlongs.

Carrumba returned to run a good second in

the Ruffian Stakes (gr. II) May 14, franking Mei

Ling’s second to her in the Top Flight Invitational

(gr. III) April 10. There is very little speed signed

up to go with her early, and she should prove a

tough customer to pass in the stretch.

Ahh Chocolate finished third twice to start off

her season and Savings Account seem the most

likely to upend Mei Ling late. Ahh Chocolate rolled

a pair of thirds to start off her season and has a

grade II victory in the Falls City Handicap from last

November in her back pocket. Savings Account

outran Ahh Chocolate last out in the Esplanade

Stakes and has been grabbing a slice in most of

her recent stakes efforts.

America, a grade III winner looking to regain

form, finished behind Mei Ling in two straight. Su-

STAKES DOUBLE FOR SEA THE STARS PROGENY By Clive Webb-Carter

Galileo, Lope de Vega, and Le Havre have had a

great weekend in Europe, but Sea The Stars con-

tinued his strong run with a stakes double.

The May 15 Deauville classic card saw Al Shaqab

Racing's Mekhtaal put on an impressive performance

to win the Prix Hocquart (Fr-II) by six lengths.

The 3-year-old son of Sea The Stars won his maiden

Mar. 12 and is now three-for-three with one other win

in an allowance April 13. After three months racing,

Mekhtaal is now a leading contender for the Prix du

Jockey-Club (Fr-I).

A half brother to 2008 the Prix Hocquart winner

Democrate, Mekhtaal was a €300,000 ($402,000) buy

at Arqana’s August sale.

Sea The Stars' 5-year-old son Astronereus also

stayed on well to land the Al Rayyan Stakes (Eng-III) by

a length and a quarter during the May 14 Al Shaqab

Lockinge Stakes (Eng-I) card at Newbury.

Coincidentally, Astronereus is a half brother to Prix

du Jockey Club (French Derby, Fr-I) winner Le Havre

(Noverre), sire of Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French

One Thousand Guineas, Fr-I) winner La Cressonniere.

Both are sons of the Surako mare Marie Rheinberg.

Sea The Stars also sired recent Prix Greffulhe (Fr-II)

winner Cloth of Stars, who could be supplemented for

the Investec Epsom Derby (Eng-I). BH

CUNCO AIMED FOR ROYAL ASCOT'S CHESHAMBy Eric Mitchell

Cunco, the first foal, first runner, and first winner

for celebrity freshman sire Frankel, is headed to

Royal Ascot.

The Don Alberto homebred came out of his

six-furlong Newbury debut May 13 in good shape and

will aim for the June 18 Chesham Stakes, according

to Fernando Diaz-Valdes, racing manager and adviser

for Don Alberto.

The Chesham is the only seven-furlong stakes for

2-year-olds at Royal Ascot. Trainer John Gosden told

Racing Post he considered the Chesham "the obvious

race" for Cunco's next start.

The Chesham has been the springboard for sever-

al group winners in recent years.

Multiple group-winning filly Maybe (Galileo) cap-

tured her first stakes in the 2011 Chesham, then won

three consecutive group stakes at 2—the Silver Flash

Stakes (Ire-III) at Leopardstown, and the Keeneland

Debutante Stakes (Ire-II) and Moyglare Stud Stakes

(Ire-I) both at the Curragh.

Berkshire (Mount Nelson) won the Chesham in 2013

and went on to add the Juddmonte Royal Lodge (Eng-II)

that September and the Darley Stakes (Eng-III) at 3. BH

RACING

IF IT'S STILL BROKE, FIX IT

When American Pharoah bedazzled the rac-

ing world last June by running the last six

furlongs of his Belmont Stakes (gr. I) faster than

he ran the first six, he also came close to extin-

guishing the notion that the Triple Crown series

needs fixing.

The first sweep in 37 years all but refuted Steve

Coburn’s assertion, (following California Chrome’s

fourth-place finish in the 2014 Belmont) that the

Triple Crown series was broken and unfair. But

Coburn was half right. The Triple Crown series was

never unfair. It is, however, broken.

Coburn’s beef stemmed from his misguided

notion that horses excluded from the Derby on

points—such as Tonalist—shouldn’t be allowed

to run in the Belmont. Or that horses finishing

up the track in Louisville shouldn’t be allowed to

freshen for the Belmont by skipping the Preak-

ness (gr. I). All that was just sour grapes.

The problem with the Triple Crown isn’t its

“degree of difficulty.” The problem is antiquated

scheduling, which frequently leaves the three-

race series with a gaping hole in the middle.

Today’s Triple Crown season tends to consist of

two corkers bookending a relative yawner.

Of the 19 also-rans in the 142nd Kentucky

Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), only

Exaggerator and Lani (and possibly Gun Runner)

will join Nyquist in the May 21 starting gate.

Now that Nyquist has run a fast speed figure

and—should he handle the two-week turna-

round—seems poised to run another, he is a le-

gitimate heavy favorite. This Preakness may not

be a walkover, but it’s not a great betting race.

This is a problem at least 10 years in the mak-

ing. American Thoroughbred training methods

have evolved in recent years, and the number of

trainers willing to run their good 3-year-olds back

on two-weeks’ rest has dwindled precipitously.

From 1991 to 2005, about 29% of all Derby

losers competed in Baltimore. Over the last 10

years that percentage has dropped to 19%. So

what is the impact on a Derby winner? An easier

Preakness, but a Belmont that is now—more

than ever—"the Test of the Champion."

The rationale for keeping today’s Triple

Crown spacing is “tradition” (which frequently

seems to be the last refuge for a bad idea). Is

there any wonder why, after going through the

grind of the Triple Crown, so many horses have

tough times getting back to the races?

The time for four weeks of spacing is now. It

should help keep the stars of the sophomore

class on the racetrack, provide the Preakness

with a much better field, and keep the Triple

Crown diabolically difficult. If “tradition” has to

take one on the kisser to make this happen,

that’s just added value. BH
